The Future of Radiation Oncology and Pancreatic Cancer
Pancreatic cancer has been a lethal malignancy for too long. Available cytotoxic therapies for advanced disease are modestly effective with a 5-year survival rate, less than 15%, but new modalities using ablative radiation therapy holds promise in improving outcomes. Reports of ablative radiation therapy for pancreatic cancer using the 0.35 Tesla, MR Linac have resulted in promising local control and overall survival with no severe toxicity in patients with locally advanced pancreatic cancer despite radio-sensitive organs adjacent to the target volumes. Global testing has found a wide variation in treatment planning protocols for pancreatic tumors with MR-guided SBRT on a 0.35 Tesla MR-Linac. Lung Cancer Awareness Month: Vital Importance of Lung Cancer Screenings
Lung cancer has shown a decrease in incidence and mortality in recent decades; however, it remains one of the cancers with the highest incidence and still ranks first in cancer-related deaths in the United States. Advancements like molecular interpretation of lung cancer has substantially changed the classification and treatment of these tumors, becoming an essential component of pathologic diagnosis and oncologic therapy decisions. Through the recognition of novel biomarkers, such as epidermal growth factor receptor mutations and anaplastic lymphoma kinase translocations, it has been possible to identify subsets of patients who benefit from targeted molecular therapies. We’re encouraging patients to learn more about their lung health by offering special pricing on lung screenings through the month of November. Patients without health insurance or whose insurance does not cover the test can receive a lung screening for $35. A prescription is required. This Lung Cancer Awareness Month, stay on top of your lung health by visiting BaptistHealth.net/LungScreening or call 833-596-2473. Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia - IST, What is it?
Inappropriate sinus tachycardia, also known as IST, is a condition of elevated sinus rate unassociated with known pathological, pharmacological, or physiological causes. Its diagnosis has been, in the past, missed or at times dismissed. It does not help that its definitions in current literature are inconsistent, and professional society consensus have had limited impact. Considering its broad setting of physiology, pathology, and uncertainties, the therapy for IST remains challenging. To date high rates of symptom recurrence, treatment failure, and complications have followed many therapies. Although, not well accepted by guidelines, the main hope lies in ablation procedures. Unfortunately, the results of endocardial radiofrequency ablation have not been encouraging. Today we will explore the multiple aspects of IST and the treatment techniques surrounding it.
