Revisiting the Golden Era of Cassettes: The Original Illegal Downloads
In today's age of digital streaming and instant downloads, it's hard to imagine a time when music sharing involved physical tapes and a lot of patience. For many who grew up in the late 20th century, recording songs off the radio onto cassette tapes was an art form—an exercise in timing, precision, and sometimes sheer luck. Back then, listeners tuned into stations like East Coast Radio with a blank cassette ready, eager to capture their favourite hits. The trick was to press 'Record' right when the DJ stopped talking and hope they didn’t interrupt the end of the song. For individuals like Deon G and Andi James, cassettes were more than a medium; they were part of growing up. Deon remembers his Walkman-like device, and Andi recalls recording Mary J. Blige’s hits while battling DJ chatter. Tasha recorded Crazy Tom's “Butterfly,” while Claire caught “Groovy Kind of Love.” For some, like listener 6, it was about learning lyrics. Kerry and Deon remember Saturday rituals with stacks of TDK tapes. CDs eventually replaced cassettes, but the charm of those imperfect recordings lives on. If you remember the cassette era, share your first radio recording memory with East Coast Radio. ECR site
