All The Not So Small Things with Bree and Zak George

Welcome to Beers and Biscuits! A Dogcast for the rest of us! We're happy to welcome Bree and Zak George to explore the challenges of navigating social media as a dog trainer and expectations of followers. We discuss the importance of patience when navigating criticism. We discuss the importance of mental strength and self-care in dealing with criticism and burnout and touch on the challenges of certification and the need for a more streamlined and standardized process. We then shift focus to the use of dogs in working situations, with different perspectives shared on the ethical considerations and potential for change within the system. We explore the need for change within the working dog industry and the importance of shifting from punishment-based training methods to more compassionate and effective approaches. We discuss the need for leadership within the industry to advocate for these changes and the potential for using dogs in different capacities, such as therapy and comfort dogs. We also touch on the challenges of questioning and challenging industry leaders and the importance of holding each other accountable. The conversation ends with a reflection on the impact of respectful and open conversations and the need for mutual respect and understanding, while also being ok with burning idols. Episode Takeaways Managing social media as a dog trainer can be challenging, especially when dealing with expectations from followers. Conversations have evolved and expanded their scope and content over time, now addressing topics like aversive dog training and exploring issues like colonialism and toxic masculinity. Patience is key when fielding questions and criticism, and it's important to set boundaries and not feel obligated to respond to every comment. The certification process for dog trainers can be challenging and there is a need for a more streamlined and standardized approach that is more accessible. The use of dogs in working situations, particularly in the military and police, raises ethical considerations and the need for change within the system. Inviting open and evidence-based conversations can help drive positive change in the treatment of working dogs and the overall system. Dogs can be used in different capacities, such as therapy and comfort dogs, which requires a shift in mindset about their role in policing. Questioning and challenging industry leaders is important for growth and progress, but it can be met with resistance and dismissal. Sound Bites "Managing social media as a dog trainer can be challenging" "I got like sweaty palms even just talking about it" "We are pursuing certifications. We're actually both signed up for an animal behavior course" "We are coming from a place of punishment culture." "It has to come from within, right?" This Place is a Zoo! - What We Can Learn from Exotic Animal Trainers with Chelsea Brofman

Welcome to Beers and Biscuits, a Dogcast for the rest of us! In this episode we explore what it's like to be an exotic animal trainer in zoos and aquariums - and why what applies to one species applies to all species. In the dog training industry, we often hear that training exotic, wild captive, animals does not require the same methods or level of knowledge, expertise, patience and skill as working with domestic animals. Let’s put that myth to rest. With the help of Chelsea Brofman, Relief Zookeeper and Exotic Animal Trainer for the Topeka Zoo, we discuss what it’s like to work with other species and how the methods used are equally important. Whether you’re training a lion, a tiger, a once thought extinct ferret species, or your canine friend, how we approach training is the same. Chelsea also sheds some light on the importance of grace when working with our animal friends and ourselves – And we have a real, honest discussion about some of the struggles she’s faced as a dog guardian with her own beagle Maui. Featured Beverage: Newburyport Brewing Company's Sandbar Double IPA. As the first brewery to can their entire line of beers in Massachusetts, they became one of the top 10 fastest growing breweries since prohibition in year one - And since 2012, their beers have won awards and their brewery is regularly included in top lists for beer sales in the state and country. Featured Biscuit: Pupford Freeze Dried Beef Training Treats. Pupford offers treats, chews, and more. Made with all natural ingredients, perfectly portioned for pups, and designed to support your pup’s long-term physical, behavioral, and cognitive health. Featured Guest: Chelsea Brofman, is a graduate of University of New England where she earned a degree in Psychobiology. She has had the unique experience of working with a variety of species from  rehabilitating wild seals to working conservation and repopulation projects for a number of endangered wildlife species. You can see some of her work on display on the Topeka Zoo Facebook and Instagram pages.   We hope you enjoyed the conversation and please don’t forget to give your dog a biscuit from us. Backpack Full of Bricks - Part 1

TRIGGER WARNING:  Pet Loss and Grief - Here we have an in-depth conversation surrounding pet loss, grief and all the emotions that come with it. We understand how this discussion may impact listeners - And that this episode may not be for everyone. We hope, listener or not, that you explore the information below to help you find healing. Welcome to Beers and Biscuits, a Dogcast for the rest of us! Here we explore, and seek to validate, the pain of loss and normalize the grief associated with it. We explore different types of grief, and we hope to bring about understanding and empathy to anyone who has experienced, or who is still experiencing the wealth of emotions related to all kinds of losses. In this episode we discuss both Anticipatory Grief and Disenfranchised Grief as common threads in pet loss grief. We also explore some of the other emotions that can be tied to grief and loss, like guilt and resentment. We talk about the cumulative grief we can experience throughout life when we experience losses of all kinds, and how heavy those bricks can feel when we carry them around with us. “…we need empathy now more than ever… Companion Animal Grief deserves empathy, compassion, and validation. From society, from your boss, from friends and family, and from the griever themselves. Your heartbreak and anguish over the loss of your pet is valid. To have your life shattered over this loss is valid. It is not less-than in any way. All Fun and No Joy: Advocating for Agency with Heidi Armstrong

Welcome to Beers and Biscuits, a Dogcast for the rest of us! “If you ask the dog, is this how you’d choose to live your life? Bet there are a lot of dogs that would say no.”  In this episode we discuss what agency means, some easy ways to incorporate more agency into your dog’s daily routine, and what can happen when we neglect agency -especially in areas we assume bring dog’s joy, like sports and competitions. On this episode, we talk about agency with former dog (and human) sports competitor, Heidi Armstrong, about what can happen when we strive for perfection at the expense of agency.   “Agency is the ability to have some level of control in our environment and be able to make choices that will result in a desirable outcome. One of the important factors here is that agency requires at least two desirable choices.” Allie Bender in Agency: What It is & Why Your Pet Needs It. Featured Beverage: Triple Eight Distillery and Cisco Brewers - Nantucket Craft Cocktail Cranberry Vodka Soda. Cisco Brewers, founded in 1995 on the island of Nantucket, is proud to bottle up that “happiest place on earth” energy.  At Cisco, “good vibes are always in season”. She is an injury recovery coach and founder of Injured Athlete's Toolbox. She helps athletes overcome the mental and emotional fallout of injury. Heidi values fostering a joyful, clever, free-thinking, agency-centered creative relationship with her dogs. In 2004, Heidi adopted Bella, and Bella went on to help Heidi deepen her relationship and understanding of dogs. Heidi and Bella were one of the founding therapy dog teams with Austin-based Divine Canines and they trained and competed in agility and rally obedience, hiked many thousands of miles together and cherished many frisbee sessions.  In June of 2020, Heidi rescued Cheza (which means "play" in Swahili). Heidi continues to foster Cheza's greatest joy - using her body and balancing through trick training, hiking, swimming, agility, performing, rally obedience, SAR work and commercial work. Cheza and Heidi are also a therapy dog team with Divine Canines. You can check out Cheza and Heidi on Instagram, or see Cheza and friends in a 2022 Puppy Bowl commercial.
