Zilda Gama nasceu em 11 de março de 1878, em Três Ilhas, Juiz de Fora (MG). Era a segunda dos 11 filhos de Augusto Cristina da Gama, escrivão de paz, e Elisa Emílio Klörs da Gama, professora estadual. Escreveu contos e poesias para vários periódicos, entre os quais o Jornal do Brasil, a Gazeta de Notícias e a Revista da Semana, todos da antiga capital federal. Ainda jovem, começou a perceber a presença de espíritos. Recebeu espiritualmente mensagens de seu pai e de sua irmã falecidos, que a aconselhavam e a consolavam nos momentos de provação difíceis pelos quais estava passando. Em 1912, recebeu uma mensagem assinada por Allan Kardec. Após essa manifestação, o Codificador propiciou-lhe outros ensinamentos, os quais vieram à luz na obra "Diário dos Invisíveis", em 1929.
