With the poor theatrical reception of Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, and finally Justice League it seemed the DCEU was finished before it got started. Nearly four years after the theatrical cut left a sour taste in (most) audiences' mouths, thanks to HBO Max, Synder was able to re-cut, re-mix, and finally finish his ultimate vision for Justice League.
