Your Kingdom Come — The Prayer of Hannah

Before Hannah's song in 1 Samuel 2 comes her pain. Childless in a culture where children meant identity, security, and survival, sharing her husband with a rival who provoked her year after year, Hannah's soul, the text says, did not merely feel irritation but roared in anguish. A pivotal phrase, "Hannah stood up," is a Hebrew idiom for taking decisive action. She refuses to answer her tormentors and instead runs to God, praying so intensely that the priest mistakes her for drunk, a raw prayer of desperation and surrender rather than rehearsed words. The order matters: prayer, then peace, then later the answer. Hannah found peace long before Samuel was born, modeling a relationship with God strong enough to rest in His sovereignty even before, and even apart from, the answer we hope for.
