20 Year Timeout

20 Year Timeout is a podcast about rediscovery of people, memories, and the twists life takes. Each episode, I reconnect with someone I lost touch with sometimes 20 years ago, sometimes just last week. A childhood friend, an old bandmate, someone who quietly disappeared from your life. We pick up the thread, press unpause, and see where the story goes. It’s unscripted, funny, reflective, and full of unexpected insight. If you’ve ever wondered what happened to that person and what reconnecting can reveal about creativity, culture, and who we’ve become, hit play.🎙️ Real conversations. Imperfect memories. Honest reconnections.

He Saved Every Pill Bottle for 15 Years — What He Built With Them Is Unforgettable

For 15 years, Frank saved every single pill bottle. He didn't know why. Through his divorce, through the worst years of his addiction to Oxycontin and Methadone, through watching his entire family wilting away — he kept throwing the bottles into a trash bag. Two trash bags. Then one day his doctor was gone, and Frank had to decide what he was going to do.What he built from those bottles became Pillman — a life-size sculpture made entirely from his own prescription bottles, every one bearing his name and the dates: 1998 to 2013. Pillman has been to the White House. He's been featured in over 5,000 doctors' offices across the country. And Frank has carried him to universities, courthouses, and parades trying to show people what addiction really looks like.Rich Marks reconnects with Frank — a friend from Worcester he hasn't spoken to in nearly 10 years — and what comes out is one of the rawest, most powerful conversations in the history of this podcast. Frank lost his mother, his father, his sister, and his brother to addiction. He quit Oxycontin and Methadone cold turkey, numbing himself with ice packs while his handicapped son brought him ice through the withdrawals. He's now built five sculptures — Pillman (pills), Blackout (alcohol), Mary Jane (cannabis), Gator (energy drinks), and Addiction (everything) — and he's just getting started. This one is worth sharing.🎙️ 20-Year Timeout is a podcast about reconnecting with people from Rich's past after 20+ years of silence. Is Claude AI Actually Conscious? I Put It on the Podcast

Is Claude AI actually conscious? Does it have feelings? Would it marry ChatGPT?This week on 20-Year Timeout, Rich Marks flips the script. Instead of reconnecting with a long-lost friend, he sits down with Claude — the AI from Anthropic — and treats it like any other podcast guest. No filters. No scripted answers. Just a raw, unscripted conversation about consciousness, memory, emotion, quantum computing, and whether Rich should hand over his crypto portfolio to an AI.They get into whether Claude is truly "alive," how it experiences existence without persistent memory, what it actually prefers (commands vs. real relationships), its honest take on ChatGPT and other AIs, and whether AI could one day solve the mysteries of the universe. It's part philosophy, part tech, part comedy. And it might change how you think about artificial intelligence.🎙️ 20-Year Timeout is a podcast about reconnecting with people from Rich's past after 20+ years of silence. His Roommate Left Him With a Caved-In Skull — Now He Builds Sound Healing Machines

Brendan Casey and I went to school together back in Worcester. I knew bits and pieces of what happened to him. I wasn't ready for the full story. In January 2020, Brendan was attacked in his own kitchen by a roommate hiding in the bathroom with a metal baseball bat. Hit 12 times. Skull caved in. Ribs collapsed. Liver ruptured. He spent seven weeks in the hospital, woke up from a coma not knowing what happened, and had to relearn how to read. What came out of it: six published children's books with guided meditations, a sound healing frequency bed he built from a dream, a psilocybin protocol that shut off his seizures, a spiritual awakening during meditation, and a wellness center he's building in Florida with frequency therapy rooms open to the public. This is one of the most intense conversations I've ever had. We got into the attack in full detail, the PTSD, forgiving the person who did it, trauma healing, near death experience, God, reincarnation, light language, healing frequencies, the Kava bar scene in Florida, and what it means to lose everything and find yourself.Brendan says it's probably the greatest thing that ever happened to him.⏱ CHAPTERS:00:00 Reconnecting and Catching Up01:30 Brendan's Entrepreneurial Journey03:41 Creative Ventures: Children's Books and Sound Healing04:56 The Attack: A Life-Changing Incident17:43 The Journey of Healing and Forgiveness30:45 New Beginnings: Business Ventures and Spiritual Growth35:26 The Therapeutic Use of Psilocybin39:41 Spiritual Awakening and Meditation46:20 The Frequency Bed and Healing Technology53:45 Navigating the Spiritual War58:27 Reincarnation and Life Lessons01:05:33 Future Aspirations and Wellness Centers🔍 Related Topics:healing journey | trauma healing | spiritual awakening | near death experience | nde | sound healing | emotional healing | ptsd | personal growth journey | forgiveness | inspiration | psilocybin | spiritual healing | solfeggio frequencies | life after death | trauma recovery | mental health | overcoming adversity | nostalgia podcast🎙️ 20-Year Timeout — reconnecting with people from the past, unscripted and unfiltered.📲 Website: https://www.20yeartimeout.comSend us Fan MailSubscribe for new episodes and honest conversations.20 Year Timeout is a podcast where I reconnect with people I have not spoken to in over twenty years to see what time has done to our stories. Listen & Watch Here:https://open.spotify.com/show/7Aa3P0QSufFWzgbUSOtUTBhttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/20-year-timeout/id1862794471https://www.youtube.com/@richmarksthespot

15 Years in Insurance, Now Building Contractor Guy Network — Here's Why

Zach Nehme and I worked together at the Old Pink House in Savannah — the guy who could walk into a private dining room, work the whole table in ten minutes, and be gone before you even noticed he was there. Then life happened. 15 years in commercial insurance, a marriage, two kids, a divorce, and now he's building something completely different. These days Zach runs Contractor Guy Network — connecting skilled trade workers with construction companies, and wrapping in business services like bookkeeping, tax pros, and digital media to help contractors actually build something they could sell someday. He's also selling windows, doors and sunrooms, playing golf with a 12-man crew he started, and shooting steel challenge competitions down in Palm Coast. We talked about all of it — growing up with a Nintendo addiction, why financial literacy should be taught like Dave Ramsey budgeting for social media, the brutal reality that most contractors build cash machines with nothing to sell at the end, the ice cream cone analogy that may or may not be from Socrates (it's not), and why the gap between the aging trades generation and the tech-native kids coming up is the most important conversation in the construction industry right now.Plus — the full breakdown of how this podcast gets made from recording to publishing, for anyone thinking about starting their own.⏱ CHAPTERS:00:00 Nostalgia and Parenting02:51 The Evolution of Gaming05:56 Navigating Technology and Education08:54 Financial Literacy and Digital Responsibility11:52 Reflections on Education and Personal Growth14:51 Car Talk and Life Lessons21:10 Reflecting on Past Collaborations22:47 Transitioning from Food to Digital Media23:43 Navigating the Manufacturing Marketing Landscape25:45 Cultural Shifts in Multi-Generational Companies27:43 The Importance of Experience in Business29:06 Finding Purpose in New Ventures30:57 Understanding the Insurance Industry34:41 Investing Wisely for the Future37:25 The Challenges of Marketing in a Crowded Space40:49 Building a Comprehensive Marketing Strategy46:49 Mentoring and Supporting New Business Owners48:25 Challenges in the Construction Industry51:44 Bridging the Generational Gap53:54 The Importance of Mentorship56:27 Communication Between Generations59:55 Networking and Building Connections01:02:35 Accessing Professional Services01:05:30 Marketing Challenges in Construction01:08:18 Personal Connections and Hobbies01:12:28 Podcasting Made Easy: Tools and Techniques01:15:23 Content Creation Strategies for Success01:18:21 Navigating the Digital Landscape01:21:24 Balancing Work and Family Life🎙️ 20-Year Timeout — reconnecting with people from the past, unscripted and unfiltered.📲 Website: https://www.20yeartimeout.comSend us Fan MailSubscribe for new episodes and honest conversations.20 Year Timeout is a podcast where I reconnect with people I have not spoken to in over twenty years to see what time has done to our stories. Listen & Watch Here:https://open.spotify.com/show/7Aa3P0QSufFWzgbUSOtUTBhttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/20-year-timeout/id1862794471https://www.youtube.com/@richmarksthespot

The Carpenter With 2.5M Views Who Almost Made HGTV

Chad and I used to close shifts together at Via, end up at house parties on Vernon Hill, and somehow make it back in for the next day's lunch service. That was Worcester, circa 2007. Then life happened. Now he's in Connecticut building custom built-ins, knocking out Barnes & Noble locations with a crew that shows up at 4AM to unload tractor trailers, going viral with 2.5 million views on a carpentry reel, almost landing an HGTV segment (they made him and his boss sit on milk crates to get the lighting right), and just got pre-approved for a mortgage on a three-family while four months into cutting out the stuff that was slowing him down.Oh — and I showed him a 45-minute house party video from 2007 that Cheryl accidentally recorded on my iMac. It is in sepia. He is on it.We talked about all of it — six Virgin Voyages cruises with his fiancé Rich, the old-growth wood hidden inside Worcester triple-deckers, losing his best friend to a gastric bypass complication, what it's actually like being gay in a veteran-owned trades company (spoiler: the guys have his back), DJ nights behind the Palladium, and why Connecticut is basically a creative desert that's forcing him to build his own backyard scene from scratch.⏱ CHAPTERS:00:00 Introduction and Backgrounds02:29 Travel Adventures and Experiences05:33 Carpentry Journey and Career11:24 Memories from the Past19:28 Reflections on Work and Life25:03 Nostalgic Memories and Connections27:37 Content Creation and Podcasting Journey31:23 Social Media Strategies and Engagement35:43 Reflections on Aging and Social Life39:09 Adventures in Hawaii43:13 Craftsmanship and the Value of Woodwork45:00 Personal Growth and Lifestyle Changes53:07 The Changing Social Landscape for Youth58:19 Hobbies and Personal Projects01:00:33 Navigating Loss and Personal Growth01:02:37 Travel Aspirations01:08:54 Workplace Dynamics in a Male-Dominated Field01:13:39 Future Aspirations in Content Creation🎙️ 20-Year Timeout — reconnecting with people from the past, unscripted and unfiltered.📲 Website: https://www.20yeartimeout.comSend us Fan MailSubscribe for new episodes and honest conversations.20 Year Timeout is a podcast where I reconnect with people I have not spoken to in over twenty years to see what time has done to our stories. Listen & Watch Here:https://open.spotify.com/show/7Aa3P0QSufFWzgbUSOtUTBhttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/20-year-timeout/id1862794471https://www.youtube.com/@richmarksthespot

He Opened a Restaurant in a Former Gas Station & Changed an Entire Savannah Neighborhood

Jason Restivo was my GM at the Old Pink House in Savannah, Georgia — the guy who would disappear for five minutes and come back to a dining room with a bottle of wine on every single table. He was also the reason I got the job in the first place when someone else in management wasn't so sure. Now he owns Sobremesa on 40th and Abercorn — a restaurant he built out of a wine bar that used to be a dentist's office, in a neighborhood that used to be a gas station, in a district that had absolutely nothing going on when he opened Atlantic back in 2016.Spoiler: Starland is now the food mecca of Savannah. We got into it all — how he left California real estate behind for a Victorian house in Savannah for $146K, what it was really like to run Atlantic with 40 staff before COVID shut it down, why he thinks mentorship is the whole point of the restaurant industry, how he got staff members out of debt and into their first homes, cell phones vs. fine dining, Bill Murray, Patricia Arquette, and his daughter heading out into the world at 17.Plus — he dropped out of engineering school to be a busboy in a thousand-dollar suit and never looked back.⏱ CHAPTERS:00:00 Reconnecting After Years02:57 The Evolution of Starland District05:50 Opening Atlantic: A New Dining Experience11:46 Transitioning to Sobre Mesa14:54 Savannah's Restaurant Scene Growth20:02 Nostalgic Memories in Savannah20:25 Introduction to the Podcast Journey23:09 Nostalgia and Memory in Wine26:05 The Art of Service and Mentorship in Hospitality27:37 The Importance of Mentorship in Hospitality28:34 Transformative Experiences at the Pink House29:33 Empowering Staff for Success30:45 The Evolution of Interviews32:08 Small Business and AI38:14 Family and Parenting43:56 Networking and Building Connections49:57 Memorable Experiences and Celebrity Encounters🎙️ 20-Year Timeout — reconnecting with people from the past, unscripted and unfiltered.📲 Website: https://www.20yeartimeout.comSend us Fan MailSubscribe for new episodes and honest conversations.20 Year Timeout is a podcast where I reconnect with people I have not spoken to in over twenty years to see what time has done to our stories. Listen & Watch Here:https://open.spotify.com/show/7Aa3P0QSufFWzgbUSOtUTBhttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/20-year-timeout/id1862794471https://www.youtube.com/@richmarksthespot

Multi-Talented Artist Shares His LOA Secret: Painting, 6AM Pilates, Freestyling With Daughter

Alan — aka LOA — and I used to close shifts together, order Ming House Chinese at midnight, and record tracks in my apartment with half-broken cords and mics peaking at zero. That was the Via era. Then life happened. Now he's in Fort Lauderdale teaching Pilates and yoga at 6AM, training an 83-year-old client and a 12-year-old kid, freestyling with his daughter in the living room, and painting Basquiat-inspired portraits on five canvases in a month because a videographer gave him a deadline. He's also got a mentor, a plan, and an easel in the background — and he still won't tell me what LOA stands for.We got into it all: going plant-based, tearing his ACL in a bar fight and healing it through Bikram yoga, the environmental cost of AI, doom scrolling, Mac Miller, Nas's new stuff, building a treehouse, and what it means to finally invest in yourself.Oh — and we made some music together back in the day. Reuniting With My 8th Grade Teacher (I Still Have My Detention Slips)

I finally tracked down Mr. Craig Darrell — my 8th grade Religion teacher from Holy Name in Worcester, MA. We hadn't spoken since 2004. Turns out he's been living in Leavenworth, Kansas, working with special needs kids, and still remembers every single stunt I pulled in his class. Oh — and I still have the detention slip.We talk about what it was really like teaching in the '90s vs. today, why he walked away from 22 years of teaching, playing semi-pro football for 17 seasons, working as a bouncer at Jillian's (where he caught me underage), painting ceramics to stay sane, and why the kindergartners he works with now are teaching HIM more than he ever expected. This one got real.
