because you mentioned it and we weren't going to talk about it but I think we should frame the podcast with it just a little Just like structurally that there's a rocket that's going to launch in the window of our recording Yeah, it's exciting and like I just started recording. I didn't mention any of the vaccine stuff But none of that's in there, but I did just start recording and So yeah, there's a rocket and I will say yeah If in case my wife says hey the rocket launched come to the balcony and look I'm gonna go and I'm gonna go see what's up because They said there's a there's a chance. It's a guarantee There's a chance that the sky will change color for about a minute Yeah, you can't miss it. No, that's awesome That doesn't happen very often right it doesn't happen very often that like the UFO people get to like actually see something I I'm so impressed and I'm so excited for you because like I can imagine the time Well, maybe not for you But I can imagine a time when recording a podcast would be more exciting than a rocket launching for some people, you know So I like the in the theme of our show like we were setting up priorities like before we even get into it We're setting up priorities of if the sky turns purple.

I'm teaching the show which yes Yes, the right thing to do and I want to be clear It has way less to do with the rocket that has to do with the sky turning purple I could care less about the rocket. I you know, I think I am one of those people that I'm just like I Guess NASA's doing stuff Let me know how it works out I'm not gonna watch a live stream because most of the time when you watch a live stream a pocket Nothing happens because it will be canceled because of some tiny detail, right? And so I you know I know better than to expect anything out of these things Do you have the live stream on now while recording? No, I do not But my wife does in the other room.

I think she's a little bit more into I think she's a little bit more into rocket launches than that I am right. That's that's normal. Are you into are you into rocket launches? Well, no, but I mean if there was one here in the Philippines and if the rocket launching might turn to sky purple I probably would be I probably cancel the recording into watch it Not exactly we don't exactly have NASA, you know, so it was supposed to go off It was supposed to go off yesterday and then we watched it for like 15 minutes and then they canceled it so like So by the end of the show folks you're gonna know we'll find out Yeah, I'll find out I don't so like do you want to just do like a little bit of follow up from like things we talked about before and then maybe we can Yes, maybe we can start a topic and probably not finish it Yes, you know cuz the sky might turn purple totally go to the left.

It sounds like the best way to go about the day show exactly What's been I Yeah, I'd love to start the one thing a really terrible thing happened to me the other day like I didn't even imagine what happened. It's yeah I Was working I was just working all week There's lots of papers to mark and I decided to work in bed because the heat has been unbearable and the air conditioning in the bed Is more energy efficient than the air conditioning outside? I mean anyway, I just just work in bed all day. Sorry before you I hate to interrupt the air conditioning in the bed What explain that to me?

Sorry, they're conditioning in the bedroom. Oh, okay. It's not you don't have a bed with air conditioning No, but that would be amazing When we for honeymoon in Boston in Washington, New York We rented the car and the cars you can rent like the entry-level cars you could rent had a climate control in the seats And that was mind-blowing for us, you know, because yeah cars here are very conditioning But the seats over there in the West like how you can warm them you can cool them. It's blew my mind So yeah, it's always like a measure of like first worldiness like not the corruption or the transparency It's whether the seats have like climate control or not.

So we still don't have it over here in Asia I think it's only the highest end cars that have them, you know And what anyone that not everyone even even knows about them like people don't know that cars can do that Over there like the entry-level like the Volkswagen golf or something that we rented like had air conditioned seats That was or cooling cooling seats. That was amazing to us They're so happy to drive just because the seats were cool even the lead the lead warming up or body If you if you were like amazing Yeah, if you had told me that like no, you bought this bed because it had like built-in temperature controls We would have had to completely change subjects today to only talk about that What are you doing with the bed without air conditioning? Sorry? Okay, so you're in bed.

Hello. Yeah, all right. So yeah, so I was in the bedroom And I was working and I just spent the whole day working and it went on until the early evening and And then I saw I looked at my watch rings my apple watch rings and Apple watch rings look kind of normal The pace they would be it would I would be in by about 7 p.m I it looked like I'd be able to finish by the end of the day like after working like with other cooking and cleaning and whatever and By 11 p.m. I noticed that I had two hours to stand hours left to go I was done with my exercising done in my activity doing but my stand rings was at 10 out of 12 and it was 11 p.m So I thought oh, this is this is fine.

I can just do another workout that requires standing or I can just go to the bathroom I wasn't worried about it by 11 55 I was at 11 out of 12 and I couldn't figure out why so I panicked and did another workout for the last five minutes of the day And I got an extra what hundred calories an extra like five minutes of exercise, but no stand hours And I ended the day soya for the first time in maybe a year not completing my stand ring and and I am affected by it like until now like it upsets me just a little bit just a little bit not not enough to you like give up or Or you know lose it But just like I'm upset so here because I stood up more than 12 times at each time more than a minute each Even if I was working in bed. Yeah, I'm upset like it's it's so yeah, cuz you know in the last hour I was standing up the whole time no time practically all done and now Forever the record is gonna show like my moves my move my moves creaks there my activity my exercise streak still there But like me has my challenge for me is to complete all three rings the whole month I'm not gonna get me that's fine. I wasn't really paying attention to the monthly awards the monthly award was something else I didn't get make it that's fine, but I know that I stood up for more than more than 12 times that day and more than a minute each so I'm learning soya that it doesn't mean that you're supposed to be standing up for at least 12 minutes a day or power many times a day It's just that you need to stand up for a minute every every hour for at least 12 hours And that's dumb and I hate it and I'm upset so okay, I would have break that down a little bit because it's that's a great story and Your annoyance is valid Because so there's a couple things you could have done and there's a couple things that Apple could have done and there's just a Miscommunication between you and Apple, which is you know an important relationship in your life, right? And you know this is just couples miscommunicates sometimes and that's what happened here Okay, you know you thought the stand ring was for one thing an apple thought it was for a different thing, right?

And I'm here to tell you that you're allowed to cheat You're allowed to cheat on your partner, which is Apple So should I buy a Fitbit? Is that what you mean? No, that's not what I mean What I mean is you are allowed to take that 12 standing hour thing and you can just like take it down a little bit And it's fine The stand ring is the least important of the two of the three rings Right it is right it is The stand ring is not for people who are working from home and who have children and are getting up and moving around The stand ring is for people who are in offices in meetings all day long or on their computer all day long and they're not moving at all That's what it's for Right, I see your Instagram stories around all the time. You're fine You know I appreciate you saw your but and I respect your opinion but unfortunately the watch doesn't agree No, the watch doesn't agree because the thing is like the thing is like the watch is whatever you want it to be It's in your control, right?

You dictate like the watch doesn't dictate rules to you you dictate rules with the watch Yeah, that's what my wife was saying she went when I told her at midnight that I didn't make it she said oh good You're free I'm not I'm not I'm not free, but then it went into this whole thing about who's the master and was this late Which is what you're talking about right now I wonder if like now I guess it's not so much that that like I hate the watcher I'm set at the watch but it's it's more of the what it's driving me to think about and what I'm what I'm being driven to think about is like I know that It's a matter of me like I'm moving forward. I now know right I now understand what apple expects of me Um and I then have to manage my resentment of apple and all those things but moving forward I'm not upset. I'm not worried, but I'm it's just that I think I'm extra frustrated about that last hour Like the last hour like if I just knew at 11 that oh there's no way I'm gonna make it Yeah, and then I'd be done right, you know, I'd be done I'd have no regrets because I needed to do what I needed to do that day like I wouldn't be like oh well Okay, nothing I can do but instead because this is like therapy since it is it is a relationship we're talking about Yeah, because I didn't know I did invest a lot into that last hour like that was an important hour that didn't Have to be important, you know, I could just give it up. This is why I'm saying though that like you're Like you listening to the watch because the watch isn't listening to you right like The watch is not respecting you in a situation.

You're saying you did the work Yeah, right Right. Yeah, so I you know, I think what you I think what you should do and I'm guessing other people in your life Will agree to this is that you should go into the little activity ring thing and say I don't need to stand 12 times a day for you I could bring it take it down to 10 or 8 and then it'll probably just happen on its own and you'll be fine Because what seems to matter to you is the completion not necessarily the raw data Yes, absolutely. Absolutely. I don't care about the data Right.

And so if if if the if the apple watch is just going to ignore some of your hard-earned data Uh, then then it can't be trusted, you know And you should care more about the other people in your life that aren't the apple corporation or yourself, you know This is good. This is good. Yeah. I mean, I've seen the odd I will do that I have seen the odd mind and body workout from you since I told you about the trick Yes, yes, which I'm glad you're using it.

It was very helpful. Yeah I don't think our this when we talked about this was like off the record So we should tell people so the mind and body workout that's all you're talking about is I'm lamenting about the Same thing about being bound by bound by the need to complete the rings and so you're going to be this article We're gonna put the show notes about how you can have a cheap day and the cheap day is built into the apple watch It's called the mind and body workout where it basically counts activity minutes workout minutes and calories for you to do whatever you want Whatever you want so you can you know, it's I think it's a it's a funny way to interpret it but um, Sean Blanc, the author of the article says that it's he uses it for when he just wants to be deliberate with his time but he needs to take a break from working out and um So it sounds like it's a lot for people like me who just need to complete the rings but can't afford to work out in within the 24 hours of a day Like because there's also cases where like, you know, it's 11 40 and I need to finish a thing and I won't be done until 12 But I won't sleep yet But the apple watch doesn't care when it hits 12 it restarts the rings so the mind and body workout is a great way to do that It's a great way to have a cheap day So yes, I have been doing that and it's been very helpful and I did it the other night Like I had the minute left in my activity ring and my workout ring and I but I knew that I like I already burnt the calories I needed to burn that day So I just popped in a mind and body workout for a minute Which is really just me sitting and watching Netflix with my kid So that's that's it's been very helpful and I appreciate it It's it's just that the the standard is the one I like you said It's the least important one because I just take for granted how I completed every day I never care about it But I didn't realize that it was possible to not complete it, you know I didn't think that the kind of days I have but I didn't think it was possible that it wouldn't complete it So I spent that last hour being like an idiot and you know out of defiance and out of just you know being a good patient of The therapy session, I'm gonna change the goal right now to eight hours Just not even because I know this is what I need just because I'm mad at it. Like I'm right I'm proud of you. Thank you.

Thanks. I also um, I so I would hate for anybody to know this because this might help you cheat further um in a sort of retroactive way In a sort of like hey, you missed yesterday, but it really matters to you that the whole month is complete and that you had it So it would be really really terrible for you Mikey for instance if you were to open up the health app and Go to browse and then go to activity and then go to workouts and then add data and then add say a one-minute workout uh during that day where you missed your stand ring and And it would be really terrible to do that because it would then close that ring Uh, and then you wouldn't lose your streak All right, it would be terrible. It would be really bad. Thank you.

Yeah, no one should do that because I would be dishonest And uh, it wouldn't help you in the ways that the apple corporation is trying to help you, you know, yeah, no, that's that's not good That's not okay. We're gonna take a two-minute break I'm seriously doing it right now. I know you I'm so upset. I'm so upset that I'm gonna do it.

I don't care I mean, I look if I can't help people Uh, you know cheat on apple then what go to my as a as a tech podcaster Right, right Right. Absolutely. Yeah, I know I know How do I sorry add data? Where are you right now?

I'm in health. Is it in health or an activity activity activity and then workouts or fitness fitness? Oh workouts. Yeah, but under workouts Well summary Sorry, sorry, everyone This is important.

You know It's all workouts and all showing you all the workouts around figure out how to add data Yeah, so if you if you just so your activity right scroll down to the where it says workouts tap on that And then it should show you day week month here of your workouts. Are you saying that? Oh, no, I'm not I think I'm in fitness. Let me check it out here.

Yeah, you're in the wrong place Yeah, okay. So now I'm in health Workout there you are work outs add data. I'm gonna do this when when do they not make the ring? This is I'm so excited right now.

So you have no idea. Okay. Um, where when did I not do it? What is the date?

Ah, I can't wait. I can't wait. I can't believe it. It's gonna happen This is Thursday me 13th.

Okay, let's do it. Let's do it. I'm so happy. I can't believe this is happening Workouts add data may 13th.

Oh, is it gonna happen? Is it gonna happen? Oh, no 830. Did I run?

No, I let's say I did mind and bodies So we're honest Yeah, look calories This is gonna give me a stand ring is mine and body gonna give me a stand ring. Let's say 45 Starts at 835 ends at 845. Obviously, I'll dirty, but I don't care add You can enter up to four days at a time. Oh, me 17.

Sorry me 13. Okay. Okay. I added a workout What does this mean?

What does this mean? Oh, I'm really excited to watch this This is fun for me. This is fun for me. I literally know what it feels like to be like the devil on a shoulder right now Right Let's see.

I'm gonna let's see this added one hour where I didn't stand so four idle hours Oh, that might be the that might be the thing It might not count another stand hour if you logged it in during the time that you had the sanding, you know What's what's a workout that obviously needs that obviously includes standing like running like I'm gonna sure I can Yeah, yeah, I'll do this. That's okay. That's fine So I'm just gonna let people know just in case you're tuning in just now. Uh, Mikey is Mikey is forging important health data On his phone because it's more important for him to make the rings go spinny That's actually challenged himself and growl using this That's right absolutely yes, you know, it's Kill it.

How many kill a cow use what you burn from five minutes of running for pen means of running? Dude, just put in 10,000 Doesn't matter Well, what's your tip? You want like 800 calories for the day or 900 calories for the day? What's your what's your goal?

I will Was it 800 and then the lockdown restarted in February I put it back down to six now that's 60 So I say I added 100 kilocattories. There's no 100 10 minute workout. Yeah, let's see. This is running so running means Like I stood up Right like I was standing you can't run and not be standing and I don't have the wheelchair setting So, okay, let's do it add 12 noon.

I ran even if I was in bed. I ran Average 12 minutes or thought 12 minutes. Yeah, let's see. Oh, I'm so excited.

I'm so excited. I'm going close the app fitness 50 No, I didn't wear it. Oh, no No Oh good on apple when I'm being good at like detecting fraud when they want to detect it Now I want to I want to be clear. I did this and it works just fine.

So it just keep at it. Just keep cheating and eventually it'll work And I'll do is after this. I don't want it to be an hour full of you know, the rocket might launch into my death They go but I was actually just told that the rocket's gonna watch in about five minutes So I think we might only go on. Oh my god.

This one might be a little mini episode where the entire focus is You tried to cheat on your apple watch Okay, this might be my favorite episode yet. I think yeah, this is really good This is great. That's great. If anybody has any advice for us Isn't hateful or insulting, you know, we accept that I have an unhealthy relationship with apple And this is not me lionizing them.

They are evil There are many things about them that are evil. It's just that this is how it is. You have to judge me So yeah, if anybody has any advice, this would be great. Please send it our way.

Yeah, I'll look into this and I think like yeah It worked out for me. So I don't know why it's not working for you, but it does this cheat totally works So it's going to be happy. Yeah, my own side I just want people to be happy. Thank you.

That's what we do. That's that's why we have the show So it works for me. I like that we do this for each other. It's very important Well, good to see you good to hear from you and uh, we'll do another one of these now Uh, hey, this is ksore paul co-host of the show just saying we took a bit of a break between part one and part two Uh part two's coming up here in a second go get a beverage.

It's a good one Oh, and also these guys did not turn purple. I uh, I'm sorry about that. I know that's anti-climatic Anyways But all right now we're recording Yay, now this will go out to the millions We're a very popular show, you know, sorry very popular show, you know We are yeah, we are. Um, I think it's the this car city of episodes.

Yeah. Yeah, well and then there are no other podcasts in between ours We're the only one left. Nope. That's right.

Last podcast remaining. That's it. That's it. We're the last one I mean could you be improved with their other podcast?

I don't think so No, not at all. You can't know no way to do that. No way to do that and um, whatever's left, uh, have to be paid for Apparently that's what subscribing to podcasts means now. So yeah, at least we're the last free one That's true.

That's true. We are free Uh unless you want to start charging we could do that No, fine. What about what about our mom's name? Hear me out here.

What if we say? If you want to listen to the show and this is per episode if you want to listen to an episode All you have to do is give us five thousand dollars Or a macro each, but that's like ten thousand dollars. I don't want a macro. I do want five thousand dollars Ah, I see.

Okay, you know what? I don't I don't want one either Five thousand dollars you'll take Yeah, sure. Yeah, see for I love it But maybe not like forever for all about guests. I mean, so maybe an annual subscription of five thousand dollars No for episode.

It's the only way I'll agree. Oh per episode. Wow. Yeah, that's um, very We don't do all that many episodes.

Maybe it'll just be five thousand dollars for the year But if we do a second episode, that's ten That's right. That's right. That's right. I don't know if it's just one episode for the rest of the year that would be an annual subscription So that's a great savings to the customer shortly Yeah, the fact I think we're worth it Um, and I think we'll and I think we get that we would get the paying subscribers that we deserve I agree You know and I would I would uh, I would think five thousand Us would be worth it just for the like how to cheat on the apple watch advice that you gave me and you are just one half of us So exactly I think I bring five thousand dollars to the table just myself with my with my advice on cheating Right.

Can we talk about cheating tonight? We can there's there's stuff to talk about we're cheating I don't even know do you want to air the previous thing that we did we didn't really finish it We can finish it right now. I can tell you what happened. Okay, great And then this can be this can just be part two of that episode Uh, it'll all together Yeah, see we're talking about this and people we don't even know that this is already two podcasts.

So oh my god Um, so here's what happened here's what happened. It didn't work It didn't work like adding a stand hours to uh, do uh, an activity ring to or adding a workout through uh A day to a ring two weeks before Doesn't add to the ring Like it doesn't add to the the standard or the workout ring or anything But it saves in the health app as a workout So like like the deepest version of data collection about your health knows that you did it But the shallow end of uh the front facing reward dispensing Area of the of the apple ecosystem Uh, probably knows that I was trying to cheat So it's like for your health we're gonna record that workout But like for the reward system in your brain you don't deserve it Because you weren't wearing the watch when you stood or you didn't stand whatever for whatever reason so So that is uh, it's brilliant on their end. I hate it Like I can't be mad at them for that I am mad at them that they didn't consider over 12 hours that are not spread out over 12 hours of standing As 12 stand hours like that's ridiculous to me But that since that's what that's the issue we discussed last time Uh, the issue of them not rewarding me for retroactively adding to the ring Seems fair. It seems like, you know, I think I have to say that that was cheating a bit You know, since we are talking about cheating that was a bit of a cheat and uh, they didn't let it slide I say they like they're watching what I do, right?

And it's not some device thing, but yeah, um, no, no, no, it did not end it's June already So I didn't get my may award for competing all three rings all month because of that last stand hour that they wouldn't count No matter how long I stood Well, I think that's horseshit Yeah, well, you know it is I think that's a miscarriage of justice and uh, I agree and I think the fact is There's okay, if you in paying attention like the news and stuff There's like this big trial with apple and epic and there's a whole lot of stuff that came out of that trial about how apple Really thinks about the iphone as their device Even after you buy it, even after you take it home, even after you cover it with your greasy disgusting fingers And do whatever you want to the phone. It's still their phone. That's how they think of it, right? It's not yours and that's the part that I think is horseshit I think it's your phone And I think that if you want to jimmy the numbers on your health app with your health, that's your right I think if you want to cheat, you're allowed to Um, you know, it doesn't make you a better or worse person It just it should just be something that's allowed if you care about watching the things go spinny You should get to make those things go spinny.

However, you feel like it Yeah, I think that's the that's the line that they're they're walking So they're like, yes, we can we don't have to doubt you that you walked through weeks ago and that your watch didn't see it Or that you exercised before you wore the watch Mm-hmm like I think I think they're saying yes, you did we accepted it's in the record But like the thing that makes you feel good is our rings and that's still up to us is what they're saying So it's a part But it's also on me see like it's it's the it's the it's the part of me that still gets its kicks from the rings Like that's I feel like I you know, no one else has any it has this kind of well That's not true But like the majority of the world won't have this kind of relationships Or this kind of relationship with devices like they're dependent on a dopamine hit from seeing a graphic appear Like that's you know, and so then make the graphic like I can learn photoshop or learn some video anything and make the thing and see it every day That I can do that and I think Like the watch, you know for all of its flaws and all of the all of its injustices Uh knows that it'll be rendered I mean think about this So you don't don't you think this will make the dopamine hit meaningless or it'll make a dopamine much less for everybody else in the world If everybody knew that they don't have to do whatever it's asking you to do to get that little graphic You know the answer to that is maybe but as a you know, I'd like to I'd like to respond to the accusation as both a technology person a graphic designer who makes the photoshop things and And as someone who regularly cheats at video games and thinks it's like this better for it Okay, please do please respond First of all, you said that you shouldn't care about like the rings going spinning But of course you should the thing is designed to make you care about the rings going spinning The actual data is like buried several floors beneath the rings Right Like the whole game of this is to make the rings go spinning close your rings That's what the ladies and the gentlemen and the they say at the end of all of the workouts close your rings I have a sticker pack from a Toronto Bujo sticker designer. I have a sticker pack from this lady about the rings She makes these adorable little stickers about the rings that I put them in my bullet journal and it makes me feel good So the stickers are just like of the rings being completed like real life versions of what you see on the watch I have one set of these stickers where the rings are not filled in and I have one set of these stickers where the rings are filled in And some days I will put the not filled in sticker into my bullet journal and some days I'll put the filled in sticker in the bullet journal and sometimes that aligns with the truth and sometimes it doesn't but the point is it's about self-care Right, right, right Right, you're convincing me here. So that's point the first the graphic design point That's the whole game man. The whole game is you want to see like the fireworks at the end of the level, right?

Give me my seat the cutscene is the rings closing and I'll tell you something when you When you make the rings spin at a crazy degree and like you close the app and you open the app again and it does that all animation of them spinning You do feel extremely accomplished even if all you did was going to add data and say I did a 10,000 calorie workout today Well, I'll tell you oh wait. Sorry. Tell me your second point before I say something about this The second point is the watch isn't perfect and your complaint was legitimate I think in the court of public opinion here You did a day you did a complete day and the watch didn't Respect that and you have every right to correct the data because it's your phone Right, right? First of all, you're totally allowed to do that because you're a human being and we should get rest days and I do think it's bullshit that the app Watch doesn't give you a rest day Secondly, you're allowed to Jimmy the numbers on the day as much as you want if I go in to my Health app right now and say I did a 10,000 calorie mountain climb today when all I did was sit on my computer and play computer games It will count it and the rings will go spinning It just won't go spinning on a previous day Yeah, you're right right.

You're right. It could be 12 it could be 1201 and it could be count the yeah What a punitive tiny decision Yep, yep All the health app is all the health app is is a nice little spreadsheet where you can put your health data and little metrics And these little radios that are in your watch and are in your phone Update that data, but in the in the case of those little radios not doing their job It allows you to input your own data and it should care out is all I'm saying Yeah, I'm especially sad because the May award was achievable It was three rings every day for the month which I'd been doing for over half a year now Except for that day and so I accept that I'm not gonna get that award sure no problem And then the June award thing comes up and it says that I'm supposed to do Just more minutes of exercise every day for the for the month and I know I'm not gonna do that Like I you know my hopes were not up for this one I just there's some some goals I want to make some goals that I don't and for June I just saw I was like yeah, I'm not gonna do that and it makes me sad because May Was a very easily attainable award for me. I didn't get it because you know what you're right I I acknowledge that you were right. I was wrong and that was horseshit and it still is because it does comp You know what the data does show the data shows that I did it I mean sure I added it but you're right.

That's not what I wanted. I don't I told you this at the beginning of the first episode I don't really care about the data anyway. It's not the data I care about You want the things that are many? Yeah, I it's uh very dependent on you know how as an adult you try to detach emotions from daily decisions so that you can function as a human being Yeah, my feelings are still very much attached to my watch and uh the other day Like I tried to do the cheat thing the mind and body workout once a week Like I give myself a rest day once a week and I feel like anything more than that feels a little like cheaty Except the other day I needed to do it I just wanted to tell the story and we can move on I felt like I knew you were gonna see that I did do mind and body workouts this week Which you know, I did not judge you you're very you're very accepting and you do this whole view I anytime someone turns on the mind and body thing to me that says taking a self-care day Right and I want to explain I want to tell a story as to why I needed one in the middle of the week Um, and it's because two days before that I thought my son to swim Um, well, I swim I mean to swim for a few seconds underwater like hold his breath underwater and do a few kicks for a few meters It was wonderful to start it.

Um, and then the other day that was a few days before So the other day we were poolside he wasn't supposed to swim Uh because his friends were swimming and you can't swim Wearing a mask. So I said, okay your friends can swim you can hang out with him by pool side But you have to wear a mask Um, and he fell into the pool soyer he fell into the deep end of the pool So I panicked and I ran and I saw that he could kick and he took care of himself and I pulled him back in and I was freaked out It was the moment the failure as a parent But uh also a sign of success that he was able to take care of himself in the deep end of the pool Which a week before he would not have been able to do it was amazing It was a traumatic and thrilling at the same time. Um, and when I got back up we got back home Um, my rings showed me that I had three exercise minutes Which I thought was bullshit like absolute like the stress I experienced that day was tantamount to what an hour two hours three hours of exercise I think anytime any time a parent has a moment where their child might be in danger I think that you're I think that's your workout for the day. You know anytime that happens Yep, it felt like my my feeling like like just my resentment Like don't you fucking tell me to work out for 17 more minutes at 7 p.m Fuck you like I was so angry.

Oh my god I watched so you know just after everything you're gonna tell me to work out screw you So I turned on mind and body and then as soon as I was done with it I took my watch off and it was like 8 p.m I think my watch off before bed, but this was very early in the evening and just out of anger I just like no you're charging early tonight asshole. You you said you watched a bed without dinner No, no dinner. It's good dinner. Yeah So yeah, it's a much more emotional connection you have to this diggus Yeah, it's weird that I have an emotional connection to technology We should make a podcast.

We should make a podcast about how that's complicated So yeah, thus endeth the story of the Apple Watch. This is the official end of the previous episode Then we can move on to this one, but yeah, that's what happened. It is bullshit You are right. I think about everything I said in the first four minutes And uh, yes, I will cheat from now on I think there's a part of you that goes I entered into a contract with this watch this watch will Tell me if I'm doing a good job with my health and To a certain extent I agree with that.

I'm wearing one myself that I bought with money with the hopes that it would do that for me And for the most part it does I think for the most part it's a good product It's not perfect product sometimes it screws up and sometimes it makes mistakes and it doesn't know your body and your mind At least not yet. Maybe version eight it will just implant in your brain I don't know but like until then until then it needs to give you the benefit of the down That's my honest opinion about all these things Yes, you are 100 right like there's nothing about anything you said anymore that I I doubt or disagree with now Here's my vantage point. Is it shear? Okay sometimes cheating is just the right thing to do Hmm interesting.

So can I you know sometimes this is about the Apple watch and sometimes this is about video games from 1989 And if I may if I may segue slightly into video games from 1989 um, I So I did my very first twitch stream of any length. I've played around on twitch I've been on there for you know five ten minutes at a time before this but a couple weeks ago I did my very first twitch stream that went for two hours Wow, I know what you're gonna say two hours is nothing at twitch time No, but I know you I know it two hours is a lot Yeah two hours a lot and it was not interrupted two hours I went to the bathroom which I know again in twitch world is against the law I have no idea how people do it on twitch like It's insane. Anyways I did a two hour stream and I played a A turbo graphics 16 game. We talked about the turbo graphics 16 in season one of the show back in 2016 The turbo graphics 16 was my very first video game console and there were some games on that system that I think have aged extremely well Um, and this I think this is true of all video game systems There's always a handful of games where you're like well that was really transcendent and it will stay good forever regardless of technological progress And I think there were a couple games that were really really good and so I did a I did a full twitch stream of box adventure, which was the sort of the franchise mascot of the turbo graphics Do you recall these games at all?

Nope, not at all. Sorry. That's okay. So, uh, but you know, it's a kid's game kind of kind of it was a little dark But kind of it was a kid's game.

Um, but it's hard because 100% of turbo graphics 16 games are extremely hard And I remember beating it as a kid and I kind of haven't played it since and so I I booted up the ROM and played Full playthrough of turbo graphics 16 and it's on the youtube open to the show notes here And I don't think I made for twitch personally I think uh, I think if I want to become a twitch person if that's something I feel like is in my future I might invest in some vtuber nonsense or to make myself slightly more palatable to the audience I think I've got I think I've got a face and voice for podcast I disagree, but okay. Oh, but thank you Um, yeah, but I don't know that I have the charisma to to be by myself on camera for hours, you know Like this is a conversation we can banter back and forth and I can stay lively But like if you just in a room by yourself for hours while you start reaching Well, I see on instagram live like I see you when you're like on I see one end of the podcast and it's mostly you and I think you can handle it You know, I'm not being not just being nice here. I do think it's a thing like I think it's a you can totally do it Totally do twitch. That's you can handle being on your own, especially if you're playing a game I think that's what makes twitch work.

Uh, the stimulus response is the game It's not just some you're not just a vlogger for talking for eight hours by yourself Like that's true. Um, that's true. So Especially especially games from the topographic 16, which I I'm not sure is very common on there's so hard Oh, and no one's playing them. I have the market to myself on twitch So yeah, so I played this game and you know what I wasn't able to get through it I was not able to beat the game without cheating So, so did you cheat?

I did of course Because I wanted to watch the game and I wanted to have a video where I began the game and I ended the game in one video That was important to me how I got there was not all that important to me Right, right. All right. So I cheated so and I used a cheat That I love my favorite my favorite modern video game cheat is called rewind And I'm sure you've seen this in some games. Um, do you have a Nintendo switch?

No, I don't still don't so in the on the switch they have if you subscribe to the online thing you get um Nintendo games and super Nintendo games you get like a bundle of those and In there they've added some functionality And one of those is save states where you can save the game at any point and load the game from any point and some people would consider that cheating And they've also added a rewind functionality where if you mess up you can just hold the two shoulder buttons and click back a few And it'll just go back frame by frame Because it's just kind of recording what you're doing and it's keeping a note of where you are and you can just rewind as far back as I think a couple of minutes you can remind a couple of minutes. Oh, that's great. That's a great feature It's so good because it makes games that were designed in the 80s and largely designed for the arcades Where you the whole design philosophy was that you were gonna die immediately Right, right, right. We're trying to kill you so that you could pump more quarters into this machine Yeah, right it makes those games playable, right?

It's it's it's it's it's an accessibility feature in a way because it makes games that you would otherwise never get to the end to You can finish them right Um because it's not quite as punishing to have to start over from the beginning of the game or start over at the beginning of a level You know, you can just go back three seconds and you can correct your mistake Right. It's not jumping you to the end of the level. It's not giving you unlimited lives or unlimited powers You still kind of have to be the game and if if people watch my youtube video of bonk's adventure Basically I get up to the final boss with almost no problems and then the final boss fucks me up Um so so the cheat you applied is the rewind is rewind so in retro arch which is this Retro games emulator bundle thingy for the pc and for everything you can install it. It's retro arch is the new doom You can install it on anything Um, they have a rewind feature They also have a fast forward feature which I think would be useful in games that are taking their sweet time to get to the point Um, I don't know if you've ever played any rpgs with a text box is it just slow?

Uh, the metal gear solid is that way? Oh my god. Yeah, I'm thinking about doing a play through a metal gear solid in retro arch Using that feature Code-conversations exactly Um, so I was it so basically I used the rewind feature until I was able to correct my mistakes and beat this boss And it felt really good. It did not feel like I was cheating And it didn't feel like I was cheating because if I hadn't cheated I would have never done it No amount of practice.

No amount of time spent. No amount of like athletic growth would have gotten me there I would have just given up. I do not have the grit to spend hours and hours and hours of my life on a video game from 1989 Even if you get my love from 1989, I just don't have time Right and it's so you know, that's uh, it didn't even occur to me that a lot that games from like before the memory card Were designed for you to To die as much as possible and overcome like the whole the whole uh The whole value that's being like increased here is perseverance like not joy Not not enjoyment not satisfaction with the game But at the end of the game experience all you can say that you did is that you persevered because of how often you died I'm thinking of sonic the hedgehog which I yeah, which I played as a five-year-old that I never finished And uh, then I downloaded it on the ipad a few years ago and I realized that I got like I was I progressed way more than I ever did And I realized it's because you can save every level and you couldn't do that in 1992 You could not and so yeah, sonic the original song to hedgehog Uh, I don't think it had any safe states at all like at all if you turn that game back at the beginning Yeah, and you'd you'd get an extra life like sometimes and that would be the biggest deal and I remember thinking like I just kept getting lives And lives and some point I had like five one-ups By what hour one of the game and I realized that the thrill of getting an extra life in 92 is so different than now Like now I don't even care like, you know, because I saved every level I can just start wherever I want But back then, you know, a life meant you get to play another hour, you know, because and you better hope you have enough lives by the Time you get to the boss because you're gonna die bunch and you might not even beat it And it did not occur to me that that's a fundamental way that games have changed in our lifetime So this is so interesting that like, you know, this discussion means like I completely agree now that cheating isn't cheating It's almost it's almost correcting the design flaws of the game from the 80s That made no consideration for anything else but being paid for in the arcade box Yeah, and like, you know, there are tough games these days There's the you know, the dark souls and there's like that There's hard games these days, but I would argue that the really really hard games of today are nothing like the hard games from the 80s And not like we had it harder, but exactly that the design thinking behind the game is completely different The people who are designing dark souls, they want you to have a challenge But they also want you to overcome that challenge the people who designed radius or art type they just wanted to murder you Oh god art type So here's where I was getting at I beat art type last week Wow And I totally cheated like I used the rewind feature like crazy. It's up on my youtube.

I recorded it I didn't put it on twitch, but I recorded a whole play through art type And it took me two hours And it was incredible art type is so good, but it's impenetrable without cheats So it sounds like you're satisfied you're satisfied with having completed it even if you cheated Oh my god, am I ever I had such a good time. It was such a good game. You know what I recommend in 2021 art type so good But you need to play it like like it's braid, you know, do you remember braid from 2008? No, no, it was this like indie game that came out on the xbox 360 And it was I think the first of its kind that it was a platforming game where when you died You hit a rewind button the rewind button was baked into the game It was part of the design and the whole game played with the rewind button So in some levels only some things would rewind and right so it was it was a really good platformer um And it made really good use of this rewind feature because you were trying to turn back time and um, fix mistakes you made and uh, also maybe stop a bomb from going off it's it's a big complicated convoluted mess, but it was really really cool and I remember it was one of those few moments in gaming where you go This changes how I feel about games retroactively I don't want to play a game like this now without a feature like this This is how I need games to be from that one because this is more interesting And if you play art type like braid with a rewind button, it's a completely different game.

It becomes this strategic chess match. It's incredible Hmm See that's something because art type is legendary for Not making people feel that way Yes, exactly art type just wants you to fucking die And not come back it has it does not want you to keep playing There is no incentive to keep trying in that game Yeah, because you know you bought the game it doesn't need you to do anything else But it was you know, he was an arcade shooter in the same way you pumped a quarter into it and then you die five seconds later Right, right, right. That's it They have your money Got it. Um, yeah God Okay, this is uh, this is uh Revealing and this is very exciting for me because like that's not a thing that I considered I forgot about the insight after sonic It's just like five years ago now.

So this is a thing. I'll totally revisit especially art type The rewind button sounds like uh, it's literally a game changer in experience and in the game itself literally a game changer totally great Um, and yeah, like so if that's interesting that like sega would go in and make saves In between levels for you like that's its own way up like that used to be considered cheat to do that I'm a second justice, right? You have to get a game gene to do crap like that Mm-hmm, right? Yep.

Yep. It is interesting to me like What what used to be considered a cheat is now just a gameplay feature. Um, right like did you uh, did you ever play celeste? No, I never did it's on the pc and it's I think it's on a couple consoles now I played it on the switch and I played it on the switch before I got the pro controller I only had the little joint cons and those are not meant for platforming.

Let me tell you um Celeste is an extremely difficult platforming game But it has some built-in features that used to be considered cheats you can just go into the settings and you can make Um, your double jump into a triple jump, you know, uh, you can like there's a bunch of stuff like that That just makes the game slightly easier slightly more forgiving, you know, but yeah You used to have to buy a game gene or use have to buy an issue of uh, Nintendo power and get a cheat code from the back of it Do you think you would have been More like do you so do you think therefore that the the thing that the cheat like fixes offers no value to you whatsoever? No, that's not true. Um because I think my level of gameplay abilities pretty high I think I'm a pretty good video game player. I've been doing it my whole life and you know, I'm not a pro at any level But I I've been games that are considered pretty tough.

I've mastered things that are pretty tough and I do I do feel the benefit of trying and succeeding But what I don't really see the benefit of is trying and failing and failing and failing and getting frustrated and hating the art form and more Specifically going well. I guess video games just aren't for me. All right, right, right because that does happen Oh my god. Does it happen?

It happens so much I I don't mean to like dive into it But I just want to comment comment on it that um and not to go too deep into nerdery But this is very uh very roll and barth death of the author of you Oh, is that you know Because because we're you're basically saying that the the author's intention or the developer's intention for the game is not what matters most In fact, sometimes it's dead wrong You know, it's like that is not the experience or the meaning of the game experience for you So breaking it in a way that the author absolutely did not intend Um fixes it like you know or or or makes it meaningful there that makes it meaningful because otherwise it would be meaningless I mean sure well, not necessarily meaningless, but the meaning would be oppressive and depressing and you know anxiety ridden But removing the doing what it takes to resolve the mental health implications of the author's intent makes it meaningful to you So, yes, absolutely. You've got you've completely nailed it Yeah, it's it's wonderful and it's it's wonderful to see uh, yeah, I'm sorry. I'm about to say this But it's a wonderful to see literary theory applied in something like this Comes back to what I was saying before is is the phone in the watch? Does it belong to you or does it belong to Apple?

Right, right. Right. It does our type belong to the people who made our type or does this copy of our type belong to me Right and and and lawyers and licensees and trademark people they're almost always on the side of nothing belongs to the customer Right, right. Nothing belongs to you.

All you did was put a quarter in a machine. You don't get any rights from that Yeah, but I would argue that in this life, which is short and hard sometimes you can get pleasure from Configuring a bluetooth controller to have a hot key that when you hold down the select an L button It goes back 20 frames in our type and you can beat the game 25 years after you first tried it and it murdered you I think there's some pleasure in that You know the more I think about I think it's also possible that like because like developers are aware that They're aware that they're dead basically that they're aware that the meaning to the gamer is not Their intent is not what's usually what usually takes place Also common I think that they do they build into the game things that like punish you for doing it There is a I'm thinking of the time I played red dead redemption the first one on the 360 And we had been playing like my nephew and I had been playing for what hours and hours by then we were exhausted And I don't remember if ought to save was as reliable as it is now back then But I just remember having a safe habit and I think in red dead you had to go somewhere to save like go home or something Like deliberately manually save It was your command S of the video game world where you just right even though you don't have to hit it anymore Yeah, yeah, and I we just we just kept doing it Anyway, because we were we had invested hours and we freaked out and there was one scene where You finish the the part of the game in one section of the map And then you have to take your horse all the way to the other section of the map and the entire horse ride a song plays And it's supposed to be this meaningful powerful dramatic moment of solitude and whatever and it was beautiful And like 10 seconds into the song I was like, oh man, this is awesome Okay, we got to save so that we don't have to worry about it And we pause the game in the middle of the song and we save the game and when we went back to the game The song didn't play so it was three minutes of horseback riding with no music and it was the most Frust like it angered me so much because the song felt like a nice reward after hours of play before you embark on the the rest of the journey And because I wanted to save and make sure that I didn't lose my progress the game punished me for it for not just simply experiencing it Like it's it's it's ridiculous Like I was so angry that I killed the game and then went on youtube to watch someone else do that thing So I can listen to the song It's just a stupid song It's just one of those cinematic moments that you know that rockstar does used to do better than everyone else back then Um, but man I felt like they punished me for trying to save a game and the reason I save games is because games never let you save for so many years Right, so yeah, I'm I'm glad to know that people the people who made art type Didn't think of the what would happen 20 years into the future or 40 years into the future when they made it But the thing is they get to grow and change too and like more modern versions of our type like art type final too is an incredible shooter And it's far more forgiving and fun than the original art type, right? Even those creators are like we just can't hit these buttons this fast anymore Yeah, because they're older You know in in in some ways playing a video game as an athletic endeavor You need to be able to you have a coordination that needs to be at a certain level And you know what I just can't hit the buttons like I used to Yeah, no, I agree. I agree But you know, there's also sometimes like your your body just molds itself to a specific game that newer games are harder to get into It's true.

I find that with platformers where I always want them to be mario I always want the character to float like mario But they don't like most way more platformers are like mega man than it's like mario But I always think that those ones are wrong Yeah, no, it's not it's it's wrong like I I played uncharted because it was free last year So I just got downloaded the whole thing and played one through four in the the the spin-off one with a with cloey Um, so five uncharted games and you know, I was really enjoying it and I decided to go go back to tomb raider and tomb raider felt wrong It was just like this is not how this is not how you jump and reach for a cliff That's that's not how you do it and I couldn't get into it. I just couldn't get into it. So yeah, no, the rules of games I think I think what this means is Cheating Is good As with all things it comes down. What are you trying to do?

Do are you trying to are you trying to win money? Are you trying to screw someone over? Maybe not You know are you trying to you know like do a crime? Maybe not.

Although like like I said, I'm I'm playing these games on retro work These are wrongs. I'm in a legal gray area. Even though I own these games. I just want to say Right.

I've purchased our type many times Would you the is there still part of you that wants to complete it without cheating? No, because I know I can't I know it's I know it's completely outside of my abilities So do you have to reach that point before you try it before you try cheating from now on like is that? Is that like the line for you like you have to wait till you accept that you can't do it without hating it? I don't know.

I beat Celeste and Celeste is hard and I didn't cheat in Celeste, but you can't cheat in Celeste because The settings that make the game easier to win are baked into the game. They're not hidden behind a cheat code They're not you know, it's cheating in video games is complicated It's like cheating in multiplayer games is maybe less complicated if you put in a cheat code and in something I don't even know if there are cheat codes anymore Mikey. I don't are there still chief books I don't know but other games are for usb Kids are cheating in fortnight and they're beating other kids in fortnight And the kids who are losing are sad because they lost not because they didn't play well But because the other people cheated to me that's different I'm playing a single player game And I'm trying to get through it and I'm trying to have my own experience with it Um, and some cheats are baked in like with Celeste or with Hades Hades has this Amazing feature where every time you die you just get 2% more powerful Right, so right so I gotta play you still gotta win but every time you die you get a little stronger So every playthrough is 2% easier Have you played journey? No, I haven't it's on the list.

It's in the queue. Yeah, okay So I was gonna say some of you might spoiler a few things for you, but they they do a very interesting thing where In the end of the game you your your deaths become meaningful They're not just they're not just ways that you have to restart the game or restart the section They're they show you all your deaths that have meaning so go go play journey. It's fun It's very rewarding, but they they're this is this is baked into the design that you know It plays with a trope of dying in a video game Uh, but it only shows it you in the end that's a little bit of a spoiler I'm sorry, but the exact the terms of it are very uh Satisfying so yeah, you're gonna enjoy it when you play it I do want to say sometimes I do really enjoy a difficult game every now and then I I re-install getting over it on the pz And I just I just it's just self-harm Occasionally to play that game But it's just like a song thing to get a little bit of progress in there, you know, right right? It's a sauna you know sauna is the sauna natural thing for you and me, but you just want to get in there sometimes I get it video games are so silly because it's like oh I want to cheat in this game where I'm I'm in a spaceship shooting aliens like yeah, I want every advantage I have what I can get Yeah, that's how I I am playing a VPW so it's a virtual pro wrestling to this is the the AC games.

This is like no mercy WF no mercy on the n64. Yeah, so this is the the Japanese version That's the frame edition so someone edited their arm to include like wcw wrestlers and the modern wwe wrestlers and it's fun But after you know after playing three year campaigns or four year campaigns like you Like it just gets into your brain where you can you can beat the AI basically you mentally you've defeated the AI already because you already know The AI is going to do so like um So I find that the way to keep playing the game without it getting stale is to just play Let you just create wrestlers who are not good You just you just play the worst characters and it's like I'm aware that fighting game pros do this like or they're all pros want to excel Like a specific player like street fighter pros or like experts at a specific player and they play in tournaments with them But you know, I was never into that kind of that that degree of gaming What you're doing is playing is Dan and Street Fighter Exactly playing as Dan. That's what I was getting at so this is you know, that's the The best you can do like let me play Austin and I can beat like anyone, you know, I mean, I'm not a good gamer So you're not saying this as a flex. I'm just saying for this one specific game You know, I can match up with the top 10 of the world.

I think like but you know, I'm not a gamer I'm really not um, but it's just because I've devoted hours into this thing and it's not it's not something I'm flexing or saying It doesn't make me a better person. It's just the thing I happen to do Uh, so then you know you play or you make a Steve Blackmon or something Just just just because you know that when it's time for the hot tag the AI is going to be like an ultimate reverser So you know it you're prepared for this and you know things like that You just know what the game is going to do So it's it's a lot like asana like you know, no one wants to be in that level of heat in real life But when asana is there you kind of want to get in it for a few minutes just because it's there Yeah, I'm thinking about doing like a youtube essay or something on on game sheets because I think it's I think it's super fascinating I find it just like just like going back in time and cheating and art like oh, it just just for fun I opened up the Nintendo collection on my switch and I turned on Gradius, which is an old Konami shooter Which they have in this collection. It's um, and it's one of the first kind of pretty good sides rolling art-style shooters Um, and I turned it on and I hit pause and I entered the Konami code and it worked That's awesome. So I never heard this And I looked at and I even noticed the time it was the first game that used the Konami code And the whole reason behind the Konami code is that the creator of the game Wanted to like get farther in it and testing it was too hard for the creator So he had to cheat and the code was just left in the game and it's still there.

That's amazing So much So yeah, I think it's I think sheets in games is a is a really fascinating thing that like It's been there ever since the beginning almost and it's still there in certain ways I don't I don't think there's cheat codes as much these days But like there's cheat settings and and sometimes the developers just kind of want you to do it because the developer wants you to beat the game Sometimes like can you imagine if the movie industry worked like this? Yeah, every 10 minutes of the film it stopped and gave you a quiz Well, there's some some Netflix shows that do this like there's a Minecraft thing where you choose your own adventure kind of thing Which uh doesn't really appeal to me. So I can't imagine a movie industry doing it and it would not be that great, but maybe for games Maybe for games it works like it's occurring to me now as you say this that maybe the mind and body is the Konami code of the Apple watch The mind and body F is the Konami code of the Apple watch sure, so you know, I mean it doesn't burn calories the meditate I mean not not the same as brisk walking and that's what it says it does It says it's gonna give me the same amount, but like scientifically is that true? I mean neither of us are like, you know the kind of people who would be experts at the calorie You might want to ask a Buddhist this yeah, we would buy it but would a Buddhist care about calorie counts, you know, so you know, so I do believe the Buddhist would be like, I think you're missing the point of editing Exactly, so you know what I'm starting to accept especially if it's built in to the watch that this is a like this is like the Konami code You know, so and this is why I felt more comfortable with Konami code over the with the mind and body then with retroactively adding a workout That being said I now don't feel bad about that and that they didn't let me get the award anyway after doing that is bullshit You're right Apparently I think it used to work.

I looked it up. It used to work and I guess it doesn't work anymore Which means that someone at Apple like changed it to make it worse Yeah, you're right or it could be that it's a like a like a statute of limitations thing Like maybe I could add to one yesterday, but not two weeks ago, baby Maybe but you know either way is crap you're just crap with spinnerings I flip back and forth about this almost every day until I talk to you So I think this time is gonna stick.
