月经不调在中医妇科中常称为冲任失调。冲任二脉属奇经八脉，统帅阴血，与月经有着密切的关系，尤其是冲脉与肾经较为密切。从经络循行上来看，冲任二脉在胸腹部合并，肾经与肝相连，贯穿于肝，肝主藏血，冲任失调会影响肝的藏血功能，肝气横逆时亦会影响冲脉统帅阴血的功能。
