Your Hotflashes Started During Childhood
from Living Midlife In Color Hosted by Shar'da Brooks, FNP-C
🔥 WHAT IF YOUR HOT FLASHES STARTED DECADES AGO? What if I told you that your hot flashes might be connected to more than just changing estrogen levels? What if the stress you've carried, the environment you grew up in, or even experiences from your childhood could play a role in how you experience menopause today? Now, before you think I've gone down another rabbit hole, hear me out! 👀 Research from the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN) has revealed something fascinating: Black women, on average, experience hot flashes for longer and report more bothersome symptoms than White women. But why? In this episode of Living Midlife in Color, I'm taking you beyond the typical conversations about hormones and exploring research that connects menopause symptoms with the experiences women carry throughout their lives. We're getting into: 🔥 Why Black women report a greater burden of hot flashes and night sweats. 🧠 The surprising relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and menopausal symptoms. 💗 How chronic stress, discrimination, and socioeconomic circumstances may influence women's health. 🔬 The concept of weathering and what cumulative life stress can mean for our bodies. 💊 Why treating menopause should involve more than simply discussing estrogen. And I'll share a personal memory of watching my mother experience an intense hot flash when I was younger, long before I understood what was happening to her body. Here's what I want every woman to understand: Your ovaries didn't turn 45 in isolation. Your entire body did. And that body carries a lifetime of experiences. These studies identify associations, not proof that childhood trauma or discrimination directly causes hot flashes. But they raise important questions about why women experience menopause differently. 🎙️ WATCH OR LISTEN TO THE FULL EPISODE New episodes of Living Midlife in Color every Thursday! 💬 LET'S TALK!
