Episodes

  1. Thylacine: It’s coming back… if it was ever gone

It’s a little later than normal but here is the BeanStalkers episode from last week. Thylacines or the Tasmanian tiger are thought to be extinct. While there are companies working on bringing them back perhaps they were never gone to begin with…

  2. Kangaroo Rat: Tiny yet mighty

The kangaroo rat is one of the few mammals that does not need an open water source. A fascinating little, hoppy critter that just wants to be left alone.

  3. Demons: Myths told to explain the unknown or something more?

Demons are found in every culture around the world from the very beginning of time. They take many forms and are thought of very differently from region to region and religion to religion. What are they really?

  4. Orcas: Demons of the sea?

Orcas have been in the news a lot this year. Also known as killer whales, but are they really? Find out this week.

  5. Zombies: Zombi? Astral?

Just in time to be a day late from Halloween it’s zombies! Maybe more than just slow, mindless, flesh devourers. Zombies go way back and are ingrained into some societies.

  6. Bats: They are the terror in the night!

Bats come in many sizes and can be found almost everywhere and yet we are so afraid if even the tiniest bat that some humans kill them by the thousands without cause. I think we need to change that.

  7. Genasi: Genies, Djinn, and more!

Genasi may be found in Dungeons and Dragons most often, but they are everywhere in our past. Stories from before recording have been passed down. Come with us on a journey to the past and possibly the present as we discuss Genasi.

  8. Bombardier Beetles: Not quite dragons... but close

The bombardier beetle family can be found nearly everywhere. They sometimes explode and are always cool little critters.

  9. Faeries: Crocker was right!

Faeries, fairies, fairfolk, fake folk, so many names. So much history. What’s real, what’s not? Who can say? Maybe you’ve seen them and don’t even know.

  10. Coelacanth: It was here, now it is again

Missing for a very long time the coelacanth is a fish that was thought to be extinct and now it is making a come back. What else might be out there just waiting to be discovered?

  11. Boogeyman: Not John Wick!

Stories of creatures lurking just out of sight or seeking out children to punish them have been told for all of human history. Are there real monsters out there or are they just stories?

  12. Marine Iguana: The few, the proud

Marine iguanas are one of the few aquatic lizards in the world. They are certainly the one that spends the most time in the water. Split across many islands in the Galapagos each island has its own sub-species. Fasinating!

  13. Environmental Cryptids: What are they?

Elementals? Dryads? Sentient plants? Maybe. We explore the cryptid side of the environment this week on BeanStalkers.

  14. Environment: And then humans!

We as humans like to go into places we do not belong and then change it to fit our needs. What if we just stopped?! What if we let nature have some areas without humans moving in and changing it? Let’s give that a try.

  15. The Working Man’s Cryptid: Elves or Dwarfs?

When it comes to hard work two legendary creatures come to mind… elves and dwarves. Which one is better? Find out that it is elves this week on BeanStalkers!

  16. Blue Collar Animals: They get the job done!

There are hard workers all around us. Some we know and some we don’t. As a belated tribute to Labor Day we share 4 of our favorite hard working animals.

  17. Gigantopithecus: The real life Bigfoot?

There are few questions that this giant ape actually existed, but could it still exist? Hiding deep in the woods and myths of Asia and North America? Lurking just out of site as unaware hikers take in the quiet beauty of the little traveled places. Maybe! Gigantopithecus this week on BeanStalkers!

  18. Orangutans: People fo the forest

Many stories surround these amazing animals. Humans have known about orangutans for thousands of years. In modern history they have forgotten how to live with them and have nearly wiped them out.

  19. Red Pandas: Wait.. We already did that one!

As we mentioned in the last episode red pandas are steeped in lore. Stories of Asiatic red pandas have been passed around for hundreds or possibly even thousands of years.

  20. Red Panda: The Real Panda!

Red pandas are awesome! They’re cute and smart AND they used to be in Northeast Tennessee. Unfortunately they are steeped in lore and thought to be magical leading them to be hunted and trapped for medicinal purposes.

  21. Owlbear: Druids can do it if they want!!

Legendary Dungeons and Dragons foe, depending on the version you play a Druid CAN polymorph into one. Owlbear are not just for D&D. They also provide us with a great way to think about the “what ifs” in life. What if they were real, how different would life be? Come explore the majesty of…

    more
  22. Owls: Who gives a hoot?!

Owls are awesome! They fly silently, are major players in rodent control, and are amazingly cuddly. From the tiny screech owls of America to the giant Eurasian owls these raptors are everywhere.

  23. Half Chick: What?!

Half chick is a cautionary tale on the importance of being kind to everyone, even if they are not kind to you. There is no trying to prove this creature exists just pure enjoyment as Nathaniel tries to figure out what is happening.

  24. What if there were no ducks?

It’s odd to think how important ducks are to our lives. Not just us as in AoA or farms or homesteaders, no big U big S US as in everyone, everywhere. Ducks play such an important role for the environment that it would be devastating and world changing IF they were sudddenly gone.

  25. Hyenaman: Scare tactic or freaky stickrubbers?

Is Hyenaman just another story used to scare children in to obeying? Who cares?! The stories saves lives and it is very entertaining. It may also be true. Find out this week.

  26. Red Wolf: Not Quite Dead

Red wolves had had quite the rollercoaster. From covering the east of North America to being extinct in the wild and then nearly coming back to… well just listen. It’s wild!

  27. Kelpie: Is it a dinosaur?

We’ve all heard of kelpies, but what are they really? Do they exist? Are they lurking in every body of water just waiting to kill us? Are they plesiosaurs? Find out this week… or not.

  28. Amazon River Dolphins: They’re pink!

The Amazon River Dolphins are really cool and steeped in mythology, but they are also in real danger. Find out why.

  29. Mermaids: Do they want to drown you or help you?

Many tales have been spun about the merfolk, but what is true and what is the fantasy of delusional would be explorers? We dive into the shallow waters surrounding the world to find out as we talk about mermaids.

  30. Manatees: Just ask Chris

Sea Cows, mermaids, Chris’s experiment… whatever you wanna call them they are essential to maintaining sea grass beds and they are pretty awesome. This week we discuss manatees.

  31. Thunderbird: Not the email client… Nathaniel!

The thunderbird, Native American legend or cautionary tales to live by? There are many tales from as recent as the early 2010s, but they go much further back. Could there be a giant bird hunting for children? Find out this week.

  32. Bald Eagle: Fly you fools!

America’s symbol of freedom, a bird shown in many films and tv shows but rarely heard (thanks red tale hawks!). We talk about Florida and wind turbines and how one of them is doing something right this week on BeansTalk!

  33. Ancient Aliens: Vistors from afar, long ago

Did visitors from another world help shape our culture? Did ancient aliens teach us everything? I say maybe! Nathaniel says no. Who’s right? Who knows!

  34. Animal Builders: They build like we do

Animal builders have inspired humans to build amazing things. Thanks to their inspiration we have accomplished many things. In this episode we give credit where credit is due,

  35. Lycanthropes: It’s a howl of a time

Lycanthropes, not just wolves and not just pretty boys that fight vampires. Ancient and dark but not always bad this week we find out the truth behind changing into the form of an animal.

  36. Seahorses: Can’t ride ‘em

Seahorses… a father that really takes the whole “I’d do it for you…” thing to the max. What a cool yet delicate critter!

  37. Owlman: Yawn!

Owlman seems like a cool cryptic but… well you’ll see.

  38. Pigeons: They’re all doves

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No wait it’s a bird… it’s Pigeons! Doves? Both! But at the same time just one? Pigeons are confusing and probably not what you expect them to be. Hopefully by the end of it all you’ll understand what we mean.

  39. World Turtle: Let’s go for a ride!

While there is ample evidence that shows the world is NOT in fact supported by a giant turtle, that does not negate the creation myths from the many cultures around the world. The world turtle is an important part of many cultures including Hindu, Chinese, and many Northeastern Woodland peoples…

  40. Pinta Tortise: It’s extinct?!

The pinta giant tortoise has the saddest history of any animal we have covered in this episode. First discovered in 1877 they were brought to ecological extinction by the turn of the 20th century. Meaning in 23 years they were wiped out from their natural environments and only the ones captured...

  41. Cryptid Crabs: Time for a buffet!

They’re creepy, they’re crawly, and they require a water source… you guessed it. Crustaceans, this week on BeanStalkers…

  42. Crazy Crustaceans: Skeletons?… On the outside?

By now you all know we tend to get a little crazy on this podcast but nothing we do on this show even compares to the craziness of the crustaceans we’re gonna talk about today.

  43. El Sharana Bird: Not Spanish, but it’s a bird

The bird was spotted near the El Sherana Mine, an abandoned uranium mine. The mine was first discovered in 1954 and went into production in 1958. The first run ended in 1959. It picked back up in 1961 and closed forever in 1964. Richard Wells, a herpetologist, first spotted the bird in 1977. He...

  44. Kiwi: It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a… cat?

The Kiwi has one of the most interesting taxonomic histories to date on this show. They have been classified and reclassified a total of 5 different times since their initial classification in 1813. Originally classified in the order Haeckel, the family Grey, and the Genus Shaw. It went through 3...

  45. Hags: Happy Mother’s Day to each one

Hags have been around for a long time. Sometimes they are just ugly women and sometimes they eat children. To celebrate Mother’s Day we discuss hags.

  46. Matriarchs: Thanks mom!

Matriarchs rule much of the animal kingdom. What can we learn from them? Plenty!

  47. Chupacabra: What is it?

A coyote with mange? A strange creature from the ancient past? What is the chupacabra? Find out this week.

  48. Gila Monster: Not a real monster

This week we’re talking about the Gila monster and i think will be quite the episode. These little guys are fascinating.

  49. Vampires: They really suck…

Vampires… most of us know these creatures from modern movies or maybe perhaps relate them to Vlad the Impeller.

  50. Indiana Bat: Had a good lookin’ momma

We’re talking about the Indiana Bat, this little guy is commonly mistaken for the little brown bat and is one of 2 endangered bats we have here in the state of Tennessee. The other being the gray bat. Another cutie that strikes terror in the heart of… never-mind.
