FLOURISH
Painting the background, underscoring my remarks for this, our 67th( ? ) episode, is my arrangement of The Way We Were by Marvin Hamlisch, Alan & Marilyn Bergman. It is so fitting with my taking a look back over chapters of our lives. I mixed it so it is barely audible—just enough to color the nostalgic mood.)The musicians on BREATHE AGAIN (written by Babyface) are Bevin Turnbull on keyboards, Bruce Alcott on Fender Bass, and Anthony MacDonald on percussion. I intend to contact Toni Braxton to see what she thinks of my arrangement. I’ll let you know what she says.

DREW BLUE (Part 2)
Welcome to Turn-Tay-Bull Podcasting’s 60-something episode. This is part two about what ideas arose from the podcast interview, LIKE DAY & NIGHT, published in March, 2026. Andrew and I discussed the song, the singers, the time periods as well as the ever-evolving technologies. Now let’s listen to our piece, DREW BLUE which came about from jamming one day in my studio some years ago. That day Andrew sang a bass line which I picked up and added chords to. His lyrics eventually inspired me to add drums and trumpet. As the piece unfolded and took shape, it evoked a time and place; people we knew. . . Just as in our previous episode, the value and significance of those prior times resurfaced. Jazzy reflections of the life we’ve lived and are miraculously living still. Bevin Turnbull- piano, bass, drums and trumpetAndrew Patterson- vocals_________________________________________________________________Recently, Andrew brought me up to speed with an “ai“ artificial intelligent version of the song. I was both shocked and admittedly interested, if not engaged. No way did I think the piece had been improved! Yet, it did let me know how far we’ve come technologically. Almost frightening!AI-artificial intelligence NO HUMANS https://suno.com/song/0e0ac1a7-1eb1-48a9-8134-bbee10c2c326?sh=k09EO4QM0e20ta3hyou're curious, this is an AI version of Like Day & Night. What do you think?

Like Day & Night (Part 1)
This podcast is part one of a two-part episode. I interviewed singer, writer, martial artist, Andrew Patterson. We casually talked about versions of my song, Like Day & Night, recorded by a live group in 1979 and then just a few years ago. Yogi Lee Turnbull (now Yogi Lee Lewis) at 19 years old sings the earlier-recorded version; Hazel Dowe, now about 75 years old sings the more recent. ... L ...
Proposed Scene from the next book or film—The LATER INNINGS The 3rd piece you'll hear in this episode I call CYNTHIASYZER. L is the Roman numeral for 50. In this episode Cynthia N’diaye shares some thoughts and advice about health. WOH NELLY! Her conceptual tempo is a lot faster than mine. I feel caught in a whirlwind. Sheʼs so busy, on the run, on the go. It seems funny that sheʼs the one who is so into house music. I, to the contrary, tend to stay home, working on one project or another in my house—writing, practicing (3 instruments), doing yard work or home repair work. We did go to an awards event in Harlem. We sat pretty still there. Then we took a scenic walk along the Hudson RIverbank State Park. A lot was revealed both ways through open conversation. Very pleasant time. Quite leisurely. I have not yet been in her car, but I wonʼt be surprised if she drives fast. Weʼre already “driving” fast—so to speak— though all weʼve done is hold hands. Oh, and we hugged a couple of times. Itʼs like we have known one another for a much longer time. Whatʼs going on here? So far, Cynthia has influenced my music. Who would have ever thought that I would be recording a ʼʼhouse track" ? She—at 5’ 7'', all of 120 lbs.—also has made me think more about what Iʼm eating, especially in this period of my recovery. Her metabolism must be warp speed. Itʼs all exciting, but I (we) better slow down so no one gets hurt. I guess this would naturally be a vulnerable time for anyone. Music by Bevin Turnbull, Tommy John, Stew Cutler guitar on CLOCKTIME.

PRETTY LADY
More ideas which may appear in my next (4th) novel-- LATER INNINGS (working title). This chapter I might call The Seventh Inning Stretch. One song SHE SAVED MY LIFE: THEN BROKE MY HEART is a work in progress w/Anthony Chauncey on bass and background vocal, Q Dowe piano and lead vocal; Bevin on drums. On the second song Bevin is the composer and plays piano. The second song, PRETTY LADY, is a more mature, “finished” piece with myself on vocals, synthesizer and drums.

TORTOLA BVI
IDEAS FOR BOOK IV: Our trip to Tortola British West Indies is told in word pictures and music—not carefully scripted--just an outpouring of verbal and musical images. This mountainous, verdant, uncrowded island with its steep, challenging hills overlooking the Caribbean Sea, is our other home. Aye YOH, as my maternal grandmother would often say, meaning so many things. DOLL LADY describes the lovely femininity on that Island, from my point of view. I played keyboards and percussion on both those island-flavored pieces. My cousin, Jina Billups-Pearce sings QUiet SPACE accompanied by my keyboards. Of all my compositions, I chose to play this one for the Caribbean-born, famous percussionist, producer Ralph MacDonald when I got a one-on-one chance to audition for him. He loved it! ʼʼAll it takes is one,ʼʼ he said proudly, gazing around the room in his mansion. On Sunday, September, 8th, thanks to my literary agents at WRITER’S BRANDING, my novel, THE OTHER SIDE of TOMORROW will be reviewed in The New York Times Magazine.

MAKES ME WANT TO CRY
Cover Photo of Dr. Linda A. Rock Bevin has a casual conversation with Bethany Girard, a budding young author and friend. They discuss their Joy and Pain. His gleeful instrumental composition TARA opens this, our 27th episode. At a point where Bethany describes a quite poignant occurrence in her life, the music again takes over--MAKES ME WANT TO CRY--and says it all, when something is too painful, too raw to talk about yet. Wade "Suade" Lance plays a biting guitar solo over Bevin's keyboards and vocal as TARA reprises. MAKES ME WANT TO CRY--Bevin Turnbull composer & pianist John Moody bass violinist Garry Bruer drummer

Dona Nobis Pacem
We are dedicating this podcast to the people of Ukraine and Somalia--just two examples which represent the horrors of inhumanity, hatred and violence in the world. While the leader of Russia sleeps in a warm bed with a full belly, he dictates the bombing of infants and children, leaving them without heat, food or water as winter grips Europe. In Africa, similar evil persists. Our show expresses the joy and hope for better life in thee places and throughout the world. In a previous podcast I included my arrangement of MARCH SLAV which was composed by the great Ukrainian composer, Tchaikovsky. I have reprised it. Dr. Belinda Miles and I are promoting our upcoming show on December 17th at the NE Bronx YMCA--a citadel against our own urban terrorism, violence and disorder. Imagine: my arrangements of Sleigh Ride and Frosty depict uttter happiness and fun, in stark contrast to the war(s) at home and abroad. Belinda sings a poignant strain of Dona Nobis followed by an original of hers called SO DEEP. Yes, there exists optimism and love amidst the often bitter vicissitudes of the real world. SLEIGH RIDE and FROSTY are arrangements by Bevin Turnbull

MANHATTAN COOL
The song, MANHATTAN COOL is the featured subject. It was first recorded over 30 years ago at Systems Two Studios--Brooklyn, NY ; then again about 8 years ago at my studio--Tarah/Sarah Productions--Bronx, NY. In all these years, the song was never played before a live audience. I was always imagining that I could improve it. Now in 2022 we are seriously considering including its live debut in our next live production--Part Three of NEW JAZZ CITY:the musical. One of the main characters, Anthony is a cold individual who the song is about. He tries underhandedly to capture the attention of Sherri, the lead female, who happens to be the love interest of Jazzman (Johnu). Version 1 (circa 1982): Michael McCray- lead vocal, Bevin Turnbull-synthesizers, piano, B3 organ, Stew Cutler- guitar, Debbie Gilcrest, Wanda, Hamlet- background vocals, Erroll Bedward-drum programming Version 2 (circa 2014) Bevin Turnbull-keyboards, background vocals

FAITH ISLANDS of the Caribbean
In 1994 I visited Montserrat with my Mom. That was the year before the volcano. That island is where my maternal grandmother was born. About 10 years later I visited Tortola, where my Dad's folks were from. I've returned therea 3 more times after that; the latest time with my sister. Our family owns about 30 acres on Tortola overlooking Roadtown, the CAPITAL. Relatively unspoiled, Tortola only has about 25,000 inhabitants. I see it as the perfect paradise to retire to. However, we have some work to do here first. I'd like to build The Bronx Renaissance Community theatre with proper funding and sustained support from our patrons, so that when I'm no longer here, our legacy in the arts and culture will live on. Our next podcasts will be aimed at developing substantial funding. We need your help! BxRCTheatre.org is our website

After:NEW JAZZ CITY w/Maria Wilson
Bevin and Maria casually discuss the delightfully successful event held on Sunday, June 27th at the Marriott Residence Inn in The Bronx. Audience members were pleased and surprised about the newly-developed area in which the hotel is located. Free parking was provided and they were able to enjoy the flower garden environment on the patio, where the show took place. The sound outside the hotel was especially acoustically friendly. Nothing got too loud, yet the actors and singers were heard clearly, as the audience was close up. They interacted enthusiastically with our group in that unique intimate setting. They also danced spiritedly-- in particular-- to the Caribbean sounds of originals--MONTSERRAT and TORTOLA, as well as the Gospel-influenced PREACHER by Horace Silver. This was only a preview of NEW JAZZ CITY: the musical (part 2). We look to present the complete show, replete with costumes, props, lighting, etc. at the brand new BRONX YMCA. Please check our future podcasts and updates on BxRCTheatre.org for specific dates and times. On the 27th Bevin Turnbull (keyboards, trumpet, drums, vocals) was joined by Rev Dr. Charles Butler-bass, John Cooksey-drums, Trevaughn Thomas, flugelhorn, Dr. Chip Shelton- flute & bass clarinet, Juan Pimentel-congas, Terri Davis-vocals & percussion Staging Director- Rey Allen Actors- Keesha Miller as Sherri, Linden Anderson as Reverend Maxwell Youth Performers- Milan Bookal, Jasen Bennett, Chelsea Reid, Allen Rey Narrators- June & Courtney Walcott

YET TO BE WRITTEN: Phyllis Hyman
Another conversation with Harry Evans-- PR with Philadelphia International Records. In this episode, our main subject is the magnificent Phyllis Hyman and her career. Every vocal I have written since meeting her has been influenced by her. It's as if for decades I've been trying to complete a song she requested so long ago. . . I'm still workin on it!

TRUE BLUE: Ray Blue
A relaxed conversation with the world-renowned, Ray Blue--tenor saxophonist, composer and educator. This episode kicks off with one of my original themes, MONTSERRAT (where my maternal grandparents were from) then segues into Ray's title cut, WORK. The rhythmic similarity is striking, yet I feature synthesizers while Ray remains true blue to acoustic piano and live drums accompanying him. One would hardly guess that I only met Ray about a month ago, where I sat in on trumpet with his group in Peekskill, New York. That day one of the first things I said to him was notwithstanding his own personal style, that he reminded me of George Coleman, who played sax with Miles Davis in the 1960s. He seemed kind of flattered, telling me, "George is my teacher. I recently had my regular lesson with him!" Ray underscores our talk with his renditions of standards--EVERYTHING HAPPENS TO ME and finally, THAT'S ALL. Our customary closing is of course, CLOCKTIME by B. Turnbull.
