  1. 82

    Big Mon

This arrangement of Big Mon mixes melodic, Scruggs, and single-string approaches.

  2. 81

    Salt Spring

I first heard this lovely tune a few weeks ago in a jam session and it showed up twice in other sessions. Hence, it was time I learned this tune. I set up a backing track and played with it until I was happy with my arrangement.

  3. 80

    Harvest Moon

    Original Cello Banjo 3-finger picking Tuning: A C# A B E

  6. 77

    Living Water

Song written by a friend of mine and recorded by our band, Robertson County Line.

  7. 76

    Jackson's Hornpipe

I posted another Tommy Jackson tune unknowingly the other day...&#34Snowflake Reel&#34. JanetB was kind enough to give me some background on the tune and add a very nice clawhammer arrangement. This led to us trading messages about a collaberation of another Jackson tune. It was a bit different for us both. Not too bad for a first time collab...she plays the cello banjo and gracefully states the melody and I come in later like an overexcited 2nd time beginner (&#39cause it&#39s what I am!) and barrel through the changes again with Janet&#39s accompaniment. My ending is a little exaggerated, but it was good fun, and I hope to do another soon. Thanks Janet for your nice playing and your use of the garage band software.

  8. 75

    Andantino in G Major

Andantino in G Major, composed by Ferdinando Carulli and published in 1825. Performed on guitar, banjo and bass banjo. &#34Classical&#34 parlor guitar based on 19th century design by the La Patrie Guitar Company. Early Banjo based on the Joel Sweeney banjo circa 1840, built by James Hartel. Fretless Bass Banjo by Goldtone

  9. 74

    Cold and Frosty Morn

I present four distinct treatments of this tune which hopefully hang together as some kind of cohesive whole in the end. The great Travis Wright finishes it off on clawhammer banjo.

  10. 73

    Jimmy Arnold Medley (Sort Of)

A little over a month in as a second time beginner, with now a &#34playable&#34 banjo. Attempting to play some Jimmy Arnold stuff...no metronome or backing track, just went for it in the bedroom with a Tascam DP-006. After a 35 year hiatus and a nerve damaged left hand, I hope y&#39all enjoy. BTW, &#34Doc Harris&#39 Hornpipe is a hybrid of JA and a Larry McNeely vid off of YouTube.

  11. 72

    Wayfaring Stranger

American Traditional. Earliest known documented version 1784. Performed on Gourd Banjo with Vocal. Gourd Banjo by Noah Cline.

    Sockeye

I&#39ve been messing with my Fostex MR-8HD recording machine over the past week as I had a little time. Someone asked me about the Don Reno tune Sockeye. I never really played it so I decided that would be a good song to learn and record so I could practice using the Fostex. I&#39ve had the machine for several years but could never find the time to really learn how to use it. Anyway, I had a lot of fun messing around with this tune.

Named after the Cascade mountain range, I have had the privilege to visit there many times as a resident of the Pacific NorthWest.

  27. 56

    Appalachian Rain

Just a couple of days ago I decided to learn how to play this incredibly melodic tune written by Paul Craft (as played by Ben Eldridge of The Seldom Scene), and I think I&#39ve about got it down. There are a few rough spots, but that&#39s to be expected since I&#39m not Ben Eldridge. This was played on my custom banjo with a Huber tone ring, Frank Neat neck, and Factory Floor rim. It was recorded with a Zoom H2 Handy Recorder, and was mixed and edited using Audacity.

  28. 55

I learned this from one of those Flinner, Grier, Phillips albums.

aDF#AD . . . not Foster&#39s original chords. I just played harmonies that sounded nice to me. I couldn&#39t resist using a diminished chord in the chorus.

  36. 47

    I'll Fly Away

My latest amateur, multi-track recording effort playing all of the bluegrass instruments :-) I borrowed most of the banjo lead from Tony Trischka&#39s &#34All Star Bluegrass Jam Along Book&#34 for banjo. It&#39s a nice jam along book with a practice CD. The banjo is a nice hobby and great therapy!
