Built by Faith: Motherhood, Legacy & Leading Through Life’s Seasons
Send us a comment about the Be a Baller Podcast Episode. Thanks for support. Legacy doesn’t happen by accident, and Celeste Allen proves it with a life that’s been shaped by faith, discipline, and service. We’re talking with a mother, educator, mentor, and ministry leader with more than 45 years of experience who has helped build people, not just programs. If you’ve ever wondered whether your everyday choices matter, this conversation makes the case that they matter more than you think. We get honest about motherhood in real life: the part no one explains, the way worries shift as kids become adults, and why “it gets easier” isn’t the whole story. Celeste shares how God led her into homeschooling, why spiritual formation mattered more than simply “getting a good education,” and what it took to keep going as a single parent after losing her husband. Her parenting principles are simple but weighty: start with the Word, build Christian character, and trust God with the outcomes. We also dig into servant leadership and purpose through seasons, including how Celeste’s relationship with Christ transformed her love for people and her willingness to speak up for God. Her prayer life is practical and memorable, from written prayers to persistent intercession for her children. We close with a definition of “being a baller” that has nothing to do with status and everything to do with significance: being available, lifting others up, and strengthening people spiritually and emotionally. Dr. Moses Newsome: Legacy Lessons From An HBCU Giant
Send us a comment about the Be a Baller Podcast Episode. Thanks for support. A celebration can tell you everything about a leader’s life’s work. When Dr. Moses Newsome Jr. returned to Norfolk State University for the 30th anniversary of its social work PhD—the school’s first doctoral program—he saw former students running departments, teaching his own daughter, and carrying forward a mission built on access, excellence, empowerment, and legacy. We dive into how those outcomes were forged: a childhood in Charleston, WV where compassion wasn’t preached, it was practiced; a track scholarship to Toledo that opened the first door; and mentors who steered raw purpose toward social work and higher education. From the Howard classroom to the dean’s office, Dr. Newsome describes the moment he realized teaching 20 students at a time wasn’t enough. He began writing to scale his message, then pursued leadership to build structures where service could multiply. That vision drove a decade-long effort to launch Norfolk State’s PhD program, navigating state approvals and institutional change to lift a master’s-level university into doctoral territory. The story doesn’t stop there—he went on to shape national standards with the Council on Social Work Education, embedding inclusive curricula, international perspectives, and community engagement across HBCUs and PWIs alike. We also unpack what makes HBCUs uniquely powerful: real nurture, practical support, and faculty who refuse to let students fall through the cracks. For early-career academics, Dr. Newsome offers hard-won advice—pick your lane (micro, or macro), find mentors aligned with your mission, and build a body of work that opens doors for others. His definition of legacy is both personal and systemic: not just who follows you, but what practices they carry forward. Napoleon Bell's Journey: From Police Officer to Community Champion
Send us a comment about the Be a Baller Podcast Episode. Thanks for support. Napoleon Bell II's remarkable journey from DJ to police officer to community relations director reveals a singular commitment: bringing people together to create meaningful change. In this powerful conversation with Coach Tim Brown, Bell shares the philosophy that has guided his decades of public service in Columbus, Ohio."Together we can make such a difference. We've got to inspire folk, bring them together honestly and build that trust," Bell explains, revealing his approach to community transformation. Drawing from his upbringing with civil rights-focused parents, Bell developed an early sense of responsibility toward protecting and empowering others.Throughout his career transitions—from sales to law enforcement to community relations—Bell maintained a consistent focus on authentic human connection. His work as a police liaison officer taught him that roughly 98% of community members are hardworking people trying to make a living, while just 2% create most problems. This perspective shift allowed him to become a true advocate for neighborhood residents, going beyond typical law enforcement roles to address root causes of community issues.Bell's founding of the annual Neighborhood Best Practices Conference exemplifies his bottom-up approach to community development. Rather than bringing in outside experts, the conference centers the voices of community members themselves, creating spaces for networking and knowledge sharing. Similarly, his work with the Civil Rights Heritage Tour connects generations through shared historical understanding, taking participants to pivotal civil rights sites across the South.Perhaps most powerful is Bell's insight that "95% of the time, people just want to be heard." This understanding guided his approach to difficult community conversations, embracing rather than avoiding tension as an opportunity for authentic expression and problem-solving. For aspiring community leaders, Bell offers straightforward advice: have thick skin, lead collaboratively, and start now—especially young people, who have more power to create change than they realize. What will your legacy be? Listen now to discover how small victories, authentic relationships, and consistent advocacy can transform communities for generations to come.Support the show

Now co-founder of Fort Columbus and Pray for Ohio ministries, Scott works to activate believers to serve their communities as a unified body of Christ. The wisdom Scott shares about fatherhood is both simple and profound: model authentic faith, love your wife well, maintain integrity, and abide in Christ. His favorite image for spiritual growth comes from John 15—staying connected to Jesus as branches to a vine, drawing life from that relationship rather than striving in our own strength. This principle requires humility and the willingness to surrender control—qualities essential for effective fatherhood.Scott's transparency about his own journey reveals valuable lessons. Looking back, he urges fathers to slow down and be fully present with their children: "Sit down and listen, wrestle a bit more with those boys, laugh a little longer, because life will happen. You don't need to get there. Be present for the day." His three successful sons—Isaac, Noah, and Peter—stand as testament to these principles in action.Whether you're just beginning your fatherhood journey or looking to strengthen your family's legacy, Scott's five-generation perspective offers timeless wisdom for raising children who will continue passing the torch of faith to future generations. BAB Podcast Fatherhood Series Frank Stretar Building a Legacy: Fatherhood Across Generations
Send us a comment about the Be a Baller Podcast Episode. Thanks for support. Coach Frank Stretar after raising eight children who've gone on to have families of their own, Frank's impact now touches the lives of 24 grandchildren—and countless young men in Cleveland without father figures. Coach Frank Stretar knows firsthand what it take to build a legacy of fatherhood that spans generations.Frank takes us on a journey from his Catholic upbringing through decades of youth ministry with FCA, Young Life, and church leadership, before founding Leader Within, a nonprofit equipping young people with essential leadership skills. Along the way, we discover how a single piece of advice changed his approach to fatherhood: "If you're not doing ministry at home, you have no business doing it elsewhere."The conversation dives deep into the real challenges of parenting that don't end when children leave home. Frank shares heart-wrenching stories of supporting his daughter after she became a young widow with four children, and helping his son through a painful divorce. Through it all, his unwavering faith provides the foundation for healing and growth across generations.Perhaps most powerful is Frank's reflection on what he'd tell his younger self: "Smile more." Looking back at old photographs, he noticed he wasn't smiling enough—carrying burdens too heavily instead of finding joy in the journey. It's this kind of hard-earned wisdom that makes Frank's story so valuable for fathers at any stage of the journey. For men balancing career ambitions with family responsibilities, Frank offers practical guidance: "Take more vacations with your family. Make them see they're valued more than your career." And like Caleb in the Bible who remained strong into old age, Frank demonstrates what it means to finish well—physically, spiritually, mentally, and emotionally equipped for the challenges ahead.Ready to rethink what it means to build a legacy that outlasts you? Listen now and discover why the most important leadership you'll ever provide begins at home.Support the show
