INTANGIBLE FRONTIERS 3 originally premiered as RESILIENCE on Psybient.org Podcast 44 (@gagarinproject). My intention with this guest mix for Psybient.org is two-fold: to expand the horizons of what we consider "psychedelic downtempo" by exploring a wide range of adjacent and compatible styles of electronic music; and to demonstrate advanced mixing techniques in a chill out set, where many DJs just make brief transitions between tracks. This mix contains multitudes: ambient and modular dreamscapes, bucolic IDM and futuristic electro breaks, quirky nu-disco workouts, deep and organic house and trance, bubbling acid experiments, shimmering slabs of dub techno, and more than a few references to the origins of psychedelic trance culture on the beaches of South and Southeast Asia. A careful selection of harmonically compatible source material allows for long, layered transitions, sometimes with three or four tracks playing simultaneously. Ideally this creates a sort of auditory illusion where tracks meld together and time collapses, making it effortless to lose yourself in this musical microcosm. Finally, on an emotional level, this mix is often more hopeful and perhaps even inspirational, though it is not without melancholy and sadness at times, a reflection of the global zeitgeist. Basilisk pays tribute to the early millennial sound of French psytrance, techtrance, and progressive on Ybyzär 19 (@ybyzar), a guest mix commissioned by @me_diafan and broadcast on the Nantes-based @radiody10 in June 2022. This concept mix focuses on the “French touch” of psytrance, with representation by many of the major figures in the scene from 1998 to 2005. The journey begins with Gothic-industrial soundscapes, digs deep into cacophonous techtrance and pumping progressive rhythms, gathers steam with twilight full-on beats, eventually emerging into the morning light with timeless trance melodies and blissful orchestral strings. All tracks featured here were released from 1998 to 2005. Six tracks included in this mix were edited for quicker transitions, easier layering, or to fix errors in the original recordings. Basilisk explores the secret origins of the modern psychedelic techno movement on TRANSMISSIONS FROM HYPERBOREA. This mix is a cross-genre period piece set in the transitional year of 2010, when tech house, neotrance, minimal techno, and progressive psytrance collided and merged to form something vibrant and new. It was an era marked by the infiltration of underground club culture into the open air psytrance festival circuit; dance floors were awash in white noise, rapt with sizzling electric leads, and worked into a frenzy by big swinging beats. Basilisk's growing involvement in this emerging fusion was formalized by the establishment of Drumlore, a Canadian netlabel and event series organized alongside DJ Lexicon, in 2009. This, in turn, lay the groundwork for Techgnosis Records, one of the leading psychedelic techno labels of the 2020s. And so this mix also asks: what is a movement without history? Where do we find our roots? Plenty of the tracks featured in this mix are now unavailable, deleted from whatever digital download platform originally carried them, sometimes nearly vanishing without a trace. Prototypes 3 continues DJ Basilisk's retrospective exploration of classic progressive house and trance from the early years of the new millennium. Originally conceived as a vehicle for showcasing the sound of Techgnosis Records (@techgnosis-records), the label he co-founded alongside Ben Rama (@benramamusic) in 2015, this mix features ten of his personal favorites from the label's burgeoning catalog. This set was recorded live at Re:Generate, the name chosen by the Om Reunion Project to set the mood for their summer solstice gathering in 2011. I was scheduled to play on Sunday morning at the Moon Bass stage, a great little setup in a forest clearing on a beautiful piece of land in Southern Ontario. It felt like the right space and time to take a trip into the history of the psychedelic trance subculture so I mixed up a diverse assortment of old school Goa trance classics after sunrise. As always, this set was completely improvised; absolutely nothing was planned prior to stepping on stage to ready my equipment. In Exile is a special mix composed by Basilisk for Global Goa Party 2, a virtual party organized by Marsh at the Goat Ranch, a flashpoint for old school Goa trance fandom. The concept is simple enough: gather up a bunch of seasoned old school veterans and have them mix up a full night of music just as if it were some point in the not-so-distant past. The first event—for which I produced Moonshadow—landed us 1999. This time we travel back to the year 1996, smack dab in the middle of the Golden Age of Goa trance. Bill Clinton is in the White House, Boris Yeltsin is in the Kremlin, the reigning human chess champion is defeated by a computer for the first time, and tantalizing evidence of life on other worlds captures headlines around the world. I am merely 15 years old, not yet fully initiated into the world of psychedelic trance, although the groundwork is already laid by my adolescent fascination with industrial music, cyberpunk fiction, and early dial-up BBSes. One of the aims of the Global Goa Party project is to provide an experience for those of us who did not have the good fortune to attend psytrance parties back in the day—myself included! (I first heard DJ Nivoc play Goa trance in April of 1996 but had no idea what was going on at the time.) Moonshadow is a classic psytrance mix originally composed for the Global Goa Party, a virtual event conceived to “create the soundtrack for a full night (and morning) of old-school Goa trance by ten DJs from all over the world.” The rules were simple: record a mix with music that would have been heard on the dance floor in 1999. I snapped up the 12:30 to 2:00am time slot and spent weeks scouring my collection for the right stuff to hasten the journey into darkness and lunacy. Naturally, this exercise aroused great nostalgia for my own initiation into psytrance culture sometime in 1997 or 1998. This is the live recording of my set at Harvest 2006. I was opening the trance tent at 9:00 pm on the night of the festival so my intention was to get things started right, beginning with an old favourite from 1992.
