Zomerradio: Socioloog Milio van de Kamp

Milio van de Kamp stond tijdens zijn jeugd in een ‘constante survival-modus’. Hij groeide op in Amsterdam-West, in een van de armste buurten van het land, met een gewelddadige vader en een moeder die ondanks een hartkwaal achter de bar moest werken. Water en elektriciteit waren bij hem thuis niet vanzelfsprekend. Hij bedacht een plan om uit de armoede te ontsnappen: een universitaire studie. Maar toen hij zijn docent op het vmbo-k daarover vertelde, zei ze: ‘Misschien moet je wat lager mikken.’ Dat deed hij niet. Via talloze omzwervingen studeerde sociale wetenschappen. Inmiddels socioloog en docent aan de UvA en begeleidt hij eerstegeneratiestudenten. Over zijn ervaring met armoede schreef hij een boek getiteld Misschien moet je wat lager mikken.
