You Can't Scale Alone

from The Success $ Lab · host Dr. Shena Dixon Mason, Esq.

If you are still the top producer, the closer, the trainer, and the service department, you don't have a business — you have a job with unlimited hours. In this episode, Dr. Shena breaks down how small and mid-sized businesses build a real sales function: how to attract people who actually want to produce, how to onboard them so they're selling in days instead of months, and how to train and retain them so your revenue stops depending on your personal energy. You'll learn why great salespeople are drawn to leaders with clear vision and clear standards, and why hiring without a training system is just expensive turnover. This is Grant Cardone's sales team expansion thinking scaled down for owner-operators who are ready to grow. Right now, in a lot of small and mid-sized businesses, the owner is the best salesperson, the trainer, the closer, the fulfillment team, and the customer service line, and that means the company's revenue is capped at exactly one person's available hours and emotional bandwidth — that is not a business, that is a very demanding job you created for yourself. Grant Cardone's point about hiring is that people are looking for successful people to follow; talent is attracted to leaders with vision, standards, and momentum, so if you're struggling to attract good producers, the first place to look is not the job market, it's the clarity of what you're building and how you talk about it. Here's the sequence that works. First, define the role in terms of outcomes and numbers, not vague duties, so both of you know exactly what winning looks like in week one, month one, and quarter one. Second, recruit continuously instead of only when you're desperate, because desperate hiring is how you end up training someone you already know isn't right. Third, build onboarding before the hire, not after — the product knowledge, the scripts, the objection responses, the follow-up cadence, recorded and written down so a new person can be in real conversations within days, not drifting for a quarter while you "get around to training." Fourth, train weekly and forever, because sales skill decays without reps, and the teams that role-play every week outperform the teams that only talk about numbers. Fifth, retain with growth, recognition, and real earning upside, since top producers don't leave for small money, they leave for leadership that has no plan for them. And understand the reason this matters beyond convenience: a documented, trainable sales process is the only way your revenue becomes repeatable rather than heroic. Your money work this week is to record or write one piece of your sales process — your discovery call, your offer presentation, or your follow-up cadence — in enough detail that someone who is not you could run it, then identify the single role you will add in the next ninety days and write the outcomes that role owns. Nothing in your life is random—it's a result of what you did or didn't do. Take massive action and 10X the outcome.
