Why then does it begin with Bereishis? Because ‘He has declared the power of His deeds to His people, to give them the heritage of the nations’ – for if the nations of the world were to say to the Jewish people, ‘You are robbers because you conquered the lands of the seven nations,’ they would answer them, ‘The entire world belongs to the Holy One, blessed be He; He created it and gave it to whom He saw fit.
