King Albert Fredrick Arthur George known as King George Barracks (KGV1) in the capital was renamed to Josiah Magama Tongogara as President Emerson Mnangagwa ushered in a new era. The ceremony in the capital, Harare, at the military headquarters, brings a new wave of independence and democracy as the country rid itself of the colonial mentality.
KGV1 is where prisoners from former President Robert Mugabe era were kept during the military intervention, leading to him resigning. According to President Emerson Mnangagwa, Wednesday’s event marks the beginning of some renaming of the National Defence University renamed to General Rogers Alfred Nikita Mangena, Headquarters 3 Infantry Brigade in Mutare renamed to Herbert Chitepo and Flyde Airforce Base renamed to Jason Ziyapapa Moyo.
