Tom Murphy – GPYS 336
The Montreal arts & entertainment podcast that asks Montreal comedian Tom Murphy: What’s your favourite Disney movie? That question asked, of course, by Oren Shbiro back in episode 334. On this week’s episode we welcome Tom Murphy to the show. Tom hosts what he describes as an old school open mic at Ye Olde Orchard on Monkland every Sunday night at 8 pm where anybody can show up, grab the mic and show off whatever they’ve got. Tom’s also moving away in a few months so this might be his first and last time on Go Plug Yourself. Tom Murphy, we barely knew you. Walter J. Lyng and Chris Venditto are on to co-host this one and Troy Stark jumps on a few times as well. Keep tabs on whatever Tom is doing in Montreal and beyond when he soon moves away by following him on Instagram @tomdlmurphy – listen, he’s only like 19 followers away from hitting 1000 followers so let’s get him there, ok? Enjoy the show and Go Plug Yourself – Credit Where Credit is Due As always, a big thank you to the providers of our theme song: Leighland Beckman and Aural Turpitude! Chris Venditto is another funny person in Montreal who you can see all over the place and if you don’t want to miss him take the stage you should follow him on all the socials. He’s @chrisvenditto on Twitter and Instagram so you should follow him on those two things. He also produces shows with the guys at Perfect Bite Productions who you should also follow on Instagram and on Facebook. Keith does all sorts of things here on 9to5.cc, he works with the other founders on 9to5 (illustrated), co-hosts our two podcasts: The 9to5 Entertainment System and Go Plug Yourself and sometimes blogs here as The Perspicacious Geek. Walter J. Lyng is a stand-up comedian based out of Montreal, you should follow him on Twitter @wallygoodtimes and on Facebook: Walter J. Lyng Troy Stark is yet another amazing Montreal comedian and promoter who indulges me in co-hosting this wonderful little show of ours. You can catch him pretty often at the World’s Smallest Comedy Night and Cheap Laughs at Rustik Pub, both of which he produces. The post Tom Murphy – GPYS 336 appeared first on 9to5 (dot cc).

9ES362: False Prophets
If you have not been following hilarious drama surrounding The Onion’s attempt to purchase InfoWars then you’re missing out. Look, it’s even being reported on the BBC. Something that I did not actually know about InfoWars is that Alex Jones thinks of himself as a kind of prophet. Well, at least Tucker Carlson thinks so. “He’s channeling something, I’ve asked him about it. ‘How did you do that?’ At length, during dinner on my barn recently. We’re talking about this. ‘How’d you do that?’ ‘I don’t know. It just came to me.’ And that’s real. That is real. The supernatural is real and I don’t know why it’s hard for for the modern mind, I guess because it’s a materialist mind to accept that.” “That’s not a new phenomenon. It’s happened throughout history. There are people called prophets, and there are people who were prophets who weren’t called prophets, but there are people who have information or parts of information, bits of information, visions of information come to them and then they relay it.” We’re in the wrong business, kids. Anyways, we talk a little about some upcoming horror flicks, namely Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil and Mike Flanagan’s Clayface, both of which have trailers that are out now. We kick things off by talking about the unlikely Game 7 victory of the Montreal Canadiens over the Tampa Bay Lightning but I promise you we get good and nerdy after that’s out of the way. On this week’s Garbage Time we talk about how and why Eurotrip practically killed an entire film genre (and here’s the link the video that I reference), Jon watched Crank: High Voltage which leads to a deep dive into Jason Statham’s career and we wrap things up with, you guessed it, more hockey talk because the Habs are still in the playoffs and 66% of us love ourselves some hockey! If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated. GPYS 334: Oren Shbiro
The Montreal arts & entertainment podcast that asks Montreal comedian Oren Shbiro: “What was the last time you got lost?” That question was asked of course by our previous guest Steve Leckman from Programmes Coyote on our last episode. This week, Chris Venditto and I welcome Oren Shbiro to the show. Oren joined us at the back of Grumpy’s to talk about connecting with audiences in Montreal and online, the rush of comedy and figuring out the tempo of a headlining set of comedy. Speaking of headlining: Oren’s got his first ever headlining set at the Comedy Nest coming up on April 26th presented by On Da Clock so you should probably buy tickets for that here. Oren is one of Montreal’s best working comedians and honestly if you take away one thing from this podcast it’s that you should probably go out and see more local comedy. Oh hey – did we mention that our own Chris Venditto will be performing a headlining showcase at The Comedy Nest on May 31st as well? Yeah, you should go to that too. Follow @orenshbiro on Instagram or check out OrenIsFunny.com for more info about Oren’s upcoming shows. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is fine. There, now you don’t need to listen to the podcast. No wait. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie came out on Easter because it’s FULL of Easter Eggs, listen now to hear about all of them. You won’t believe #24! Seriously though, about halfway through the movie I was pretty exhausted from the way it was throwing Nintendo references in my face without barely any rhyme or reason. It was pretty watchable but with that talented of a voice cast I was really hoping for a little more room for them to shine. Ah well. So we shot humans into space and they got further away from the planet Earth than ever before. That’s pretty cool right? Well, there’s a few conspiracy theories kicking around that the Artemis 2’s heat shields aren’t up to snuff after some issues that were identified with Artemis 1. NASA says they figured it out and everything will be ok so I’m really hoping everything goes smoothly when they land on Friday. Jono watched The Grey Man on Netflix and it was less than the sum of its parts. The guy who wrote the books has knocked out 15 of them in the last 17 years, what do you mean they aren’t high quality examples of creativity? Over on Garbage Time we talk about some Super Nintendo Entertainment System trivia for a little while and then catch up on what Jon and Keith are playing in terms of good ole vidya. Noita and Cyberpunk 2077 respectively. If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated. GPYS 333: Steve Leckman (Programme Coyote)
The Montreal podcast Go Plug Yourself asks Steve Leckman from Programmes Coyote: You have to diffuse a bomb – do you choose to ask the audience, go 50/50 or phone a friend? That question was asked by Lucie Gee and Dan Carin promoting Le Mini Grand Yes And on our last episode. Steve Leckman is the Director of Programmes Coyote / Coyote Programs. Coyote Programs offer kids and teens the chance to get out in nature, have an adventure and take risks (while still supervised by skilled and knowledgeable grownup guides). They offer after school programs, daycamps, mentoring and getaway camping trips where kids experience screen free time in nature and foster creativity, resilience and to quote one of the kids “skills they might need in the zombie apocalypse.” If this sounds amazing (because it is), Coyote Programs is gearing up for their summer registration period. Reach out to Steve and team here. Steve joined Chris Venditto and I to talk about these programs, how important they are in 2026 to counter the rise of perpetual screen time and toxic masculinity and how kids are just so freaking ready to get outside and have an adventure. Early in the episode we talk about Steve’s uncanny ability to mimic animal gaits. Do yourself a favour and watch this video for the full demonstration of what we’re talking about. This is a little off the beaten path (ha ha!) for us but I promise it’s a good time, enjoy the show! 9ES359: Guest Stars
We only really talk about Sam Kieth’s passing towards the end of the episode but I think we should have probably talked about his work more off the top. I can’t really understate how hard The Maxx hit when I first stumbled upon it in the early 90s. I came to Sam Kieth’s work through the animated series but later when I dug into his comics (including his work on Sandman) I found myself pushed further and further down the path as an “indie comics” kid. Are Jim Mahood and Jhonen Vasquez two of my favorite artists if not for the work of Sam Kieth? Probably not. Jim Lee on Sam Kieth: “”Kieth, who was not just a big name coming off his sensational run on Marvel Comics Presents, but a friend who also loved talking about the psychological underpinnings of our favorite characters. My pitch to Sam back then was simple: come do whatever you want. Total creative freedom. Own it all. Take it wherever you want-or nowhere at all. And Sam ran with it and launched his creation ‘the Maxx’ through our anthology series Darker Image #1, promptly selling over a million copies.” We talk about plenty of other stuff too but I just wanted to give one of the greats his due. We talk about how often science fiction gets things wrong, a bunch of other celebrity deaths, the Firefly reboot, Buffy, the Arrowverse and how horror movies are getting their flowers at the Oscars. Just the usual stuff you’ve come to know and love about the 9to5 Entertainment System. Over on Garbage Time we immediately break our promise about Garbage Time being the more “fun” and “less depressing” of the two versions of the show. We talk about tuberculosis, cancer, people getting sick from scurvy and everyone’s favorite worm: the screw-worm. Are you not intrigued? We wrap things up by talking about the viral marketing for the new Faces of Death movie and then we wax philosophical about how there are just too many dang comics being published. If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated. GPYS 332: Lucie Gee & Daniel Carin (Le Mini Grand Yes And)
The Montreal arts and entertainment podcast Go Plug Yourself asks Lucie Gee and Daniel Carin (from Le Mini Grand Yes And Improv Festival): “Who was your first celebrity crush?” That question was asked by Jason Rockman & Ryan Stick back in episode 331. A few months ago we had Lucie Gee and Costa Tsimiklis on the show to talk about the debut edition of the burgeoning improv festival “Le Grand Yes And” – well guess what? They’re back at it with a new edition festival they’re calling “Le Mini Grand Yes And” – this springtime edition is focused more on producer-centric improv shows (the main edition will be focused more on improv troupes). We’ve brought back Lucie Gee and one of those producers (and friend of the show) Daniel Carin to talk about “Le Mini Grand Yes And” in general and Dan’s show “Improv By The Fireplace” which will be kicking off the festival. We talk about the Oscars, improv comedy’s standing in the comedy world, celebrity crushes and so much more, so sit back, enjoy the show and Go Plug Yourself. Tickets and information for Le Grand Yes And can be found on their official website and you can follow them on Instagram and Facebook as well. Dan’s show “Advice By The Fireplace” is going to be featured at the festival Friday March 27 at 6:30PM : Improv By The Fireplace but you can listen to the archive of episodes on Apple Podcasts and follow the show in Instagram as well. 9ES358: Sacred Lawns
If you haven’t heard of Nirvanna The Band The Show then you’re doing yourself a disservice. I’m actually pretty shocked that both Jon and Scott aren’t more familiar with it. Tracking down the Viceland episodes seems to be a bit of a trick these days but there is still a delightful fansite that has thoughtfully preserved the Nirvanna The Band webseries episodes for your enjoyment. If you have a chance to check out Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie in theaters I’m fairly sure you won’t be disappointed. However, it was produced by Crave so if you have that service I’m sure you’ll find it on streaming soon enough. While you’re at it you should probably check out The Dirties, Operation: Avalanche and BlackBerry too. Since everything is fine in the world we spend some time talking about how CEOs eat their hamburgers. If you haven’t seen the footage I think it’s somehow both more and less cringe than you think it is. On first watch I thought it wasn’t so bad, but then I watched it again and decided that the McDonald’s CEO might not even be an actual human being. We talk about other stuff too. What jobs are going to be stolen by artificial intelligence, UFC BMF Champion Charles Oliveira and his entire leg-sleeve Pokemon tattoo, the Masters of the Universe movie trailer and Scott’s dislike of medical dramas. Anyways, we spend this episode of Garbage Time talking about how much the sports writers for the Montreal Gazette kind of suck. That leads us towards the death of print media and how much we miss Vice Magazine. Not sure how we go from there to curling and ultra marathons but you know what? We do. If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated. GPYS 331: Jason Rockman & Ryan Stick
The Montreal arts & entertainment podcast that asks Jason Rockman & Ryan Stick: Which Montrealers do you respect the most and the least? That question asked by Carmina Berbari Daou & Raquel Maestre. Jason Rockman & Ryan Stick are two guys who seem to know a little bit about everything in pop-culture. Comic books, horror movies, wrestling, old school television, music and more. Sound familiar? Together they host The Rockman Power Hour which is at 147 episodes and counting featuring everyone from The Damn Truth to UFC fighter Rashad Evans to Todd McFarlane… oh I could go on. Do yourself a favour and check out The Rockman Power Hour wherever you get your podcasts (and it’s a video podcast on Youtube too!) Jason Rockman’s latest endeavour is Morning Gory Productions a new collaboration with a few other horror nerds in Montreal to bring retro cinema experiences to our city. They’re starting off with a bang tomorrow night, March 6th at Cinéma du Muséee with a double feature of both The Omen & The Exorcist. Get your tickets here. Jason mentions some of the merch that will be available tomorrow night and let me tell you, it’s awesome. Jason and Ryan joined Walter and I at the back of Grumpy’s to talk about the Buffalo Bills, music, fandoms and so much more, so sit back, relax and Go Plug Yourself. You can check out more of Ryan Stick’s work over at You, Me & YTV his love letter to a little Canadian television channel that introduced so many of us to so many cool things in the 90s and early 2000s. 9ES357: Goonsy
We talked about this a lot last episode: Scott and Keith really like the Winter Olympics. Jono? He didn’t even wake up to watch the Men’s Hockey Gold Medal game against the USA. I guess not only is he not a fan of sports he also hates his country. I’m not even sure Jon is Canadian at all – how much do we really know about this man we’ve recorded 357 podcasts with really? Anyways, the Canadian Men and Women’s Hockey teams failed us and lost to Team USA in overtime in both games. That sucked. Then Kash Patel was somehow let into Team USA Men’s locker room after the game and that sucked even more. We go over our favorite moments of this edition of the Winter Olympics that are mostly just the best memes honestly. Also – if you read the blog post for episode 356 you’ll remember that I was hyped about Ski Mountaineering. Well it didn’t disappoint. We wrap things up with finally getting Sinners onto “The List” and for some reason Scott made himself watch “Kraven the Hunter” while Jono made the much more reasonable decision to watch “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”. Anyways, we spend this episode of Garbage Time we talk about all 6 episodes of “Heated Rivalry” which naturally leads us into trying to figure out how to put “Shoresy” and “Heated Rivalry” into a shared universe. Scott’s kid is playing Hollow Knight, Brady Tkachuk looks like Sloth from “The Goonies” and Scott gives some updates about voice work on the X-Men Audio Drama. GPYS 330: Carmina Berbari Daou & Raquel Maestre
The Montreal arts & entertainment podcast that asks Carmina Berbari Daou & Raquel Maestre of the Montreal Indie Comedy Collective: “If you could party on any planet, real or fictional, what would it be?” Then we ask: “Ass or titties?” (thanks for that Shosho). Those questions came to us from Serag and Shosho back in our last episode (hot top: you can still buy tickets for their show on February 28th). Welcome to a brand new episode of the Go Plug Yourself Podcast – this week we welcome Carmina Barbari Daou and Raquel Maestre from the Montreal Indie Comedy Collective to talk about all of the joys of producing comedy shows in Montreal, how they got started, how they work together and so much more. They host monthlies like Thursday Stand-Up? Cool! and Queer Laughs and they are also producing a bunch of other shows too! Sarah jumps on for this episode and honestly we don’t talk enough about the fact that Carmina found a perfect used copy of Travel Scrabble. For a minute there was a very real chance this podcast was just going to be the four of us playing Scrabble. Do yourself a favour and check out their LinkTree, Instagram and Facebook pages to stay up to date on everything they’ve got coming up! 9ES356: Ice Level Angle
Scott and Keith really like the Winter Olympics. Jono? I guess he’s probably meh on them and sports in general. Maybe that’s why Jon has maybe like 5 minutes of talk time in an episode that is almost entirely devoted to the main sporting events of the last week (being of course the SuperBowl, the Winter Olympics and Kid Rock popping up out of a stage like a muppet in a fur coat only to lip synch his way through “Bawitaba”). The Winter Olympics have always been more compelling to me than the Summer edition. Is it because we have snow and ice in Canada and that’s the main ingredient of basically every sport at the Winter Olympics? Maybe. But also it’s because the sports themselves are just so much more hard core. Take a look at the winter biathlon. It’s a cross country ski race where you have to randomly stop and shoot targets with a rifle. Why did they randomly inject shooting a gun into a race? Let’s take a look at the debuting sports in the last Summer and Winter Olympics, shall we? Paris 2024 decided to show the world “breakdancing”. Neat. Making its debut in Italy this week? “Ski Mountaineering” That’s right, a sport about skiing and climbing uphill before racing back down it. See what I’m saying? HARDCORE. Also, Keith mistakenly stated that there were no new cards coming out in Hearthstone and boy was he wrong. Cards apparently rotate out of the game after 2 years and new packs of 100+ cards rotate in 3 times a year. There are about 1500 cards at any given point in “Standard” format and the 4500 other cards that have rotated out are all still available to play in “Wild” format. Wowowow. Anyways, we spend this episode of Garbage Time talking about the films of Christopher Guest, The Rip on Netflix and Keith’s first thoughts on Cyberpunk 2077. Scott also marathoned all of Delicious in Dungeon. I know Scott says the trailer doesn’t do the show justice, but I just watched it and it seems to be exactly what he described. And I’m still not interested in watching it at all. Scott also watched Sinners but we’ll hold off on ranking it until we talk about it in the main episode. Hopefully we remember in 2 weeks. If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated. GPYS 329: Shosho Abotouk & Serag Meletian
The Montreal arts & entertainment podcast that asks comedians Shosho Abotouk & Serag Meletian: “What’s your favorite breakfast cereal both now and as a kid?” That question asked, as always, by our previous guest Nazeer Khan. You may remember that we had Shosho on the show a few months ago to talk about the runaway success story of merging comedy with crochet. Well, she’s at it again and this time she’s got our own Walter J. Lyng and longtime friend of the show Serag Meletian bringing the laughs as The Crochet & Comedy show takes over historic Café Cleopatra for The Yarn Ball on February 28th. There will even be prizes! Things go off the rails as they so often do and we end up talking with Shosho and Serag about Devon Sawa, telegrams, payphones and Bad Bunny. What else did you expect? We’re back at Grumpy’s for this one and fully embody the spirit of the chaotic safespace that is this wacky little podcast. Remember to subscribe and tell your friends on Tiktok and Instagram or whatever it is you kids do these days when you like something. Oh yeah – Chris Venditto shows up at the end of the show too! 9ES355: Those Guys
So about halfway through the recording of this podcast you will hear Scott exclaim “Fuck that guy!” and it will be revealed that he is talking about Matt Damon. To peel back the curtain a little about our recording process we usually take a little water break around the 30 minute mark. It lets us make sure everything is going well with the recording, refill water glasses, go to the bathroom, etc. Sometimes we have a little chit chat that isn’t necessarily relevant to the podcast then we reset, hit record and get on with the show. Scott hates Matt Damon so much that he could not contain himself during this little break. Well, Matt Damon was in the news recently talking about how Netflix wants filmmakers to constantly recap the plot of their movies since they assume people are only paying half attention. That’s pretty good podcast talk so we decide to jump into it as our next topic. I say, “I’ll hit record and you tee this one up Scott” and he proceeded to tee it up by saying “Fuck that guy!” So that’s why we end up with a silky smooth transition like “Oh I want to see Marty Supreme” directly into “Fuck that guy!” It kind of sounds like Scott hates Marty Supreme but no, he hates Matt Damon. Anyways, two of us have watched Bugonia so we talk about that a little and put it on The List. Some other stuff happens too. We once again spend most of this episode of Garbage Time talking about Keith’s experience with the endgame of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. We get deep into spoilers of the twists and endings of the game so listener discretion is advised if you’re planning on playing it (and you should be). We also share some stories of public transportation and talk about Kanye’s apology letter. GPYS 328: Nazeer Khan
The Montreal arts & entertainment podcast Go Plug Yourself asks comedian and producer Nazeer Khan: What new grocery store item are you most excited about? That question asked in our previous episode by Dr. Tyler Lemco. It took a little bit of coordination (which is also why we’re a day late in posting this episode) but we finally managed to get Nazeer Khan on the show. If you don’t know, Nazeer Khan is one of Montreal’s finest comedy producers and is producing shows all over the Greater Montreal area. From the West Island, to Downtown, to the Plateau (allegedly) and all the way up to Deux Montagnes. Want to know more? Of course you do. If you’re in the West Island, do yourself a favour and follow the West Island Comedy Night (@westislandcomedynight on Instagram) and for the rest of the city check out Comedy Cave MTL (@comedycavemtl on Instagram). Nazeer Khan joins Walter J. Lyng and I to talk about mixed-martial arts and comedy and then Zak Kik shows up for the back half of the show and we end up talking a LOT about cereal. Would you expect anything less of Go Plug Yourself? Of course not. Enjoy the show! 9ES354: The Jig Is Up
We know that we occasionally get a little into politics news on 9ES but we also recognize that can be a huge bummer. So instead we talk about Predator: Badlands. It’s not that we don’t care about what’s going on in the world, we just care a lot more about what happens when a Yautja and a Weyland-Yutani team up on a murder planet. Honestly, Predator: Badlands might be the “weakest” of the three Predator projects helmed to date by Dan Trachtenberg. I use quotations there because while it’s not as good as Prey or Killer of Killers it’s probably the most fun a Predator movie has been since the original. Is it fan service to see a Yautja go toe-to-toe with absurd deadly monsters and synths for 100 minutes? Sure. But it’s fan service done right. The fact that it kind of ties in with Alien: Earth really seems like they’re building a pathway to an Alien vs Predator movie that isn’t complete shit and that’s way more exciting than global politics. We even manage to talk about One Battle After Another without getting too bummed out. But then Scott watched Tron: Ares and Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins and that pretty much bummed us all out. We spend most of this episode of Garbage Time talking about Keith’s experience so far playing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. You might not believe this but it’s actually pretty good. Somehow the most awarded video game in the history of The Game Awards really stands out as a good video game. But this is 9ES so Keith manages to nitpick it anyways. You know what was a perfect game though? Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. The game that we vaguely mention about being an RPG that you play on console via your phone is (I think) Sunderfolk. If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated. Tyler Lemco Returns! Dr Lemco’s Creative Club – GPYS 327
The Montreal arts & entertainment podcast Go Plug Yourself welcomes back Tyler Lemco and asks the question: “Who in your life do you think is most likely a time traveler?” That question asked as always be our good friend Sarah Warren back in episode 326. If you remember back in July we had Tyler Lemco on the show talking about Dr Lemco’s Creative Club where Tyler was hosting creative art parties all over the city, one of the things he mentioned was that it was his dream to have his own space to host these events. A Creative Clubhouse so to speak. Well guess what? He did it! Located at 5271 de Maisonneuve just steps away from Vendome metro Dr Lemco’s Creative Club is now a real place that you can go to with your friends and make cool art. He’ll be hosting theme nights, watch parties, trivia nights and more and you can book the space for your own private art parties too. For more information check out www.drlem.co to find out more. Troy, Walter and I headed over to check out the new space and talk art, comedy and more. What do you got to lose? Dr. Lemco’s Creative Club is located at 5271 de Maisonneuve, full calendar of events and tickets here. Enjoy the show! Credit Where Credit is Due As always, a big thank you to the providers of our theme song: Leighland Beckman and Aural Turpitude! The post Tyler Lemco Returns! 9ES 353: An Audio Portrait of 2025
As we do most years we are taking advantage of the final episode of the year to take a look back at the year that was. 2025 was, as years go, “a bit of a year” for most of us. As we all firmly enter our mid-40’s I am pretty sure full calendar years of whimsy and fun are things of the past. At least until we start experimenting with whatever drugs they will be giving old people in the year 2060. To begin with, let’s just toot our own horn a little bit, shall we? Between this show, Go Plug Yourself and all the festival shows we do in a year we ran up about 30,000 downloads in 2025. I know it’s a drop in the bucket in the big podcasting game but even that modest number is big enough to make me smile a little. Thank you rare listener who reads the show notes, we do it for you. So after making a little room for our personal 2025s we dive into some of the headlines from the world of sports and politics. The politics talk bums us out so then we talk about more fun things like movies, TV shows and video games. Those were a lot more fun. We keep the general theme of “year in review” going over on Garbage Time. Scott and Keith talk about some of the albums and concerts they enjoyed in 2025 and then turn their gaze to the future to figure out what movies and shows might pique their interest in 2026. If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated. GPYS Holiday Sh*t Show!
You know what the Go Plug Yourself gang got you for the holidays? A podcast a day early! Our generosity knows no bounds! It’s time for our most chaotic episode of the year! It’s the Go Plug Yourself shit show featuring too many people to mention but I’m going to try anyways – starting with my amazing co-hosts Walter J. Lyng, Lawrence Corber, Troy Stark, my wife Sarah and Chris Venditto, Go Plug Yourself regulars like Vance Michel, The Green Phantom, Mike Carrozza some cameos by Zak Kik, Shosho Abatouk, Harvey the Dog, some guy named Colin or Connor and I’m pretty sure Hasher was there for a second too. It’s a mess you guys. Enjoy the show! The audio quality is always a little all over the place with these bad boys and this year is no exception, I tried to level it off a little (our tendency to yell loudly when anyone showed up was particularly brutal on the ear drums) but it is what it is they say. So load this episode up and put it on a speaker so the whole house feels like a party where you’re not allowed to talk. In fairness, nobody is really “allowed” to talk when we’re all together like this. It’s just about being the loudest person in any given moment. Enjoy the show! Credit Where Credit is Due As always, a big thank you to the providers of our theme song: Leighland Beckman and Aural Turpitude! Inés Anaya never stops finding ways to be funny: writing for Hindwing Press and The Beaverton, running shows like Stand Up Story Slam and getting on the mic at comedy shows all over the city when it is legally possible to do so. The best way to keep track of what she’s up to next is on Instagram @clout__atlas Lawrence Corber also produces some shows you may have heard of (you should probably check out the next Healthy Living show when you get a chance) and if you’re close with him you can call him Lully. The other way to call him “Lully” is to follow him on his socials. @Lully514 on Instagram. Walter J. Lyng is a stand-up comedian based out of Montreal, you should follow him on Twitter @wallygoodtimes and on Facebook: Walter J. Lyng Sarah is somehow still @femalewalter on Instagram. Follow her for pictures of our dogs and sometimes she remembers to post about all the arts and entertainment we take in all year long. 9ES352: Mole Man Really
We missed out on ranking Wake Up Dead Man on this one but I guess that’s fine because it gives Keith another few weeks to watch it and then all three of us can chime in on Rian Johnson’s latest Knives Out mystery. I do love that Rian Johnson committed to making three full feature length films in the style of a modern Agatha Christie character where many filmmakers would just remake Murder On The Nile or whatever. It’s nice that someone is writing new things, ya know? Even though he has no plans for a fourth Knives Out at the moment I have faith that we haven’t seen the last of Benoit Blanc. Why? Who knows where faith comes from Joe. For your viewing pleasure I found the exact reel that Scott was talking about from the Instagram account “yojoe_collectibles” and believe me when I say it’s breathtaking. We wrap things up talking about the incredible and varied career of both Rob Reiner and John Cena’s final match on Saturday against Gunther. As we often do on Garbage Time we keep the wrestling chat behind our very affordable paywall. As we briefly speak about on the main show John Cena retired over the weekend so Scott and Keith break down whether or not John Cena is the wrestling G.O.A.T. or if he even manages to make it on to the Mount Rushmore of professional wrestling (or sports entertainment if you think those are two different things). We also talk about some Golden Globe nominations and Keith has been watching Fiona & Cake, If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated. GPYS 326: Sarah Warren Returns!
The Montreal arts & entertainment podcast that asks comedian Sarah Warren: “Which love song do you wish was written about you?” That question was asked a few episodes ago by the wonderful Lou Laurence who was promoting her debut album “Montréal Romantic.” Listen, we know that we had Sarah Warren on the show already this year to promote her show “My Dead Mom’s Cookbook” but you might remember that on that very show she mentioned she was (at the time) taking a break from standup comedy. Well guess what? She’s back! Next Thursday, December 18th at the historic Café Cleopatra Sarah Warren will be taking to the stage to headline an all-star lineup of local talent. “Sarah Warren & Friends” will be the perfect way to kick off your holiday revelry in earnest. I promise. In the meantime, do yourself a favour and catch all of Sarah’s content (yes, often about her dead mom) at sarahisfamous on Instagram. Sarah joined Walter, Troy and I at the back of Grumpy’s to talk about sex toy sponsorship, John Cena’s last match and Reddit. Probably some other stuff too. You’ll have to listen to find out. 9ES351: Wide Appeal
Really the only thing that stops us from being just like Jesse Plemons in Begonia is that none of us are beekeepers. Waitaminute- Jon is a beekeeper. I guess it’s time for us to kidnap a CEO. This podcast is about to really take a turn. Hit us up in the comments if you’re a CEO who would like to be kidnapped by the three of us. Anyways, it’s hard to get out to the movies these days and by hard I mean really fucking expensive. Factor in a baby-sitter and you’re looking at dropping $200 on a Friday night at the movies with a food-court dinner. I wonder if high-school kids still go to the movies for dates or if they’re totally priced out of that too. We talk about a few other pretty recent flicks like Caught Stealing and Asteroid City and then Scott talks about a film that is definitely not that recent: The Long Goodbye. Then we talk about The Pink Panther and how it might be one of the greatest theme songs of all time. Stay tuned for some future episode of 9ES where we rank the greatest theme songs of all time… probably. Meanwhile on a brand new episode of Garbage Time we talk about some of the dumbest matches in pro-wrestling history including the infamous “Kennel Match” where a bunch of scared dogs just peed and pooped all over the place. I guess talking about things really going to shit leads us to (of course) talk about the Toronto Maple Leafs. There’s a connection there I just know it. If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated. Go Plug Yourself 325: “Sports!”
The Montreal arts & entertainment podcast takes a break from our usual programming and invites Scott MacIver (from our other show 9ES) to talk about sports! We’re a Montreal sports show now! I’ll be totally up front though, about 95% of the sports talk is hockey centric. Scott and Chris talk a little about football and baseball towards the end there but we love in Montreal and this is a hockey town so this is kind of a hockey podcast. Deal with it! The three of us break down the first 25% of the season for our beloved Montreal Canadiens who are quickly becoming one of the most exciting iterations of this team that we’ve had in recent memory. We also spend a good chunk of time celebrating the woes of the Toronto Maple Leafs. We all knew the wheels were going to come off but so far it’s been even more dramatic than even my wildest predictions. We talk about Team Canada, which Habs might make the cut for not only Team Canada but who else will be heading to Milan for their respective countries and Scott pretty much fixes the All-Star game. We close things off talking about the Milwaukee Brewers and Chris proclaims the MLB playoffs and World Series to be the most entertaining post-season in sports. Sports! 9ES350: Small Fries
So the Trump administration has reversed their decision on not releasing the Epstein Files despite the possibility of a photo of… checks notes… “Trump blowing Bubba.” I can’t really be excited by any of this since I’m pretty sure if they’re releasing the files they’ve already scorched any ties that the orange man might have had with the pervert anyways. I guess we shall see. So Paul McCartney joined a bunch of other British artists to release an anti-AI album and it’s one part protest and one part tricking and misleading the algorithm. The fact that they are apparently also releasing the album on vinyl is somewhere between hilarious and insane. Anyhow, Keith played all the way through 2022’s “Stray” and Jon watched Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein. Those are two things that happened so we talk about them. Finally, Dave Mustaine from Megadeth wants Megadeth’s last show to be actually in space and I really want that to happen. That is all. Meanwhile on a brand new episode of Garbage Time we talk about the phenomenon aphantasia and discuss how Jon most likely actually has it. That’s right, it’s a 30 minute conversation that is mostly about how the three of us process information and remember things. I don’t know if this is peak garbage content or possibly the best Garbage Time we’ve ever recorded. We read a bunch of quotes from this article on CTV that references a lot of the actual studies on the topic. If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated. Lou Laurence – GPYS 324
The Montreal arts & entertainment podcast that asks singer-songwriter Lou Laurence: “What makes baseball so romantic?” That question asked by Pascal Girard back in our last episode. Lou Laurence is an incredibly talented (and funny) performer who you may even recognize from her last appearance on this podcast promoting her Fringe Show “Love, Sharks & Frenching“. Well she’s just released her first album “Montréal Romantic” and you can listen to it pretty much everywhere you stream music. You can even buy the album digitally on Bandcamp if you’re a really good person. Lou Laurence joined Troy Stark and I at the back of Grumpy’s to talk about producing her first album, how thin the wall is between her and her neighbour and generally all the ups and downs of living and loving in the wonderful city of Montreal. Sudden snow storms, transit strikes and all. Troy Stark also steps up as full co-host for this one because Walter “flaked” on the episode in a move that I’m sure was not prompted by the metro strike. Thank you Troy! Oh hey, there’s never been a better time to tell someone about Go Plug Yourself than right now – we’re proud that Go Plug Yourself was selected to be part of Acast’s Indie Amplifier selections for November – check us out on Amazon Music Canada. 9ES 349: Fred Savage & Harvey Keitel
Two out of three of us are dads here on 9ES. When is it ok to show Zach Cregger’s Weapons to your kid? 12? 13 years old? When is it ok to show Thanatomorphose to your kid? Probably never? Weapons was pretty great and I can’t wait for Jono to watch Barbarian so we can dutifully compare and contrast. If Zach Cregger was a recording artist, Weapons would be an excellent second album. Which we know from many, many subpar sophomore albums is still quite the accomplishment. Barbarian is still the original though, the first break out into the world of horror film making and I think Weapons may suffer slightly from having too many echoes of Barbarian to truly break out and stand on its own. Still definitely worth the watch though, don’t get me wrong. As you do towards the end of October we watched a bunch of other horror movies. Scott showed Prince of Darkness to his kid which is exciting, while I watched Oddity, Wolf Man and started into Welcome to Derry. Tis the season after all. Finally we wonder out loud if Stephen King is the most recognizable author on the planet. We will return to (slightly) less horror-centric content next episode probably. Maybe. Meanwhile on a brand new episode of Garbage Time we talk about Stephen King some more while we talk about Edgar Wright’s upcoming take on The Running Man. Keith has made it to The Trial of Magneto as he plows through Marvel’s Krakoan Age and that leads us to talk about the X-Men. If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated. Pascal Girard (Pastimes) – GPYS 323
The Montreal arts & entertainment podcast that asks comic book artist Pascal Girard: “What’s your positive vision for the future?” That question was asked in our last episode by Annie and Scout from CULT PLAY. Chris Venditto and I were excited to host cartoonist Pascal Girard on this week’s episode of Go Plug Yourself. Pow Pow is bringing the English translation of Pascal Girard’s latest book “Pastimes” next week. From Pow Pow: “From encounters with would-be swingers at the dog park to ferocious felines at the local cat cafe, in these short, snappy comic strips Pascal Girard delivers snippets inspired by his daily life, with a bittersweet humour that’s sometimes mocking, sometimes tender, but always deeply observant. Pastimes is a funny and surprisingly moving portrait of passing time in the modern world, one comic at a time.” We talk about being obsessed with death, what it’s like to let a translator become your voice, surfing and the Blue Jays making us cry. If you’re in the area you can check out the official launch party at Librairie D&Q on November 7th and Pascal Girard and other Pow Pow artists will be at the Read Quebec book fair on December 6th and 7th at Casa d’Italia. 9ES348: Close To The Vest
Tron is a weird franchise and Tron: Ares just continues the weirdness. From what I’ve read, none of the three movies were considered hits for Disney. But somehow three of them have been made and they made a really expensive roller coaster to celebrate the franchise in Disneyworld. Hard to figure out the actual numbers but allegedly it was in the same price range as the Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind ride and that cost $500 million USD. That’s a lot of money for Tron. So, Tron: Ares. OG Tron: Budget $17 million Box office $50 million[1] Tron: Legacy: Budget $170 million[5][6] Box office $409.9 million[6] Tron: Ares Deadline Hollywood reported a total cost of $347.5 million, including production and advertising, for the film and estimated that it ultimately should lose over $132 million. Whoopsie! Meanwhile, you know what else involved a lot of money? The Riyadh Comedy Festival. We didn’t have the Marc Maron quote on the show, but here it is in all its glory: “I mean, how do you even promote that? “From the folks that brought you 9/11. Two weeks of laughter in the desert, don’t miss it!” I mean, the same guy that’s gonna pay them is the same guy that paid that guy to bone-saw Jamal Khashoggi and put him in a fucking suitcase. But don’t let that stop the yuks, it’s gonna be a good time!” You’re a legend Mr. Maron. Meanwhile on a brand new episode of Garbage Time you won’t believe it but Jon and Keith talk more about Silksong! For the last time! Both of them are sitting at 100% game completion so they finally get it all out of their system… until the inevitable DLC is released. Keith also went to the Pounding the Pavement exhibit on now at the McCord Museum in Montreal (until October 26 so you’re probably already too late) and Scott wrestled a coyote. CULT PLAY w/ Scout Rexe & Annie Valentina – GPYS 322
The Montreal podcast that asks playwright Scout Rexe and director Annie Valentina from CULT PLAY: What is the biggest hurdle in your creative process? That question asked back in episode 321 by Lucie Gee and Costs Tsimiklis from Le Grand Yes And festival. CULT PLAY from Imago Theatre is having its world premiere at the Segal Center next week (tickets and showtimes here) and honestly it sounds like an incredible production. Playwright Scout Rexe (or Sax as their friends call them) got sucked into cult documentaries during the pandemic and began to wonder what it would take for them to be sucked into a cult. That thought process lead to the creation of CULT PLAY which Annie Valentina brings to life on stage. From Imago Theatre: Alex meets a captivating woman who is everything she’s ever wanted. Taylor opens the door to a thrilling new world… but what if it’s all a trap? Cult Play immerses the audience in Alex’s journey and the seductive power of belonging. In revealing her dark archive, Alex invites you to step into a thought experiment that questions the boundaries between voyeur and participant. Queer, enticingly playful and unapologetically bold, Cult Play is a multimedia solo show that explores the complex interplay of desire and deception, complicity and choice. Annie and Scout joined Chris Venditto at the back of Grumpy’s to talk about CULT PLAY, politics and the importance of queer voices in art and so much more. So sit back, relax and enjoy the show. 9ES347: FIRE MOVIE BURN
Credit where credit is due: We did not cook up the “firewatch challenge” but rather Scott listened to them do it over on the Confused Breakfast podcast and thought it was a good idea. And guess what, it was! I went into the exercise thinking I might make a few bold choices here and there but at the end the day I think we all more or less decided to stick to comfort food. Movies we’ve watched over and over again already and safe bets to keep our mental sanity in check for 12 months of relative isolation. It probably won’t surprise you that a number of films on The List feature pretty prominently although there are some glaring absences. Also, if you listened to last episode’s Garbage Time you’ll remember that 1999 might be the best year ever in cinema and that holds true here as well. To remind you, here are the rules for our take on the “Firewatch Challenge”: We each have been assigned to an isolated fire tower in Northern Quebec. We can “rent” one movie a month and it will be the only thing we can watch on our crummy little televisions. If we try to rent the same movie as one of the other hosts the other hosts will sub in a movie they deem to be close enough. There are no special features on any of the movies. We have access to a “little bit” of weed if we want it, but only really in the summer months. Wrestling Pay-Per-Views are allowed. Meanwhile on a brand new episode of Garbage Time you won’t believe it but Jon and Keith talk more about Silksong. Keith took a bit of a break and Jon is definitely right at the end game. We also take a look at the White Wolf 5th Edition Humble Bundle deal that’s going on right now. GPYS Rewind: Mick Foley (2012)
Interviewing Mick Foley back in 2012 was crazy. We had been doing this show for less than a year at the time and the circumstances of sitting down with the Hardcore Legend at 3:00 in the morning still blow my mind. But we did it. The fact that in the ensuing 13 years Walter would go on to hang out with Mick Foley multiple times, including opening for him a few years back at the Montreal Comiccon is extra crazy. We’ve gone from a few hundred (if we were lucky) downloads a month to several thousand. We’ve grown as a show and having amazing guests like Mick Foley definitely helped put us on the map. I don’t think I’ll ever get over being allowed to just set up a computer at a Just for Laughs party and record with whoever wanted to chat. The other crazy thing is that at the time of recording Walter and I were both still in our 20s and Mick was in his 40s. Time flies. Anyways, the more things change, the more things stay the same. Mick Foley is back in Montreal returning to the historic Café Cleopatra TOMORROW NIGHT October 2nd. As of recording this episode there are still some tickets available so get them now! Multiple tiers of tickets available now at Eventbrite. Enjoy this blast from the past! PS: That lovely illustration of Mick is from 2013 when Sophie got to meet Mick Foley and had uh… dreams about him. 9ES346: A Big Stand
I guess we’ll never know whether or not Disney suspended Jimmy Kimmel just to make some noise and piss people off or something but boy is it a wild time for free speech. You know you’re getting pretty crazy when Joe Rogan looks at what you’re doing and is like “yeah – this is a little crazy.” Ted Cruz and Joe Rogan being voices of reason is a pretty clear sign you’ve done something pretty messed up. Anyways, free speech reigns forever on the 9to5 Entertainment System! They will never silence our right to… umm.. Talk about the Spiderman movie from 25 years ago? Never I say! Jono watched the James Gunn Superman flick and I think we will only probably talk about it once more after Scott watches it. I still don’t understand how Scott hasn’t watched Peacemaker yet, but that’s another story. We also finish up setting the rules for the “Firewatch Challenge” and I’m going to type them out here: We each have been assigned to an isolated fire tower in Northern Quebec. Meanwhile on a brand new episode of Garbage Time Jon and Keith talk about Silksong some more because it’s really the only video game that matters anymore. Keith watched a documentary about Devo on Netflix and Scott watched a documentary about how 1982 was one of the best years in cinema history. We quickly decide that 1999 was even better. If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated. Le Grand Yes And – GPYS 321
The Montreal arts & entertainment podcast that asks two of the founders of the new improv festival in Montreal “Le Grand Yes And!” Lucie Gee and Costa Tsimiklis: “What would your last meal on earth be?” That question was asked by Julie Santini back in episode 320. Le Grand Yes And! is the latest festival in a city famed for its festivals. Festival organizers Lucie Gee & Costa Tsimiklis (along with Victor Neves Borges) have decided that not only does Montreal deserve an improv festival, it deserves to have a bilingual improv festival. Le Grand Yes And will feature 15 shows and 10 workshops for lovers of improv comedy at all levels. There’s even a few shows that feature our old pal Mariana Vial! Lucie and Costa joined Sarah and I at the back of Grumpy’s to talk about Le Grand Yes And, what prompted them to get on stage and of course because this is a show hosted by me: Hollow Knight: Silksong. It’s a good game, ok? So sit back, relax and get ready to say “yes, and” to a brand new Montreal festival. Le Grand Yes And! runs from September 24 to the 28th, shows take place at Theatre La Comédie de Montréal and workshops take place at 1454 rue de Atateken. 9ES345: Not Positive In The End
Jon and Keith played the heck out the original Hollow Knight when it came out and even if they haven’t been full blown participants of the Silksong hype they both were excited enough to get Silksong on launch day. It’s great. If you’re bad at it then get good and you shall be rewarded. This is a pretty “tight” episode by our standards. We talk about the biggest video game release of the year (Silksong), a movie that is still in theaters (Fantastic Four: First Steps), another relatively recent film (The Phoenecian Scheme) and a movie that is about to get released this week (The Long Walk). We also talk about some up to the minute politics and Trump’s creepy ass letter to Epstein in the infamous “Birthday Book”. Sometimes we talk about the 80s and sometimes we talk about stuff happening right now. What do you want from us? Oh and by the way, we don’t talk about it on the show but if you listened to last episode and wondered how Syko Stu is doing, apparently he’s been released from the hospital and is miraculously expected to recover. Fucking wild. Meanwhile on a brand new episode of Garbage Time Keith has watched the entirety of Twisted Metal Season 2 and it was pretty great in a silly popcorn kind of way. The boys discuss the rules of the “Firewatch Movie Challenge” that will be featured on an upcoming episode of 9ES and Scott started watching Alien: Earth. Hot fresh garbage! If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated. GPYS 320: Julie Santini
Welcome to a brand new episode of Go Plug Yourself! Montreal’s best podcast if you ask me. On this week’s episode Lawrence Corber and I are joined by actor, comedian, improviser and all around rule follower Julie Santini. We asked her Pat Guay’s question from a few episodes ago: What annoys you most in your day-to-day life? Julie Santini is one of Montreal’s exciting up and coming multidisciplinary talents. Having acted and improvised before she’s recently taken to the stage alone as a stand up comedy and is currently honing her craft all over town. As always the Go Plug Yourself podcast is there to sit down and get to know the people that make this city an amazing place for artists (despite the best efforts of politicians or whatever, don’t get me started). We talk about getting into comedy, Christmas pinatas and narrowly avoid a full length recital of the 1996 film Matilda. You can follow Julie on most social media @juliersantini and check her out almost every other Tuesday at Straight Shooters comedy night at Tequila Bar in Saint Henri. Enjoy the show – Go Plug Yourself! Credit Where Credit is Due As always, a big thank you to the providers of our theme song: Leighland Beckman and Aural Turpitude! 9ES 344: Watch With Anticipation
Note: This episode is a little (a lot) late because of some unexpected technical hiccups! Whoops! So Rampage Jackson’s son Raja Jackson jumped into a wrestling ring and slammed Syko Stu into the ground and then delivered 23 unprotected headshots to his unconscious body. Oh and he streamed the whole thing live because it’s 2025. It’s wild to me that there are wrestlers defending Raja Jackson here but I’m not surprised. Wrestlers are fucking weird. I guess it’s kind of nice that Rampage Jackson has come around to the fact that his son is a piece of shit? “”I feel bad about what happened to Syko Stu,” Jackson remarked. “I don’t condone what my son did at all. . . . I’m a father, so I gotta have my son’s back, but I’m gonna let justice play out — take its course. . . . I hope one day I can meet Syko Stu and shake his hand and have a man-to-man with him. “. . . I hope Syko Stu can forgive me, as a dad, for not understanding everything. Let’s see what happens from here.” While we talk about this, Jon briefly unpacks the streaming platform “Kick” which honestly the more I learn about the more I hate. The French streamer that Jon talks about died only a few days before the Raja Jackson incident. Even though that’s just a Wikipedia link you may not want to go down that clickhole. Gnarly stuff. Anyways, it’s not all doom and gloom. We also talk about the Expulsion of the Acadians by the British Army in 1755. Wait, that’s still doom and gloom isn’t it? Whatever man, Jono walked on the edge of the CN Tower and Silksong is finally coming out. See? Good things DO happen. Meanwhile on a brand new episode of Garbage Time Scott talks about introducing his son to horror films. He showed the kiddo Alien and Aliens which lead (naturally) into a full re-watch of Stranger Things. We then wonder if the final season will be any good and Scott thinks the internet has turned on Millie Bobby Brown. Whatever, Keith pre-ordered that Hellfire D&D module since he thinks it will be cool to sit on his shelf. Don’t tell Sarah. If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated. Go Plug Yourself Rewind: Mike Bailey!
It’s a Time Adventure with Mike Bailey! Back in 2016 we were lucky enough to sit down with (then) up and coming indie wrestler Speedball Mike Bailey, back in town after some successful runs in PWG and AAA. Mike was about to be defending his IWS World Title against former WWE Heavyweight Champion Rey Mysterio Jr. at Metropolis. Now they’re a regular on AEW! They challenged the Hurt Syndicate at All-In Texas for the AEW World Tag Team Titles in front of like 30,000 people. That’s crazy man, crazy. Fair warning, the audio levels are a little off-balanced for the first few minutes, but it normalizes pretty quickl Anyhow, enjoy this trip down memory lane, I’m on vacation this week. We’ll be back with a brand new guest in two weeks time. Until then sit back, relax and Go Plug Yourself. 9ES 343: Other Realities IN The Reality
The Montreal podcast that deep dives into very particular eras of X-Men comics has returned with your bi-weekly dose of nerdy ass shenanigans. We kicked off with my festival marathon: Osheaga and ÎleSoniq back-to-back, five days of crowds, dancing, and metro hell. Pro tip: alternate shoes and insoles, or your feet will revolt after 100k steps (dancing not included). No Jono around means there’s nobody to stop Scott and I from talking a LOT about comics. We geeked out on X-Men tropes, mutant madness, and the Krakoa era: resurrection drama, timey-wimey futures and that bonkers “X of Swords” tournament scattering across titles. Weirdly Scott decides to ship Jean Grey and Steve Rogers and I don’t hate it. Scott also starts fancasting Excalibur mostly from the Ted Lasso cast: Phil Dunster as Captain Britain, Juno Temple as Meggan and Heather Waddingham as Saturnyne. I told you this was a nerdy one. Meanwhile: ChatGPT-5 dropped unannounced, killing old models and your “clanker” buddies. It’s drier, sloppier, sacrifices accuracy for speed—devastating if you’re using it for therapy, RPGs, or brainstorming like Scott. Finally, presumably out of fear that we were going to make him watch it for a “Best Movie Ever” – Scott watched Amazon’s “War of the Worlds”—Ice Cube as a solo analyst fighting data-eating aliens via socials and drones. Is it as bad as the internet says? Yes and no. Meanwhile over on Garbage Time, Scott and I dig into some of the worst powers in Marvel comics sticking with our comic book theme. I genuinely feel like we might have done this before but I don’t remember some of the characters were spoke about so maybe it was a different list? Who knows, man? 9to5.cc Goes to Fantasia 2025: The School Duel, $POSITIONS & All You Need Is Kill
Our Fantasia International Film Festival podcast continues talking about films The School Duel, $POSITIONS and All You Need Is Kill Grab your coffee and settle in for our latest Fantasia pod, where Sarah and Keith dish on three wild Fantasia flicks over a morning brew. Let’s dive into the chaos. All You Need Is Kill, a vibrant anime adaptation of the light novel that inspired Edge of Tomorrow, flips the script by focusing on Rita this time around. Its fluid, music video-esque animation dazzles, though the third act drags (a little) with over-explained science. A must-watch for anime fans, it’s a breezy 82 minutes but might not hook non-anime geeks due to some quirky anime tropes. $POSITIONS is a cringe-inducing, anxiety-fueled ride through middle-America’s underbelly. Following crypto-obsessed Mike, it’s a “torture porn” portrait of bad decisions, addiction, and Midwestern struggles. Michael Kunicki’s performance as the calm-yet-doomed protagonist balances humor and heartbreak, making it a brutal, engaging watch for fans of Silicon Valley or Euphoria’s darker vibes. The School Duel, set in a dystopian Florida, is a gut-punch dark comedy where kids identified as potential school shooters are pitted in a patriotic “duel” for military ranks and family cash. Shot in stark black-and-white, it tempers its violence while delivering a scathing critique of American extremism. Kue Lawrence’s haunting performance as a misguided teen steals the show, appealing to fans of Battle Royale who can stomach its near-future realism. For more information about these films: All You Need Is Kill $POSITIONS The School Duel The Fantasia International Film Festival runs from July 16th to August 3rd 2025 at Concordia University. 9ES342: Demons Everywhere
Well, The Fantastic Four: First Steps movie is out, and it’s the most comic-accurate yet. Reed Richards is scribbling on chalkboards, tackling cosmic problems like it’s Oppenheimer with spandex. Sue’s stubborn, Ben’s mopey, Johnny’s a hothead. Honestly it’s pretty much straight out of the comics. But it’s a lot of talking heads and some folks (like Keith’s wife) dozed off. Galactus is massive and rocks the Kirby helmet, and they skip the origin story. Skipping the origin story is kind of our favorite thing in superhero movies these days. Ironheart reveals that Sacha Baron Cohen is the MCU Mephisto. Feels like they’re testing the waters of introducing Marvel Hell. Scott pitches a few casting choices for Mr. Sinister: Tom Ellis (Lucifer) or Robert Sheehan (Umbrella Academy) as the fabulous mutant. Both would kill it. On a heavier note (GET IT?), Ozzy Osbourne and Hulk Hogan are dead. Since we are jaded assholes we end up ranking them out of 10 on scumbag scale. Ozzy, allegedly shot 17 pets in a drug-fueled haze. That ain’t great. But he’s a rock star so maybe a 4/10 on the scumbag scale. Hogan, though? Terry Bollea’s a pretty big scumbag. He and Vince McMahon built modern wrestling. But his union-busting, steroid cover-ups, and MAGA-adjacent nonsense peg him at a 7/10 scumbag. Hulk Hogan was a living superhero, Terry Bollea pretty much sucked. Meanwhile on a brand new episode of Garbage Time! Scott once again has whipped up a quiz for Jon and Keith and this time it’s “Sports Movies”. The rules are simple, Scott gives us the name of a fictional sports team and if we can’t guess the movie he will then tell us the star player of the team. Jon and Keith are not big sports guys but you may be surprised by some of the right answers they manage to land on (and infuriated at some of the ones they miss). If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated. 9to5.cc Goes to Fantasia 2025: I Live Here Now, Hellcat & I Fell In Love with a Z-Grade Director From Brooklyn
Our Fantasia International Film Festival podcast continues talking about films I Fell In Love with a Z-Grade Director in Brooklyn, Hellcat and I Live Here Now. Grab your coffee and settle in for our latest Fantasia pod, where Sarah and Keith dish on three wild Fantasia flicks over a morning brew. Let’s dive into the chaos. First up, I Fell in Love with a Z-Grade Director from Brooklyn. Shina, a jaded Japanese movie star, rediscovers her passion making a gloriously trashy horror flick with Jack, a neurotic Woody Allen-esque director (played by Estevan Muñoz). It’s a love letter to Troma-style schlock, the “film within a film” is shot on a junky hi-8 camera for $500. Perfect for Fantasia nerds who dig heartwarming, low-budget chaos. Next, I Live Here Now, Julie Pacino’s debut, shot on vibrant 35mm. Lucy Fry’s Rose grapples with childhood trauma and an unexpected pregnancy in a surreal, David Lynch-ian hotel. Body image metaphors, creepy hotel staff, and a standout glass-eating scene (with killer sound design) make it a haunting thriller. Keith calls it a must-see for Lynch fans—intense, weird, and empowering. Finally, Hellcat, another world premiere, traps Dakota Gorman’s Lena in a moving camper, injured and maybe kidnapped. The constant rattle of beaded curtains and a mysterious driver crank the tension. The host of a late-night paranormal radio show (voiced by SNL’s James Austin Johnson as the host) keeps you guessing. It’s a tight, twisty 90-minute thriller with not too much gore, just psychological dread. Sarah’s all in for this sleeper hit—fingers crossed it gets a wider release so you can check it out!. Both Hellcat and I Live Here Now were world premieres so you don’t want to miss our takes on these two films which were definitely standouts so far for us at this year’s Fantasia Festival. For more information about these films: I Fell in Love with a Z-Grade Director in Brooklyn Hellcat I Live Here Now The Fantasia International Film Festival runs from July 16th to August 3rd 2025 at Concordia University. 9to5.cc Goes to Fantasia 2025: Redux Redux & Every Heavy Thing
Our Fantasia International Film Festival podcast continues. We’re sipping our morning brew and diving into Redux Redux and Every Heavy Thing, two films that couldn’t be more different but totally nail that Fantasia vibe. First up, Redux Redux, the Canadian premiere from the McManus brothers, who we’ve been fans of since their gem Funeral Kings (still a top-tier fave) and the spooky Block Island Sound. This sci-fi thriller stars Michaela McManus as Irene, a woman dimension-hopping to avenge her daughter’s murderer—hundreds, maybe thousands, of times. The multiverse mechanics? They’re there, but don’t expect a science lecture. It’s a plot device, not the point. The focus is Irene’s relentless revenge cycle and her struggle to break free from it. Stella Marcus shines in a role we won’t spoil, but trust us, her performance adds layers the trailer doesn’t hint at. With sharp dialogue, quick gory kills, and subtle world-building, it’s a tight 1-hour-45-minute thrill ride. Not straight horror, but a bloody, character-driven sci-fi thriller that’s beautifully shot. Catch it on Shudder or in theaters if it gets a wider release—you won’t regret it. Then there’s Every Heavy Thing, a Fantasia Underground pick that screams lo-fi, 70s film grit. Joe, played by Josh Fadem, is an ad salesman who witnesses a murder and gets tangled in sci-fi weirdness and paranoia. The film’s retro look—think film grain, not cheap digital—mixes cell phones with house phones, leaving you wondering, “What year is this?” Dark comedy and absurdist humor shine through, poking at gun nuts and tech billionaires. It’s a shoestring-budget vibe done deliberately, perfect for genre buffs who love a quirky, unsettling B-movie. Not for everyone, but a must for Fantasia diehards. Both films are Fantasia at its best—bold, weird, and unforgettable. Check ‘em out! The Fantasia International Film Festival runs from July 16th to August 3rd 2025 at Concordia University. The song during our intro and outro is “Until I Sleep” by Henry Homesweet and is is licensed under a Attribution 2.0 UK: England License. Osheaga Podcast 2025 (Unofficial) – Sunday: Part 2
Osheaga 2025 is only 9 days away! Our Unofficial Osheaga Podcast is back for 2025! It’s just over a week away and we’re ready to finish our deep dive into Sunday’s lineup! (More or less) every two weeks Sarah and I have been digging into the entire lineup of this year’s Osheaga to give you music recommendations all summer long. We pick ten acts from each day, we talk about them, play clips of their tunes to give you a feel for their music and tell you why we think they’re worth checking. We’re having fun and talking about music all summer long, won’t you join us? But wait – you don’t need us to tell you why you should probably check out Olivia Rodrigo now do you? So (for the purposes of this show) we ruled out the entire top line of each day of the lineup. So yes, that means you will need to decide for yourself if you’re going to see Jamie xx or not. Trust us, if you listen to all of these episodes you might find yourself running back and forth between stages all weekend and discovering your new favourite artist. Here is our first batch of 5 “non-headline” acts we think are worth checking out for Sunday. The Darcys – 1986 Ruby Waters – Liquor Run The Dare – Cheeky Renon – Nowhere to Go Chet Faker – I Wanna Try Something New See You at Osheaga! 9to5.cc Fantasia International Film Festival Podcast: Noise & I Am Frankelda
Our Fantasia International Film Festival podcast continues talking about films Noise and I Am Frankelda Noise, a Korean ghost story directed by Kim Soo-jin follows Joo-young, a deaf woman, and her sister Joo-hee, who’s obsessed with the noisy upstairs neighbor. The film kicks off with Joo-hee’s erratic behavior leading Joo-young on a tense search through their apartment complex. It’s a slow-burn horror with suspenseful moments, a few jump scares, and clever sound design. High points include Joo-young’s hearing aid toggling off and on and voice-to-text phone use, amplifying the creepiness. Sarah recommends it for ghost story fans, noting its 90-minute runtime and accessibility for those not into intense horror—perfect for teens or horror newbies. I Am Frankelda, a Mexican stop-motion feature by Roy and Arturo Ambriz, is a vibrant, musical, stop motion film set in 19th-century Mexico and a nightmare realm. Young Frankelda’s imagination fuels this fantastical world, where she’s a horror writer linked to a realm powered by nightmares. The young prince, Herneval, seeks her help to revive the realm’s fading creativity. The film’s intricate sets and unique character designs—like spider people and two-headed dragons—are stunning, though the fast-paced dialogue and fantastical names demand quick reading. Sarah suggests it’s kid-friendly for strong readers (the subtitles go by very fast), though the 113-minute runtime and dense dialogue might challenge younger viewers. Ideal for Spanish speakers or stop-motion enthusiasts. For more information about these films: Noise I Am Frankelda The Fantasia International Film Festival runs from July 16th to August 3rd 2025 at Concordia University. 9to5.cc Fantasia International Film Festival Podcast: Beans & Cielo
Our Fantasia International Film Festival podcast continues talking about films Beans and Cielo. Sarah and Keith are checking out a bunch of films at the 2025 edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival and as we do, we are recording the chats we have about the movies and letting you eavesdrop on them in the form of a podcast. It’s fun, trust us. We don’t usually plan out “themes” for any given episode but totally by accident we found that our first two films were linked (somewhat) thematically. Both feature strong willed young women dealing with things no young person should really have to deal with. One (Beans) is dealing with growing on in Kanehsatake during the 1990 Oka Crisis and the other (Cielo) is dealing with the loss of your parents. In both cases our young leading ladies need to deal with these far, far too young. For more information about these films from the Fantasia Festival website: Beans Cielo The Fantasia International Film Festival runs from July 16th to August 3rd 2025 at Concordia University. The song during our intro and outro is “Until I Sleep” by Henry Homesweet and is is licensed under a Attribution 2.0 UK: England License. 9ES341: Best of the Best
One has to wonder if there’s the possibility of a Wu-Tang Clan crossover with the Predator franchise. In Predator: Killer of Killers they explore the idea that if you manage to kill a Yautja they come for you and bring you back to their home planet. Would a Predator be able to survive The 36 Chambers? I would read that comic. I remember a time in this podcast where conspiracy theories were kind of like a fun little thought experiment where we would all go “yeah, wouldn’t THAT be crazy” but these days it’s hard to get excited about tinfoil hats when every crackpot idea seems not only plausible but downright likely. Don’t go falling out of any windows. We wrap the show up by talking a little about the staged but very real violence that Hangman Adam Page and Jox Moxley engaged in over the weekend at AEW All-In. From Bleacher Report: “Page drew first blood by repeatedly stabbing Moxley in the head with a fork. It was a brutal scene because you could see the wound opening up as it happened. There was no hiding it. It’s not like they showed some hits and then Mox had time to use a blade. It was the fork doing all the damage.” ART. Meanwhile – over on Garbage Time, Scott prepared a list of obscure aliens to quiz Jon and Keith about their knowledge of aliens. It’s a good time. We also talk about the upcoming films Superman and Fantastic Four: First Steps. Honestly you should at least head over to the Patreon just to take a look at the episode image Scott whipped up for this one, it’s dope. If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated. Tyler Lemco Returns – GPYS 318
The Montreal arts & entertainment podcast that ask Dr. Tyler Lemco: “In human history, are things getting better, or worse?” That question asked by Erik Intrevado back in episode 317. So we’ve had Tyler Lemco on the show before. The man is one of the creative legends of Montreal so he’s always got something new and exciting to plug. He ran for mayor of Montreal! And that’s not even close to the best thing he’s done in the last few years. Digging into the Go Plug Yourself archives, Tyler Lemco has been on the show 3 times as a solo guest, once as a co-guest and featured on at least 2 episodes of the Holiday Shit Show. Once again filed in the “holy shit we’ve been doing this a long time” folder: The first time Tyler was on the show was in 2013. Simpler times. Tyler’s latest creative endeavour is bringing out your creative side. That’s right, you. He’s running “Dr Lemco’s Creative Club” which is a series of events that he’s running around the city where you can show up and do something creative. Mess around with paint, make some bracelets, let your creative energies run wild. He’s doing them all over town so you should head to tlem.co and check out the calendar for when he will be in your neighbourhood. Finally, Dr Tyler Lemco is having a vernissage this Sunday July 13th at4710 Rue Saint-Ambroise Montréal, from 4 pm to 8 pm so you should check that out to. Walter J. Lyng and Troy Stark join me for this one and the less said about Indiana Jones the better I think. Credit Where Credit is Due As always, a big thank you to the providers of our theme song: Leighland Beckman and Aural Turpitude! 9ES340: Charles VII
Does it say something about the current political climate that we would much rather devote a good chunk of our time talking about the Hundred Years’ War of the late Middle-Ages than current events? I think it does. Anyways, war has always been crazy and we’re always getting better at it, fun! Scott really, really wants you to watch “Alligator” from 1980 and he’s probably in the right for doing so. Honestly, I watched the trailer and I kind of wish I hadn’t on account of the spoilers. Going into such a triumphant looking creature feature blind is probably the way to go. Also, when we talk about the scene in Batman Forever where Robin does his laundry with kung-fu or whatever it really must be seen to be believed. Trust me. I still think Batman Forever is a lot of fun and I’m honestly considering revisiting Batman and Robin to find out if it actually swings so far into being terrible that might it come out the other side as actually fun and good. It probably doesn’t but maybe time has been kind to it? Time will not be kind to that Snow White remake though. It’s awful. Meanwhile – over on Garbage Time, we talk about how important soundtracks can be for movies and how the late 90s and early 2000s were a golden age of movie soundtracks. Obviously that gets us talking about the Spawn movie. We talk about shifting heroes around in the Marvel and DC Comics universe and close it off with some podcast recommendations. If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated.
