$1k won’t buy a nice BMW, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Applying History
Episode 89: Today’s show answers listener questions about investing a small portfolio. This is a follow up to Episode 16: Saving vs Investing. My philosophy is much different than most in the Investment Industry- I don’t think you should Invest until you’ve built a substantial Savings nest egg. You should first learn to EARN (ie get a job or start a business), then SAVE, then INVEST. Put your effort into what has the most payoff- which in the beginning will be EARNING and SAVING. The Investment Industry wants you to “invest” so that they can charge you fees. The deck is stacked against people with small portfolios. Everyone asks me how to make a good $1k investment…but no one ever asks where they can buy a nice BMW with $1k. Because they KNOW you can’t buy a nice BMW with a small sum of money…the same is true of investment opportunities. Watch the Fed & 50 dma this week, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty
Episode 58:  Today the S&P500 broke below its 50 day moving average, the NASDAQ is resting on its. The 50 day line is a key indicator, watch to see if it ultimately acts as support for the indexes.  If not the breach could result in a fall to the 200 dma (and below).  That would take the S&P500 to about 1945, which in my humble opinion is likely since that’s less than a 2% drop.  Today the S&P500 was down 0.63% with intraday fluctuation of 1.8%. On Wednesday the Federal Reserve will hold a press conference- they’ll try to placate the markets.  Watch to see the reaction of Wall Street.  The Fed may be losing their grasp as the manipulator of last resort. The real story is reflected in bond yields.  The 10 year Treasury yield continues to drop, now at around 2.12%.  That’s a sure sign of concern among major institutional investors.  If they’re concerned, you should be too. What is the perfect stock trading system? Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty
Episode 57:  The perfect stock trading system is the one that works best for you.  Don’t believe the scammer’s claims that their back tested algorithm is fail-safe.  The same goes for late night TV infomercials that tout real estate flipping or get rich options trading schemes. In stock trading, as well as life…you need to develop your own methods that reflect and resonate with your inner abilities and passions.  What works for others won’t necessarily work for you. Your creator made you unique and different from all other creatures- take advantage of that and make something of it. News sources & avoiding media hype, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty
Episode 47: My news sources are very simple. – Firstly, I avoid visual media of any kind (ie no broadcast, cable or internet TV). – To find the truth, I triangulate between the New York Times & the Wall Street Journal. – Investor’s Business Daily is a good reference for current stock market trends. – The Financial Times, Reuters, Bloomberg, The Economist, & Forbes are newsworthy. – Go directly to the source, many government & industry groups make their data easily accessible. – REMEMBER: everyone has an agenda, everyone is trying to sell you something. How I’m playing this Uptrend, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty
Episode 40:  I’m playing this uptrend all in but not foolishly. My positions are spread over five groups: General Market, US Dollar, Transportation, Staples, & Utilities.  I believe the global economy is extremely brittle and for that reason have limited my exposure to just a few individual stocks; therefore, I’ve tried to mitigate risk by putting the vast majority of my assets in ETFs. Is investing in the stock market the same as gambling?
Episode 33:  Investing in the stock market isn’t anything like gambling- gambling has better odds ! Don’t be deceived- no “expert” can accurately predict the economy or stock market.  There are no secret algorithms or trading strategies.  There are no determinate odds, there is only risk and uncertainty. That doesn’t mean we can’t profit from stock trading.  It just means that there are no easy solutions, there are no get rich quick opportunities.  Production is the source of wealth. [wealth building principle #3] Market review- IBD has the market in correction.  Be cautious. Mortgage debt is flaxen shackles, Obamacare propaganda at WebMD and more
Episode 31:   Mortgage debt- whether you pay off the mortgage or not, the point is to lead a prudent lifestyle so that you own your house and it doesn’t own you. Should you pay off your mortgage early?  That depends…we discuss some options. The main take away on debt- the interest fee isn’t the biggest penalty, it’s the use of leverage to lead a life that’s beyond what you can afford.  The danger is: not living within your means. In this episode we also cover Obamacare propaganda and some other news tidbits. Volatile markets and a rising dollar, Triple Witching Expiration, Alibaba IPO
Episode 28:  The markets are extremely volatile and the US dollar is rising.  IBD’s market status has moved back under pressure after only a few days of uptrend.  My take can be found here:  http://www.investablewealth.com/markets-volatile-while-the-us-dollar-rises/ The global economy is slowing.  The rising dollar may hurt exporters and reduce foreign profits because of unfavorable exchange rates.  Be cautious. Credit card incentives, Investing in currencies, US Dollar appears to be in an uptrend
Episode 18: Credit card usage…enjoy the incentives but pay off the balance monthly. I don’t trade on the FOREX but I do use ETFs to take advantage of movements in the US Dollar (UUP & UDN). UUP appears to be in an upward trend. It’s above the 50 day moving average and has broken through short term resistance. The 50 day has crossed the 200- this is a very bullish sign. As the Fed continues to tapper, the European Central Bank appears to be easing, this should further help the US dollar. I don’t trade commodities but I do use options, especially protective puts. Saving vs Investing, You should be saving at least 20%
Episode 16: Saving vs Investing: Earn + Save + Invest = Wealth Learning to SAVE precedes learning to INVEST. Most people want to skip ahead to Investing, because it’s thought to be more glamorous. That’s how the media and the financial industry have propagandized the message. The industry wants you to “invest”…so that they can charge you fees. Before you can invest, you need to save a substantial “nest egg”; otherwise the rewards for your efforts will be minimal. Mark Twain said, “You should be more concerned with the return OF your principle than the return ON your principle”. As you begin to build your nest egg, your net worth will be most impacted by your SAVING habits, not your investing achievements. Save at least 20%…remember wealth building principle 10: Wealth is a lifestyle.
