Great study. The 3 false shepherds are judged. A new good shepherd comes, but is rejected by a flock “doomed” to its own slaughter. It’s an amazing OT prophecy of Christ. As Jesus is crucified, the ultimate rejection, the 2 covenants (shepherd’s staffs) are broken between God and the nations, and the nation Israel itself. Only by the blood of Christ can there be restoration. The doomed sheep pay 30 pieces of silver (slave’s wages) for the Good Shepherd’s work. The “doomed” flock then are left in the hands of a worthless shepherd. This worthless shepherd will eventually be subdued, a prophecy of Christ’s second coming.
