Seemingly, the theme of Tzom Gedaliah is the very opposite of Rosh Hashanah, which is a time of joy, as the verse states regarding Rosh Hashanah, “…eat fat foods and drink sweet drinks, and send portions to those who have nothing prepared...for the joy of Hashem is your strength,” not to mention the spiritual dimension of this celebration, particularly on a day when Hashem fully accepts the Jewish people’s coronation of Him as their King. But since there is a lesson for Divine service to be learned from everything, there must be a connection between these two themes – in fact, since we are commanded to “ascend in holiness,” it follows that Tzom Gedaliah must represent an ascent beyond the month of Elul, the days of Selichos, Erev Rosh Hashanah, and even Rosh Hashanah itself. The explanation is as follows: On Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish people willingly accepted upon themselves Hashem’s sovereignty.
