It only appears this way so that a Jew, with his free choice, can recognize and reveal that Hashem is the Master of Universe and “there is none besides Him.” A Jew nullifies this mistaken appearance of the world not so much by studying Torah and performing mitzvos, but by recognizing, even when “working in the field” etc., that his livelihood comes only from Hashem. Therefore the Sages said, “One who fulfills the mitzvah of Challah is considered as though he nullified avodah zarah” (which implies that before he performed the mitzvah, there was avodah zarah): the world has its nature that appears “foreign” to G-dliness, and the Jew nullifies that “foreignness” by giving the “first portion of your dough” – which seems to come via natural means – to Hashem, thereby proclaiming and revealing that in really, the entire world, including the goyishkeit within it, all comes from Hashem. (Conversely, one who neglects the mitzvah of Challah chas v’shalom upholds this appearance of “foreignness”).
