There were four groups among the Jewish people, most of whom did not advocate for jumping into the sea. Moreover, even based on Torah law, there was room to debate whether Nachshon, as a Ben Noach, was obligated to risk his life (and consequently whether he was allowed to risk his life) in this fashion. Nevertheless, Nachshon jumped into the sea, because he knew that Hashem had commanded, “When you take this people out of Egypt, you shall serve G-d upon this mountain,” and that accordingly, they had to continue advance to receiving the Torah at Mount Sinai, even if there was a sea in the middle of the way! This is a lesson for all generations, and for the work of the baal haheilula, who personally conducted himself with mesiras nefesh, and who from the very beginning of his leadership demanded the same from others – even though we find no law in the Shulchan Aruch that one must demand this sort of mesiras nefesh from others. It can be likened the fact that it’s a mitzvah to listen to a provisional ruling of a prophet to transgress a mitzvah in the Torah.
