Tuna Tournaments Are Here! Bass Still Crushing & Fluke Heating Up | Ep. 90

Episode 90 of Bay Rats & Buoys is here, and this week Captain Gaige is back aboard the boat with another up-to-date fishing report from the Long Island Sound. Filmed during the haze from the Canadian wildfire smoke drifting across the Northeast, this episode covers everything anglers need to know before heading out on the water this week. The tuna tournament season is in full swing, with offshore crews chasing giant bluefin tuna and competing in some of the biggest events of the summer. We discuss the latest tournament action, what teams are seeing offshore, and why this is one of the most exciting times of the year for big-game fishermen. Whether you’re fishing the canyons or following the action from shore, there’s no shortage of excitement happening offshore.Closer to home, Sand City Charter is still finding quality striped bass despite the summer pattern beginning to change. Captain Gaige breaks down the techniques that continue to produce both trophy fish and keeper-sized bass while explaining how the bite has evolved over the past week. If you’re wondering whether it’s still worth targeting stripers, this fishing report will help point you in the right direction. As water temperatures continue to climb, the fluke and black sea bass bite is really starting to turn on, giving anglers even more opportunities to put fresh fish in the cooler. We discuss where these fisheries are heading, what techniques are producing, and what you can expect over the next several weeks as summer fishing reaches its peak. One question continues to be on everyone’s mind: Where are the bluefish? Captain Gaige shares his thoughts on the unusually slow bluefish season, what could be contributing to their absence, and when anglers might expect to see more of these hard-fighting fish return to local waters. We also invite you to become part of something much bigger than just another fishing group by joining the Bay Rats & Buoys Fishing Club. No matter where you’re from, everyone is welcome. Our club continues to grow every month as captains, boaters, kayak anglers, surfcasters, and fishing families come together to share fishing reports, exchange local knowledge, and build lasting friendships. Our monthly club gatherings are a great opportunity to meet fellow anglers, learn new techniques, hear firsthand fishing intel, and simply enjoy being around people who share the same passion for fishing and boating.Ready to join the crew? Big Game Fishing , Big strength | Gregg Sharp on Marlin Tournaments & Arm Wresting

Episode 68 of Bay Rats & Buoys delivers one of our most unexpected and wide-ranging conversations yet as Captain Gaige sits down with Gregg Sharp—Hollywood producer, CEO of the World Series of Arm Wrestling, and a hardcore tournament angler who chases giant marlin in some of the most competitive fisheries on the planet.Broadcasting from his sun-soaked home in San Diego while the Northeast gets absolutely hammered with snow, Gregg brings serious warmth, perspective, and insight to this episode. From the jump, this conversation bridges worlds—fishing, film, combat sports, and elite competition—while uncovering the mindset required to succeed at the highest levels in any arena.Gregg dives deep into the World Series of Arm Wrestling, explaining how the sport has evolved into a global, professional competition with opportunities for both men and women. He breaks down what it really takes to get involved, from training and technique to qualifying, traveling, and competing on an international stage. Whether you’re brand new to the sport or a longtime fan, Gregg offers a behind-the-scenes look at how arm wrestling has transformed into a legitimate, structured, and highly competitive professional circuit. On the fishing side, Gregg’s passion is just as intense. As a tournament-style angler targeting big marlin, he shares what separates casual offshore fishing from high-stakes tournament competition. Preparation, teamwork, decision-making under pressure, and respect for the ocean all play a massive role—and the parallels between big-game fishing and arm wrestling are striking. Both demand discipline, strategy, and the ability to perform when everything is on the line.Throughout the episode, the conversation flows naturally between storytelling and hard-earned lessons. Gregg’s experience in Hollywood, sports production, and competitive fishing gives him a rare perspective on building brands, growing events, and staying mentally sharp in high-pressure environments. We wrap things up looking ahead to late May 2026, when plans are already in motion for Gregg to head east and fish the Long Island Sound with Bay Rats & Buoys. This episode isn’t just about fishing or arm wrestling—it’s about competition, passion, and chasing big goals, no matter the arena. If you’re into fishing, sports, or learning what it takes to compete at the top, Episode 68 is one you won’t want to miss. https://sandcitycharter.com/podcast/

Why is the Stratford Shoal the most haunted lighthouse in the Long Island Sound?

Why is the Stratford Shoal the most haunted lighthouse in the Long Island Sound? That’s how Episode 62 of Bay Rats & Buoys kicks off, and from there it only gets wilder. In this special holiday edition of the podcast, Captain Gaige dives into one of the most chilling maritime legends in our backyard — the eerie history, unexplained stories, and spine-tingling reputation of the Stratford Shoal (Middle Ground) Lighthouse. Whether you’re a boater, angler, or just someone who loves local lore, this conversation will have you looking at the Sound a little differently the next time you pass by.But the scares don’t stop with ghost stories. Captain Gaige also shares a very real, very intense firsthand experience of getting caught in a severe lightning storm while exiting Huntington Harbor. From the sudden shift in conditions to the split-second decisions every captain dreads, this story turns into a powerful reminder of how quickly things can change on the water — and why preparation, situational awareness, and respecting Mother Nature are non-negotiable.Joining the conversation is Captain Kory from Kory’s Kustoms, first mate aboard Sand City Charter and a familiar voice to Bay Rats & Buoys listeners. Kory chimes in with his own perspectives, adds some laughs, and helps round out this festive yet hard-hitting episode with real dock-talk from someone who lives and breathes the boating lifestyle. The chemistry is loose, unscripted, and exactly what Bay Rats & Buoys is all about. With just two weeks left until 2026, the countdown is officially on. Captain Gaige shares his excitement about the upcoming launch of the Bay Rats & Buoys Fishing Club, a community built for anglers and boaters who want more access, more value, and more connection. The question now is — who will step up as the first founding members? If you’ve been thinking about joining, this episode might be the push you need.Plus, Captain Gaige drops another boating app recommendation that somehow slipped through the cracks in Episode 61 — proving once again that there’s always something new to learn on the water.Don’t miss this episode. Winterization Begins: Squid Jigs, Green Crabs & Beaver Moon Tides

Welcome back to Bay Rats & Buoys — Episode 56, where the winterization process has officially begun here in the Northeast. The cold fronts are rolling in, the yards are filling up with shrink-wrapped boats, and every captain is doing that final dance of oil changes, fuel stabilizers, and flushing systems before winter takes hold. But even with the seasonal shutdown starting, the fishing is STILL electric. This week we’re talking squid jigs, green crabs, tautog, striped bass, and a ridiculous amount of bait stacked in our harbors. We’re seeing spearing, peanut bunker, and schools of squid lighting up the sonar — the harbors are alive. The Tog bite remains strong, with a steady flow of 4–8 lb fish, but no double-digit “whitechins” have hit our deck… yet. With water temps dropping and green crabs loaded in the livewell, we’re still swinging hard right into the late season. Squid fishing should take off once we finally get a break from this relentless windy weather pattern. This week brings the Beaver Moon, generating dramatic tidal swings and extreme highs and lows. The tidal coefficient is very high, and that means moving water plus murky conditions — the kind of chaos that often turns on the bass bite. And speaking of bass… we’ve got striped bass in the harbor up to 40 inches, with tons of shorts and slots crashing on the surface right alongside peanut bunker and spearing. Birds working? Follow them.➡️ Listener Challenge:Drop a comment and let us know:Where you’re watching or listening from, andHOW you consume the podcast weekly (YouTube? Spotify? We’re just one week away from our one-year anniversary, and the celebration is already building. Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe to be entered into our Anniversary Raffle—winners will be announced next week!Offshore Bite is On FireFrom the offshore canyons 100 miles out to the dragger lines just 30 miles off the beach, the bite is absolutely red hot! Tuna are crushing baits, mahi are lighting up the spread, and even swords are making their presence known. The weather has been perfect to get offshore, and anglers who made the run were rewarded with some of the best pelagic action of the season.Bonito Frenzy in the SoundCloser to home, the eastern Long Island Sound is alive with bonito, creating a frenzy for anglers willing to put in the time. Albies have also popped into the back bays and harbors, giving near-shore anglers their shot at drag-screaming action without having to burn the fuel to head offshore. These fast-moving pelagics make fall one of the most exciting times of the year to fish in our waters.Inshore Bottom Fishing & BluesIf that wasn’t enough, the bottom bite is lights out! Jumbo porgies, black sea bass, and weakfish are filling coolers across the Sound. Add in massive schools of bluefish and an endless supply of bait, and the stage is set for the striped bass fall run to kick off as soon as the nights cool down and water temps drop. Striped bass are already being landed in Montauk, and the western Sound is eagerly waiting for their shot at the big push.Community SpotlightA big shout-out to Andrew, our local champ from the first annual Bay Rats & Buoys Striped Bass Invitational, who stayed persistent and was rewarded this week with an epic bonito bite! Blues, Fluke & Tog & Hard Tails - Take Your Kid Fishing Fall 2025

Bay Rats & Buoys Podcast – Episode 50We’ve officially made it to Episode 50, and we’re only two weeks away from celebrating our one-year anniversary! That means it’s time to crank things up a notch with giveaways, fishing action, and a reminder to like, comment, and follow us to be entered into our anniversary giveaway. We want to thank all of our loyal listeners and viewers who’ve been on this ride with us since day one—your support keeps the Bay Rats & Buoys crew rolling.Fall Run in Full SwingThe fall run is heating up across Long Island Sound! Water temperatures are dropping, bass and blues are on the chew, and the excitement for blackfish (tautog) season is off the charts. While the official opener is just two weeks away, we’re already seeing keeper tog showing up in our area. Don’t forget to tune in each week for updates on regulations, limits, and the latest fishing reports. The late-season fluke bite is still hanging on until mid-October, giving anglers a shot at one last doormat before the cold sets in.Father & Son Day on the SoundThis episode is a special one—Captain Gaige takes his 12-year-old son Ethan out for a day of fishing. With the Sound as flat as a lake, Ethan got to put in some serious wheel time, honing his boat-handling and captain skills. He even learned how to use the new electronics on board, dialing in on the fish and soaking up every bit of the experience. White Gulp on chicken rigs was the ticket, and Ethan had fish on almost every drop—cocktail blues and keeper fluke kept the rods bent and the smiles wide. Nothing beats time on the water with family, and this trip was one for the memory books.Hardtail Madness & Harbor SurprisesWhile we were focused on fluke and blues, the albies showed up right in the harbor—and it was absolute chaos! Ten to twelve boats sprinted over to get in on the hardtail action. That’s fall fishing in the Northeast—one second you’re drifting fluke, the next you’re chasing speeding pods of false albacore busting bait on the surface.Don’t Miss OutThe fall season is short but sweet—get out there now while the action is hot. Fishing Through Snotty Conditions! Chef Rob and Manny Onboard | Bay Rats Ep. 49

This week on Bay Rats & Buoys, Captain Gaige is back on the boat, just three weeks away from the one-year anniversary of the podcast! After days of relentless winds stirring up the Sound, the seas finally laid down and shifted direction just in time for this recording. That break in the weather set the stage for a raw, on-the-water episode filled with fishing talk, salty banter, and plenty of laughs. The week kicked off with a surprise appearance from Manny—better known around here as “Manny from the West"  who knows best. True to his reputation, Manny rolled down the dock armed with a bag of warm bagels, hot coffee, and a case of slim Diet Cokes, fueling up the captain for what would be a wet and wild run into some snotty conditions.  Despite the sloppy seas, the energy is high on deck. Gaige dives into stories about chasing fish when the weather breaks, how wind shifts affect bait movement, and what conditions mean for the fall migration patterns we’re seeing in the Sound. With water temps cooling and the season pushing deeper into September, listeners get an insider’s view into how a seasoned charter captain adjusts strategy when the elements turn.Another guest this week is Chef Rob, who made the trip all the way up from South Carolina to spend time on the boat with Captain Gaige. While the early morning weather kept us closer to home and with a limited fishing window due to Chef Rob's departure time we still made the most of this trip!  Between the laughs, the videos, and the photo's of smaller species made larger than life, the stories flowed freely all morning.Whether you’re here for the fishing talk, the boating lifestyle, or just the salty laughs, Episode 49 has it all. Strap in, crack open a cold one (or a slim Diet Coke if you’re riding with the Captain), and join us for another ride out into the Sound with Bay Rats & Buoys. Don’t forget to like, comment, and share to get entered into our anniversary giveaway's just 3 weeks away!https://sandcitycharter.com/podcast/

Spanish Mackerel Feeding Frenzy & The Cocktail Bluefish Invasion | Bay Rats & Buoys Podcast

Spanish Mackerel Feeding Frenzy & The Cocktail Bluefish Invasion Bay Rats & Buoys Podcast This week’s episode of Bay Rats & Buoys is all about the hot action happening right now in our local waters! Captain Gaige is breaking down the lures and tackle that worked best for us this week chasing multiple inshore species. We stopped into Hi-Hook Bait & Tackle in Huntington to load up, and the gear did not disappoint. Spanish mackerel made a strong showing, and we even had them spitting up spearing as they hit the deck. These lightning-fast predators are a blast to catch, and they’ve become one of our favorite targets during this part of the season. On top of that, the cocktail bluefish invasion is in full swing across the Sound. If you’re looking for rod-bending action, these aggressive blues are stacked up and feeding hard. Just a little further east, the gator blues are chewing as well, so we’re planning our next trip to lock horns with those big toothy brutes. Looking ahead, we’re gearing up to chase false albacore (albies) and bonito on our upcoming expeditions. The fall run is heating up, and now’s the time to be on the water.Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting special guest Jo Jo Napoli — “Captain of the Kitchen” — on the boat. Not only did he help us get on the Spanish macks, but he’s also showing you how to catch and cook these tasty speedsters on his YouTube channel. Whether you want tips on finding fish or putting them on the dinner table, this is an episode you won’t want to miss.Captain Gaige also highlights a few boating products and gear upgrades that every angler should consider as we head into cooler weather. Safety, comfort, and efficiency on the water are always priorities, especially as the fall bite ramps up.And here’s the best part — you can fish with us! We’re inviting fans and followers to join us on future trips. All you have to do is comment and interact with us here on YouTube and Facebook. Every like, comment, and share also enters you into our big anniversary raffle as we count down just 4 weeks until our 1-year celebration!🎣 Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and share this week’s episode of Bay Rats & Buoys. Over 65 striped bass were tagged and released with Gray's FishTag Research to support conservation and scientific tracking of this iconic species. The excitement began Saturday morning at the Captains Meeting hosted at Whalestale Northport, where tournament shirts, rulers, Gray’s fish tags, tag applicators, and sponsor swag were distributed. Special thanks to CLiX Fueling, and shoutout to Howard and Steven for showing up in person to support the event!Sunday morning, boats lined up just north of the Huntington Lighthouse for a shotgun start. Anglers battled through a north squall with 5-foot waves that added intensity to the first two hours of fishing. The first fish was on the deck just 30 minutes into the competition!Teams captured epic footage and tagged dozens of bass — with the winning fish coming in at 46 inches, landed on a porgy chunk by Eric Huebsch, Mike & Andrew Viola!  Bay Rats & Buoys is incredibly proud to have brought the fishing community together for a cause that matters. A huge thank you to all of our sponsors, anglers, and supporters — this event wouldn’t have been possible without you. We’re already looking ahead to next year’s tournament, and the planning starts now!
