Ep. 83: Fish in the Basement & Other Signs of Unchecked Capitalism: How Storytelling Wins Elections
This week on Beyond Resistance, Sarah and Jennifer are bringing the vibes, the stories, and maybe a few fish-in-the-basement flashbacks. They kick things off by talking about the growing wave of progressive wins around the country and what those victories might mean for the future of Democratic politics. The big takeaway? Voters aren't just looking for a party label anymore—they want fighters, vision, and candidates who actually show up. The conversation then shifts to one of Michigan's hottest political topics: AI, data centers, and who should benefit from the technology revolution. Sarah shares why she's fired up about Dr. Abdul El-Sayed's approach to AI regulation—one that balances innovation, environmental responsibility, and making sure communities, not just billionaires, reap the rewards. But the heart of this episode is all about storytelling. Why do some messages stick while others fade away? Sarah and Jennifer explore how real stories—from campaign trails, front porches, floods, and everyday life—have the power to change minds, build empathy, and move people to action. From conversations with skeptical voters to personal experiences with public assistance and disaster recovery, they show how storytelling turns political talking points into human connection. If you're a candidate, activist, organizer, or just someone trying to make a difference, this episode is your reminder: facts matter, but stories are what people remember. And yes, you'll hear about a MAGA voter, a collapsing fair booth roof, and fish swimming in a flooded basement. Politics is weird sometimes. Ep. 82: Cathedral Builders & Chaos Gremlins: Why Democrats Need a Long Game (and Less Drama)
This week, Jennifer and Sarah take a ride through Democratic strategy, primary-season drama, and why Jennifer has officially reached her Hunter Biden saturation point. From hot takes on New York’s political shakeups to a passionate plea for Democrats to stop helping Republicans do their messaging for them, this episode is equal parts organizing wisdom and friendly ranting. Highlights include: • Why authenticity beats focus groups every time. • The danger of treating one candidate as the face of an entire movement. • Abdul El-Sayed’s Michigan-flavored campaign strategy (yes, water-skiing counts as political analysis now). • How purity politics can accidentally sabotage progress. • Why healthy primaries can strengthen a party instead of tearing it apart. • The difference between being right and being strategic. (Spoiler: winning requires both.) The heart of this episode is cathedral building—doing work today for victories that may not arrive tomorrow, next year, or even in your political lifetime. Jennifer and Sarah explore the idea that real change happens when people commit to building something bigger than themselves, election cycle after election cycle. And yes, they reference two Broadway favorites that capture this spirit: • “Keep Marching” from Suffs • “The Story of Tonight” and “The Schuyler Sisters” (which includes the famous theme about planting seeds in a garden you never get to see) from Hamilton Check them out becasue these songs beautifully capture the episode’s core message: sometimes the most important work is building a future you may never personally see. Bottom line: Think long-term. Build relationships. Run candidates. Stay strategic. Stop doom-scrolling. Start cathedral-building. 🏗️🎧 For the Blueprint and more on Beyond Resistance: beyondresistancepod.com

Ep. 81: How to Win Hearts, Minds, and Maybe a Few Rural Voters
What if the secret to saving democracy isn't another viral tweet, campaign ad, or hot take—but a conversation on a front porch? This week on Beyond Resistance, Jennifer and Sarah sit down with Chloe Maxmin—former Maine state senator, co-founder of Dirt Road Organizing, and co-author of Dirt Road Revival: How to Rebuild Rural Politics and Why Our Future Depends on It. Chloe shares why she left elected office, how burnout led her back to organizing, and why rural communities may hold the key to building a stronger, more representative democracy. The conversation dives into deep canvassing, relationship-based organizing, and why treating voters like human beings instead of spreadsheet cells might actually work (wild concept, we know). Chloe explains why values matter more than party labels, why trust is built one conversation at a time, and why the future of progressive power runs straight through rural America. Plus: childhood adventures, lake stories, grass-root eating (literally), and proof that some of the best political lessons come from talking—not shouting. Learn more: 🌱 Dirt Road Organizing: dirtroadorganizing.org ❤️🔥 Beyond Resistance: beyondresistancepod.com 🎒 Homework Assignment If this episode lit a fire under you, here's your assignment: 📝 Read Dirt Road Revival by Chloe Maxmin and Canyon Woodward 📝 Add to your reading list: 📘 The Left Behind by Robert Wuthnow 📕 The Politics of Resentment by Katherine Cramer 📝 Have one real conversation with someone whose politics are different from yours. 📝 Don't start with politics. Start with life. Ask about their family, their community, their garden, their worries, or what they're streaming right now. 📝 Listen longer than you talk. Because democracy isn't built by winning arguments. It's built by building relationships. 🌻🚪☕

Ep. 80: Duty Runs Deep (and So Does the Tea on Rural Politics)
This episode of Beyond Resistance is giving ✨road trip energy meets grassroots glow-up✨ as Sarah and Jennifer recap their Rural Summit takeover—complete with a giant hand-drawn Michigan map (shoutout to supportive husbands everywhere) and a whole lotta blue dots in red spaces. The vibes? Hopeful, scrappy, and very “we’re done waiting.” They break down their 5-step blueprint for building blue power in red communities—real talk, not theory. Think: finding your people, doing the actual work, and playing the long game (because spoiler: it’s not a one-election-cycle kinda glow-up). Also: if you think you’re “already doing it,” congrats—but go deeper. There’s always another level. Then enter Ben Ambrose—Marine vet, policy brain, farmer-adjacent realist, and Congressional candidate—who’s here to say: rural communities aren’t red, they’re underrepresented. Key moments: 🌾 Farmers are carrying billions in the economy . . . and also stress, debt, and way too many broken systems 💸 “Livable wage” isn’t a buzzword—it’s the whole ballgame 🧠 Mental health in rural America? Underrated. Underserved. Urgent. 🛠️ Trade schools deserve WAY more respect (and funding, let’s be real) 📞 Campaign tip of the day: get comfy asking for money—awkward builds character Big takeaway: This isn’t about political labels—it’s about people. And if you’re waiting for someone else to fix your community . . . plot twist: it’s you. 💥 Moral of the episode: Don’t wait. Start something. Build something. Be the dang blue dot—and then connect them. To learn more about Ben Ambrose & his campaign: ambrose4congress.com To download the Blueprint or learn more about the pod: beyondresistancepod.com

Ep. 79: It Shouldn’t Be This Hard: A Millennial Runs for Office (and We’re Taking Notes) 💁♀️🗳️
This episode is serving equal parts "real talk" and "let’s-get-our-act-together energy". Jennifer flies solo (Sarah is off living her best restorative life—boundaries queen 👑) and kicks things off with a spicy-but-relatable monologue on patriotism, political burnout, and why reclaiming joy in today’s chaos feels . . . complicated. From fireworks with protest signs to side-eyeing corporate America, this intro hits on a big theme in today’s political podcast space: how everyday people navigate values, consumer choices, and civic engagement without completely losing it. Spoiler: you don’t have to sit it out—you just might remix it. Then we meet our main character moment: Katrina Manetta, millennial candidate for Michigan State House and proof that grassroots politics is alive and very caffeinated. Katrina shares how she helped grow a scrappy coffee shop meetup into a 1,500+ person organizing force in a red-leaning county—because apparently, democracy does thrive when people stop doomscrolling and start showing up. The convo goes deep on issues driving modern voters (hello, $8K insurance deductibles and “why is everything so expensive?”), plus why younger candidates are pushing back on the “work harder” narrative with a bold “nah, the system should work better.” Katrina drops some 🔥 campaign strategy too—think door knocking, meeting voters where they’re at, and skipping party labels to actually connect with the ever-growing “politically exhausted but still voting” crowd. It’s a masterclass in how to win over independent voters and rebuild trust in American politics, one convo at a time. Also: cat moms, no Netflix, and the bold admission that euchre is…not for everyone. You’re welcome. Ep. 78: Hot Mess to Real Talk: Why Authenticity Wins Elections
This episode of Beyond Resistance is giving “we hit record and let the vibes lead” — and honestly? It works. When a guest reschedule turns into a real talk convo, hosts Sarah Schulz and Jennifer Austin dive into what actually builds blue power in red communities: authenticity, values, and not pretending you’ve got it all together. From “hot mess mornings” to real-life campaign lessons, this political podcast episode breaks down why authentic leadership isn’t just nice to have—it’s a winning strategy. In a world full of over-polished messaging (and let’s be real . . . AI-ed emails), voters are craving something radical: real people. The conversation gets into the messy middle of politics—how candidates can own mistakes, grow, and still stand strong in their values. Because spoiler alert: being perfect isn’t the goal . . . being honest is. This is especially relevant for anyone interested in grassroots organizing, campaign strategy, and voter engagement in swing or red districts. They also unpack how distractions in political messaging (👀 culture war issues) can pull focus from real “kitchen table” priorities—and why staying grounded in your core values matters more than chasing every narrative. Whether you’re a candidate, organizer, or just politically curious, this episode is basically your reminder that winning hearts (and elections) starts with being real. Plus: snack talk at the end 'cause even organizers need a lil treat. 🎧 Tune in for insights on: • Authentic political storytelling • Building trust with voters • Campaign messaging that actually lands • Growing a political movement from the ground up Like, share, subscribe . . . you know the drill 💅 To learn more about Beyond Resistance: beyondresistancepod.com

Ep. 77: Lonely Men, Dragons & Democracy: A Very Unhinged Political Debate 🐉🔥
This week on Beyond Resistance, your favorite truth-telling duo takes a detour from the usual political interview podcast format and brings the vibes—equal parts thoughtful, spicy, and just a little chaotic. We kick things off with a real-talk convo about the so-called male loneliness epidemic and why blaming women (again? really?) misses the point entirely. Jennifer and Sarah unpack how culture, patriarchy, and changing expectations are reshaping masculinity—and why accountability is the plot twist we actually need. Then we get into one of the juiciest themes in modern political discourse: the danger of black-and-white thinking. From progressive politics to national debates, the hosts dig into how rigid “all-or-nothing” mindsets can stall real progress—and why nuance is the unsung hero of effective political strategy in America right now. But wait—there’s a new segment in town: Snap Debate 🎤🔥 Think rapid-fire takes meets political commentary podcast energy. Topics range from “dinosaurs vs. dragons” (serious policy implications, obviously) to incremental change vs. sweeping reform—aka the debate at the heart of Democratic strategy, grassroots organizing, and every cable news panel ever. They also tackle whether political labels (progressive, moderate, etc.) actually help or just box us in—and how ditching labels at the local level might be the key to building real coalition power. If you’re into progressive politics, grassroots activism, and political podcast discussions that feel like group chat energy but smarter—this episode is your jam. ✨ Come for the hot takes, stay for the nuanced political analysis, leave questioning everything (in a good way). Ep. 76: Young Voters Are Not Okay (And Rebecca Amidon Is Done Waiting)
This week on Beyond Resistance, we’re back from grad party chaos (yes, there were teens, snacks, and existential dread about the economy) and diving straight into the real political conversation America is having right now: young voters are not okay—and they’re not buying the same old political messaging either. Enter Rebecca Amidon, Democratic candidate for Michigan Senate, mom, professor, and low-key expert in “chicken math” (you’ll get it). She’s running a grassroots campaign in a red district, proving once again that local politics + real talk = the future of progressive politics. We get into the big stuff shaping the 2026 election cycle: economic anxiety, student debt, childcare costs that rival a mortgage, and why Gen Z voters are side-eyeing both parties. If you’ve been wondering why voter engagement feels chaotic lately—this is your political podcast explainer. Rebecca shares how navigating healthcare, Medicaid, and public assistance personally flipped the switch from “casually concerned citizen” to “fine, I’ll run for office.” It’s giving major American democracy reboot energy. We also unpack how to win elections in red communities: it’s less about party labels and more about talking real issues like rural healthcare access, public education funding, and wages. (Spoiler: people care about surviving more than slogans.) Oh—and we go there on women in politics. From “smile more” nonsense to impossible perfection standards, this episode is a masterclass in why authentic leadership matters in today’s political landscape. 🔥 If you’re into political podcasts, grassroots campaigns, or just trying to figure out what the heck is happening with U.S. politics right now—this episode’s for you. Ep. 75: Go Big or Go . . . Start a Commune?
This week on Beyond Resistance, Sarah and Jennifer kick things off in their natural state: fired up, slightly chaotic, and deeply unimpressed with . . . everything. From eyebrow-raising political corruption to policies that make you want to scream into the void, this episode is part rant, part therapy session, part strategy meeting. But don’t worry—there’s a plot twist. 💥 Enter the mindset of the week: “Go Big or Go Home.” Not just a cute slogan—it’s the energy shift your organizing, campaigning, and honestly your whole life might need right now. ✨ In this episode: • Why playing it safe is giving 2012 energy (and that’s not a compliment) • The psychology of why people stay loyal to . . . questionable choices • How “go big” shows up locally—from protests to parades to filling entire country clubs (yes, really) • Why bold ideas, not cautious ones, actually win people over • And how even a Midwest card game is out here teaching us life lessons Also featured: 🏋️♀️ rage-lifting as coping 🏃♀️ running . . . briefly . . . . and then regretting it 🌱 an ongoing, slightly serious plan to start a commune if things keep spiraling The takeaway? Playing small keeps you stuck. Whether you’re organizing, running for office, or just figuring out how to show up in your community—you have every right to take up space. So take it. Loudly. 🎯 Because the future? It’s not built by people hedging their bets. It’s built by people who say, “yeah, let’s go for it”—and then actually do. 🎧 Listen now and consider this your official permission slip to go big. Ep. 74: Outrage Fatigue & Other Personality Traits
This week’s episode is what happens when your guest cancels and you hit record anyway—aka pure, unfiltered chaotic good energy. Sarah and Jennifer dive headfirst into a grab bag of what’s breaking their brains (and maybe yours too). ✨ Main character energy topics include: • Gerrymandering rage (yes, still 😒) and why it’s not just annoying—it’s fundamentally messing with representation. • “Outrage fatigue” being VERY real. Like, how many times can you yell at the news before you need a nap? • Fear vs. hope in politics: fear gets clicks but hope actually builds movements (and wins elections 👀). • That viral “draft panic” moment and how misinformation + vibes = unnecessary spiraling. 💡 Hot take: Fear isn’t just a feeling—it’s a strategy. And when we’re exhausted and scared, we’re way easier to manipulate. Love that for us. (Just kidding, we hate it here.) But not all is doomscrolling and despair: • Campaigns rooted in hope and vision (not mudslinging) are having a moment. • Locally, positive, people-first organizing is where the real magic happens. • Exhibit A: the Blue Gala glow-up—from “should we even do this?” to sold-out, big-money, big-energy community power. 🎯 Big takeaway: Stay aware, question the panic, lead with hope, and keep showing up. Because building power locally isn’t a one-season show—it’s a long game, baby. 🎧 Come for the political tea, stay for the relatable exhaustion and occasional existential dread (but like, make it productive). Ep. 73: Unopposed? Not on Our Watch 💅
This week on Beyond Resistance, Sarah and Jennifer sit down with Ashley Painter—a mom, photographer, social worker-in-progress, and absolute powerhouse running for South Carolina State House in a district that’s . . . let’s just say not exactly a walk in the park. Ashley didn’t come from political privilege—she came from foster care, real-life struggle, and a deep understanding of what it means when government actually fails people. And instead of yelling into the void (relatable), she decided to run for office. Casual. In this episode, we get into: • Why running in a deep red, gerrymandered district still matters (spoiler: it matters A LOT) • How leaving seats uncontested = literally handing over power (hard pass) • The real barriers to running for office—like childcare, low pay, and systems built for literally anyone except normal people • What happens when you challenge an extremist incumbent . . . and he suddenly starts writing you handwritten letters 👀 Ashley breaks it down: this isn’t just about winning one election—it’s about showing up, shifting the narrative, and making sure voters actually have a choice. Because democracy without options? Not the vibe. Also, yes—there’s talk of Star Wars, soup supremacy, and crocheting, because we’re multidimensional humans, thank you very much. ✨ Bottom line: Even when the odds are stacked, stepping up is how we start to win. Or at the very least, how we stop losing quietly. 🎧 Hit play if you believe “impossible” is just a phase. Ep. 72: Knock Doors, Get Wins (Repeat Until November)
Fresh off a BIG special election win (like . . . historic-level big), we’re not taking a victory lap—we’re hitting replay on how it happened and what comes next. In this episode of Beyond Resistance, we’re joined by Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel to break down the anatomy of a landslide and why grassroots energy is having a moment right now. From 10,000 doors knocked in just four days to voters literally caravanning to the polls (!!), this win wasn’t luck—it was people-powered momentum. We dig into what actually moved voters (hint: not jargon, but real “kitchen table” issues people are living every day) and why campaigns need to stop obsessing over quantity and start focusing on quality conversations. Also: why writing off “unwinnable” areas is a losing strategy—and how showing up everywhere is the real cheat code. There’s also a reality check: wins like this don’t magically become “blue waves.” You build them. Sustain them. Then do it all over again. Oh—and because we keep things fun, we wrap with election day superstitions (including White Castle burgers as a winning strategy 🍔💀). TL;DR: Grassroots works. Authenticity wins. Doomscrolling loses. If you’ve been waiting for a sign to get off the couch and into the fight . . . this is it. 🚀 To learn more about Beyond resistance and the Blueprint for Building Blue Power: beyondresistancepod.com @MIDemocraticParty

Ep. 71: Grassroots, Grit, and a 20-Point Mic Drop
Episode Notes: Midterm Mode Activated 🚀 + A Big Win (But No Chill Yet) We’re back, and yeah . . . it’s official: midterm mode is ON. Like, two-feet-on-the-gas, cancel-your-chill-plans ON . . . In this episode, we sit down with Senator-elect Chedrick Greene—Marine vet, retired firefighter, community-rooted leader, and honestly . . . kind of the main character right now—fresh off a major special election win in Michigan’s 35th district. And when we say big win, we mean BIG. Think flipping expectations, winning across communities, and turning “Dems can't win in Midland” into “hold my clipboard.” But before you pop the champagne—Chedrick is very clear: this is not a victory lap moment. It’s a “cool, now double the work” situation. The November election is coming fast, turnout will be way higher, and the fight is just getting started. We get into: 📋 What election night really feels like (spoiler: zero sleep + all the feelings) 📋 How authentic, no-script conversations beat polished talking points every time 📋 Why connecting across differences isn’t just nice—it’s effective 📋 Leading with empathy in a world that low-key rewards the opposite 📋 And how grassroots energy (aka real people doing real work) still wins Also: there’s a moment about therapy, growth, and being human that hits harder than your group chat at 2am. Just saying. Bottom line: this episode is part celebration, part reality check, and part “okay, let’s get back to work.” Because winning once? Great. Winning again? Ep. 70: Ten Years, No Breaks, One Big Win
Okay, so . . . we did a thing. Chedrick Greene won—and not in a squeaker, not in a nail-biter, but in a full-on “wait, is that number correct??” kind of way. 🎉 In this episode of Beyond Resistance, we’re breaking down what actually happened in Michigan’s 35th—and spoiler alert: it wasn’t luck, vibes, or a last-minute campaign miracle. This was years in the making. Like . . . a decade of organizing, relationship-building, losing, learning, and showing up anyway kind of years. We get into: 💖 Why the “they just had more money” excuse is… let’s call it creative fiction 💖 How a district that barely leaned blue suddenly swung nearly 20 points (yes, really) 💖 What it felt like to be in the room when the win finally hit (tears, cheers, mild disbelief) 💖 And why Republicans saying “we didn’t even try” might not be the flex they think it is 😅 We also zoom out with Senator Darrin Camilleri to talk about the bigger picture: how you identify winnable places, why organizing in “red” communities actually works, and what it takes to build something that lasts longer than a single election cycle. Bottom line: This isn’t just a win—it’s proof that the long, unglamorous, frustrating work of building power actually pays off. And yeah . . .we’re a little fired up about it. 💙🔥 To learn more about Chedrick Greene: chedrickgreene.com To learn more about Senator Darrin Camilleri: darrincamilleri.com To learn more about Beyond Resistance and download the Blueprint: beyondresistancepod.com #Michigan #Senate #Politics #Midterms

Ep. 69: Grassroots Energy Meets Petty Reactions: Joanna Whaley Joins the Pod
Change is hard. Democracy is messy. And sometimes your biggest resistance comes from . . .your own side. 😬 This week on Beyond Resistance, hosts Sarah Schulz and Jennifer Austin get fired up (shocking, we know) talking about what happens when grassroots candidates start winning—and the political establishment absolutely does not take it well. Enter Joanna Whaley, a Michigan State House candidate who is doing the radical thing of actually centering her community, knocking doors, and talking about real issues instead of playing inside-baseball politics. The result? Momentum, excitement, and some truly unhinged pushback that takes the conversation way off the issues and into the “are we seriously doing this?” zone. This episode unpacks the realities of Democratic primaries, entitlement in politics, and why attacking someone’s identity is a giant red flag for anyone claiming to believe in democracy. Joanna, meanwhile, stays refreshingly focused on service, representation, and showing up—because that’s what voters actually care about. It’s candid. It’s spicy. It’s occasionally a little ragey. And it’s also a powerful reminder that building real political power means choosing courage over comfort and people over ego. If you like your politics honest, your candidates authentic, and your podcasts with a side of righteous side-eye, this one’s for you. 🎧🔥 To learn more about Joanna's campaign: joannawhaley.com To download the Blueprint and learn more about Beyond Resistance: beyondresistancepod.com

Ep. 68: Unwinnable on Paper, Powerful in Practice: Funding Blue Campaigns in Red States
What if the secret to winning elections is . . . running everywhere, even where Democrats “can’t win”? 👀 This week on Beyond Resistance, we’re joined by Michele Hornish, founder and executive director of Every State Blue, to blow up some tired political myths and make a bold case for funding candidates in the reddest of red districts. Michele breaks down why progressive organizing, grassroots fundraising, and local elections matter way more than the political establishment admits. We talk about her “bottom‑up bathtub” funding model (yes, it’s a thing), why uncontested races are quietly killing democracy, and how even a few thousand dollars can spark a butterfly effect that shifts culture, turnout, and long‑term power. Along the way, we cover: 💖 Why “winnability” is wildly overrated in modern politics 💖 How state legislatures became laboratories for extremism 💖 The difference between voter suppression and voter depression 💖 Why accountability starts with simply showing up on the ballot 💖 How running a dignified campaign can change a community—even if you lose This episode is a must‑listen for anyone who’s tired of Democrats playing defense while extremists run unopposed. It’s smart, hopeful, a little spicy, and full of real talk about building blue power in red and rural America. Ep. 67: Don’t Bring a Rulebook to a Knife Fight: How Democrats Can Actually Win Again with Kate Barr
- - What happens when you bring a behavioral scientist, a rigged map, and a whole lot of “why are we still doing it this way?” energy into one political podcast episode? Absolute fire. 🔥 This week on Beyond Resistance, we’re joined by Kate Barr — organizer, founder of the Can’t Win Victory Fund, and the woman who famously ran as an openly fake Republican to expose gerrymandering from the inside. Yes, really. We dive into why losing elections can actually be a winning political strategy, how gerrymandered districts warp democracy, and what it really takes to build progressive power in red states. From North Carolina to Michigan, this conversation gets honest about electoral reform, grassroots organizing, unaffiliated voters, and why the Democratic establishment keeps missing obvious opportunities to win. Along the way, we talk about: - Gerrymandering and redistricting (because democracy deserves better maps) - Why political norms are overrated when democracy is on the line - How to organize in deep-red districts without losing your mind - Fighting for fair elections, voting rights, and long-term political strategy - What it means to “bring a knife to a knife fight” in modern American politics If you’re into progressive politics podcasts, election reform, independent voters, or stories about people breaking the rules to fix democracy — this episode is for you. Ep. 66: Be the Dragon You Want to See In the World: Hope, Hard Truths, and a Sheriff Who Gets It
What do dragons, Disney adults, and a sheriff running for governor have in common? Apparently . . . this episode of Beyond Resistance. Hosts Sarah Schulz and Jennifer Austin kick things off fired all the way up—processing the heavy reality of misogyny, online radicalization, and why being a woman in modern politics can feel like playing defense 24/7. From there, they pivot to something we desperately need in this political moment: hope that doesn’t feel fake. Enter Sheriff Chris Swanson, Genesee County’s top cop, longtime union member, national voice on criminal justice reform, and candidate for Michigan governor. In one of our most grounded and human conversations yet, Swanson talks about servant leadership, why actions matter more than party labels, and how you actually build trust across political divides—especially in red communities. This episode dives into progressive politics, grassroots organizing, and what it really means to build blue power in red areas without talking down to people. You’ll hear about Swanson’s nationally recognized IGNITE jail education program, coalition‑building that leads to real voter crossover, and why meeting people where they are is the future of Democratic strategy. And yes—you’ll also hear about Auto World, Disney World, and why paying attention to vibes might be an underrated political skill. If you’re into political podcasts, Democratic strategy, state and local politics, or how to win elections without selling your soul, this episode is for you. Ep. 65: Democracy Weekend: Joy, Chaos, Repeat
This week on Beyond Resistance, Sarah and Jennifer are fresh off what can only be described as a ✨Very Democratic✨ long weekend in Detroit — and they have thoughts. From a boho Airbnb near Eastern Market to Broadway tears at Suffs, to heels, hats, marching bands, DJ booths, and yes . . . Robert’s Rules of Order, this episode is your inside scoop on the Michigan Democratic Party’s record breaking nominating convention. (Over 7,200 people! Democracy said “bring snacks.”) They break down the big wins (hello, progressive sweep 👋), the surprise moments, the speeches that brought the room to its feet, and the boos that absolutely did not — plus why both can be true at the same time. You’ll hear reflections on Garlin Gilchrist, Eli Savit, Abdul El Sayed, Mallory McMorrow, Haley Stevens, and why joy, hoopla, and a little chaos might actually be part of doing democracy right. There’s also a candid convo about movement tensions, generational dynamics, political theater (literal and figurative), tech snafus, ranked choice voting superfans, and why peanut butter M&Ms are a critical failure point in any convention planning. Oh — and Jennifer got an award, Sarah brought a cooler, and Beyond Resistance tabled at the convention chatting with rural Dems building blue power where it’s hardest (and most necessary). If you’ve ever wondered what a modern political convention really looks like — messy, loud, joyful, exhausting, and hopeful — this episode is for you. Democracy is a team sport. Ep. 64: Data-Driven, Heart-Led, Cold-Averse: A real-talk campaign convo with Lisa McIntyre
In this episode of Beyond Resistance, we sit down with Lisa McIntyre, candidate for Michigan State House (District 22), therapist, school board leader, mom of three, and all-around proof that local politics is where the real action happens. If you’re into progressive political podcasts, grassroots organizing, or conversations about how to actually win elections in swingy districts, this one’s for you. Lisa shares how her background in mental health, public education, and crisis management shaped her leadership during the chaos of COVID and why those skills matter more than ever in state-level politics. We talk about building transformational (not transactional) relationships with voters, using data and empathy to make decisions, and why showing up—again and again—is the secret sauce of effective campaigning. You’ll also hear what voters in Western Wayne County are really worried about right now (spoiler: affordability, schools, healthcare, and the future), how Democrats can grow a blue wave without alienating their neighbors, and why some political fights shouldn’t be partisan at all (clean water, special education, and basic human dignity, anyone?). It’s smart, practical, occasionally funny, and rooted in the belief that democracy works best when normal people step up and lead. If you’re searching for podcasts that yap about Democratic politics and honest conversations about building power in red and purple communities, press play. Ep. 63: The No Kings Debate: Why Everyone Needs to Chill (and Organize)
In this fiery episode of Beyond Resistance, Sarah and Jennifer dive headfirst into the great progressive debate of 2026: Do protests actually matter, or are we all just getting our steps in? Spoiler: they matter — a lot. Fresh off a wave of online hot‑takes claiming protest is pointless, your favorite co-hosts break down why collective action still moves hearts, shifts culture, and builds the kind of courage that flips very red communities blue. From No Kings rallies to mutual aid to the magic that happens when isolated Democrats in rural towns realize they aren’t alone, this conversation is part political therapy session, part organizing playbook. But that’s not all — we also go full tilt into the messy, nuanced stuff: data centers in Michigan (yes, AI needs water), the joy of not arguing with your relatives about revolutions at Easter dinner, and why black‑and‑white thinking is wrecking the progressive movement. Plus, Sarah and Jennifer share a behind‑the‑scenes look at taking Beyond Resistance on the road to Democratic conventions — and why they need your help to do it. If you love grassroots organizing, progressive politics, democracy‑saving strategies, or just want to hear two women lovingly drag both the far-left and the far-right with equal enthusiasm, this episode is for you. 💸 Want to help us spread the word IRL? Ep. 62: Joyful Domination & Other Casual Acts of Democracy: No Kings Edition
In this week’s episode of Beyond Resistance, Sarah and Jennifer come in fired up and ready to unpack the political circus we’re all trying to survive. From TSA chaos and ICE lurking in airports like the world’s least helpful mall cops, to the nonstop stress being cooked up in D.C., this episode is basically a masterclass in modern activism, community organizing, and staying sane in an authoritarian‑ish era. But that’s just the warm‑up. We’re also joined by community powerhouses Lara Bell Phillips and Allison Wilcox, two of the brilliant minds behind local Midland, MI organizing efforts and the upcoming No Kings 3 rally. They share the real behind‑the‑scenes: the spreadsheets, the press releases, the group chats, the protest T‑shirts (important), and the “find your people” magic that transforms isolated blue dots into vibrant, connected communities. If you’ve ever wondered how to energize a red‑leaning area, build a grassroots movement, or host your own rally without spontaneously combusting, this episode breaks it all down with humor, honesty, and just the right amount of righteous rage. We talk strategy. We talk safety. We talk joyful domination (yes, really). And we talk about why showing up — even if it’s 50 people getting flipped off by pickup trucks — actually shifts democracy. Whether you're a seasoned organizer or a “politics podcast listener who swears they’re not getting involved” (yet), this episode gives you actionable steps, community inspiration, and all the vibes of a group chat you absolutely want to be part of. Listen in. Get inspired. Then go make some good trouble. For more on Beyond Resistance and the Blueprint for Building Blue Power, visit beyondresistancepod.com. Ep. 61: Year-Round Organizing: Not Election Season Thirst Trap - with Justin Onwenu
This week on Beyond Resistance, Sarah and Jennifer are fired up (yes, again) and diving into what it really takes to build Democratic power, increase voter turnout, and move beyond the “blue wave will save us” magical thinking. Spoiler: it won’t. (Sorry, internet commenters.) We’re joined by Justin Onwenu, Detroit-born organizer, environmental justice advocate, law professor, economic opportunity champion — and now candidate for Michigan State Senate District 1. Justin’s resume is so packed we had to fact-check whether he sleeps. (Unclear.) In this energizing conversation, we get real about: * Why communities like Detroit and Downriver have some of the lowest turnout in the state — and how year-round organizing (not election-season drive-bys) can fix it * How environmental justice, workers’ rights, and neighborhood investment are inseparable from winning sustainable political power * What it means to build transformational relationships instead of transactional campaigns — the kind that actually move voters, organizers, and future leaders * Why everyday people (yes, including you) are smarter than political consultants give them credit for * How state governments can “Trump-proof” their communities through bold policy on voting rights, immigration, affordability, and more Also: co-pay trauma stories, the best places to eat in Detroit, friendship rants, and a little shade at people who think centrism means “never talk about social issues again.” If you’re into progressive politics, grassroots organizing, community power, or just love hearing leaders talk like actual humans, this is your episode. Tune in, get inspired, and let’s build something real — beyond resistance. Ep. 60: Karen McDonald Gets Real About Courage, Community & the Chaos of Modern Politics
In this fiery and fun episode of Beyond Resistance, Sarah and Jennifer come in hot, kicking things off with what might be the most passionate political rant you’ll hear all week (Jim Clyburn, we’re looking at you). From aging incumbents to billionaire adjacent self funders, this one dives deep into the realities of modern campaigns, grassroots organizing, and why everyday people deserve leaders who actually get what everyday life feels like. Then they sit down with Karen McDonald, Oakland County Prosecutor and Democratic candidate for Michigan Attorney General—and honestly? She delivers. Big time. Karen opens up about growing up working class, raising five kids, surviving the Trump era, and becoming nationally known for holding the Oxford school shooter’s parents accountable. She also gets wonderfully candid about burnout, sewing as self care, and what it’s like running for office while refusing to compromise your core values. Expect sharp insights, relatable laughs, and real talk about courage, community, and the stakes of 2026. If you care about political organizing, grassroots power, Michigan politics, elections, or how local leaders can fight national extremism, this episode is your jam. Plus, you’ll learn which items hold sentimental value for our hosts and guest (spoiler: Christmas ornaments and a grandpa’s diploma make the cut). 🎧 Listen now and get inspired to build blue power in red communities—because resistance was just the beginning. @karenmcdonaldformi

Ep. 59: From Cancer Survivor to Candidate: Why Rhonda Yates Isn’t Backing Down
This week on Beyond Resistance, Sarah and Jennifer come in hot — like “are-you-really-going-to-fund-Trump’s-random-war?” hot. We kick things off with a fiery breakdown of Democratic wobbliness in Congress, political “poison pill” bills, and why doing your own Googling might just save democracy (or at least your group chat). It’s the kind of cathartic political‑podcast energy that pairs perfectly with rage‑cleaning or panic‑scrolling. Then we dive into an inspiring, deeply human conversation with Rhonda Yates, a Democrat running for Michigan’s 55th State House District. Rhonda’s story hits all the notes: rural Mississippi roots, linguistics professor, oncology nurse, cancer survivor twice over, union member, and somehow still a person who volunteers at the library. Basically the political‑organizing superhero the MCU should call. Rhonda talks about what pushed her to run — including witnessing ICE detain a naturalized U.S. veteran — and why state-level politics matter more than ever. We dig into health care nightmares, safe staffing for nurses, skyrocketing medical costs, mental health access, and why real democracy requires leaving our curated bubbles and actually listening to voters (even the ones who send you nasty emails). If you’re into progressive politics, grassroots organizing, election strategy, or just want a political podcast that doesn’t make you want to crawl into a culvert and live among raccoons, this episode is for you. Bonus: You’ll also hear how thrifting, cross-stitch, and union power somehow end up in the same conversation — which honestly feels like peak Midwest political‑pod energy. Ep. 58: Vote for Ethan! He’s . . . Normal? A Wildly Refreshing Political Conversation
This week on Beyond Resistance, Sarah and Jennifer are fired up (shocking, we know) — and they’re taking you from “kitchen table issues” to the wild world of real-life political chaos, media buzz, and the everyday struggles Americans are carrying everywhere except an actual kitchen table. They dive deep with Ethan Wechtaluk, a smart, grounded, actually normal human running for Congress in Maryland’s 6th District. Ethan’s a dad, a long-time public servant, a first-generation activist-at-heart, and—oh yeah—a Virginia Tech shooting survivor with powerful insight into what political courage really means. He talks candidly about what pushed him from political burnout into political action (spoiler: Congress voting like it’s still 1994 didn’t help). From gun safety reform to immigration, affordability, veteran care, and accountability within the Democratic Party itself, Ethan’s got the receipts, the rage, and the resolve, and he knows what it means to run in a “swingy” district during a high stakes 2026 election. Ethan may call himself “normal,” but his perspective on democracy, community power, and what Congress should be doing hits anything but ordinary. Stick around for the lighter side too: backyard BBQ debates, legendary deviled eggs, and Jennifer’s ongoing war against eating corn like a raccoon. If you care about saving democracy, electing real people, or just love a political podcast that sounds like two friends ranting in the car after a school board meeting, this one’s for you. Ep. 57: From Wu Tang to One Team: Curtis Hertel’s Guide to Fixing the Party
Strap in, organizers and blue state dreamers — this week on Beyond Resistance, Sarah and Jennifer sit down with Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel Jr. for a conversation that’s equal parts real talk, strategy session, and “wait… did he really just say Wu Tang Clan?” vibes. Curtis brings the heat on what went wrong in 2024, what gives him hope heading into 2026, and why listening — like actual listening — might be the secret sauce to rebuilding Democratic power across Michigan (and every other red leaning corner of the country). From grassroots organizing to dignity for working class voters to why community members—not consultants from Delaware—should be calling the shots, Curtis lays out a blueprint that’s both refreshingly honest and totally actionable. You’ll hear stories about Midland’s slow but mighty march left, the pitfalls of transactional politics, the struggle to rebuild trust in communities that felt abandoned, and the surprising amount of wisdom gained from knock down losses. Plus, Curtis shares his “comeback playlist,” his multigenerational family story of public service, and a childhood memory involving a red wagon that will melt even the most hardened organizer’s heart. If you’re fired up about building blue power in red places, this episode is basically your new caffeine source. Ep. 56: From Pasties to Power: How Callie Barr Plans to Flip the North
Strap in, snowflakes (the avalanche kind, not the internet kind) — this week’s episode brings the heat and the heart. Sarah and Jennifer sit down with Callie Barr, Michigan’s 1st District congressional candidate, community powerhouse, veteran advocate, mom, attorney, mediocre violinist, and elite-level cookie distributor. Callie breaks down what it means to fight for an Affordable LIFE — literally. Local housing, Income, Food, Essential care. It’s not just a slogan; it’s a blueprint for dignity in rural America. From disappearing labor & delivery units to burnout in the healthcare workforce to the rising cost of just . . . existing, Callie gets real about what’s keeping Northern Michigan families up at night — and what she plans to do about it. We cover it all: • Why rural hospitals are hanging by a thread • How veterans get trapped in red tape instead of supported • What building a blue wave (or avalanche) looks like in a district roughly the size of a small nation • The power of tiny protests in tiny towns • Why yard signs actually do matter Plus, in true Beyond Resistance fashion, we wrap things up with the most contentious political question of our time: How do you eat a pasty? (Callie’s answer may shock you. Or unite you. TBD.) If you’ve ever wondered what real, boots-on-the-ground democracy-building sounds like — or if you just want to feel a little less alone in your own red pocket of the world — this episode is your new therapy session. Ep. 55: How to Flip a District and Stir an Old-Fashioned: Erin Petrey Edition
In this episode of Beyond Resistance, Sarah and Jennifer sit down with the unstoppable Erin Petrey — Kentucky native, bourbon expert, international policy nerd, former diplomat, job‑creator, Kentucky Colonel (yes, really), and now candidate for Congress in Kentucky’s trending‑blue 6th District. Basically: if LinkedIn were a person, it would be Erin — but way more fun. We dig into what it means to run a bold, progressive, populist campaign in a red‑leaning district, and Erin brings the fire on everything from affordability, living wages, healthcare reform, Citizens United, renewable energy, and how Democrats need a serious “hard reset.” She explains why running for something, not just against Trumpism, is the key to flipping red districts and rebuilding trust with working‑class voters everywhere. Erin also shares: 🔥 How she went from farm kid → Republican → Obama voter → progressive candidate 🔥 What voters in rural counties actually care about (spoiler: the same things urban voters do) 🔥 Why Democrats must stop talking down to rural communities 🔥 What it means to stand up to corporate PACs and build a true grassroots movement 🔥 How an old‑fashioned cocktail became the metaphor for her entire campaign (it actually works so check out her campaign video) If you’re working to build blue power in red communities, sharpen your grassroots organizing skills, or just want to hear a candidate with actual vision, this episode is your new favorite. In this episode of Beyond Resistance, Sarah and Jennifer dive into the political whirlwind shaking Michigan’s 35th Senate District — and yes, it’s officially the most-watched special election in the country. No pressure, right? Fresh off a jaw dropping primary win where he snagged 60% of the vote in a six way race, Democratic nominee Chedrick Greene returns to the pod to break it all down. We talk big turnout energy, what’s firing up voters across Michigan, and why this purple district just turned a very bright shade of blue on primary night. Chedrick dishes on: 🔥 What it’s like going from Marine → Fire Captain → Most Relatable Candidate in America™ 🔥 Why working class leadership is exactly what Michigan needs 🔥 How to stay calm when the entire country is watching (and apparently refreshing Michigan Advance on the daily) 🔥 The stark contrast between a candidate who shows up for the people vs. a multimillionaire heir who… does not Of course, we also unpack the wild politics brewing in Ohio, ICE related community concerns, democracy vibes, and why so many everyday people are stepping up to protect their freedoms (spoiler: because they have to). In this jam-packed episode of Beyond Resistance, Sarah and Jennifer sit down with Ace Deuce’s own Eli Savit — environmental lawyer, Washtenaw County Prosecutor, and candidate for Michigan Attorney General. Get ready, because this conversation goes everywhere: protecting democracy, taking on corporate bad actors, surviving feedback as community leaders, and why the SAVE Act is . . . let’s just say, not super democratic. Eli breaks down what’s at stake in Michigan (spoiler: a whole lot), why Attorneys General are democracy’s last line of defense, and how planning ahead for 2026 and 2028 elections isn’t optional — it’s urgent. Ep. 50: Democracy Is Not on Autopilot (And Garlin Gilchrist Is Not Playing!)
What does it take to protect democracy, modernize government, and stand tall when voting rights are under attack? Sarah and Jennifer welcome Michigan Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist for a conversation that jumps from election security to tech nerd truth, with plenty of laughs and real talk along the way. Garlin breaks down why the Michigan Secretary of State office is suddenly the main character in the fight for voting rights, election security, and data privacy—and why having an actual software engineer in the role matters when everyone (looking at you, Big Tech) wants their hands on our personal information. You’ll hear why democracy doesn’t survive on autopilot, how local election officials are the real MVPs, and what it means to “stand tall” when intimidation, misinformation, and power grabs come knocking. But don’t worry—this isn’t all doom and gloom. We also get: • Twin parent solidarity moments 🍼🍼 • Why showing up in every Michigan county matters • Favorite Michigan getaways (ice that chirps?! sunsets that stop time? yes please) • A little Marvel energy and a lot of heart This episode is equal parts serious stakes and joyful humanity—because building power, protecting democracy, and fixing broken systems doesn’t mean we can’t laugh while doing it. 🎧 Tune in and get inspired to move beyond resistance—toward action, connection, and a future that includes everyone. Ep. 49: Service Over Status: Running for More Than a Seat
What does it take to actually change the status quo—and not just talk about it? In this episode of Beyond Resistance, hosts Sarah Schulz and Jennifer Austin sit down with Michael White, U.S. Army veteran, longtime union member, educator, and candidate for Michigan State Senate (District 15). From Ypsilanti to Ann Arbor and beyond, Michael breaks down why this moment demands new leadership—and backs it up with data. We dig into the hard truths facing Washtenaw County, including jaw dropping stats on income inequality and economic segregation, and why “business as usual” simply isn’t working. Michael shares what motivated him to run for office (again), why primaries should be about choice, not chaos, and how service—not ego—should be the foundation of public office. You’ll hear: 🔥 Why Washtenaw County ranks last in Michigan for income inequality 🔥 What real “change the guard” leadership looks like 🔥 How unions, military service, and community work shape policy priorities 🔥 A refreshing take on respectful primaries and coalition building 🔥 A fun, human moment about childhood dreams (yes, really) This conversation is grounded, insightful, and unapologetically focused on people—not politics as usual. Ep. 48: Good Trouble, No Gatekeeping: A Conversation with Barb Byrum
🚨 New Episode: Beyond Resistance Podcast 🚨 What actually turns awareness into action? And why is “performative” activism not the insult people think it is? In this episode, hosts Sarah Schulz and Jennifer Austin dig into how movements really grow—starting with the small, imperfect first steps people take when they’re waking up politically. From pink hats to protest signs, they break down why gateway actions matter and how calling people in (not out) is how you build real power. Then they’re joined by Barb Byrum, Ingham County Clerk, former Michigan state representative, longtime election administrator, and current Democratic candidate for MI Secretary of State for a wide ranging, refreshingly real conversation. Barb pulls back the curtain on how elections actually work, why local clerks are the unsung heroes of democracy, and how misinformation spreads—and gets stopped. She also talks about using social media to educate (with facts and humor), standing up to election denialism, and what it means to “cause good trouble” without losing your humanity. You’ll hear stories from the front lines of election administration, sharp takes on activism culture, and plenty of laughs along the way—including a lightning round chat about first jobs that somehow makes everything feel very on brand. Ep. 47: When Work Doesn't Work: Organizing Our Way Forward in Red States
🔥 Soccer Moms, Mutual Aid, and Building Power Without Permission 🔥 This episode of Beyond Resistance is fueled by rage, laughter, and some seriously effective organizing. Sarah Schultz and Jennifer Austin kick things off fired up about women—especially the so‑called “soccer moms” who keep getting underestimated while quietly running protests, food trains, mutual aid networks, and entire communities. Spoiler alert: no one’s getting paid, no shadowy cabals required—just deeply competent people pivoting existing networks and getting stuff done. From pandemic-era mutual aid to today’s grassroots resistance, this convo pulls back the curtain on how “overnight movements” are actually built: relationships, group chats, Facebook pages, and people who refuse to sit still when their neighbors need help. It’s organizing without permission, and it works. Then, the pod welcomes Nikki Porcher, a powerhouse out of Georgia who somehow manages to be all of the following: Air Force veteran, former public school teacher, nonprofit founder, podcaster, single mom, and Democratic candidate for Georgia Labor Commissioner. Nikki breaks down what a Labor Commissioner actually does (hint: it matters a LOT), why Georgia is more politically flippable than you think, and how community—not consultants—is the real engine of change. If you’ve ever felt like the only blue dot in a red place, this episode is for you. It’s funny, honest, occasionally unhinged (in the best way), and packed with real-world lessons on how people—especially women—are building power, together. 🎧 Hit play. Get fired up. Then Jennifer flips the script with the things that spark hope: new candidates stepping up, crowded primaries where there used to be none, and the thrill of watching “regular” people transform into real contenders. The Kali Scales interview is classic Beyond Resistance energy: candid, funny, emotional, and deeply human. Kali—writer, performer, storyteller, former Esports radio host, and State House candidate—opens up about her transition, growing up blue collar, reclaiming patriotism, fighting “for all,” and why storytelling might be the most underrated political skill of our time. Rachel brings the receipts: 14 years of military service, a Purple Heart, and a career dedicated to veterans’ health. She’s not running to “be” something—she’s running to DO something. From navigating childcare chaos during the pandemic to calling out political stagnation, Rachel shares why integrity and lived experience matter more than polished talking points. But that’s not all. Sarah and Jennifer kick things off with a fiery convo on collective community vs. toxic individualism, why mutual aid is more than a buzzword, and how we dismantle the “comply or die” mindset that’s poisoning our culture. Expect raw honesty, a little righteous rage, and a whole lot of hope. If you’re tired of echo chambers and ready for conversations that challenge, connect, and inspire action—this is your space. Grab your coffee, your curiosity, and maybe a notebook. Because building blue power in red communities? It’s not just possible—it’s happening. 🎧 Listen now and join the movement beyond resistance. Ep. 43: Grassroots Organizing: Running for Senate on Vibes and Dread
Welcome back, Resistance Crew! We're transforming grit into power, big feelings into bold action, and blue energy into real life momentum for local organizing right here in our red-tinted communities. Today we’re diving into a story that is equal parts heart, hustle, holy crap that’s relatable, and “wait, she did WHAT?!” Today's guest didn’t just decide to run for office — she practically got launched into it by faith, fear, floodwaters, and a whole lot of fire. Meet Serenity Hope Salak: lifelong Michigander, mom, substitute teacher, former caseworker, professional helper of humans, and, yes, brand new Democratic candidate for Michigan Senate District 35. Serenity went from growing up in a trailer park, navigating food stamps and Medicaid, to earning degrees, surviving red tape, and doing the quiet, unglamorous work of lifting others up — one kid, one family, one hard day at a time. And then? Life said: “Hey, Serenity — time to level up.” Serenity found political inspiration in community challenges like the 2020 Midland floods, the January 6th insurrection shaking foundations, a Michigan church shooting disrupting Sunday school, and a persistent inner voice that refused to be ignored saying: Good people should run for office . . . and you're a good person! Next thing she knows, she’s filing campaign paperwork at the literal last minute, building a platform, and inspiring her daughter so much that the kid said her campaign theme song should basically be “Burn the House Down.” Serenity isn’t here to play it safe — she’s here for democracy reform with kindness, courage, accountability, and a whole lot of “let’s freaking go.” So buckle up, friends. This isn’t just an interview. It’s a spark.

Ep. 42: Dr Pamela Pugh: Engineer by Degree, Community Superhero by Vibes!
Welcome back to the Beyond Resistance Pod, where your hosts Sarah and Jennifer help turn red district BLUES into red district WINS — armed with caffeine, community power, and the occasional existential scream. Today’s episode? Oh, buckle up. Because we are joined by none other than Dr. Pamela Pugh — scientist, public health expert, longtime public servant, environmental justice warrior . . . basically the Beyoncé of community problem solving (minus the singing, plus more spreadsheets). Pam Pugh has done things most of us only Google when the group chat gets political: chemical engineering at DuPont and Dow, 14 years in environmental health, helping fix children’s living conditions, leading coalitions across business and faith communities, and yes — working at ground zero during the Flint Water Crisis. She’s seen stuff. She’s fixed stuff. She’s probably held a meeting during a crisis inside another crisis — and still managed to remain extremely polite about it. She’s also spent a decade on the Michigan State Board of Education, which means she’s survived: curriculum debates, pandemic-schooling chaos, budget battles, and at least three thousand people shouting “I read a thing on Facebook!” in public comment. If endurance were an Olympic sport, Pam would be on that podium! In this conversation, Pam brings the receipts on people-centered leadership, crisis decision making, and coalition building — all while staying grounded, hopeful, and laser focused on families and kids. You’ll hear stories about science, service, her parents’ fish fry traditions, and the kind of community organizing that makes you say, “Dang . . . I need to step up my life.” Grab your headphones, your beverage of choice, and a notebook labeled “How to Be a Better Human.” This episode? It’s that good. @DrPamelaLPugh #Michigan #SpecialElection #ElectionsMatter

Ep .41: A Marine, a Fire Captain & a Senate Race Walk Into a Podcast . . .
On this episode, Sarah and Jennifer interview Chedrick (Yes it’s pronounced like Cheryl) Greene, who’s running for Michigan’s 35th Senate District — covering Saginaw, Midland, and Bay City, aka the land of hardworking folks and very opinionated snow. Who’s Chedrick? He’s basically the Avengers if the Avengers were just one guy: • 30 year Marine veteran who made Sergeant Major (peak of the enlisted world). • Fire captain, meaning he saves people, teaches rookies to wipe their feet, and supervises emergencies with a calm--but firm--dad energy. • Serial community volunteer who is everywhere — food drives, literacy programs, veteran groups, mentoring teens, you name it. Why he's running: While working as district assistant to Senator Kristen McDonald Rivet, Chedrick met everyone — farmers, school leaders, county officials — and noticed something big: people across the district have different lives but the same concerns . . . and he basically held the Senate office together like duct tape until someone could be elected. So he looked in the mirror and said, “If I were voting . . . I’d vote for me.” And thus, a campaign was born. What he stands for: Community, service, showing up, and doing the work without needing a camera pointed at him. He believes small things add up — like snowflakes eventually covering a whole yard. (He’s clearly done real time in Michigan winters.) Fire captain life? He sees people on their worst days and treats them with care, respect, and boot wiping etiquette. He wants firefighters to be at community events before emergencies — especially because it helps recruit future firefighters (and gives kids a chance to honk the horn). Hype songs? • Before debates: “I Ain’t No Joke.” • After rough days: “Off the Wall.” This man is service, sincerity, and swagger wrapped in firefighter gear.

Ep. 40: The Fellowship of the Blue: Mindsets for Modern Movements
Strap in, folks, because this week’s episode of Beyond Resistance is a whole vibe: part political strategy, part existential dread, part cough drop powered survival. Jennifer kicks things off sounding like a chipmunk who swallowed a bag of Ricola, and honestly? It only adds to the ambiance. The duo dives head first into Leftist-on-Leftist crime on Threads, where Jennifer encounters the classic hot take: “Democrats need to get out of the way for the real leftists.” Cue the alarms, caveats, disclaimers, and Jennifer gently reminding the internet she is a leftist—just one who believes winning makes more progress than acing the purity test. Extra credit gets you nowhere in this Midterm! From there, Sarah and Jennifer drag the “entitlement to the party infrastructure” mindset straight to the curb, lighting it on fire with the truth bomb of the day: nobody gets automatic control of a political party. Want power? Earn it. Door by door, vote by vote, yard sign by absurdly-sized order of yard signs. Then the mood takes a turn as they process a cascade of heavy national and international tragedies—Bondi Beach shootings, Brown University, and a truly awful celebrity-family news story—paired with the depressing cherry on top: a political figure responding with all the grace of a malfunctioning Roomba. Sarah coins the mood of the week: disquieted. Same, girl. But hope returns in Step Five of building blue power: movement mindsets. The big ones? ✨ Go big or go home (looking at you, 4,000 purple yard signs) 🌱 Live in abundance (there’s always more pie. Don’t be stingy!) 🔮 Be authentic (no schmooze-robot energy) The episode wraps with favorite quotes—from the Serenity Prayer to Rumi to Lord of the Rings—because if you’re going to fight for democracy, you may as well take wisdom from wizards. All in all? A raw, real, funny, heartfelt episode proving that even on heavy days, movements move. #mindset #2026election #organize #GetStarted #BuildBluePower

Ep 39: Data, DMs, and Determination: The New Rules of Grassroots Organizing
Ever wonder what it takes to build blue power in a sea of red? Spoiler: It’s not magic—it’s people, passion, and a dash of tech savvy. In this episode of Beyond Resistance, Sarah Schulz and Jennifer Austin share how everyday conversations are fueling a grassroots glow-up. The Spark: Jennifer’s fired up because people—especially young folks—are eager to get involved. From swim meets to rainbow-filled birthday parties, she’s meeting future activists everywhere. The message? People want in. They just need a path. Community = Power Sarah reminds us that connection is key. Their recent holiday party wasn’t just festive—it was proof that blue dots exist even in red spaces. Bonus: new volunteers stayed late to stack chairs. That’s commitment. The Nuts and Bolts: Step 4 of their Blueprint: Tech and Data. Tools like Michigan’s VAN (voter database) and your own social media strategies amplify impact. Sarah nails it: Decide with data, lead with heart. Data helps campaigns target efforts and tailor messages without losing authenticity. Social Media & Strategy: Jennifer shares tips like avoiding links in posts (thanks, Facebook algorithm) and using Canva for graphics. Social media isn’t one-and-done—it’s a conversation. Mistakes happen, but progress beats perfection. Holiday Joy: Activism doesn’t take a holiday, but traditions keep things fun. Jennifer hauls home a massive Christmas tree (think 16 feet of festive glory), while Sarah skips cozy mornings for Christmas adventures. Both agree: joy matters. Bottom line? Organizing is equal parts heart and hustle. Start small—create a Facebook event, write a letter, join a local party. The movement needs your magic! Ep. 37: The Long Game, but Make It Crafty and Curious!
What if changing the world doesn’t start with debate . . . but with thread, zines, and a room full of strangers? Sarah and Jennifer talk with Shannon Downey--craftavist, activist, and author--about building community through creativity, slow relationship-building, and neighborhood connections. They unpack why power grows one person at a time, why activism isn’t instant gratification, and how a crafternoon and curiosity can open doors that judgment slams shut. De-radicalize conversations, soften conflict, and keep communities connected—even across political divides. From “I notice, I wonder” to talking with non-Democrats (but maybe not your dad . . . yet), they explore curiosity as a radical activist tool and the antidote to influencer-era certainty. Sarah and Jennifer welcome Virginia organizer and campaign worker Jiamie Pyles who is fresh from a cycle of big Democratic wins to talk about how the real magic happens on porches, not pundit panels. They unpack why community-rooted campaigning is the secret sauce behind Virginia’s momentum and reveal which emoji represents the state of politics today. Hint: it's not a smiley face . . . Ep. 35: No Sleep Till Crooked Con (Or After!)
From Capitol Hill to Crooked Con, Sarah and Jennifer recap their wild trip to DC last week. Jennifer had the chance to fangirl over her favorite podcast hosts (though she's still bummed she missed her parasocial best friend Jon Lovett), Sarah had some tips for how to make Crooked Con even more amazing, and they both agreed that Sarah McBride's Comms Team is the best (and most fun!) group of staffers in DC! Okay, one of the best. (They don't want their friends Shane and Diva in Rep. Rivet's office to get mad!) From highway yoga to Schumer fury, Sarah and Jennifer will keep you on your toes and ready to go! For more on Beyond Resistance: https://beyondresistancepod.com/ To sign up for info on 2026 Crooked Con: https://www.crookedcon.com/ Note: Sarah and Jennifer expressed concerns that there was not enough focus at Crooked Con concerning on the ground organizing and turning red areas blue (obviously their topic of choice). Though there were discussions on those topics, they felt they were too broad. They would love to see more detailed analysis of organizing and building blue power where they said it couldn't be done.
