You Don't Control the Results with Hollywood Filmmaker Alejandro Monteverde

from No Surrender

We spend so much of our lives trying to control what happens next. Alejandro Monteverde believes that control is an illusion. The filmmaker behind Sound of Freedom, the upcoming Zero A.D., and various other films says one of the greatest lessons he has learned is how to live in a state of Surrender - not by sitting back and doing nothing, but by working as hard as he can while accepting that the outcome is not his to control. For Alejandro, Surrender and No Surrender are not opposites. You show up. You do the work. You keep moving. Then you let go of the result. As Alejandro puts it, "You cannot steer a car that is parked." But his understanding of Surrender became much deeper after an unimaginable family tragedy in 2015 left him carrying a level of pain he didn't believe he was strong enough to handle. Alejandro compares that suffering to suddenly having a 200-pound sack of potatoes placed on your back. At first, the weight crushes you. Eventually, he realized he had two choices: let the weight destroy him or build the strength to carry it. That search for inner strength led Alejandro to meditation, prayer, gratitude, and a daily practice of separating the voice of his ego from what he describes as the voice of his soul. In this No Surrender Quick Lesson, Justin Cole and Alejandro explore what it really means to Surrender without giving up. Justin and Alejandro cover: Why Alejandro believes our desire for control creates chaos Why Surrender doesn't mean sitting back and doing nothing The importance of working hard without attaching yourself to the outcome Why "you cannot steer a car that is parked" Alejandro's belief that there will always be another mountain to climb Why being present may be one of life's hardest mountains How meditation helps Alejandro recognize when his ego is taking over The difference between the voice of the ego and the voice of the soul What gratitude can teach us about judging other people How an unimaginable family tragedy changed Alejandro's understanding of strength The 200-pound weight analogy that reshaped the way he viewed suffering Why meditation and prayer became daily practices in his life Whether you're building a business, facing uncertainty, carrying grief, pursuing a goal, or struggling with something outside of your control, Alejandro offers a different way to think about strength. Work as hard as you can. Keep moving. Surrender the outcome. This is just one lesson from our full conversation with Alejandro Monteverde.
