When they arrived, his father opened the aron kodesh and read the first half of the Iggeres HaKodesh beginning, “She girds her loins with might.” Afterwards, the Rebbe (Rashab) Nishmaso Eden told my father-in-law that in the presence of his holy forebears, he was entering into a covenant with him and entrusting him with the leadership of communal matters both physical and spiritual; he explained that was hereby bringing him to an “Akeidah,” and that in an Akeidah, there must be both one who binds and one who is bound, in order for the sacrifice to be as it should be. The work must begin with the “loins” (kabbolas ol), which must be “girded” with “might” (mesiras-nefesh). And what is mesiras-nefesh? The conviction that it must be this way and no other; this was the Akeidah. (He then finished reading the Iggeres HaKodesh.)
