Young Parliamentarians in the South African National Assembly

from African Dialogue · host Channel Africa

Last month Cyril Ramaphosa was appointed president of South Africa by members of parliament who were also sworn on the same day. Although there were many changes to consider in parliament on the day such as new political parties featuring in the national assembly for the first and those parties which had fewer seats this year around one major fact stood out. This was the number of young people who were being sworn in to be part of the 400 members to be part of parliament’s National Assembly. What was noteworthy was the point that a majority of these youths were aged in their early to late twenties. Today we speak to some of these members of parliament and have a conversation on the importance of youth participation in governing structures. On the line we are joined by: • Peter Keetse EFF, Member of Parliament • Sibongiseni Ngcobo, DA member of Parliament
