We had the 'distilled' pleasure of interviewing Vern Brown of Duneland Distillery. Forged from John "Happy Jack" Hamrick, who was at once a Baptist minister and a moonshiner, the family distilling traditions were passed down through the generations. Now it's Vern Brown's turn, the great-great-grandson of "Happy Jack". Duneland Distillery is housed in an old 23,000 sq ft. bowling alley at 124 N. 8th Street. Featuring a tasting bar and cocktail bar, the distillery has a wide variety of spirits including artisan vodka, “not your grandpa’s” Gin (which will be infused with elderberry, rose petals and other delicious flavors), tequila, moonshine and more. You will also be able to get specialty cocktails and mixed drinks if you visit. The cost of any tastings can go towards the purchase of bottles, which will also be available. “The tastings at Duneland Distillery will be a really neat experience,” said Vern, “different than any of the other distilleries around.” Just like Chesterton Brewery, part of Duneland Distillery’s mission will be to give back to veterans and local heroes. Beats, Beds & Browns Live with Boone County Jail Distillery
In 1938, the Boone Co. Jail was upgraded and fortified, ensuring the building would stand strong against potential civil unrest. At that time, a secret tunnel was installed for quick entry and exit, adding to the building’s already impressive architecture and design. The building served the local Sherriff’s department faithfully until a new facility was built on the outskirts of town in 1992. The old jail’s historic and stunning architecture were the perfect features to inspire brother-sister team Nicki and Sean Stoller to cultivate a brand new distillery experience, and the Boone County Jail Distillery was created. As we kickoff the Browns portion of Season 2, we couldn't be happier to feature Nicki Stoller, co-founder of Boone County Jail Distillery. Nicki shares stories about her work history, tales from the front lines selling Boone County Jail products, and we sample a number of products including Gin and Moonshine. Beats, Beds & Browns Live with Corey Hagleberg
Corey Hagelberg is an interdisciplinary artist and teacher. He is co-founder and director of the Calumet Artist Residency (CAR), whose mission is to connect people, art and nature in the Calumet Region. For the last 15 years, his work with black and white woodcut has highlighted the relationship between the human and natural world. Recently, his social practice has increasingly addressed issues of food justice, community growing spaces, and regenerative agriculture as it relates to creating resilient local economies and a livable planet. He lives and works in Gary, Indiana. Corey seeks to emphasize and embrace opposites and contradictions in our everyday experiences. His work blurs the line between humor and tragedy, current and historical, high art and low art, natural and industrial, accusation and confession, and beautiful and grotesque. Corey hopes his art will encourage the viewer to evaluate and challenge their own notions of meaning, value and beauty. GET IN TOUCH! Beats, Beds & Browns Live with Pit Moss
We couldn't be more pleased to present the founder and leadership team of PittMoss, the revolutionary, up-cycled peat-free potting mixes for outdoor and indoor plants! PittMoss manufactures revolutionary soilless potting mixes from organic, recycled paper. Carefully and locally sourced, their peat-free products are the result of decades-long research into the use of recycled paper fibers. The result? The best performing, most environmentally-friendly gardening mixes on the market, that also require less water! In 2015, PittMoss was introduced to the investors on Shark Tank, ABC’s favorite reality show for would-be entrepreneurs. Mont Handley, with his unbridled passion for the idea he had nurtured for more than 20 years, convinced three of the “sharks” to invest in his company. In 2017, building on the product’s success among commercial growers, PittMoss finally launched its consumer retail product line. Mont Handley (Founder), Brian Scott (CEO) and Soil Scientist (Dr. Charles Bethke) all share their take on their product and a number of other issues relevant to the horticultural industry. Beats, Beds & Browns Live with Indiana State Representative Earl L. Harris, Jr.
We're pleased to host Indiana State Representative Earl L. Harris, Jr. on the show. Representative Harris was first elected to the Indiana House of Representatives in 2016. He represents Indiana House District 2, which is within Lake County. Harris serves as Assistant Democratic Floor Leader and on the following legislative committees: Ways and Means, Government and Regulatory Reform, and Roads and Transportation. On Nov. 20, 2018, Rep. Harris was named Vice Chair of the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus. Harris is the founder and owner of a television and video production company, Motivation Media, that produces marketing and communication videos for clients and programming for broadcast television networks. He has received two Emmy nominations for programming produced for FOX Sports Midwest. Harris has also produced programming for other networks, including PBS, and has served as talent in commercials and videos. Organizations Harris has previously been involved with include the Indiana Latino Institute, Noble of Indiana, Joy’s House and the IPS Supplier Diversity Student Entrepreneur Mentor Program. Harris is a member of the Board of Hispanic Caucus Chairs, Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs, East Chicago Urban Enterprise Association, Enterprise Development and Management Corporation, Indiana Black Legislative Caucus, NAACP, National Black Caucus of State Legislators, National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, and National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators. Legislation authored by State Rep. Earl Harris Jr. (D-East Chicago) to expand economic, education and food access in urban areas through agriculture today passed through the House with bipartisan support. House Bill 1283 provides for the creation of urban agricultural zones, which allow for the cultivation, processing, and distributing of food in areas typically reserved for urban development. “Agriculture is a key part of Indiana's economy, but Hoosiers in urban areas like East Chicago may not feel like they can participate in it because of their surroundings,” Harris said. “There are many benefits to expanding agriculture to these urban areas. Young people would learn about the science involved and realize this is a career opportunity. Restaurants would have access to locally-sourced, healthy produce. I think this kind of legislation, that offers hope and opportunity, is much-needed..." Beats, Beds & Browns Live with Tulip Tree Gardens
I was honored to tour the grounds at Tulip Tree Gardens, the Commercial Farm started by Rachael and Jesse Smedberg. Rachael started Tulip Tree Gardens as a micro farm applying her knowledge in soil health and organic practices while supplying her local community with organic produce. And Jesse brings years of engineering experience along with a passion for nature, science and wellness. Working together, this couple is living their dream as first generation farmers and parents of young twins. Working the land, caring for crops and their community day in and day out. It’s hard work, but for Rachael and Jesse, protecting the soil, biodiversity, and our ecosystem is a privilege well worth the effort. The 2018 Farm Bill made it legal to both grow industrial hemp in the United States and sell hemp-derived CBD products grown in the U.S. Through regenerative farming methods, whole-plant utilization, fully-integrated process, and outreach to the farming community, our work demonstrates what we can do together when we think and act holistically. Continuing our stated mission of covering gardening in all it's forms, emerging hip hop artists, and Brown Spirits distillation, Beats, Beds & Browns is proud of their conversation and tour of Tulip Tree Gardens. We hope you enjoy the story as it unfolds of this regenerative farm, leading the production of CBD botanicals, Commercial Hemp, and Organic Flowers and Vegetables.
