התוכן הטעם שציור הגביעים בציור המנורה [שהציווי על עשייתו הוא בשלישי דפ' תרומה] שבכתי"ק הרמב"ם הוא באופן שהם רחב מלמטה וצר (השוליים) למעלה, היפך הרגיל, (דאף שבודאי הי' להרמב"ם מקור לזה בדרז"ל אבל בכל זאת צ"ל טעם הדבר), הוא, ע"ד שמצינו שהחלונות בבית המקדש היו "שקופים אטומים", "רחבים מבחוץ ופיהם אטום וקצר מבפנים . . כדי שתהא אורה יוצאה מההיכל שתאיר לעולם..." (Although the Rambam certainly had a source for this from a Midrash etc.,) we must understand why. It can be likened to the windows of the Beis Hamikdash, which were “narrow and broad” — “wide on the outside, and their mouths closed and narrow on the inside... so that its light would go out from the Heichal to illuminate the world” (Rashi). Similarly, the goblets of the Menorah – the vessel through which the light extended from the Beis Hamikdash to the entire world – were narrow at the top and wide at the bottom, indicating that the primary purpose is to reveal and draw down the light of the Beis Hamikdash into the world below.
