5B AFRICA TOUR - CÔTE D'IVOIRE - AHMED SETS UP KORHOGO — CULTURE, FOOD AND THE NORTH (14 MAY 26) 1
The Côte d’Ivoire tour heads north to Korhogo, where the pace, landscape, and culture of the country begin to shift in powerful ways. Guiding this part of the journey is Ahmed, who introduces listeners to the cultural heartbeat of the Senufo region through the people, traditions, and daily life that define the city. As he walks through Korhogo’s markets, food culture, craft traditions, and community spaces, Ahmed paints a picture of a place where history is carried not only through landmarks, but through the hands of artisans, farmers, traders, cooks, and woodcarvers keeping generations of culture alive. Through his perspective, listeners experience a side of Côte d’Ivoire that feels deeply rooted in heritage — a version of travel that moves beyond postcards and into the everyday rhythms of northern life. This chapter of the tour reveals how many identities can exist within one country, and how Korhogo tells the story of Côte d’Ivoire through culture, tradition, and the people shaping it every day.

5B AFRICA TOUR - CÔTE D'IVOIRE - THE BASILICA OF OUR LADY OF PEACE (14 MAY 26)
The Côte d’Ivoire tour arrives at one of the country’s most extraordinary landmarks: the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in Yamoussoukro. Rising above the city with towering columns, stained glass, marble, statues, and an immense dome inspired by St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, the Basilica is more than a place of worship, it is a symbol of faith, ambition, history, and national identity. Consecrated in 1990 by Pope John Paul II and designed by architect Pierre Fakhoury, the structure is often recognised as the largest church building in the world by area. This audio journey goes beyond the scale of the building to explore the stories inside it: the history behind its construction, the symbolism woven into its glass, flags, and artwork, and the quiet details that give the space its emotional power. From a distance, the Basilica impresses with size, but up close, it reveals a deeper story about Côte d’Ivoire, where faith, politics, beauty, pride, and controversy all echo within its walls.

5B AFRICA TOUR- CÔTE D'IVOIRE - OLIVIER THE IVORIAN PHOTOGRAPHER
The Côte d’Ivoire tour takes a more personal turn as the journey moves beyond landmarks and into the perspective of the people who truly shape how the country is seen. The conversation shifts to Olivier, an Ivorian photographer whose work captures the textures, moods, and quiet in-between moments that often go unnoticed. Through his lens, listeners gain a deeper understanding of how Ivorians see their cities, culture, and identity. Offering a powerful perspective on the story Côte d’Ivoire wants the rest of Africa, and the world, to understand.

5B AFRICA TOUR: CÔTE D'IVOIRE - GRAND BASSAM TOUR & NZIMA KING REFELCTION
Nick has made his way to Grand-Bassam, a coastal city with history in its walls, salt in the air, and the kind of old-world charm that immediately tells you: this place has seen things. Grand-Bassam brings a different kind of rhythm. Slower. More ceremonial. More reflective. The kind of place where you don’t just arrive, you are received. Formally introduced and welcomed at the Mayor’s office, which is a beautiful way to open this leg of the tour. Because before you can tell the story of a place, it helps to be welcomed into it properly. This is one of Côte d’Ivoire’s most historic cities. Nick moves through the old heart of Grand-Bassam, through streets and spaces that carry the weight of history. There’s the coastal texture, the old administrative feel, the heritage architecture, and then a deeper cultural layer: the Nzima people and the traditional authority connected to the city.

Good morning from Côte d’Ivoire, where the air is warm, the streets are wide awake, and Abidjan immediately makes one thing very clear: this city has main character energy. And naturally, the first proper cultural stop had to be the most important research fa- cility in any city: the street food. We move from the streets of Abidjan to the soil of San Pedro. Côte d’Ivoire is the world’s biggest cocoa producer so we also visited a cocoa farm.

5B WELLNESS WEDNESDAY - EXERCISE AT YOUR DESK (06 MAY 26)
For decades, fitness culture glorified long, high-intensity sessions. But recent peer reviewed studies challenge that idea. Research in the British Journal of Sports Medicine (2022) found that “exercise snacks”, short bursts of movement lasting 2–5 minutes, can significantly improve cardiovascular and metabolic health when accumulated throughout the day. Climbing stairs during work breaks, performing squats while waiting for coffee, or taking brisk 5-minute walks after meals can together rival traditional gym sessions in total health impact. Pilates classes are very in at the moment. The ones where you get on a machine and basically do intense core work for an hour straight. The gym gurlies have been putting their rugby player boyfriends to the test and the gents have been nearly crying! Why not turn your very own desk/ office into a pilates studio.
