Happy 250th Birthday USA
HAPPY 250th Birthday America!! From 1776-2026, we’ve come a LONG way baby! Many aren’t satisfied with the current state of affairs. Many are filled with pride for being part of the greatest nation on earth, and so freedom goes. From our beginnings, dissent was present. Some wanted to maintain loyalty to the crown, others wanted to claim the Independence absent in their country of origin. Was it graceful then and now – Not always, but we are titled The United States of America. No matter what events have divided us, we have stood together in times of National pride and common crisis. In tonight’s show, I will do my usual annual rant about the ills of personal fireworks, the history of 4th of July celebrations of the past, historical reminders of how this great nation was formed, and top it off with some appropriately Patriotic music – and our best wishes for a safe, happy holiday. Gratitude for the original Veterans, and every one throughout our history. Land of the Free, Because of the Brave.Want to thank Veteran & Prayer Warrior, Dave Bray (davebrayusa.com) for his permission to use his Patriot Music. Dave was my guest for the June 24, 2020 show, found at my site inaflash.org

He had brain surgery to correct an AVM; during which, he suffered a massive stroke. Brady was told he had Aphasia, and would never speak clearly again. In addition, he was told he wouldn't walk without aid, drive etc. Even now Brady cannot feel the right side of his body, though he uses it. He had to learn how to talk and walk again. Larry Freeborg on Grief and Trauma
At age 40, life as Larry Freeborg knew it, ended in a single week. Just after Christmas in 1979, he lost his 39 year old wife to leukemia — and days later, his job of 18 years. Suddenly, he was a widowed father of four, with no income and no roadmap forward. What followed wasn’t a quick recovery, but a decades-long journey of learning how to grieve, how to lead with love, and how to rediscover hope in the face of unimaginable loss. Along the way, he discovered a simple but powerful truth: no matter what life takes away, you are always at a choice.Today, he is the author of “Always At Choice” and the founder of Stepping Through the Gate, a wise-elder coaching service. Through his writing and coaching, he helps individuals move from significant losses into a place of healing, renewal, and fully engaged life possibilities. With the publication of Always At Choice, Larry’s mission is simple yet profound: to remind others that while loss changes everything, it never takes away the power to choose, to heal, to grow, and to live again.Learn more at www.alwaysatchoice.net and www.steppingthroughthegate.comRecovery Now is a gathering place for anyone seeking relief from the challenges of life on life's terms. In this role, she handled pre- and post-flight procedures, in-flight observation, emergency duties, and aircraft refueling, once again setting a historic precedent as the first woman in this position. An avid cyclist, Ritaann has logged over 125,000 miles on her bike and competed in four Ironman competitions, even winning her age group as part of a four-person team in the 3,000-mile 2012 Race Across America. However, on February 3, 2015, while riding in a group, she was thrown off her bike at 30 mph and, despite wearing a helmet, suffered a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). It took five years for her injury to be properly diagnosed, during which she faced neuro-fatigue, vision, and cognitive challenges. Through her own research and persistence, Ritaann helped doctors recognize her condition and now advocates for functional therapy approaches that help brain injury survivors regain mobility, strength, and independence.Donate to Rita's Ride at: donorbox.org/ritaann-s-rideDenny Armington serves as President of the Youth Opportunity Foundation, Inc. Life and Therapeutics After Multiple Concussions
Rico Petrini is a former 4 year starter at Linebacker with Oregon State University and Hall of Fame 4-sport athlete at Serra High School in San Mateo, CA. During his time playing football, Rico sustained over 15k subconcussive hits and 25+ concussions.Rico felt that he had survived his time playing with no major lasting impact to himself, until March of 2021 when he experienced 'systemic' failure of his brain and body affecting mood, behavior, sleep, cognitive, and physical functions. Within a six month period, Rico's decline was aggressive and severe, with referrals to multiple medical specialists and hospitals to try and determine the root cause which with every symptom tracked back to neuro in nature. In July of 2021, Rico was enrolled in a Open Study at the University of Utah on the use of red light for football players with traumatic brain injury and/or suspected CTE. Through the use of red light over the past five years and other supplements or protocols, Rico is now functionally operating at or near his pre-symptom state.Rico now uses his brokenness to be of service to others in the TBI and CTE community offering support and guidance for persons with brain injury and their caregivers based on his shared experience. A Mystery Disease
After losing her late love almost twenty years, Susan Toms found herself face to face with the same rare disease, but doctors across the country turned her away. The typical pituitary tumor signaling this disease was nowhere to be found. Most people have never heard of “acromegaly” but are all too familiar with the beloved animated film, Shrek. Interestingly, Shrek himself is thought to be modeled after Maurice Tillis, a famous French professional wrestler who had the disease. As demonstrated by his gigantic features, this disease causes one’s hands, feet, face and skull to grow, usually as the result of a pituitary tumor. According to the National Organization for Rare Disorders, acromegaly occurs in about 50 – 70 people per million, with three to eleven of every million developing the disease yearly. Diagnosis can be delayed as symptoms manifest slowly over several years with those affected and those around them often unaware of the changes. After a two year quest involving several cities and physicians to no avail, Susan finally found a doctor willing to think outside the box. Like the others, he did not find the key typical “tell”, but he was willing to go the extra steps, uncovering the desired mystery the day before Thanksgiving 2024. Susan finally had something to be grateful for, and was cured of the insidious disease in January 2025. Many important take-aways from this journey, making it worth your time to listen. We hope to raise awareness on many levels, summed up by Dr. Kunal Mehta in the quote below. Join us for this incredible story!“Susan’s persistence and careful observation of her own symptoms were vital. Her story is a reminder that when patients and physicians work together with open minds, even the rarest diagnoses can be uncovered. Acromegaly is rare, and when it arises outside the pituitary, it challenges even seasoned clinicians. Susan’s case shows the importance of listening deeply to patients and looking beyond the expected and finding them can change a life.”Recovery Now is a gathering place for anyone seeking recovery from the challenges of life on life's terms. Tools To Assist In Recovery
Tonight's show is focused on specific tools to aid in recovery. Practices found in DBT, CBT, and other skills training. After major trauma we often find we are ill equipped to cope in the most productive ways, both physically and mentally. We may get discharge orders, but no clue how to adjust to our "differently-abled" lives moving forward. We focus on adding tools to our box, broadening our ability to "respond" positively, rather than "react" in self harming ways. Recovery Now is a gathering place for anyone seeking recovery from the challenges of life on life’s terms. Guests share their experience, strength, and hope. We discuss useful tools that have helped us lighten the load, of our journey through recovery. More will be revealed! Tune in, visit Chat or join us on air. Know your labels!! Join us as we discuss shopping for better health - The quality of the food chain has slid to what can be detrimental for optimal health. The spotlight is starting to shine on what to look for to enable our food to be medicine, not poison. With obseity at near half the population from children on up, it's time to recognize over-eating isn't always the culprit. It doesn't help, but much of it is chicken and egg theory. No pun intended. The problem may well stem from ingredients we aren't even aware are in our food. Big business, with some big consequences. We will also include liquid foods, and enteral feeding. Bill Keck Life of Service After a Rough Start on Recovery Now with Kim Justus
I had known Bill for many years, when I learned he'd suffered a TBI. He'd had a lengthy road of recovery the past couple years, and then a severe car accident too. Bill was always strong as a bull, and few have had a more colorful past and turn around. Between his own addiction, chronic pain, and mental health challenges - He fought like the warrior he had always been and overcame, continuing to live a life of service. In spite of his challenges, Bill had a heart bigger than most. I was blessed to have him as part of my life for so long. Bill Keck was a dear friend who passed in 2021, but his story lives on. Prior to his retirement, Bill, a US Navy Veteran who did two tours in Nam, developed an alcohol and drug treatment center, within a Homeless Shelter. He worked there for almost 20yrs, during which he wrote a book about recovery and miracles. See: youtube.com/watch?v=HHjh6OZvwug We were out of touch for a few years, so I was shocked to hear about his brain injury. After being a host for so long, I wonder if he had prior blows to the head during his service, either to our country or at the shelter. God Bless you Bill - You are missed. This show is a gathering place for anyone seeking recovery from the challenges of life on life's terms. I introduce topics, and survivor's share their experience, strength and hope. We discuss useful tools that have helped us lighten the load, of our journey through recovery. More will be revealed! Tune in, stop in and call in. This is a "we" recovery program, because it is in the "we," that we find the new "me." We focus on the four A's of Recovery - Awareness, Acceptance, Action & Adaptation. Dr. Paul Wand and Integrative Neurology on Recovery Now with Kim Justus
Dr. Paul Wand is a clinical neurologist in private practice since 1982, having vast experience diagnosing and treating neurological conditions for 40 yrs. He has always had an active interest in research since medical school. His clinical research interests include newer and more effective methods of diagnosing and treating neurological conditions. The advantage of his unique and innovative treatment protocols stem from combining traditional and alternative methods, a field known as integrative neurology. He has developed a multidisciplinary treatment approach to Traumatic Brain Injury, post-concussion syndrome, Autism, chronic pain, arthritic, neck and back pain, hormonal imbalances and peripheral neuropathy, especially the diabetic type. His protocols have demonstrated effectively they can reverse neurological deficits whereas the traditional treatment cannot. Dr. Wand's combined approach of traditional and alternative treatments seems to be the most effective when treating and reversing what is usually considered to be permanent damage to the central and peripheral nervous system. Because there is NO standard treatment for Concussion, Dr. Wand wrote The Concussion Cure, 3 Proven Methods to Heal your Brain. The book is unique in genre since it is the only book which explains how to both diagnose and treat all the symptoms of a concussion with two specific tests which themselves generate the treatments. The Brain-Gut Connection with Kim and Caren on Recovery Now
Most of you have probably heard the term "Leaky Gut" syndrome, but don't fully understand the mechanics. The brain-gut connection, also known as the gut-brain axis, is a two way communication system between the brain and the digestive system. It's a complex network of nerves and signals that allows the brain and gut to work together to keep the digestive system functioning properly. Why is this important? How can you determine when your brain-gut connection isn't working correctly, and what are the possible consequences? What can you do to help facilitate that crucial balance again? Listen in and see! Something Shiny After Brain Injury on Recovery Now with Kim Justus
Many residuals can be new issues we grapple with after Brain Injury. Difficulty focusing without getting distracted is one of those. This intrusion can become frustrating and make us angry. It was on one of those days, many of us survivors began to refer to this as "something shiny". To survive around this community, it helps to have a sense of humor. We are intent on the task in front of us, and suddenly something shiny pulls us away, and when we return .. the bread crumbs have blown away! Tonight co-host Caren Robinson and I will discuss your shiny distractions, what we can do to mitigate and maybe a few other life alterations to compensation for after brain injury. We also want to pay tribute to the heros of 9-11, and prayers to the fallen of that game changing day that defines a few generations thereafter. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families. This show is a gathering place for anyone seeking recovery from the challenges of life on life's terms. We discuss useful tools that have helped us lighten the load, of our journey through recovery. More will be revealed! This is a "we" recovery program, because it is in the "we," that we find the new "me." We focus on the four A's of Recovery: Awareness, Acceptance, Action and Adaptation. This is a place for survivor's striving to become thrivers, which takes a good bit of Warrior! Remembering Rico in Awareness Month on Recovery Now with Kim Justus
September is Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month. An estimated 6.7 million people in the United States have an unruptured brain aneurysm or 1 in 50 people. The annual rate of rupture is approximately 8 – 10 per 100,000 people. About 30,000 people in the United States suffer a brain aneurysm rupture each year. A brain aneurysm ruptures every 18 minutes. There are almost 500,000 deaths worldwide each year caused by brain aneurysms, and half the victims are younger than 50. Ruptured brain aneurysms are fatal in about 50% of cases. Of those who survive, about 66% suffer some permanent neurological deficit. Approximately 15% of people with a ruptured aneurysm die before reaching the hospital. Most of the deaths are due to rapid and massive brain injury from the initial bleeding. We recently lost a valued advocate in the Brain Aneurysm Community - Rico Principe. He founded one of the largest online aneurysm support pages on FB, helping thousands. We'd like to pay tribute to him and the service he provided so many. The shock of his passing has rocked the community. We will be joined by his lovely daughter Abby as we share her grief, We will also hear from fellow Brain Aneurysm Survivors in the interest of sharing, educating, and raising awareness. All know of Heart Disease, Cancer, etc. Much fewer know about Aneurysm, unless their lives have been touched by it. More on Misdiagnosis of TBI from Caren and Kim on Recovery Now
Ignorance causes misdiagnosis and therefore ineffective (or no) treatment for children with Brain Injury - Particularly ones with less obvious "tells". Professionals, parents, educators, and others are not familiar with common symptoms that point to Brain Injury. As a result, too many kids are thrust into a life of challenges that are never tied back to the root cause of TBI. In turn a disfunctional circle forms, robbing these children a quality of life and independence they may have achieved. These patterns cause so many to fall through the cracks, then following them into adulthood. Profiling becomes an issue based on ability level both outside and inside the brain injury community. Needs based services, advocacy groups, and others are more sympathetic to those obviously impaired. The others, deal not only with their injury but proving themselves - Even if they don't recognize the issue themselves.
