Catching up to the Bundesliga - hype or possibility?
Can Baltic football leagues ever catch up with the Bundesliga - not financially, but in fan engagement, digital strategy and audience growth? In this episode of the Baltic Football Podcast, we look at what clubs in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia can learn from the Bundesliga’s digital ecosystem. The discussion moves from influencers such as Speed and KSI to the harder question of whether football clubs can turn online followers into real fans, ticket buyers, app users and engaged communities. We also discuss the difference between social media reach and audience ownership, why “likes” are not the same as people in the stands, and how Baltic clubs could use apps, ticketing, brand partnerships, music, fashion, fantasy football and local identity to build stronger football cultures.Topics include the Bundesliga’s digital engagement model, the Virsliga app, Blocksport, Kaunas Žalgiris, Riga FC music collaborations, FC Como, Wrexham, Hashtag FC, Dorking FC, fan data, club apps, network effects and the future of Baltic football.(00:02:10) Influencers, global audiences and football’s digital opportunity(00:07:31) Exposure, audience ownership and why likes are not enough(00:12:16) From social media to matchday: ticketing, sponsors and fan journeys(00:16:28) Brand ecosystems, club culture and Baltic football partnerships(00:22:08) Apps, platforms and the future of digital fan engagementSpecial ‘thank you’ to Blocksport.io for providing insight into behind the scenes of how their app setup works and for sharing some usage data! Pitchside: Who can keep up? Pressure builds across the Baltics
The early Baltic football season has already thrown up its first big questions: who can keep pace at the top, and which clubs are already being dragged into trouble? In this episode of Pitchside with Harry and Tony, the focus is on momentum, pressure and early warning signs across Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. RFS are still leading in Latvia, but Auda have shown they can be got at. Riga FC are finding goals, Daugavpils are climbing, and the bottom of the Virsliga table is beginning to look uncomfortable for several sides. In Lithuania’s Toplyga, Kauno Žalgiris remain the side everyone is chasing, but TransINVEST’s shock win has opened up the conversation. Meanwhile, Žalgiris Vilnius and Šiauliai have already made coaching changes, and FK Riteriai’s financial crisis raises a bigger question about whether the club can survive the season. In Estonia, the title race is tight, with Paide, Nõmme Kalju and Levadia all setting the pace. But Flora’s slow start, Levadia’s derby statement, and the early relegation picture suggest the Premium Liiga could be much less predictable than expected.Players to keep an eye on include Josué Vergara, Iago Siqueira, Leo Ribeiro, Amin Benchaib and Boubacar Tambedou.(00:00:20) Latvia: RFS beaten, Auda rising and Riga FC chasing(00:02:58) Virsliga table picture: bottom-half struggles and Daugavpils’ turnaround(00:08:34) Lithuania: Kauno Žalgiris lead the way, but TransINVEST make a statement(00:10:54) Toplyga pressure points: coaching changes, European race and Riteriai’s crisis(00:20:45) Estonia: Paide, Nõmme Kalju and Levadia in a tight title race(00:23:36) Flora’s difficult start and the Premium Liiga relegation picture(00:27:15) Levadia’s Boubacar Tambedou and the key result of the Estonian roundFor latest football news and to keep up to date with current developments, visit www.balticfootballnews.com. Pitchside: Kauno Žalgiris set the tone as Toplyga begins
Welcome to Pitchside - a new podcast segment with Baltic Football News' journalist Harry Brown and former FK Auda and Valmiera FC goalkeeping coach Tony McMullen! For a closer look at Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian football, join Tony and Harry Pitchside! This week is Lithuania-heavy because the Toplyga is the first of the three Baltic leagues to kick off. The headline is Kauno Žalgiris lifting the Lithuanian Super Cup - and then the wider question of whether this club is built to stay at the top and if their stadium, squad depth and support to make success sustainable? And then there’s also the post-match controversy: flares inside the arena, heavy smoke, and an evacuation, and a proper discussion about the balance between atmosphere, culture and basic safety.Plus, Pitchside’s new weekly picks:• Result of the Round: Džiugas Telšiai shocking Žalgiris Vilnius 3–2 away, capped by a late stoppage-time winner.• Player of the Round: Denis Bunchakov - goal, duels, recoveries, and a very specific “old-school Lampard” comparison. And a quick Round 1 wrap: Panevėžys 0-0 Sūduva, Hegelmann’s new era starting with defeat, TransINVEST letting a two-goal advantage slip, and Kaunas needing late goals to get past 10-man Riteriai.(00:00:02) Super Cup + Toplyga kickoff(00:08:30) Early favourites(00:11:10) Livonia Cup (Flora vs Riga FC)(00:13:09) Reading preseason form(00:26:44) ClosingFor up-to-date football news from Toplyga, Virsliga and Premium liiga, visit www.balticfootballnews.com and follow us on social media!#latvia #lithuania #estonia #zalgiris #vilnius #riga #tallinn #toplyga #virsliga #premiumliiga

We Started a Football News Website - Here’s What Actually Happened
One year ago, we launched Baltic Football News with a simple idea: to open up Latvian, Lithuanian, and Estonian football to international audiences - properly, consistently, and with respect for the game. What followed was... not really all we expected it was going to be.In this special episode, we look back candidly at the first year of running a football news portal from scratch. We talk about what we underestimated, what nearly broke the project, and what made it worth continuing. From writing over a thousand articles with no pay, to learning the hard way how much time “just one article” really takes; from language barriers and access issues, to media accreditation, networking, and unexpected moments at Wembley and beyond. We discuss:-Why writing articles is orders of magnitude harder than running social media-The hidden costs of volunteer journalism and passion projects-What happens when there’s too much football but no one available to cover it, and vice versa-Why some in-depth articles flop while accidental stories explode-Mistakes, rumours, and the pressure of being taken seriously as a news outlet-The tension between clicks, credibility, and long-term sustainability-What we would do differently if we were starting again todayJoin Janis and Dmitrijs for an honest post-mortem of a year spent trying to build something meaningful in a niche corner of football, and a conversation we wish we had heard before starting. If you’re thinking of launching a football website, a news platform, or any passion-driven media project, this episode is for you.#football #soccer #news #latvia #lithuania #estonia #lessonslearned

The Dodgy Governance Index: GW6 update
Recent weeks kicked up some alarming news about the President of the Estonian FA allegedly blacklisting referees he doesn't like and the owners of FK Riteriai allegedly embezzling funds intended for running of the club. As we unpack all of this and catch up on the football side of things across the A Lyga, Virslīga and the Premium liiga, these developments also promted us to take a closer look at the quality of governance in football in the Baltics. Europa league: Dynamo Kyiv vs RFS preview (feat. Andrew Todos)
The Europa league stage is set to conclude with an intriguing clash between two teams that know one another quite well - FC RFS and FC Dynamo Kyiv. While both teams got some results in their previous match (RFS beating Ajax 1-0 and Dynamo drawing Galatasaray 3-3) both are also eliminated and have nothing but respect and UEFA money and coefficient points to play for. For this final episode of this unexpectedly, yet delightfully long series on next opponents of Latvian clubs in Europe which started last summer (!), we sit down with a British-Ukrainian sports journalist Andrew Todos, who also hosts the podcast Zorya Londonsk, to discuss the upcoming Dynamo Kyiv fixture in Hamburg on January 30, 2025. On January 23, 2025, FC RFS will take on Dutch giants AFC Ajax in the Europa League at the Daugava Stadium, with over 2,500 Ajax supporters expected to travel to Riga. As anticipation builds, we explore what the Latvian champions and their fans can expect from this formidable Ajax side. To learn more, we interviewed Thijs Zwagerman - journalist for the ESPN Netherlands and host of the ‘Het Sportpaleis’ podcast. Europa league, Wroclaw sorrows, and Kosovo football (feat. Eljon Kastrati)
We continue to reflect on how Latvian clubs performed in the European competitions, where three Riga teams played against clubs from Norway, Poland, and Northern Ireland: Bodo/Glimt, Śląsk Wrocław, and Cliftonville. One game won, one game lost, and one game broke our hearts... We then look ahead to the upcoming Europa league QR3 match between FC RFS and Andorran champions UE Santa Coloma, and Frank interviews Eljon Kastrati of Kosovo Football (@FootballKosovo) about FK Auda's Conference League QR3 opponents - FC Drita (which means "light" in Albanian). Please remember to share your thoughts and predictions, like the podcast and join in the conversation in the comments! Finally, our friends at MANSCAPED came up with a solution for all of you, like Dmitrijs, with a manly bush adorning their faces! The days of using the same trimmer for your face and your private parts are officially over thanks to the Beard & Balls Bundle featuring The Lawn Mower® 5.0 and The Beard Hedger®— a trimmer for the money maker, and another for the boys downstairs. The curse is broken! Champions League QR2 and Bodo/Glimt awaits!
European cup qualification rounds 1 are behind us and the highlight is RFS breaking the 15-year long curse of Latvian clubs not progressing past QR1 of the Champions League by convincingly beating Northern Irish Champions Larne FC 7-0 on aggregate! FK Auda also made history by winning their first ever European game and by progressing through a European qualification round for the first time, beating Faroese B36 Torshavn 3-0 on aggregate. Liepaja didn't make it (unsurprisingly) and Riga FC only start their Conference League campaign from QR2. In this episode, we are first joined by Peter Cinnamond of the Kicking Match: An Irish League Podcast to reflect on RFS - Larne FC tie as well as to learn more about Auda's QR2 opponents - Northern Irish Cup winners Cliftonville FC. We are then joined by a Norwegian sports journalist - Jonas Adnan Giæver - to learn more about RFS's Champions League QR2 opponents - FK Bodø/Glimt. The Baltic Cup
Baltic Cup - contested every two years by Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia - is the second (or third) oldest international competition in the world, and the oldest one still running. Older than the FIFA World Cup by 2 years and than UEFA EUROs by 30 years, the Baltic Cup is a fascinating event that not only mirrors the histories of the three Baltic states, but also features some of the most hilarious controversies you'll find in international football. To learn more about all this, we are joined by amateur historian of Latvian football - Raimonds Kaže. Also check out Raimonds's archival project (in Latvian) here: https://kazhe.lv/futbols/ Aside from the Baltic Cup, another cool thing about the Baltics in general, and Latvia in particular, are the endless white sand beaches (Latvia has 240km of sandy beaches!). When you hit that beach, make sure to look your best with products from our friends at manscaped.com. In this episode, Dmitrijs and Nick sit down to talk about his visit, what he thought of Latvian and regional football, and about the idea of cross-border leagues in general and the proposed Baltic League in particular!Nick's article in The Guardian 'Baltic League could be pioneer for cross-border football in Europe' (17 Feb 2024): https://www.theguardian.com/football/2024/feb/17/baltic-league-could-be-pioneer-for-cross-border-football-in-europe
