from The Daily Sicha - השיחה היומית

משיחת כ' מנחם- אב ה'תשי"ט ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=12-09-2024 Synopsis In the laws of gittin (based on Chamishi of Parashas Ki Seitzei) we find two opposite extremes: (1) According to Beis Shammai (and some say the halacha here follows Beis Shammai), it is forbidden for a man to divorce his wife unless he “found unseemly conduct in her); even according to Beis Hillel who holds that one may divorce his wife even if “she burned his dish,” still, “he should not rush to divorce her” (effort should be made to keep the marriage intact so that the blessing made at their wedding (“an everlasting edifice”) won’t be in vain etc.). (2) If he did divorce her, “what he did is done,” and he has no mitzvah to remarry her. The lesson is: (1) When by Hashgacha Pratis someone has begun a certain shlichus in spreading Yiddishkeit, and he finds it difficult – “she did not find favor in his eyes”; “she burnt his dish,” i.e. he hasn’t found success – still “it is forbidden to divorce her” – he may not abandon the shlichus. At the very least, “he should not rush to divorce her” because it is within his ability, if he truly tries, to overcome the difficulties, and then he will find that they were only a test without any substance. (2) If it happened that he did “divorce” it, then “what he did is done,” and now, since “It is not good for man to be alone,” he is obligated to find a new shlichus and utilize all his potential – and in this way he will also atone for betraying his first shlichus.Excerpt from sichah of 20 Menachem-Av 5719 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=12-09-2024
