2 Pentecostals and a Microphone

Hosts Jaredith Mize & Bryce Kyle discuss theology, faith, and culture from an Apostolic perspective. This show tackles serious social issues such as race, poverty, gay rights, war, etc. We shy away from nothing. This was the first discussion style podcast designed with the Apostolic Pentecostal movement in mind. Jaredith is a UPCI minister, his dad was an ALJC pastor, and his great-grandfather was a PAW pastor, so his roots run deep in the Apostolic movement. Bryce comes from a diverse background of faith experience. He grew up in the Baptist church and spent several years in a charismatic community church before coming to the Apostolic church. He is pursuing his minister's license as well.New episodes release every week (let's be honest, we haven't hit that target in a while but it's still the goal)!

This was a difficult episode to record and it will no doubt be difficult to listen to. Especially if you followed the ministry of Ravi Zacharias and held him in high regard, as we did. It was recently revealed through allegations and a subsequent investigation by RZIM and a third-party law firm that Ravi had participated in an ongoing scheme of sexual abuse against multiple women. This news came close on the heels of his death last year from cancer. Please take the time to listen to the entire episode, including the victim's statement that we added at the end, and read both the statement from RZIM and the law firm's report on the investigation. Doctrine Series: Oneness, the Trinity, and the Nature of God - Part 2

In this episode, we continue a previous discussion of the nature of God, specifically in regard to the doctrines of Oneness and the Trinity. We started this conversation back in 2019 but held off on releasing the rest of the series, due to our desire to give the subject the treatment it deserves. We are finally ready to have the discussion at length. In this episode, which is basically part 2 of the series introduction, we discuss some reasons why this series is necessary, both for our oneness and trinitarian listeners. As this segment of the Doctrine Series continues, we will discuss some of the nuances ofthe debate. We will look at some problematic scriptures, dive into a little textual criticism (can't wait for the backlash from that one...), and specifically talk about Modalism (and why we are not Modalists). Doctrine Series: Oneness, the Trinity, and the Nature of God - Part 1

In this episode, we attempt to lay a groundwork for our discussion of the nature of God, specifically in regards to the doctrines of Oneness and the Trinity. We wanted to take the time to lay out our intentions because of the sensitive nature of the topic. It's too easy to use words as weapons when dealing with deeply held beliefs. We think that we can do better. As Oneness believers, we want to be taken seriously by Trinitarian believers and we believe that the inverse is true, as well. Too many times I've heard Oneness believers bash or ridicule Trinitarians or Trinitarians write us off as heretics or reject our beliefs out of hand. We believe that the time has come for a civil discussion of the issue and we want to be a part of that discussion. As this segment of the Doctrine Series continues, we will discuss some of the nuances of the debate and specifically talk about Modalism (and why we are not Modalists). Thanks to Myles from Portland, Oregon for suggesting that we cover that topic. You can find us on your favorite podcast app or on our website, 2pentecostals.com. Doctrine Series: Orthodoxy

**CAVEAT** **We are very critical of some practices of the church and even more critical of some of the unBiblical aspects of church culture. It is not our intention to offend ANY of our listeners, whether Apostolics, other Pentecostals, Baptists, Catholics, etc. What we do want to do is challenge ALL of our listeners to rethink orthodoxy in light of Scripture. We are especially hard on Apostolics but that is only because we love the church we are a part of and want to hold it to the highest standard. We believe there is a Biblical precedent for this. When Jesus stopped pulling his punches it was with his people, whether his theological peers, the Pharisees ("...generation of vipers...") or the disciples ("...are you so stupid that you still don't understand?"). When Peter was siding with the Judaizers, Paul said, "I withstood him to his face." This is what we are trying to do; call the church that we love to a higher standard. We hope that we have done so with love.**In this episode, we take on the concept of "orthodoxy". We address several important questions in a longer-than-usual and somewhat meandering conversation. What is it? What are the problems that orthodoxy presents for a Bible-based church? As unorthodox as Apostolic Pentecostals seem, do we have our own orthodoxy? Is our orthodoxy Biblical or simply man-made dogma? There must be some value in the consensus of the church, which is basically what orthodoxy is, however, any human consensus can be wrong. We discuss the importance of putting any doctrine or dogma, no matter how widely accepted, to the test of Scripture. Since this episode is so long, we debated splitting it into two episodes, but there didn't seem to be a good place to split it. We hope you enjoy the conversation despite the length. The next episode is a special bonus episode where Bryce and Jaredith discuss some exciting news regarding their ministry. Also, over the next several months, the doctrine series will be interspersed with special interviews with Apostolic authors. So far, we have commitments from Bro. Carlton Coon to discuss his new book, Light in a Dark Place and Sis. Lori Wagner to discuss her new book, Through the Waters: The Life and Ministry of Evangelist Willie Johnson. Doctrine Series: Overview - What is Doctrine and Why Do We Need It?

In the second episode of Season 2 of the podcast, Bryce and Jaredith are launching a new mini-series on the subject of doctrine. This episode gives an overview of what doctrine is and why it is important to the future of the church and to the individual lives of Christians.During the course of this series, we will cover doctrinal topics ranging from Orthodoxy and Ecclesiology to Christology and Eschatology. We will by no means cover every topic under the umbrella of "doctrines of the church", but we will do our best to cover the major, essential doctrines, specifically from an Apostolic Pentecostal worldview. During the course of these discussions, we will also present some opposing views and some nuanced perspectives of our peers.Check out some of these great books on doctrine (Yes, there are many other great books on doctrine, but Bro. Interview with Nathan Maki (Author of The Keeper's Crown)

In episode 21, we sit down for a discussion with Nathan Maki, author of several works of historical fiction, including The War Within Series and his newest release, The Keeper's Crown. We discuss his writing process, Bible quizzing, the new book, and the orphanage that his parents operate in the Congo. Be sure to check out his new book; you won't be disappointed! You can find Bro. Maki's books here:Amazon: https://goo.gl/vvGo5YBarnes & Noble: https://goo.gl/z9KsCKAuthor's Website: www.nathandmaki.comAbout the new book:A Roman soldier in exile, a rebel Jewess, and an Apostle in chains…can faith, hope, and love unite them? Some early reviewers had this to say:“Unequivocally five stars all the way!”“Fans of Francine Rivers’ Mark of the Lion trilogy will enjoy Nathan Maki’s immersive The Keeper’s Crown.”“This novel unfolds like a movie and draws you into the sights, sounds and smells of first century Palestine leaving the reader with the ‘you were there’ experience.”“Impeccably researched, this tale is difficult to put down and is sure to be a favorite of fans of Roman era historical fiction and the story of early Christianity.”“A great read from beginning to end.”In The Keeper’s Crown, readers will see Paul’s life and ministry in an immediate and accessible way, through the eyes of the young soldier who kept him under guard in Rome. The book follows Paul from his arrest in the Temple in Jerusalem, through his trials, transportation to Rome, shipwreck on Malta, imprisonment, appearance before Nero, and his eventual martyrdom. Along the way we meet such familiar figures as the governors Felix and Festus, King Agrippa, Timothy, Onesimus, Epaphroditus, Demas, and Emperor Nero. Readers will see the gospel of repentance, baptism in Jesus’ name, and the infilling of the Holy Ghost played out before them, backed by Paul’s own words from his Epistles. Paul’s courage and determination and the overarching theme of “What is Godly Success?” will challenge believers to dare greatly and obey God’s will no matter the cost. All of this presented in an engaging, action-packed book that gets the message across without being “preachy.” Order yours today!Paul turned the world upside down. Nero set it on fire.Caught between them, can Quintus and Jael survive long enough to find the Truth? From the Back Cover:~Quintus~As a boy, he dared to fight Nero. Worse, he won. Stripped of his family, the love of his life, and his self-respect, he sets out on a quest to win a victor's crown, rescue his parents, and restore his family's honor. But his path to glory in the restless province of Judaea is threatened by the corrupt governor Felix, the murderous priest Melechi, and most of all by the rabble-rousing Paul of Tarsus. When Quintus finds himself in Rome chained to Paul all hope of a crown seems lost, but Paul's example makes him question the true meaning of success. And why does Jael, the mysterious young Jewess who once saved his life, now respond with barely restrained flashes of hate? ~Jael~The Romans took her father and her brother from her. Now Jael vows to fight for her father's faith, fulfill her brother's oath, and avenge their deaths. But the further she travels with Paul and Quintus the more she feels torn. Can she follow her heart and still keep her vow? ~Paul~ He turned the world upside down. Paul never expected to end his ministry in chains, but even still, he is determined to carry the gospel to Rome and the Emperor Nero himself. But what if those who need the gospel most are those closest to him? As the Great Fire strikes Rome, fanning Nero's persecution of the Christians to a white-hot fury, murderous secrets, impossible choices, and steadfast faith will lead to tragedy and triumph.Excerpt from the BookThe prisoner looked over his bare shoulder at Quintus. “Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and uncondemned?” His voice was steady and calm, as if he were asking a newcomer to a bathhouse about the weather outside.A Roman! Quintus froze. If this man’s claim was true, by law they should not even have fettered him. They certainly could not scourge him. “Hold,” he told the inquisitor. “Don’t touch him until I return.”Quintus sprinted the stairs three at a time. He found Lysias nursing a cup of wine and staring blank-faced at the milling crowd in the Temple courts below. Lysias turned and cocked an eyebrow. “Has he broken already? I had him made of sterner stuff.” “Watch what you’re doing with this one,” Quintus said. “This man is a Roman.” The tribune set down his cup so abruptly its contents sloshed over his hand. He didn’t seem to notice. “Take me there.” When they reached the dungeon, the prisoner was still bound as Quintus had left him. His arched back and lean, outstretched arms reminded Quintus of a juniper clinging to a wind-lashed crag. If he felt discomfort from the strained position he gave no sign of it.Lysias paced around to face him. The man’s eyes were closed, and his lips moved without a sound. “Tell me,” the tribune demanded, “are you a Roman?”The bound man looked up and met the tribune’s eyes with a frank gaze. “I am.” “Hmm.” Lysias ran a knuckle back and forth across his lips as he slowly shook his head. “With a great price I obtained this citizenship.” “But I was born free.” The prisoner’s eyes gleamed an inner light. “My name is Paul.”Author Bio and Fun FactsNathan Maki lives in Prescott, Ontario, Canada with his wife Rachel and son Alexander.
