Youtiao Shop Closes, Indonesian Coral Reefs, Claw Machine Boy

from News Bites · host ICRT

Hello, it's time for a new episode of News Bites… I'm Paz Bueno… And I'm Trevor Tortomasi. Today's stories… A shop in Tainan closes after more than 100 years, people in Indonesia work to save coral reefs, and an American boy climbs into a claw machine. Uh oh… Let's get into it! ________________________________ 經營122年的台南油條店停業 Tainan Youtiao Shop Closes After 122 Years Are you willing to do the same job as your parents? Some family businesses (家族企業) go on for many generations. That's what happened with one shop in Tainan. Bainian Youtiao has been going for three generations But now, the shop will close down. Bainian Youtiao opened in Tainan in 1901. The small family-owned shop only made one thing: youtiao. They are a popular breakfast food, and people love to eat them with rice porridge (稀飯) or tea. The shop made these youtiao fresh (新鮮), every day for 122 years. However, they have recently announced (宣布) they are closing down. The owner, Mr. Chang, cannot continue to run the shop, due to his health. Mr. Chang's son cannot take over the business, because he is in college. So, this is the end of Bainian Youtiao. Some people say it's a bad thing, because the old shop was keeping an important tradition alive. Small shops like this are important for preserving Tainan's food culture But other people say it's a good thing. In their view, it shows there are more opportunities (機會) nowadays. When people have more choices, they don't have to join the same business as their parents. Either way, people in Tainan will miss the flavor (味道) of this old shop. ________________________________ 印尼社區 致力於拯救珊瑚礁 Communities in Indonesia Aim to Save Coral Reefs Coral reefs (珊瑚礁) are an important part of our oceans. But many coral reefs are in trouble. They are being harmed by human activities. Pollution and fishing have damaged (破壞) coral reefs around the world. Now, some people are trying to repair the damage. Communities in Indonesia (印尼) are working on many such projects. One is happening on Tidung Island, near Indonesia's biggest city, Jakarta (雅加達). Tidung Island has lots of reefs. But, pollution from Jakarta has damaged much of the coral. So communities on Tidung Island are working with Jakarta's universities on a new project. The universities are teaching the people how to grow coral. The people grow it in a safe place, and then transplant it to the shallow reef around the island. They hope to expand the coral reef, and promote sustainable tourism In another part of Indonesia, people are going even further to save corals. On the island of Bali (峇里), fishing has destroyed large parts of the coral reefs. So, a local diving club (潛水社團) is building more reefs under the water. The divers make structures from concrete and metal, and then carefully place them on the ocean floor. Then, the divers transplant (移植) corals onto these structures. These structures give corals a place to grow, and they give fish a place to hide. These are just two of the conservation projects happening now in Indonesia. But they provide a good example (好例子) that the rest of the world can follow. ________________________________ 美國男孩 卡在夾娃娃機裡面 North Carolina Boy Gets Stuck In Claw Machine Do you like to play claw machines If you are good at using the machine, and if you're lucky, you can win a prize. But it's not easy. Losing at the claw machine again and again can drive people mad. That's what happened in the US, where a thirteen-year-old boy climbed into a claw machine and got stuck (卡住了). The machine had plush toys (絨毛玩具) inside, and the boy had crawled in trying to get one. The park staff had to call a medical team (醫療隊) to come save the boy. The team unlocked (解鎖了) the machine and let the boy out. He was not hurt, and the park staff returned him to his family. The amusement park also banned (禁止) the boy for one year. So whatever you do… don't try to climb into a claw machine. You might not be able to get out. ________________________________ So, in today's newsbites… A youtiao shop in Tainan is closing after 122 years.
