You Don’t Have to Look Like the Leader Who Came Before You
from Your Next Clear Move · host Debbie Peterson of Getting to Clarity
You can talk yourself out of a bigger role in minutes by doing one thing: comparing yourself to the person already doing the job. We dig into why that reflex is so common for high-performing leaders and why it creates a false definition of “leadership readiness” that has more to do with style and confidence signals than real capability. I share a story from a leadership readiness program about a woman being groomed to become president of her organization. Everyone around her can see her potential, but she cannot stop measuring herself against the current president and concluding she does not belong. That moment opens up the question I come back to again and again with leaders: How do you know you are not ready? There is a crucial difference between truly not being ready and deciding you are not ready before you even understand what the role requires. From there, we get practical. We talk about replacing assumptions with factual information by researching the role, talking to people who have done it, asking what surprised them, and mapping the skills and experiences that matter most. We also look inward, because leadership development is not just training and competence. Your values, doubts, energy, priorities, and beliefs about what a leader is “supposed” to look like all show up when responsibility increases. The goal is not to become the leader who came before you. It is to build a clear roadmap and give yourself permission to lead as yourself. If this resonates, subscribe, share the episode with a leader who is second-guessing themselves, and leave a review so more people can find the show.
