When the Caregiver Becomes the Predator: One Son's Fight to Uncover the Truth
When the Caregiver Becomes the Predator: One Son's Fight to Uncover the Truth #FinancialAbuse #CaregiverTips #ProtectYourFamily Lori La Bey talks with Charles Wallace, who goes by Chip, about the financial abuse by a caregiver who stole nearly $1 million from his mother with dementia over four years. He hopes this will help other families prevent their loved ones' life savings from being stolen. Chip leveraged his 15-year career in banking and finance and taught himself forensic investigation to uncover the loss. He wrote the book The Caregiver's Game to help other families from falling victim to financial abuse. Learn: How Charles’ mother was taken advantage of and financially abused Get your paperwork in order long before you need it, as it might be too late at that point, and most likely, far more expensive. Power of Attorney (POA) Healthcare Directive A Will or Trust Use a specialist to coordinate your paperwork, like an Elder law Attorney. Don’t turn everything over to someone else without actively monitoring things Keep your connections to important contacts so they know you are the one in control, and the caregiver is an employee only, not one in charge of the finances and medical decisions. OPEN MIC Exposes The Truth About Repetitive Phone Calls & A Solution
OPEN MIC Exposes The Truth About Repetitive Phone Calls & A Solution Today, Kirstin Thomas, Co-founder of KindredMind, joins our host, Lori La Bey, to share their new technology leveraging AI to reduce caregiver stress and increase the comfort of a person living with dementia. If you are caring for a loved one living with dementia, you most likely have dealt with repetitive behavior at one time or another. Repeated phone calls are one of the things we hear from families constantly, which causes them great stress and guilt. Not having the time to answer and respond to a loved one’s calls or not knowing how to calm them down and remove the anxiety they are feeling over what they keep asking over and over again. Well, it just gets overwhelming. Yet what we don’t discuss much is what’s behind the need for these repetitive calls. Today, Kirstin will give us some great insights as to the “whys” and a solution, KindredMind, that she created due to her own experience caring for her mother, who would sometimes call her 10 times before lunch. Awakenings In Real Life with Dan Cohen
Awakenings In Real Life with Dan Cohen #Awakenings #ClaritywithDementia #Lucidity Lori La Bey talks with Dan Cohen, a dynamic entrepreneur with over twenty-five years of experience and a deep passion for brand building. Dan is recognized for his strategic approach and ability to foster strong, lasting relationships. With the release of his book, Awakenings In Real Life, he tells the story of his dad’s awakening from his dementia. When his father awoke, it woke Dan up too. Dan also hosts a podcast with the same name. After Dan’s family experienced his dad's awakening from dementia in 2015, Dan felt that he had to share this experience with the world. Dan quickly posted an article that has been read by hundreds of thousands of families and caregivers who were dealing with Alzheimer's / Dementia and searching for hope. Dan’s father passed away in 2016, but his awakening stayed with him. It became the spark that ignited his own awakening, which turned into the book “Awakenings In Real Life”. In the book, Dan draws on a lifetime of lessons from his father’s humor, toughness, and compassion, sharing family stories of love, inspiration, and hope. Dan started the “Awakenings In Real Life” podcast, which tells inspiring stories of transformation, meaning, and hope. While people typically think of an Awakening as a “Getting Up” or “Spiritual” or “Religious” in nature, an “Awakening” is also an awareness, recognition, or realization of something. Dan Cohen shares stories of people awakening and then triumphing over bullying, addiction, disability, illness, trauma, loss, near-death experiences, and more. Learn: Dan describes an awakening. How long did Dan’s Dad's awakening last? Did Dan’s Father share any messages while he was awake? What was Dan’s role in caring for his dad? What did Dan learn during this caring experience? Why did Dan write the book Awakenings In Real Life? What is the book about? Why did Dan start a podcast, and what is it about? Final tip from Dan. How Do You Find Yourself Again After Identity Loss, Trauma, and Caregiving?
How Do You Find Yourself Again After Identity Loss, Trauma, and Caregiving? #Grief #Loss #LifeBalance #Selfcare Suzy McNamara is an author and speaker who gives a voice to various forms of grief and loss that so often go unnamed and are unaddressed. Suzy wrote the book, The Silkworm, the Magician, and the Sister Tree, a deeply personal and human exploration of caregiving, grief, enduring love, and health & wellness. In 2024, Suzy lost her husband of 37 years, Bob McNamara, to Posterior Cortical Atrophy, an aggressive form of early-onset Alzheimer’s, after caring for him at home for five years. Months earlier, her sister and lifelong best friend, Elizabeth Muslin, died from Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. These overlapping losses shape her perspective and inform her writing. Suzy’s work offers particular insight into early-onset Alzheimer’s, where illness dismantles identity during years when marriages, careers, friendships, and family life are often at their most active. She writes honestly about the daily realities of caregiving, including isolation, exhaustion, and the quiet labor of preserving dignity, countering shame, emotional wellness, and holding onto meaning amid uncertainty. Suzy believes grief is a lonely sport and survival depends on community, shared language, and the courage to name what is often left unsaid. Grounded in sustaining faith practices, she writes to walk alongside readers as they navigate their own losses. Suzy continues to find meaning through her lifelong love of books, movies, and music, interests she once shared with her husband and sister and now shares with her children and the wider community she has built. Learn: What identity loss actually feels. How can a person find themselves again after years of being in survival mode? Did writing The Silkworm, the Magician, and the Sister Tree help Suzy understand her own memory, grief, and healing? How can prolonged stress, caregiving, and unresolved grief affect a person’s sense of self over time? Get a couple of tips if you are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or another condition, and you feel like you are disappearing on this caring journey. Pure Unlimited Love – Science Meets Spirit with Stephen G. Post, PhD
Pure Unlimited Love – Science Meets Spirit with Stephen G. Post, PhD Lori La Bey talks with Stephen G. Post, who was a guest with us back in 2022 when we did a program on deeply forgetful people. For those of you unfamiliar with Stephen, he is renowned around the world for his work on the effects of love, kindness, bioethics, and dementia. This is apparent from the foreword of his new book, which was written by His Holiness the Dalai Lama! In his newest book, Pure Unlimited Love: Science and the Seven Paths to Inner Peace, Dr. Post invites readers to experience love not as sentiment, but as the very structure of consciousness—the pulse that connects all living beings. In this wide-ranging conversation, he reflects on what he calls the “One Mind,” shares stories from his life and research, and explores how living through love can transform not only individuals, but the world itself. For more than four decades, Dr. Stephen G. Post has been exploring one of humanity’s oldest and most profound questions: What is love, really? Dr Post is recognized as a pioneering medical researcher, philosopher and is the founder of the Institute for Research on Unlimited Love. Dr. Post has bridged the worlds of science and spirituality, working with leading universities and faith traditions to uncover how compassion, kindness, and purpose shape our health and collective well-being. Stephen G. Post is the Director of the Center for Medical Humanities, Compassionate Care & Bioethics at Stony Brook University, which is ranked #7 in the 2025 Best Bioethics/Medical Ethics Master’s Degree Programs in the U.S. www.stonybrook.edu/bioethics What people are saying about Stephen’s latest book, Pure Unlimited Love – Science and the Seven Paths to Inner Peace. “What an engaging and inspiring read! Building on his earlier writing on the many forms that love can take, Dr. Post presents readers with seven pathways toward pure unlimited love. Each pathway is a mantra, one designed not only to help readers tap into this universal energy of love, but also to radiate this love outward toward others. In this exciting and creative book, Dr. Post skillfully weaves decades of research with dozens of personal stories, along with well-grounded, practical suggestions. A triumph!” --Julie J. Exline, Ph. D., Research Director, Division of Perceptual Studies and Bonner-Lowry Chair of Psychiatry and Neuro-behavioral Sciences, University of Virginia Learn Why does understanding the science of love matter? About The Seven Paths to Inner Peace May You Give and Glow. Generosity activates what scientists call the helper’s high—endorphins that uplift our mood and strengthen the immune system. May You Heal with Kindness. Compassionate behavior reduces stress hormones and fosters resilience. It’s literally healing. May You Follow Your Callings. Each of us has a vocation that resonates with the universe’s intelligence. Living that purpose is living in love. May You Raise Kind Children. Empathy is learned through example; parents who model compassion cultivate it in the next generation. May You Know the One Mind. All consciousness is interconnected; when we quiet our ego, we tune into that shared awareness. May You Cherish Nature. The natural world reflects love’s harmony—time in nature restores us to balance. May You Honor Freedom. True freedom is alignment with truth and compassion. It is the liberty of the soul. 7 Pillars of Successful Caregiving with Eboni Green
Lori La Bey talks with Eboni Green, who brings years of hands-on experience in caregiving education. With her background in healthcare, she's passionate about bridging the gap between caregivers and healthcare professionals, creating content that resonates on both personal and professional levels. She is the founder of Caregiver Support Services. Learn: 1. The 7 Pillars to Being a Successful Caregiver Selfcare Empathy Empowerment Kindness Patience Communication Awareness Active Listening 2. Caregiver Courses 3. Resources Dementia Caregiving: Challenges and Success Lori and Eboni discuss the challenges of caregiving for individuals with dementia, and share their personal experiences. Eboni talked about the importance of understanding what success means in caregiving, as it can change throughout the journey and depends on individual goals. They also touched on the different caregiving styles and how they can sometimes clash within families. Lori emphasized the need for open communication and flexibility in caregiving approaches. 7 Pillars of Successful Caregiving Eboni shared the importance of open communication within families caring for a loved one, emphasizing the need to assign tasks based on individual comfort levels rather than assumption. She introduced the "7 Pillars of Successful Caregiving," which include self-care, empathy, empowerment, kindness, patience, communication, and active listening. Eboni also highlighted that while these concepts may seem intuitive, they often require clear definition in caregiving situations, particularly patience and kindness, to avoid disempowering the person receiving care. Self-Care and Empathy in Caregiving Dr. Green emphasized the importance of self-care, highlighting the need to prioritize and be intentional about nurturing well-being through activities such as reading, listening to music, or exercising. Lori shared her experience of creating a quiet space during her workday to manage anxiety and stress. Eboni explained empathy in caregiving as understanding a person's diagnosis and unmet needs while empowering them to maintain independence, contrasting it with sympathy, which can lead to dependency. Both agreed on the significance of empowering clients or loved ones to maintain their ability to function as independently as possible. Caregiving Patience and Communication Awareness Eboni and Lori talked about the importance of meeting unmet needs in caregiving while respecting the person's autonomy. They emphasized the value of kindness, simplicity, and patience in caregiving, noting that patience should be balanced to avoid inaction. Eboni also highlighted the significance of communication awareness, particularly in observing body language to better understand the needs of individuals with cognitive or memory loss. Enhancing Caregiving Through Communication Dr. Eboni Green and Lori discussed the importance of effective communication and active listening in caregiving, the need for intentionality, and awareness of one's own body language. They highlighted the value of sharing knowledge and insights within care teams to improve consistency and teamwork. The conversation also touched on the challenges of high turnover rates and lack of mentoring in healthcare, which can affect the quality of care and the well-being of both caregivers and patients. Caregiver Action Plans: Essential Steps Eboni Green discussed the importance of caregiver action plans, particularly for new caregivers and those with a caregiving team. She shared a six-step process on the Caregiver Support Services site, which includes starting with self-care and gathering necessary paperwork. Eboni emphasized the need for updated plans, sharing her own experience of being unprepared when her grandmother needed care after a hospital stay. Lori agreed on the importance of having a plan and warned against becoming too focused on planning at the expense of being present with the person receiving care. Both agreed that plans should be flexible and updated as circumstances change. Caregiver Support Tools and Resources Dr. Eboni Green wrapped up discussing her caregiver support website, which offers tools like a six-step action plan, a wellness U-Model with nine components, and training resources for both family and frontline caregivers. She highlighted the importance of her book's seven pillars of successful caregiving and shared insights on handling challenging situations like client anger, depression, and grief. Lori encouraged listeners to share the information and resources, emphasizing the value of community support in caregiving. They agreed to promote the content further next week and discussed potential disruptions due to solar activity.
