Roger Cox doet zijn werk als klimaatadvocaat niet uit idealisme, maar uit noodzaak. ‘Zoals je een drenkeling in het water achterna springt’, zegt hij. Hij kán niet anders. Nadat hij in 2006 de documentaire An Inconvenient Truth zag, was wegkijken niet langer mogelijk. Hij stopte al zijn vrije tijd in het bestuderen van het klimaatprobleem en de relevante rechtsgebieden. Zo vond hij een innovatieve manier om overheden en grote bedrijven te dwingen hun CO2-uitstoot te reduceren: via de Duty of Care. Het is niemand toegestaan gevaren voor anderen te creëren terwijl je die redelijkerwijs kunt voorkomen. Daarmee begon Cox een revolutie via de rechtbank: in 2015 won hij een zaak tegen de Nederlandse staat en in 2021 tegen Shell, wat wereldwijd mensen wist te inspireren tot eigen rechtszaken. Nu richt hij, samen met Milieudefensie, zijn pijlen op de ING.
