#121 - Special: The Beatles - The Prisoner Connection

Dive into a one‑of‑a‑kind conversation connecting The Beatles, the iconic 1960s TV series The Prisoner, and the legendary Welsh village of Portmeirion. In this special episode, Beatles News Briefs host and veteran Beatles reporter Steve Marinucci is joined by renowned archivist Keith Badman and Meurig Jones, Portmeirion’s longtime location manager, for an unforgettable deep‑dive into music history, television culture, and rare behind‑the‑scenes stories. Speaking to us directly from inside Portmeirion, Jones shares exclusive, little‑known accounts of the Beatles’ visits to the village—stories involving all four Beatles and many of their closest associates. Discover why the band was fascinated by The Prisoner, how the show’s surreal setting influenced them, and what kept drawing them, most of all George Harrison, back to this magical location. Fresh from his own recent trip, Keith Badman adds vivid details about exploring the filming sites, the Beatles‑related landmarks, and the enduring cultural impact of both the band and the series. This episode is packed with rare insights, historical gems, and fun, engaging storytelling—a must‑see and/or hear for Beatles fans, The Prisoner devotees, and anyone captivated by Portmeirion’s unique charm. And there's a bonus for those who view it on YouTube: The video version includes photos provided by Meurig Jones.   --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You can binge listen to all of our episodes free at Podbean, on YouTube or on our Beatles News Briefs blog page. #119 - Beatles Anthology insider and archivist Keith Badman on digging for music treasures, upcoming book

Welcome back, everyone! I’m your host, Steve Marinucci — and today’s episode is a big one. We’re joined by someone who was inside one of the most ambitious Beatles projects ever created: Keith Badman, who worked on the original Beatles Anthology and is a veteran of major pop‑music deep‑dives. Keith pulls back the curtain on what it was really like to help build the Anthology, the hunt for never‑before‑seen clips, and the detective work required to bring lost Beatles and pop music history back to life. He'll relate the story of showing a found clip to a British singing legend and their reaction.  He even teases the subject of his next Beatles history book — a project packed with archival discoveries and now nearing the finish line. Plus, we’ll share a review of “John & Yoko: Power to the People” and wrap up with the latest Beatles News Briefs you need to know. Here we go.  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You can binge listen to all of our episodes free at Podbean, on YouTube or on our Beatles News Briefs blog page. #108 - "Borrowed Time, Part 2": Journalist Alan Weiss, the first to report the news about John Lennon on 12/8/80

On Dec. 8, 1980, journalist Alan Weiss, a local TV news producer on WABC-TV in New York City,  headed out on his motorcycle into the night. A crash with a taxi landed him in Roosevelt Hospital in New York City, where, lying on a gurney, he thought he heard a conversation that indicated that John Lennon had been shot and was in the emergency room next to him. How an injured Weiss managed to confirm the story and pass it first to his local news department, which then passed it on to the ABC network is part of the focus of our discussion in which we also examine how the local station and the network reacted to the story. The tragic news became one of the top stories of the year, for which Weiss won an Emmy. That and more on this edition of Beatles News Briefs hosted by Steve Marinucci. A deep discussion into the new John Lennon & Yoko Ono box set "Power To the People" as Steve Marinucci talks first with author Candy Leonard ("Beatleness"), who looks back at the era in which the "Some Time In New York City" album was originally released and the difficulties Lennon and Ono faced with drug busts and immigration troubles. Then Gary Van Scyoc, bassist with the Elephant's Memory Band, the group that played with John & Yoko on the "Some Time In New York City" album and the Willowbrook concert, discusses the history of the Elephant's Memory band, his thoughts on the box set, what it was like having John Lennon and Yoko Ono performing and recording with him and the band and tells some interesting stories about working with them. #102 - Decca Tapes Part III - Rob Frith's true story of handing Paul McCartney a lost Decca Tapes reel

When we interviewed record dealer Rob Frith in show #91 in March, he told us about the Beatles Decca tape he had found in a collection he bought. After there were indications this wasn't just an ordinary tape, he said that if Paul McCartney wanted the tape, Frith would give it to him for free if he could give it to him personally. It was an idea that seemed like wishful thinking at the time, but believe it or not, it happened. He tells us the full story in detail -- what led to the meeting and what happened next (like Paul's reaction to getting the tape, having lunch with Paul and watching the band rehearse). And there's an even more unlikely finish to the story at the end that we didn't expect. Thanks for listening, and be sure to subscribe if you aren't a subscriber already. Also, for those who didn't catch the video-only podcast of Ringo's September 9th press conference we posted on YouTube as show #100 we have portions of the audio here with Ringo, the All-Starrs and friends talking about the band and their tour and Ringo discussing his new book, art exhibit and next album. In her years of radio work, Laurie Kaye has talked to such rock luminaries as Paul McCartney (with wife Linda), George Harrison, Beatles producer George Martin, Little Richard, Mick Jagger, Bob Weir, The Ramones, Talking Heads and more. But it was her interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono on Dec. 8, 1980, the night he was murdered, that is the focus of her book "Confessions of a Rock 'n' Roll Name Dropper: My Life Leading Up to John Lennon's Last Interview." She talks about the Lennon interview, her Beatles interviews (with excerpts from each of her vintage Beatles interviews featured in this show) and more in this episode. We hope you enjoy the show! We have two great guests for you in our latest Beatles News Briefs podcast. First is a talk with distinguished author Jude Southerland Kessler on her new John Lennon Series book, "Some Forever: Shades Of Life, Volume 2," about the momentous year of 1965 for Lennon and the Beatles, including the great concert at Shea Stadium and how Lennon's personal life was beginning to fray. Next, following up on our show #91 about the recently surfaced Canadian Decca tapes, we go a little deeper into it and talk with Jack Herschorn, the man who actually first had the tape for many years. He tells how he came into possession of it and what he thought about it. We also include some news, including one late headline that broke while we were doing final editing of the show. #91 - The Beatles In Canada II - The Decca Tapes Mystery Examined

The news that a high quality copy of the Beatles 1/1/62 Decca Tapes Audition had surfaced in Canada started a lot of commentary and speculation among fans, social media and radio DJs on just what had been discovered. This episode of Beatles News Briefs does a deep dive and investigates this story by going to the source with interviews of the three men who found and have listened to the tape - Rob Frith of Neptoon Records, Larry Hennessey of Reel To Reel To Digital.com and Doug Shober, host of the music blog Noise From the Cranium -- who describe the tape and tells what they have. We also have statements from three renowned Beatles experts - Bruce Spizer, Piers Hemmingsen and Mark Lewisohn - on what the Canadian tape might be. And yours truly gives his comments to one of the songs on the tape which we heard in its entirety. It's the first real answers to the question of what this tape is and what this all means. And we would love to hear your comments. Send them to [email protected]. And please subscribe and review our show. #90 - The Beatles In Canada - Featuring interviews with John Brower and Piers Hemmingsen

A very entertaining and informative look back at the history of The Beatles In Canada with two superb interviews. The first is with John Brower, co-promoter of the 1969 Toronto Rock 'n' Roll Revival that featured John Lennon, Yoko Ono and the Plastic Ono Band, plus veteran rockers Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Gene Vincent, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley, plus The Doors and Alice Cooper. Brower tells some wonderful stories about how John Lennon became part of the show and also discusses the recent documentary, "Revival '69: The Concert That Rocked The World," with which he was involved. Then we talk with noted Beatles In Canada authority Piers Hemmingsen. He talks about how The Beatles were known to Canadian radio listeners before Americans, his work with the Toronto '65 live Beatles concert tapes, and how the tapes, which were great quality when he found them, turned out to be even better quality than he originally thought, and what might be in store with the Beatles' Hamburg tapes. All that plus news and reviews and just a whole lot of shakin' goin' on. Step right up and listen. And be sure to subscribe, review, follow us, and pass the word (and our link) around. #82 - Don Dannemann of The Cyrkle on their career, Brian Epstein and touring with the Beatles

On this episode, we welcome Don Dannemann of The Cyrkle, the group whose Top 20 hits "Red Rubber Ball" (written by Paul Simon) and "Turn-Down Day" were familiar to AM audiences during 1966. But The Cyrkle's history also includes a huge Beatles connection, since they were managed by Brian Epstein and also went on tour with The Beatles in the U.S. He'll talk about all that and their current doings (which include a new album).
