Turning Grief Into Hope: Erin Gallagher and The Jaywalkers Challenge
Erin Gallagher became one of Richmond's leading voices on suicide prevention after her 18-year-old son, Jay, died by suicide in 2016, with no prior diagnosis and no warning signs anyone recognized in time. On this episode of America's Healthiest City, host Will Melton sits down with Gallagher, founder of Jay Walkers, to talk about grief, stigma, and the prevention tools most families have never heard of.Gallagher walks through the year everything changed: moving her family to Richmond, leaving a corporate training job for a coffee shop just to get through the days of grief, and eventually turning her research into a nonprofit. The Jay Walkers Challenge asks teams to walk 800,000 steps each September, one for every life lost to suicide worldwide each year, while opening conversations that stigma usually keeps closed. Peer-to-peer fundraising from the challenge funds CAMS training, a suicide-specific clinical protocol, for local clinicians, with every $420 raised covering one clinician's training. The conversation also covers hope skills — a measurable, trainable framework built on goal-setting, willpower, and pathway planning that Gallagher says predicts life outcomes better than IQ or socioeconomic status. She explains why waiting for classic warning signs works like waiting for a diagnosed tumor before treating it, and why community and vulnerability matter as prevention long before anyone reaches a crisis point. If this conversation raises anything personal, the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is available by call or text, any time.Timestamps:1:41 Why Erin's family put down roots in Richmond5:07 2016: the year Jay died6:19 Finding steady work after loss7:07 Starting over in Richmond9:16 This Is My Brave and the leap to Jay Walkers10:06 Channel RVA break11:10 Jay's story13:53 The Jay Walkers Challenge 17:10 Funding CAMS clinician training18:08 The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline19:19 Why waiting for warning signs isn't enough24:33 Stigma, vulnerability, and connection30:04 Hope skills 33:44 Jaywalkers.org and year-round resources36:47 How to join the Jaywalkers ChallengeResources & Links:Jaywalkers Challenge: https://www.jay-walkers.org/988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: call or text 988America's Healthiest City: https://americashealthiestcity.comChannel RVA: https://channelrva.comCredits:Host: Will MeltonGuest: Erin Gallagher, founder of Jay WalkersA Channel RVA productionNew to the show?
