All Things Cardio-Oncology

The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) and IC-OS jointly published a paper titled: “Prevention and management of cardiovascular disease in adults with cancer: an International Cardio-Oncology Society (IC-OS) and Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) clinical practice statement”. This is a critical contribution to the literature because it was produced by and for the hematology/oncology community. Historically, cardio-oncology has been dominated by cardiologists. We are seeking to address this by working closely with the hematology/oncology community on various projects including publications. Joshua Levenson MD is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He studied Chemistry at Amherst College followed by medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and internal medicine residency at The University of Michigan. He returned to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center for Cardiology Fellowship prior to joining faculty in 2017. Dr Levenson is a noninvasive cardiologist, cardiac imager, and clinician educator. He serves as Director of UPMC’s Center for Cardio-Oncology, co-Director of Noninvasive at UPMC Shadyside, and Associate Director of UPMC’s Cardiology Fellowship.

Dr. Isabella Mahe is the first author of the API-CAT trial and in this episode she reviews predictors associated with clinically relevant bleeding. He has been an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at AUBMC in Lebanon for the last 5 years and has published more than 55 research papers, consensus documents, and position papers that directly contribute to the advancement of cardiology and Heart Failure.

Dr. Armstrong is a member, St. Jude Faculty, Chair, Department of Epidemiology and Cancer Control, Co-Leader, Cancer Control & Survivorship Program and Endowed Chair in Epidemiology & Cancer Control, St Jude's Research Hospital.

Dr. Singh has been instrumental in starting the Diabetic Cardio–metabolic unit at Netcare Umhlanga Hospital, Durban and instrumental in starting the first Cardio–oncology Unit in South Africa, and in fact, the continent of Africa. He is President of the Cardio–oncology Society of Southern Africa (COSOSA). This is the first Cardio–oncology Society in South Africa and in fact, Southern Africa. He is also President of the S. Africa chapter of the International Cardio–oncology Society (ICOS).

Dr. Alexia Oliver opened our 2025 Global Summit sharing her harrowing account of being on the brink of completing her medical training only to discover she had an aggressive lymphoma. Her treatment was followed by chemotherapy-induced heart failure so severe she was placed on the transplant list, yet she slowly recovered against all expectations. After additional setbacks—including bilateral hip replacements—she returned to medical school with a renewed sense of purpose, grounded in the conviction that having a “why” makes survival possible. Amy's treatment was nearly suspended due to cardiovascular complications. Cardio-Oncology intervened allowing her to continue life saving therapy. You don't want to miss her story. Amy explains of herself, "Originally from Lincoln, Nebraska, I’m a proud graduate of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln with a degree in Elementary Education and hold a Master’s from Northwest Missouri State. I’ve been married to my high school sweetheart for 33 years, and we have four amazing kids—two grown and married, plus a 14-year-old and a 12-year-old who keep us on our toes. I’m starting my 27th year of teaching and currently teach 3rd grade in Liberty, Missouri."

Dr. Susan Dent is a Medical Oncologist at the Wilmot Cancer Institute, Professor of Medicine and Director of Cardio Oncology at the University of Rochester. She is also President of the International Cardio-Oncology Society. In this podcast she provides a summary of a talk originally presented at the ASCO meeting in 2025.

Samantha Siegel, MD is an internal medicine physician with Kaiser Permanente. She explains, "I began my primary care practice with a thorough understanding of advanced disease processes that often result in hospitalization and the type of care people need when they transition back home. Then, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma and underwent over two years of intensive cancer treatment, including an autologous bone marrow transplant. This led me to study integrative medicine and to focus my practice on the evolving field of cancer survivorship." A cardiologist by training, Isabelle Mahé is Professor of Internal Medicine at Université Paris Cité. She is Head of the Internal Medicine Department at a teaching hospital (Louis Mourier, Assistance Publique Hôpitaux de Paris, Paris, France), which includes an oncology unit and a vascular disease unit. She established a tele-expertise service to help physicians manage patients with anticoagulant concerns. She is also chair of the scientific council for the INNOVTE-FCRIN Network (Investigation Network On Venous Thrombo-Embolism) and for a patients' association for anticoagulant therapy (Anticoag PASS S2D). She has broad experience in methodology and in clinical trials evaluating anticoagulants in different cardiologic or vascular indications. Her own research projects have resulted in a better management of anticoagulants in complex patients (renally impaired, elderly and cancer patients. She is leading the international prospective randomised API-CAT Study (focusing on the extended anticoagulant treatment in patients with cancer-associated thrombosis).Sebastian Szmit graduated from the Military Medical Academy in Poland (2002). From 2002 to 2012 he worked at the Military Institute of Medicine in the (1) Emergency Department, (2) Department of Internal Medicine and Cardiology, (3) Department of Oncology. From 2012 to 2022 he was employed by the Department of Pulmonary Circulation, Thromboembolic Diseases and Cardiology as cardiologist consultant of the Department of Oncology at the European Health Centre Otwock. The IC-OS Exercise Working Group published a landmark article in the European Heart Journal. "The aim of this whitepaper is to review the current state of the literature on the effects of cardio-oncology rehabilitation and exercise (CORE). There is an urgent need to reinforce and extend the evidence informing the cardiovascular care of cancer survivors." Dr. Fernando Rivera-Theurel is a Cardiologist with specific training in Cardiovascular Prevention & Rehabilitation and Cardio-Oncology at the University of Toronto. He leads the Cardio-Oncology Rehabilitation Program at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre and Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. He is the Co-Chair of the Exercise and Rehabilitation IC-OS working group and the Education Co-Lead of the Canadian Cardio-Oncology Network (CCON). His research is focused on the use of technology in cardiac rehab, cardio-oncology rehabilitation and cardiac rehabilitation in cardiac amyloidosis.

Kerry Skurka’s professional career was as a nurse in cardiology, and after her own cancer experience she moved to oncology. While caring for cancer patients she saw cardiac symptoms routinely and therefore welcomed the opportunity to be the first Cardio-Oncology Nurse Navigator at Franciscan Health in Indianapolis. Together with her cardio-oncologist Vijay Rao the program grew to 3 nurse navigators and 6 satellite clinics. During this time Kerry was given the opportunity to start the Nursing Workgroup within the International Cardio-oncology Society to grow the field of cardio-oncology nursing.Losing both her husband and father to cancer, Kerry’s passion for this work continues. Cezar Iliescu, MD is Professor, Department of Cardiology, and an Interventional Cardiologist, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TXDr. Iliescu has published extensively on the issue of managing pericardial disease in patients with cancer. Today he discusses pericardial effusions, pericardial tumors, pericarditis, and other related complications facing patients with cancer.

Dra Teresa López-Fernández is a clinical investigator and consultant cardiologist at La Paz University Hospital in Madrid, Spain. She is specializes in cardiac imaging and cardio-oncology (she is board certified by the International Cardio-Oncology Society), and currently coordinates the cardio-oncology team at La Paz University Hospital. Dr. Barac and Dr. Bloom were authors on a new scientific statement from the Heart Failure Society of America on Cardio-Oncology. In this episode they discuss highlights from this statement. Dr. Ana Barac serves as the Medical Director of the Cardio-Oncology Program at Inova Health in Fairfax. VA in the Wash DC area. She is a Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University and her interests focus on advanced cardiovascular imaging. Dr. Bloom is a professor in the Department of Medicine and a member of the Division of Cardiology at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine. A renowned expert in cardio-oncology and heart failure, she joined New York University Langone Health as director of the Cardio-Oncology Program in 2023.

Jeff Sharman M.D. is the medical director of hematology research for the US Oncology / Sarah Cannon Research Institute network. This consortium manages approximately one out of every five cancer patients treated in the United States and is the largest private research network in the country.  Dr Sharman developed the original idea of using BTK inhibitors to treat lymphoid malignancies and conducted the first in human studies of ibrutinib within his private practice at the Willamette Valley Cancer and Research Center in Eugene, Oregon, US.  Here Dr. Sharman addresses hypertension and arrhythmias related to BTK inhibitors.
