Bassed On A True Story

Bass players have a lot more to talk about than you'd think when they're not busy, "holding it down." Bassed On A True Story w/ Erek Smith talks to bassists about all things four strings, as well as focusing on their often overlooked role in the band and personal lives. Whether you're a bass connoisseur or just genuinely curious about the unsung heroes of the rhythm section, this is the podcast for you! Find me at: twitter.com/bassedpodtwitter.com/[email protected]

Linh Le (Bad Cop / Bad Cop)

Folks, this was a fun one. Linh and I talked forever about everything from her upbringing to political and social issues in music to the Mike Watt signature bass. (I still have a tab open thinking about buying it)  Check out the band at www.badcopbadcopband.com

    Mitch Paglia (Western Addiction)

Okay, look. Did I screw up the microphone situation on this episode? Yes. Can you hear my chair and water bottle squeaking the whole time. Yes you can. BUT I had such a great convo with Mitch Paglia from Western Addiction that it's going up anyway because it's that fun and cool and good. We talk gear, we talk touring, we talk East Bay, making money, imperfections, punk, it's all there. Mitch is a great funny guy and Western Addiction is a great band please go check them out. https://westernaddiction.bandcamp.com/ https://fatwreck.com/collections/western-addiction?view=artist

    Mike Fenton (Spiritual Cramp)

Folks, I'm back with the regular episodes and this week I'm talking to one of my favorite people, Mike Fenton of Spiritual Cramp. I didn't know Mike that well before we talked but we were truly melding minds on so many topics and he's just one of the coolest bass players around. Do yourself a favor and check out Spiritual Cramp if you haven't, one of my favorite bands in the entire world.  Twitter.com/Spiritual_Cramp

Tia Vincent-Clark (Liturgy, Huh, Reservoir Dawgs)

This week Tia convinces me that playing in a cover band is okay! Tia plays in a ton of bands (Liturgy, Huh, Reservoir Dawgs, The Rocket Queens, Girls Of Summer, Army Of Eve) and was the bass player for one of my all time favorite punk bands, Pygmy Shrews, and she also play in cover bands! We talk about going from one world to the other, why cred doesn't mean anything, and if you love playing music you just gotta do it.

  5. 3

Jeremy Bent (Mission To Zyxx, UCB)

This week I'm airing an interview I did last year with my friend Jeremy Bent. Jeremy is primarily a comedian, but he's also a bass player who's played bass in different comedy shows and comedy bands. Jeremy is an amazingly funny dude and it was so fun to talk to him about comedy and the crossover between comedy and music, and to get his perspective as someone who plays bass as a hobby but loves it all the same.  Find Jeremy at www.missiontozyxx.space

  6. 2

Joe Lally (Coriky, The Messthetics, Fugazi)

This week I'm talking with my literal hero, Joe Lally. You might know Joe as the bass player of a little band called Fugazi. He's also got two newer great bands called The Messthetics and Coriky. I can't understate the effect that Joe has had on my life, and getting to talk to him was surreal. We talked a lot about his history, getting into music, and how music saved his life. I also ask him about the damn Stingray that I've never been able to figure out.  coriky.bandcamp.com themessthetics.bandcamp.com

    Tyler Forsythe (Gouge Away)

First episode! This week I'm talking to Tyler Forsythe from the band Gouge Away. We talk about the effect coronavirus is having on the band and music in general, his history, and being huge nerds about bass. You can find Gouge Away at: gougeawayfl.bandcamp.com
