    My 20-Year Safari with Dad’s Alzheimer’s

My 20-Year Safari with Dad’s Alzheimer’s    Lori La Bey talks with Steve Kosareff, a Los Angeles-based author and a passionate advocate for Alzheimer’s awareness and caregiver support. For twenty years, Steve and his family navigated the complex, emotional, and exhausting terrain of caring for his father, John, who lived with a rare, long-term form of Alzheimer’s disease. This deep personal experience inspired his newly released memoir, Something Like That: My 20-Year Safari with Dad’s Alzheimer’s, available on Amazon at https://a.co/d/0gDMLXJD. Drawing from two decades of firsthand observation, Steve writes with a unique blend of raw honesty, practical insight, and healing humor. His mission is to break the isolation felt by millions of unpaid family caregivers and provide a voice for those facing the prolonged realities of dementia. As a local speaker and media guest, Steve offers families actionable advice on pacing themselves for the caregiving marathon, protecting their own mental health, and finding unexpected moments of joy amid crisis. Book Summary Big-rig truck driver John Kosareff began misplacing his keys in 1997. He soon graduated to making dangerous turns with the family car into oncoming traffic and getting lost in a mental fog, driving miles from home. Before long, he no longer recognized Susan, the wife he loved for fifty years, who was abruptly woken one morning by John choking her. Despite the threat to her life, Susan continued to care for John at their home. She also refused to acknowledge her husband’s Alzheimer’s and failed to address her own well-being. Instead, twelve years after John’s disease began and due to the stress of being her husband’s caregiver, Susan’s life came to an abrupt end when she suffered a massive heart attack. The responsibility of taking care of John, Susan’s death and funeral, and all the attendant financial affairs that followed would now be up to their children. Were they up to the challenge? Author Steve Kosareff (Satin Pumps: The Moonlit Murder That Mesmerized The Nation) recalls the tragic, and even at times, humorous, story of his father’s twenty years with the rare long-term disease as he navigates the Alzheimer’s care maze. Kosareff moves back and forth in time over six decades as his family lived in their home, as he revisits the chain of events his father’s Alzheimer’s set in motion and how he and his sisters responded. Something Like That is both a cautionary tale from an Alzheimer’s caregiver and a personal account of the emotional, financial, and physical toll the disease took on the author’s family. Learn: How many families are navigating a Long-Term Diagnosis. The realities of dementia care. The cost of caregiving. Learn about some of the unforeseen events that drain caregivers. Finding joy in crisis. Why getting legal paperwork in order is critical.   Alzheimer’s Speaks Blog Post https://alzheimersspeaks.com/my-20-year-safari-with-dads-alzheimers/ Watch the Video Interview Below https://youtu.be/aJSfn36GSrw?si=RtYTnsVkCi2GpwWA Listen and Subscribe to Alzheimer’s Speaks Podcast on Apple  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/my-20-year-safari-with-dads-alzheimers/id986940432?i=1000783968303 Listen and Subscribe to the Alzheimer’s Speaks Podcast on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/episode/7eKSIHjYexVAscVAs4UQZG Other Podcasts https://pod.link/986940432 Dementia Map https://dementiamap.com/events/#!event/2026/8/11/my-20-year-safari-with-dad-8217-s-alzheimer-8217-s    Contact Steve Kosareff Purchase The Book  SOMETHING LIKE THAT on Amazon https://a.co/d/0gDMLXJD   On Amazon, listeners can also find a story summary there; read the first nine chapters for free; purchase and post reviews (which I encourage as long as they are constructive and help other Alzheimer’s families find the book). When the Caregiver Becomes the Predator: One Son's Fight to Uncover the Truth

When the Caregiver Becomes the Predator: One Son's Fight to Uncover the Truth #FinancialAbuse #CaregiverTips #ProtectYourFamily Lori La Bey talks with Charles Wallace, who goes by Chip, about the financial abuse by a caregiver who stole nearly $1 million from his mother with dementia over four years. He hopes this will help other families prevent their loved ones' life savings from being stolen. Chip leveraged his 15-year career in banking and finance and taught himself forensic investigation to uncover the loss. He wrote the book  The Caregiver's Game to help other families from falling victim to financial abuse. Learn: How Charles’ mother was taken advantage of and financially abused Get your paperwork in order long before you need it, as it might be too late at that point, and most likely, far more expensive. Power of Attorney (POA) Healthcare Directive A Will or Trust Use a specialist to coordinate your paperwork, like an Elder law Attorney. Don’t turn everything over to someone else without actively monitoring things Keep your connections to important contacts so they know you are the one in control, and the caregiver is an employee only, not one in charge of the finances and medical decisions. OPEN MIC Exposes The Truth About Repetitive Phone Calls & A Solution

OPEN MIC  Exposes The Truth About Repetitive Phone Calls & A Solution Today, Kirstin Thomas, Co-founder of KindredMind, joins our host, Lori La Bey, to share their new technology leveraging AI to reduce caregiver stress and increase the comfort of a person living with dementia. If you are caring for a loved one living with dementia, you most likely have dealt with repetitive behavior at one time or another. Repeated phone calls are one of the things we hear from families constantly, which causes them great stress and guilt. Not having the time to answer and respond to a loved one’s calls or not knowing how to calm them down and remove the anxiety they are feeling over what they keep asking over and over again. Well, it just gets overwhelming. Yet what we don’t discuss much is what’s behind the need for these repetitive calls. Today, Kirstin will give us some great insights as to the “whys” and a solution, KindredMind, that she created due to her own experience caring for her mother, who would sometimes call her 10 times before lunch.   Alzheimer’s Speaks Blog Post https://alzheimersspeaks.com/open-mic-exposes-the-truth-about-repetitive-phone-calls-a-solution/ Watch the Video Interview Below https://youtu.be/3EfyuAjKY_M Listen and Subscribe to Alzheimer’s Speaks on Apple Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/open-mic-exposes-the-truth-about-repetitive-phone/id986940432?i=1000767310069 Listen and Subscribe to Alzheimer’s Speaks on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/episode/2RKaTt5IcDhgASIpg2OweS?si=asvKyiMNS5uq9VLzekGV5A Other Podcasts https://pod.link/986940432 Dementia Map https://dementiamap.com/your-loved-one-keeps-calling-the-truth-about-why-repetitive-dementia-phone-calls/   OPEN MICs on Alzheimer's Speaks podcast's mission is to shift dementia care from crisis to comfort around the world, one episode at a time.  We love raising all voices and delivering sound news, not just sound bites!  We invite you to tell us how you are improving dementia care on our next OPEN MIC.  We just ask all parties to hold to have a respectful conversation. Awakenings In Real Life with Dan Cohen

Awakenings In Real Life with Dan Cohen #Awakenings #ClaritywithDementia #Lucidity  Lori La Bey talks with Dan Cohen, a dynamic entrepreneur with over twenty-five years of experience and a deep passion for brand building. Dan is recognized for his strategic approach and ability to foster strong, lasting relationships. With the release of his book, Awakenings In Real Life, he tells the story of his dad’s awakening from his dementia. When his father awoke, it woke Dan up too. Dan also hosts a podcast with the same name. After Dan’s family experienced his dad's awakening from dementia in 2015, Dan felt that he had to share this experience with the world. Dan quickly posted an article that has been read by hundreds of thousands of families and caregivers who were dealing with Alzheimer's / Dementia and searching for hope. Dan’s father passed away in 2016, but his awakening stayed with him. It became the spark that ignited his own awakening, which turned into the book “Awakenings In Real Life”. In the book, Dan draws on a lifetime of lessons from his father’s humor, toughness, and compassion, sharing family stories of love, inspiration, and hope. Dan started the “Awakenings In Real Life” podcast, which tells inspiring stories of transformation, meaning, and hope. While people typically think of an Awakening as a “Getting Up” or “Spiritual” or “Religious” in nature, an “Awakening” is also an awareness, recognition, or realization of something. Dan Cohen shares stories of people awakening and then triumphing over bullying, addiction, disability, illness, trauma, loss, near-death experiences, and more. Learn: Dan describes an awakening. How long did Dan’s Dad's awakening last? Did Dan’s Father share any messages while he was awake? What was Dan’s role in caring for his dad? What did Dan learn during this caring experience? Why did Dan write the book Awakenings In Real Life? What is the book about? Why did Dan start a podcast, and what is it about? How Do You Find Yourself Again After Identity Loss, Trauma, and Caregiving?

How Do You Find Yourself Again After Identity Loss, Trauma, and Caregiving? #Grief #Loss #LifeBalance #Selfcare Suzy McNamara is an author and speaker who gives a voice to various forms of grief and loss that so often go unnamed and are unaddressed. Suzy wrote the book, The Silkworm, the Magician, and the Sister Tree, a deeply personal and human exploration of caregiving, grief, enduring love, and health & wellness. In 2024, Suzy lost her husband of 37 years, Bob McNamara, to Posterior Cortical Atrophy, an aggressive form of early-onset Alzheimer’s, after caring for him at home for five years. Months earlier, her sister and lifelong best friend, Elizabeth Muslin, died from Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. These overlapping losses shape her perspective and inform her writing. Suzy’s work offers particular insight into early-onset Alzheimer’s, where illness dismantles identity during years when marriages, careers, friendships, and family life are often at their most active. She writes honestly about the daily realities of caregiving, including isolation, exhaustion, and the quiet labor of preserving dignity, countering shame, emotional wellness, and holding onto meaning amid uncertainty. Suzy believes grief is a lonely sport and survival depends on community, shared language, and the courage to name what is often left unsaid. Grounded in sustaining faith practices, she writes to walk alongside readers as they navigate their own losses. Suzy continues to find meaning through her lifelong love of books, movies, and music, interests she once shared with her husband and sister and now shares with her children and the wider community she has built. Learn: What identity loss actually feels. How can a person find themselves again after years of being in survival mode? Did writing The Silkworm, the Magician, and the Sister Tree help Suzy understand her own memory, grief, and healing? How can prolonged stress, caregiving, and unresolved grief affect a person’s sense of self over time? Get a couple of tips if you are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or another condition, and you feel like you are disappearing on this caring journey.   Alzheimer’s Speaks Blog https://alzheimersspeaks.com/how-do-you-find-yourself-again-after-identity-loss-trauma-and-caregiving/   Watch the Video Interview Below https://youtu.be/1iGgNbYlbEY   Listen and Subscribe to Alzheimer’s Speaks on Apple Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-do-you-find-yourself-again-after-identity-loss/id986940432?i=1000760360523   Listen and Subscribe to Alzheimer’s Speaks on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/episode/3gvhOd0O2mz3rOXOSFfCt7   Other Podcasts https://pod.link/986940432   Dementia Map https://dementiamap.com/events/#!event/2026/4/9/how-do-you-find-yourself-again-after-identity-loss-trauma-and-caregiving   Contact Suzy McNamara   Website    https://suzymcnamara.com LinkedIn    https://www.linkedin.com/in/suzymcnamara Facebook   https://www.facebook.com/suzy.mcnamara Instagram   https://www.facebook.com/suzy.mcnamara   Contact Lori La Bey of Alzheimer’s Speaks Contact Lori La Bey with questions or branding needs at https://www.alzheimersspeaks.com/ Alzheimer's Speaks shifts dementia care from crisis to comfort around the world, one episode at a time, by raising all voices and delivering sound news, not just sound bites, since 2011.
