    5B TIM CURRY TRIBUTE (27 AUG 26)

Yesterday, the world lost Tim Curry at the age of 80; an actor whose career was built in the wonderfully strange corners of entertainment. Depending on when you first encountered him, Tim Curry was either a flamboyant scientist, a terrifying clown, a suspicious butler, a scheming hotel concierge, a legendary pirate or the voice behind one of animation’s most eccentric fathers. This morning, we’re celebrating the characters, performances and glorious theatricality that made him unforgettable. I have six Tim Curry trivia questions for the team. Names are your buzzers and if you survive the quiz, we have one final Tim Curry performance that has been hiding dangerously close to home.

5B BASADI WOMEN IN MUSIC AWARDS WITH MANAILENG MAPHIKE AND BOIPELO “RADIO BAE” MOOKETSI (27 AUG 26)

The fifth Basadi in Music Awards will be broadcast across two nights on SABC2 and SABC Plus: the Main Awards on Saturday, 29 August at 21:00, followed by the Vanguard Awards on Sunday, 30 August at 21:00. For five years, the Basadi in Music Awards have worked to ensure that the women shaping African music and entertainment are not only heard, but properly seen, celebrated and remembered. This year’s milestone edition, themed REWIND: Your BIMA, Your Way, unfolded across two nights at the Joburg Theatre, honouring major recording artists as well as the presenters, producers, managers, journalists, stylists and other women helping to power the industry behind the scenes. Those celebrations are now coming to television and one of the winners is very much part of the 5FM family. Boipelo “Radio Bae” Mooketsi was named Entertainment Radio Presenter of the Year. She joins us in studio alongside entertainment attorney and Basadi in Music Awards Advisory Board member Manaileng Maphike to look back at five years of Basadi, the importance of recognising women across the entire creative ecosystem and, of course, to celebrate Radio Bae’s big win.

    5B GUESS THE CELEBRITY (27 AUG 26)

He came from suburbia dressed like the ambassador of a country that never existed, Asked powerful people questions so foolish their answers became evidence, And proved stupidity can be devastating when the idiot is secretly the smartest man in the room. He turned tinted glasses, sportswear and questionable grammar into investigative equipment, Made politicians explain civilisation to someone apparently losing the argument with English, Then became so convincing that distinguished guests forgot they were inside a joke.

5B WHEN CONTENT BECOMES AN ECONOMY - WEZA MATOMANE (24 AUG 26)

This weekend, the nominees for the 2026 South African Social Media Awards were unveiled in Rosebank, and the list tells a much bigger story than simply who might leave with a trophy in November.  Creators are now building audiences and businesses across education, gaming, podcasting, fashion, food, sport, photography, radio and kasi content. In a country where almost one in every two young people in the labour market cannot find work, social media is becoming more than somewhere to be seen. For some South Africans, it is becoming a workplace, a storefront, a production studio and an entry point into the economy.  But how much of the creator economy is a sustainable industry, and how much of it is still built on unpredictable algorithms, unpaid labour and the hope that something goes viral? Joining 5 Breakfast is media entrepreneur, voice-over artist and Co-Founder and Director of the South African Social Media Awards, WEZA MATOMANE.

5B INTERVIEW - “BORN AFTER THE FIRE” WITH LUDWEKAZI NDLAZI AND NAMILE MKHIZE (18 AUG 26)

This morning on 5 Breakfast, we’re getting into a new SABC1 documentary series called Born After The Fire. The series marks the 50th anniversary of the Soweto Uprisings by looking at South Africa through the eyes of the generation born into democracy - the young people who inherited the freedom others fought for, but are still living with the unanswered questions around education, unemployment, leadership, opportunity and equality. Across 13 weeks, Born After The Fire uses June 16 as both a historical anchor and a mirror for the present. Each episode connects the legacy of 1976 to the issues shaping South Africa now: education, employment, entrepreneurship, social justice, technology, health, arts and culture, identity and nation-building. What makes the series powerful is that it is not just looking back. It is asking whether the dreams of the young people who marched for freedom have actually been realised, and what responsibility this generation now has in shaping the next 50 years of South Africa.

How far would you go to find a lotto ticket? What is the most valuable thing you have ever lost?
