The Curse Of The Cup - Part 1: Jules Rimet's Still - Missing!
Some people can't wait for it to finish, some people perhaps never want it to end, but we have upon us the culmination of the 2026 World Cup. It's a tournament that has seen unlikely heroes, tears and controversy, and as the episode drops, it's the weekend that sees one team lifting aloft the ultimate prize in sport, the FIFA World Cup.But back in 1966, a year that needs no introduction to football fans really, there almost wasn't a cup to lift aloft - except for an unlikely hero who came on to save the day... The Bogus Doctor : Episode 527
We all trust our doctors, don't we? In many ways, we have little choice. We rely on them to diagnose illness, offer advice and make decisions that can have a profound impact on our lives. But in today's episode of the UK True Crime podcast, I look at the extraordinary story of a doctor who wasn't at all what she seemed. For more than two decades, she practised medicine in the UK despite not being properly qualified, exposing serious failures in the systems designed to protect patients. It's a story of deception, misplaced trust and missed opportunities - and one that raises uncomfortable questions about how such an astonishing fraud was allowed to continue for so long. Please join me for the next episode of the UK True Crime Podcast on Tuesday.Support me at Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/UKTrueCrimeWriting Credit: Chris WoodYou can buy Chris's second book, 'Death in the Theatre' here: https://www.amazon.com/Death-Theatre-Chris-Wood/dp/1399009117Watch my YouTube Channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@Adam-uktruecrime/videosGet All The News First - Subscribe To My Newsletterhttps://uktruecrime.comJoin UK True Crime Facebook Grouphttps://www.facebook.com/groups/UKTrueCrime Hosted on Acast. The Newlywed Who Never Came Home: The Murder of Anna McGurk | Ep. 262
On the evening of August 28, 1991, 23-year-old Anna McGurk left her job at Gloucester City Council after working a little later than usual to make up for a dental appointment earlier that day. She only had a short walk back to her car, which was parked in a council car park beside the River Severn. It was a route she'd taken countless times before, and one that should have ended with her arriving home to her husband. Instead, Anna disappeared without a trace, triggering a murder investigation that would leave the city of Gloucester asking how such a horrific crime could happen in broad daylight.Anna's murder shocked Gloucestershire and exposed serious concerns about safety around Gloucester Docks and Castlemeads car park, where staff had previously raised fears about the isolated location. As detectives hunted for her killer, witnesses came forward describing a suspicious man seen loitering near the riverside in the days before the attack. The investigation would soon uncover a disturbing chain of events that raised difficult questions about policing, the criminal justice system and whether Anna's death could have been prevented. In this episode of British Murders with Stuart Blues, we examine the murder of Anna McGurk. We explore Anna's life, her marriage to childhood sweetheart Brian McGurk, the timeline of her disappearance, the police investigation, the evidence that led detectives to Andrew Patrick Hagans, and the courtroom proceedings that followed. We also look at the lasting impact the case had on Gloucester, the changes made to staff safety after her death, and the parole hearings that continue to attract attention more than three decades later.Exclusive content:Patreon - Ad Free, Early Access, Exclusive EpisodesFollow the show:British Murders with Stuart BluesDisclaimer:The case discussed in this podcast episode is real and represents the worst day in many people's lives. The Drugs Mule : Episode 525
Melissa Reid and Michaella McCollum became known around the world as the "Peru Two" after they were caught trying to smuggle 11 kilograms of cocaine out of Peru. They said they had been drawn into the operation by an organised crime gang and felt they couldn't back out, while others argued they had knowingly taken a huge risk in return for money. Their arrest made headlines across the globe and sparked years of debate about where the line lies between exploitation and personal responsibility. In this episode, I look beyond the headlines to explore how two teenagers ended up at the centre of one of the most talked-about drug trafficking cases of recent times, and why their story still divides opinion today.I release episodes of the UK True Crime podcast every Tuesday and Friday, so please do join me again on Tuesday for the next regular episode and do join me on Sunday for my interview with top forensic psychologist Kerry Daynes.Support me at Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/UKTrueCrimeWatch my YouTube Channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@Adam-uktruecrime/videosGet All The News First - Subscribe To My Newsletterhttps://uktruecrime.comJoin UK True Crime Facebook Grouphttps://www.facebook.com/groups/UKTrueCrime Hosted on Acast. The Dunblane School Shooting: The Tragedy That Changed Britain's Gun Laws | Ep. 261
On the morning of March 13, 1996, children arrived at Dunblane Primary School expecting an ordinary Wednesday. Parents waved goodbye at the school gates, teachers prepared for the day ahead, and a Primary 1 class gathered in the gymnasium for a PE lesson. Within minutes, that normal school morning would become one of the darkest days in British history, devastating a close-knit Scottish community and changing the country's gun laws forever. The Dunblane shooting claimed the lives of sixteen young children and their teacher, Gwen Mayor, in what remains the deadliest school shooting in UK history. In the years that followed, the tragedy prompted the Cullen Inquiry, the Snowdrop Campaign, and sweeping changes to firearms legislation across Great Britain. Nearly thirty years later, Dunblane continues to be remembered not only for the horror of that day, but for the extraordinary dignity, resilience and compassion shown by the families, survivors and wider community. In this episode of British Murders with Stuart Blues, we examine the Dunblane shotting in detail. We explore the background of gunman Thomas Hamilton, the warning signs and missed opportunities before the attack, the events of March 13, 1996, and the lives of the sixteen children and their teacher, ensuring they are remembered as people rather than simply victims. We also look at the emergency response and how the town of Dunblane continues to honour those whose lives were so tragically cut short. We also reflect on the experience of survivor and future two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray, and how his success helped shine a more positive light on Dunblane in the years that followed. If you have been affected by the content discuss within this episode, please consider using one of the below resources for help:Samaritans (UK & ROI): 116 123 or samaritans.orgChildline (under 19s): 0800 1111 or childline.org.ukShout (text support): Text SHOUT to 85258Exclusive content:Patreon - Ad Free, Early Access, Exclusive EpisodesFollow the show:British Murders with Stuart BluesDisclaimer:The case discussed in this podcast episode is real and represents the worst day in many people's lives. The Stalker Who Walked Free : Episode 524
"Is it fair that a young lady who dresses to attract, the queen bee attracting the drones, the queen bee that dresses to kill... cries out foul because somebody finds her attractive?" Shockingly, those were the words of the defence barrister during the trial. Understandably, this sparked widespread outrage at the time and remains one of the most extraordinary examples of victim blaming in a British courtroom.A chance encounter with a stranger turned Perry Southall's life into a nightmare. What followed was a relentless campaign of stalking that left her living in fear and exposed serious flaws in the way the justice system dealt with dangerous offenders. Perry's courage in speaking out helped change the conversation around stalking in Britain, making this one of the country's most important stalking cases. Please join me for the next episode of the UK True Crime Podcast on Friday.Support me at Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/UKTrueCrimeWriting Credit: Chris WoodYou can buy Chris's second book, 'Death in the Theatre' here: https://www.amazon.com/Death-Theatre-Chris-Wood/dp/1399009117Watch my YouTube Channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@Adam-uktruecrime/videosGet All The News First - Subscribe To My Newsletterhttps://uktruecrime.comJoin UK True Crime Facebook Grouphttps://www.facebook.com/groups/UKTrueCrime Hosted on Acast. Betrayed By Her Lodger: The Murder of Julie Reilly | Ep. 258
In February 2018, 47-year-old Julie Reilly was captured on CCTV inside an Aldi supermarket on Paisley Road West in Glasgow. Originally from Auchinleck in East Ayrshire, Julie had spent years rebuilding her life after enduring unimaginable personal tragedy, battling addiction and recovering from a serious brain injury that left her vulnerable. A devoted mother of four and grandmother, she was determined to live independently and remained a familiar face throughout Glasgow's south side. When she suddenly stopped attending medical appointments and vanished without explanation, her family knew something wasn't right. As concern grew, Police Scotland launched a missing persons investigation spanning Govan, Cardonald and the wider Glasgow area. Detectives examined CCTV footage, followed reported sightings and appealed directly to the public for information, while Julie's family desperately searched for answers. What initially appeared to be a routine missing person enquiry soon became far more troubling, leading investigators down a path that exposed a disturbing betrayal of trust and one of the most shocking murder cases Scotland had seen in recent years. In this episode of British Murders with Stuart Blues, we examine the murder of Julie Reilly and the investigation that followed her disappearance. We explore Julie's difficult but resilient life story, the growing concerns that led to her being reported missing, the extensive search efforts across Glasgow, the forensic breakthroughs that transformed the enquiry, and the man who would ultimately admit responsibility for her death. We also look at the impact Julie's murder had on her family, their determination to bring her home, and the remarkable detective work that finally provided the answers they had spent more than a year searching for.Exclusive content:Patreon - Ad Free, Early Access, Exclusive EpisodesFollow the show:British Murders with Stuart BluesDisclaimer:The case discussed in this podcast episode is real and represents the worst day in many people's lives. The Pub Landlord Who Refused to Back Down: The Murder of Christian Thornton | Ep. 256
On the afternoon of August 11, 2019, customers at a popular pub in Widnes watched as landlord Christian Thornton confronted a man he had recently barred from the premises. For Chris, it was part of the job. As the long-serving landlord of the Hammer and Pincers, he had spent years looking after customers, serving pints, organising charity events, and helping make his pub a cornerstone of the local community. But what began as a routine confrontation would end in a shocking act of violence that devastated his family and sent shockwaves through Cheshire and beyond.Known affectionately as "Tigger", Chris was a devoted husband to Pam, a father of three young children, and one of the most recognisable faces in Widnes. Friends described him as kind, funny and always willing to help others. Whether he was supporting local musicians, raising money for charity, serving a cold beer to regulars or cheering on his children's sporting achievements, Chris was a man who put people first. His murder left not only a grieving family, but an entire town struggling to come to terms with the loss of a man who meant so much to so many.In this episode of British Murders with Stuart Blues, we examine the murder of Christian Thornton, the events that led to his fatal confrontation with Lee Abbott, and the investigation that followed. We explore the background tensions between the two men, the warnings and threats made in the days before the attack, the police investigation, Abbott's arrest, trial and conviction for murder, and the remarkable community response that saw hundreds rally around Chris's family. We also look at the wider concerns surrounding knife crime, pub safety, and violence in Britain's towns and cities. This is the story of a respected pub landlord, a senseless act of violence, and a community determined that Christian "Tigger" Thornton would never be forgotten.Exclusive content:Patreon - Ad Free, Early Access, Exclusive EpisodesFollow the show:British Murders with Stuart BluesDisclaimer:The case discussed in this podcast episode is real and represents the worst day in many people's lives. John Christie and the Murders of 10 Rillington Place | Ep. 255
In March 1953, a tenant in a run-down Notting Hill house tapped on a section of wallpaper and noticed a hollow sound coming from behind it. Curious, he peeled the paper back and made a horrifying discovery. Hidden inside a small kitchen alcove was the body of a woman. When police arrived, they found two more bodies concealed alongside her. Further searches uncovered human remains beneath floorboards and buried in the garden. The house was 10 Rillington Place. Its quiet, softly spoken ground-floor tenant was a 53-year-old former police reserve officer named John Christie. What followed shocked the UK to its core. Christie would confess to a series of murders spanning a decade, targeting vulnerable women and concealing their bodies within the cramped terraced property. Yet the most disturbing revelation was still to come. Just three years earlier, Christie's neighbour, Timothy Evans, had been hanged for the murder of his baby daughter after Christie gave evidence against him at the trial. Now, investigators were forced to confront the possibility that the real killer had been living downstairs all along. In this episode of British Murders with Stuart Blues, we examine the life and crimes of John Christie, from his troubled upbringing in Halifax and his move to London, to the murders committed at 10 Rillington Place between 1943 and 1953. We explore the lives of his victims, Ruth Fuerst, Muriel Eady, Beryl and Geraldine Evans, Ethel Christie, Rita Nelson, Kathleen Maloney and Hectorina MacLennan, and look at how Christie manipulated, deceived and ultimately murdered those who crossed his path.We also examine the investigation that led to his arrest, his confessions, trial and execution, along with the devastating miscarriage of justice that saw Timothy Evans sent to the gallows for crimes he almost certainly did not commit. Finally, we look at the decades-long fight to clear Timothy's name, and how the case became one of the most influential factors in the eventual abolition of the death penalty in the UK. This is the story of a serial killer who hid in plain sight, the innocent man who paid the ultimate price for his crimes, and the case that changed British justice forever.Exclusive content:Patreon - Ad Free, Early Access, Exclusive EpisodesFollow the show:British Murders with Stuart BluesDisclaimer:The case discussed in this podcast episode is real and represents the worst day in many people's lives. Undressing 'Jack The Stripper' - Part 2
He's the London serial killer you may never have even knew existed - from the late 1950's to the mid 1960's, West London was shocked by the deaths of several sex workers, stripped, strangled, and their bodies dumped unceremoniously, like pieces of rubbish. It's commonly considered to be the UK's most prolific series of unsolved serial killings, claiming more victims than his similar namesake the previous century, and in a joint 8 part series between myself, and the award nominated Murder Mile podcast, each week myself and Mike will examine the case in full detail, sifting through misinformation, lies, rumour and perhaps even downright corruption. The True Crime Enthusiast and Murder Mile have brought you so far the accounts of four dead women – Elizabeth Figg, Gwyneth Rees, Hannah Tailford and Irene Lockwood, found dead around the river Thames over a four year period from 1959 to 1963 – with police considering:Was there another Ripper on the loose?Police were soon to believe that there was – with the deaths of another four women, whose tales we shall account in Part 2 and B.Join myself on The True Crime Enthusiast for parts 1 to 4, and Mike over on Murder Mile for parts A to D, as we continue Undressing - 'Jack The Stripper'The episode contains details and descriptions of crimes and events, including descriptions of a sexual nature, that some listeners may find disturbing or distressing, so discretion is advised whilst listening in. Murder in Tiger Bay: Lynette White and the Cardiff Three | Ep. 249
A 20-year-old woman is working in Cardiff’s docklands district in the early hours of February 14, 1988. She is trying to earn enough money to get through another night and return home safely by morning. Instead, Lynette White was subjected to a savage and sustained attack in a flat above a betting shop in Tiger Bay. By sunrise, she is dead, and one of the most notorious murder investigations in British history is about to begin.Police came under intense pressure to find Lynette’s killer quickly, and what followed was a case that shocked Wales and later the entire United Kingdom. Detectives arrested a group of local men, three of whom were convicted despite no reliable forensic evidence linking them to the crime. The alleged confession was fiercely disputed, allegations of police misconduct emerged, and years later the convictions were overturned, exposing a catastrophic miscarriage of justice that would become known as the story of the Cardiff Three. In this episode of British Murders with Stuart Blues, we examine the murder of Lynette White and the long road to justice that followed for the Cardiff Three. From Lynette’s life in Cardiff and the events of that Valentine’s weekend, to the flawed police investigation, controversial interviews, false witness testimony, appeals, and the public outcry that followed, this is a deeply distressing true crime story of violence, corruption claims, and lives destroyed on every side.We also explore how advances in DNA testing finally identified Jeffrey Gafoor as Lynette’s killer more than a decade later. We break down the forensic breakthrough, his eventual confession, the sentence handed down, and the lasting impact the case had on British policing and criminal justice. This is a heartbreaking story about a young woman failed in life and death, three innocent men imprisoned, and the truth taking far too long to emerge.Exclusive content:Patreon - Ad Free, Early Access, Exclusive EpisodesFollow the show:British Murders with Stuart BluesDisclaimer:The case discussed in this podcast episode is real and represents the worst day in many people's lives. Justice After 26 Years: The Murder of Norah Trott | Ep. 247
A woman closes up her dress shop on a quiet November evening in Rochford, Essex, and heads out to run a simple errand for a friend. It should have been an ordinary trip, one of those everyday moments no one thinks twice about. But somewhere between locking the door and reaching her car, 63-year-old Norah Trott was attacked and left dying in a lane just yards from her own home.By the early hours of the next morning, her body had been discovered behind the Old Ship pub, sending shockwaves through the close-knit town. Detectives launched a huge murder investigation which saw thousands of people questioned, and witnesses reported seeing a suspicious young man carrying Norah’s blood-stained bag. Yet despite the urgency and scale of the inquiry, the killer vanished. In this episode of British Murders with Stuart Blues, we explore the murder of Norah Trott and the decades-long investigation that followed. From the frantic early police search in 1978, to hypnosis sessions with a key eyewitness, evolving suspect sketches, and repeated cold case reviews, this is a story of persistence in the face of multiple dead ends. We examine the fear that gripped Rochford, the brutality of the attack, and how investigators refused to let Norah’s case be forgotten even as the decades rolled on.We also break down the extraordinary forensic breakthrough that finally solved the case. Thanks to advances in DNA technology and the National DNA Database, evidence preserved from the original crime scene was re-tested more than 25 years later, leading detectives to Wayne Doherty after a routine police arrest on an unrelated matter. We cover his arrest, trial, conviction, and the life sentence that followed. This is a powerful true crime story about justice delayed, modern forensic science, cold case murder investigations, and the reality that some killers live on borrowed time.Exclusive content:Patreon - Ad Free, Early Access, Exclusive EpisodesFollow the show:British Murders with Stuart BluesDisclaimer:The case discussed in this podcast episode is real and represents the worst day in many people's lives. Three Weeks of Terror: The 1999 London Nail Bombings | Ep. 246
A busy Saturday afternoon in Brixton. Market stalls are buzzing, Electric Avenue is filling with shoppers, and a black sports bag is left quietly on the pavement. At first, it was nothing out of the ordinary. Something forgotten and seemingly harmless. People even joked about it, but inside that bag was a nail bomb, ticking down in the middle of one of South London’s most crowded communities. Within minutes, curiosity turned to confusion, and confusion turned to chaos. When it detonated, the explosion tore through the market, injuring dozens and leaving lives changed forever. And this wasn’t an isolated attack. It was the first in a series of three nail bombings carried out over just three weeks, each one targeting a different community across London. In this episode of British Murders with Stuart Blues, we take a deep dive into the April 1999 London nail bombings and David Copeland’s terror campaign. We break down the timeline in forensic detail, from the moment he constructed the first device in his Hampshire bedsit, to the series of split-second decisions made by members of the public who unknowingly handled the bomb. This is a case filled with chilling near-misses, human instinct, and moments that, in hindsight, could have made the outcome even more devastating. We also explore the aftermath of the explosion, the subsequent attacks in Spitalfields and Soho, the severity of the injuries - including the deaths of Andrea Dykes, John Light and Nik Moore - and the emotional accounts from those caught in the blast. Alongside this, we examine the early stages of the investigation, including the challenges faced by the Metropolitan Police, the role of CCTV footage, and the growing realisation that this was part of something far more calculated. This is a story about timing, chance, extreme political views, and the terrifying reality of how an ordinary day can be shattered in seconds, marking the beginning of a campaign designed to spread fear and division across the capital.Exclusive content:Patreon - Ad Free, Early Access, Exclusive EpisodesFollow the show:British Murders with Stuart BluesDisclaimer:The case discussed in this podcast episode is real and represents the worst day in many people's lives.
