    Alex Apostolakis on Workskil Australia's Ready To Work Program

    Workskil Australia, our largest not-for-profit employment and community services provider, has officially opened its new Darwin office and expanded into Alice Springs, with plans for a presence in Tennant Creek, Katherine and Nhulunbuy. 8CCC's Kate Lyons-Dawson spoke with their General Manager Youth, Justice and Industry, Alex Apostolakis to hear how this pilot Ready To Work program will support people with criminal histories into stable employment. Through the two-year trial program, Territorians in custody or serving a Community Corrections order are able to access mentoring and personalised training to help them land a job upon release. They'’ve received 295 referrals to date, including around 70 in the first two days of services in Alice Springs which only launched last week.     Close Pine Gap Convergence Bus From Naarm with Lloyd Riman

    People from all over the continent are converging on Mparntwe Alice Springs for the Close Pine Gap - Sacred Land Back Convergence this weekend. A bus load of committed activists and travellers have arrived from Naarm Melbourne hoping to meet with like minded souls and make sense of the present state of the world. They come to attend panels of experts in social justice and first nations struggles, and to hear the story from historians, storytellers, elders and local mob, of land taken without consent to build a world wide surveillance facility, linked to death and destruction across the globe.     Oonga Barb Flick Presents Workshop for Sacred Land Back Convergence

    Oongi Barb Flick is a Yuwaalaayi/Gomeroi/Bigambul woman, who comes from a family of activists for social justice and Indigenous rights. She spoke with 8CCC's Kate Lyons-Dawson about her workshop with Professor Richard Tanter as part of the Close Pine Gap - Sacred Land Back Convergence happening 18-20 July in Mparntwe Alice Springs - US Imperial Power Projection from Northern Australia. Barbara Flick was director of the Alice Springs-based Institute for Aboriginal Development IAD and a core member of the Alice Springs Peace Group, which organised the 1987 convergence on Pine Gap, which called for the closure not only of Pine Gap, but of bases right across the Asia-Pacific, as a first step towards the demilitarisation and decolonisation of the entire region. She helped establish Redfern’s first Aboriginal health and legal services in the 1970s, was coordinator at Western Aboriginal Legal Service, Dubbo, and served as Secretary on the Interim NSW Aboriginal Land Council.     'Make The World A More Peaceful and Safe Place...It's Time We Closed This Base'

    2026 marks 60 years since the Pine Gap Agreement was signed between Australia & the US. This weekend's convergence builds the strength and internationalism of the multi-generational movement against the Pine Gap base. Hundreds of people from across Australia are set to attend the sold out three-day Close Pine Gap - Sacred Land Back convergence from July 18-20 on Arrernte Country, Mparntwe/Alice Springs, Northern Territory. Those gathered are calling for the closure of the US military intelligence base Pine Gap, for an end to the US alliance, and for the sacred land the base occupies to be returned to Arrernte custodians, who never consented to the base.     ACF CEO Adam Bandt in Mparntwe

    Australian Conservation Foundation CEO Adam Bandt has been in the NT to visit communities and find out more about the fracking projects and see for himself the impact of buffel.     ASTC June Meeting with Mayor Asta Hill

    8CCC Brekky Show caught up with Mparntwe Alice Springs Mayor Asta Hill post June Council Meeting to talk through some of the highlights of this month's session. The Council has adopted the Municipal Plan and Budget, which means that the Council Chamber's tech can now be upgraded for future streaming and recording. We talked about the community consultation around the Plan and how this will be fed back into Council motions and processes. Mayor Hill also announced the engagement of Renew Australia to augment the revitalisation of the Mall and kickstart bringing vibrant businesses and activity into the CBD. The Strategic Plan 2026 - 2030 has been adopted and additional measures to support homelessness has been endorsed.     Local architect, Bobbie Bayley visited 8CCC Brekky show to announce the first event in the Mparntwe Speaks series for 2026: a deep dive into climate adaptation and energy retrofits in Aboriginal housing from the RACE to 2030 project. Join Clayton Reeves and Phil Hespe from the SA Remote and Aboriginal Housing Team as they unpack this landmark project—bringing together the work from South Australian Housing Authority, University of South Australia, the SA Department for Energy and Mining, and 15 industry partners under the RACE to 2030 banner.     Big Day Out In Harmony 2026 with Shihab, Thamanna & Jenelia

    Shihab Rahman has 18 years of educational experience, working as a teacher in India, Kuwait and Australia and joined the MCSCA Board in 2025. He was on 8CCC Brekky Show to chat about this year's Big Day Out In Harmony and support the performers. Thamanna Shihab is a member of the Indian Semi Classical Dance group - Alice Springs Malayalee Association (AMA) performance, who has previously been on the show to talk about her acting role in the short film, First Drop. She was joined by fellow AMA performer Jenelia Subeesh, who also performs with Team J Dance, a group of girls who came together and formed a group and started performing last year in Mparntwe/Alice Springs. The group has five girls - Jennifer, Jenelia, Julia (3 sisters) and Malavika and Madhvi, who have been dancing from the age of 3 and have been a professional dance group from the age of 10. J Dance have participated in many dance competitions in both Australia & the UK, winning second prize in Australia’s biggest Indian dance competition, DANCE 4 OZ (2026). The group performs different styles of dancing including: Indian Bollywood, classical, hip hop, jazz and contemporary.     Independent Inquiry Into AUKUS - Cameron Leckie - IPAN

    Following the announcement on Tuesday that Peter Garrett will head a public inquiry into AUKUS, 8CCC Brekky spoke to retired Australian Defence Force Major Cameron Leckie, spokesperson from Independent and Peaceful Australia Network (IPAN), to dig deeper into the repercussions of this and the Deputy Prime Minister's announcement in Singapore of yet another change to the AUKUS deal.     ASTC May meeting with Asta Hill

    After a shaky start to the live stream on antiquated equipment, the May Alice Springs Town Council went ahead, assuring the members of the public in the gallery that funds have been committed for the infrastructure's upgrade. Proceedings were recorded but not able to be live streamed, so you can now listen back on their website. Prayers began acknowledging the family of Kumanjayi White's family in the wake of the announcement that no charges would be laid for his death. Mayor Asta Hill spoke on 8CCC about this month's meeting, with some highlights being the new Whistleblower Policy and the report on homelessnes. T%he Whistleblower Policy has been endorsed to strengthen good governance, accountability and integrity across the organisation, Council has obligations to report suspected improper conduct and ensure protections are in place for those who speak up, providing a clear framework for Council team members and Elected Members to safely raise concerns and reinforcing a culture of transparency.     Alice Springs Library Consultation feedback with Tonielle Dempers

    Vice President Kelsey Branford, a Finke Desert Race committee member since 2002, shared with Brekky listeners the 50 Year celebration plans for the race this weekend. A tireless volunteer pumping endless hours into making this the best year ever, she was joined by Council's hard-working Community Projects & Events Officer, Ola Rzeszowska.     Tara Tiba Headlines Big Day Out In Harmony

    This year's Big Day Out in Harmony is bigger than ever with over 230 performers and the headline act  Australian-Iranian musician Tara Tiba. Now based in Perth, Tara released two studio albums: A Persian Dream (2014) and OMID (2019) (which means Hope), which she dedicated  to all the people dealing with mental health issues. is a playful exploration of the musical traditions shared by Iran and Cuba after the Spanish took Middle Eastern soul to Latin America. Tara spoke with 8CCC's Kate Lyons-Dawson about the many years, having contracted a virus which developed into the debilitating MECFS Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), that kept her house bound and unable to perform.     Chloe Reid & HuaXuan Society at Big Day Out In Harmony

    As part of the 8CCC highlight of Big Day Out in Harmony, 8CCC spoke with Chloe Reid who has played a key part in arranging the HuaXuan Society’s participation in BDOIH for the last couple of years, as well as a huge role in organising Lunar New Year. The HuaXuan Society’s activities focus on providing opportunities for the promotion of Mandarin traditional culture for people who come from a wide range of countries. Chloe explained that due to migration there is multigenerational Mandarin culture that exists in diaspora across the globe.     Dr Felix Ho is Australian Volunteer of the Year 2026

    Dr Felix Ho has dedicated more than three decades to volunteering, beginning with St John Ambulance cadets at just 13 years old, and now his years of volunteering have been recognised in winning the inaugural Australian Volunteer of the Year award. A highly respected volunteer leader, clinician and mentor, Felix contributes extensively at local, national and international levels across emergency response, youth development and disaster preparedness.     What a great time for local music in Mparntwe Alice Springs!     Felix Meyer opens new Youth Media Centre in Mparntwe

    Felix Meyer, behind Maybe Eat Media - a Central Australian digital media and immersive technology company, joined Brekky in the 8CCC studio to talk about their progress towards a long-term staged development model, beginning with location-based virtual reality entertainment and expanding into education, training, cultural preservation and wellbeing initiatives over time.     Watch this Space’s current exhibition is CRISÁLIDA, an interplay between artificial and natural, the artists wrestle with their relationships to time, intimacy, landscape and money through the lens of the body. A first collaboration between dance artist Ashleigh Musk and video artist Ivan Trigo Miras, CRISÁLIDA is an immersive installation blending video, sound and the body to create a space for introspection.
