bigclivedotcom on Odysee

The trashiest electronic channel on YouTube. We test and use affordable electronic soldering equipment and tools to build, teardown, modify (and sometimes destroy) random electronic stuff. Many of the builds and projects featured here operate at full mains voltage and carry a high risk of shock and fire. As such they're really intended for either entertainment value or for those who do similar stuff. The videos are generally uncensored and may contain tasteless jokes, profanities and even blood and electric shocks when things go wrong. So just like a normal workshop really. So kick back, grab a beer and enjoy the ride.

Inside a cheap "waterproof" power supply (with safety issues)

I'd call this power supply "weather resilient", but not quite waterproof. It may find applications inside signage for powering a low 12V load of 1A or less, but it starts pulsing after a while if pushed to the full stated 2A. Note that it does not comply with any safety standard with regard to human contact, and should only be considered as a novelty for the technically inclined. The circuitry is almost a perfect copy of the datasheet for the DK1203 control IC. Noting that the datasheet does state a maximum power rating of 12W in this configuration, so the usual rules of using grey import power supplies at half their quoted rating is valid here. The PCB electrical separation is tolerable (but the transformer separation isn't), and they do seem to have used a real class Y filter capacitor. The transformer is wound with an inner primary winding of 49 turns, a middle secondary winding of 12 turns of two parallel wires and an outer primary winding of 25 turns. There is a single turn of tape between layers, and the secondary winding is in contact with the primary winding at the ends.So not a power supply that is suited for safe human contact with the output. In fault conditions the 12V output could still be 12V, but referenced to the mains supply. The short supply cable was very thin copper coated steel and the output cable was copper coated aluminium. As usual with these things, they could have made a safe and acceptable unit for very little extra cost.If you want one as a novelty then here's a link to the item on AliExpress (not a sponsor). This is an affiliate link, but that will not affect the price you pay.https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c3gVxULTInteresting unit, but definitely not something for use in a commercial product that carried liability. If you enjoy my videos, supporting the channel on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLjjrFTEYhE

    Making champagne with cheap wine

Technically speaking, real Champagne is made with grapes from a very specific region of France.Because of the restricted supply it is treated as a status drink for the rich. But the harsh reality is that even self professed experts often fail to differentiate between real Champagne and common wine that has been carbonated. With a suitable carbonator like the Drinkmate (not a sponsor) you can turn the trashiest white wine into either a subtly carbonated beverage, or in this case into a super-trashy over-carbonated fizzy joy.I totally over-carbonated it this time. But that's fine. It just froths up a bit more and takes longer to depressurise. Subtle carbonation is just as effective and less messy. No affiliate link to a carbonator - but just search online for your nearest Drinkmate supplier. This is the first carbonator I've had where they literally say "carbonate whatever you want", as the cap has a slow pressure release and can be washed. These units can also carbonate red wine if you don't go overboard with the gas, and shake it gently with a dishcloth over the end to catch any foamy emissions. The Drinkmate unit uses standard sodastream style gas bottles. (That can also be refilled at home if you're technical.)If you enjoy my videos, supporting the channel on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XkiZq8IGGs

Making a laser lumia/aura effects disk - with a slight silicone disaster

The Lumia or Aura effect is created by shining a laser through rippled glass, but it can be difficult to find the right glass, and someone who can cut a circle from it for you. This was an experiment to use a standard filament based 3D printer to create a silicone mould for optically clear resin. This was my first attempt at creating a mould with liquid silicone. Apparently platinum-cured silicone is very fussy about what it's used with, and my master shape was fine on its own, but when pre-textured with UV cured resin it prevented the silicone from curing in that area and caused an outgassing effect. Even with ordinary two-part resin the silicone still stayed slightly sticky where it was in contact. In the end the answer was to use the 3D printed PLA mould on its own and add the effects onto the cast resin disks afterwards. When using UV curing resin I strongly recommend wearing gloves to protect your hands from contact with it. The chemicals used to make it light sensitive can also make your skin sensitive to sunlight. This is an experimental device. I don't know how the resin will hold up to specific wavelengths of laser energy. It's also probably limited to low power lasers for safety. The disk can also be used with various styles of LEDs for an aurora borealis effect. For laser use the disk should rotate very slowly to get the best optical warping effects. Here's the OpenSCAD script that creates your custom mould for this project. There are two adjustable variables - one for the outer diameter of the disk and one for the central hub where it attaches to a suitable motor. The script will automatically place a small central indent for aligning a drill if needed.OpenSCAD can be downloaded for Windows, Linux and Mac (plus others) from the official site:-https://openscad.org/To use the script, copy and paste it into the left hand "editor" window in openscad. You can either adjust the two variables directly in the script or you can enable the customizer that will open a window to do it.If you want to use the customizer then you can open it from the "window" drop down menu.To see the results of any changes quickly, press the cube-button with two arrows on it. To do the full build press the cube-button with the hourglass on it, and when it is complete, save the file by pressing the STL button. That will save a design file that can be used in your choice of slicer for 3D printing. The script is below:-//Ripple disk mould maker//Diameter of disk in mmdia=75;//Diameter of central hub in mmhub=20;difference(){cylinder(h=12,d=dia+12);translate([0,0,1])cylinder(h=12,d=dia+10);}difference(){union(){cylinder(h=5,d=dia);cylinder(h=7,d=hub);}//Central drilling indenttranslate([0,0,5.5])cylinder(h=2,d1=0,d2=3);}$fn=100;...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yNYqsbBkJM

Teardown of a ludicrous 6-head King Kong disco light

What features will we put in this light? ALL OF THEM! (That's why I don't get to the actual teardown until 8 minutes in!)This is one of the most ludicrous mini disco lights I've taken apart. It has 8 controllable motors and loads of random effects. It requires 26 DMX channels to control, although it can be used in several stand-alone modes too, selected either on the unit or via an RF remote control.Once again it's using an ARM Cortex processor, but this version doesn't have RDM (Remote Device Management) like some of the other lights I've looked at. It's notable that in auto mode the LEDs all start sequencing before the motors have finished calibrating.Aside from the 12/24V power supply, the unit has two notable PCBs. The main control PCB and an auxiliary LED driver. The control PCB also drives the 8 motors - a standard DC motor, 6 mini stepper motors and one large stepper motor. The LED drive PCB is controlled with a two line clock/data interface and uses standard chips to create stand alone PWM control signals for a bank of buck drivers that limit the current through the main LEDs, strobe LED modules and the lasers. The unit also has two fans rounding the motor count up to a respectable 10.The processor has effectively got six serial interfaces. The LED driver panel, the addressable LEDs, the DMX network, the RF receiver, the display and button interface and its own programming interface. This is one of the most stuffed lights of this type I've seen, but it all went back together very quickly. This light cost £45 shipped in the UK, and like many of the disco lights on AliExpress the price varies dramatically. A nice simple search phrase is "26ch disco" as it is advertised as having 26 channels of control. Here's an affiliate link for the UK warehouse unit:-https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c3gGaztnAlthough I'm not a fan of lasers in lights like this, these ones will be pointing down when it's ceiling mounted, and the green laser does not appear to be a DPSS type, so it shouldn't have extra infrared laser output. If you enjoy my videos, supporting the channel on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jha8oOMeOFU

    Inside a Philips sodium ignitor

This unit is used to help strike low pressure sodium (SOX) lamps in street lights. It is connected across the lamp and creates high voltage pulses that strike the neon/argon mix inside the tube to get the lamp started. These lamps are the type that light a dull pink and then gradually go a bright yellow colour. They were chosen for street lighting because they emit almost all their light in a very narrow spectrum that closely matches the peak spectral sensitivity of the human eye.A prominently branded lamp like the Philips Master series can last a staggering 18,000 hours. There's a lot of science in these lights. The internal tube has to handle hot sodium plasma. The outer shell has a vacuum to ensure the internal tube can get up to its working temperature. These lights have been rendered obsolete by the LED lights that are currently at the stage of "lucrative landfill". They will NOT last as long as a single changeable sodium bulb, and the entire light will need replaced when they fail.If you have a large stock of new "obsolete" low pressure sodium lamps, then be aware that collectors are always looking for them on eBay. They are rapidly going in the direction of "vintage collectibles".If you enjoy my videos, supporting the channel on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOMcdebK5FE

Reactivating an 1800's Victorian Leclanché cell

It's a strange feeling when you reactivate a Victorian electrical Leclanché cell that is literally from the 1800's. The history of these very early zinc carbon cells is fascinating, and these liquid filled glass units were often found linked together as a battery in Victorian dwellings as part of the maid-call system. The chemistry of the cell means that they are only suited to brief bursts of power, before they need time to recover, but that was fine for the applications they were used in.It's also the reason the first tungsten torches earned the name flashlights, as they could only be used as a series of brief flashes of light to guide your way at night.Sal ammoniac (ammonium chloride) is used with water as the electrolyte in these cells. It's actually the same chemical that used to be used as haze powder for lighting enhancement in some entertainment venues. (When heated it gives off a vapour that then recombines in the air as a haze of microscopic crystals). These cells did require periodic maintenance, where the water level would be topped up and the zinc rods replaced if needed. The construction is a porous ceramic tub into which a carbon rod is placed and packed with manganese dioxide. The top is sealed with pitch (a tar-like substance) with small vent tubes. The ceramic tub and a zinc rod are submerged in a glass jar filled with water and sal ammoniac in roughly 4 parts water to 1 part sal ammoniac by weight. The top of the jar is painted with pitch or a wax/grease layer to discourage the sal ammoniac crystals from growing up the glass as the water evaporates. The zinc rod is a consumable and replacements are still widely sold for electroplating and sacrificial electrode use.I used small boost circuits to power the LEDs from the low voltage the cell was supplying under load.No affiliate link for these. You'd need a time machine. If you enjoy my videos, supporting the channel on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BghbiZ8gtUY

Teardown of a cheap (but amazing) disco light

For such a low cost, this little disco light is incredible. Internally it has the same physical structure as many professional lights, but all scaled down to make it affordable. While testing it I connected my DMX-cat by City Theatrical, a piece of specialist test equipment used in the entertainment industry for diagnostics and configuring lights on a network.I was absolutely stunned when the light correctly identified itself on RDM (Remote Device Management) protocol and was able to accept remote commands over the network to change various parameters including its network address. I've never seen that in any of the listings or manuals for these lights. I subsequently found the same functionality in a cheap LED PARcan that also uses an ARM Cortex processor, so I think the software is coming from a common source. In the past the software used to be quite flakey in this style of light, but I think that a geek is now writing it. It manages to cram incredible functionality into a single very small ARM Cortex processor. In hindsight I now realise that the unpopulated power supply area on the main PCB is actually the LED driver. I'd guess the use of an external driver in the yoke gives them better options for upgrading LED power. One thing to note about these cheap disco lights is that their power supplies may not have electrical separation up to many countries standards. That's especially significant in the way the transformer is wound. In the event of insulation breakdown it's possible for a light to cause full mains voltage to appear on the common network, and potentially cause significant damage to other lights and control systems. All in all I'm blown away by how well designed this light is.This one (and the other variant I showed) came from AliExpress, but they are available from many other platforms. It's definitely a good idea to shop around, as the same light is rebranded under many names with a staggering price difference. As soon as one of the "brands" gets popular with DJs its price rockets. Here are some links to the items on AliExpress (not a sponsor). These are affiliate links, but that will not affect the price you pay.Keep in mind that these products may not meet your country's standards. The light that I took apart:-https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c36FaSg9Guide price around £45.The other light I showed:-https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c3r6cNfRGuide price around £35.The mini lighting desk I was using to test the lights:-https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c3fvfy7TGuide price around £20.All these listings are for UK shipping from a local warehouse. To find other listings try searching for 120W or 150W LED moving head. Noting that the power ratings are entirely made up.Definitely hunt around for a good deal as there is major price variation for what appears to be identical lights. For the lighting desk, search for 192 channel dmx, and again shop around for the best deal as the price varies from £20 to £100!If you buy the desk and lights, remember to buy some 3-pin DMX cables for them too.If you enjoy my videos, supporting the channel on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78R9EH3uHOU

Thermal overcurrent trips are amazingly simple inside

I was really surprised when I opened this up. I thought it was going to be much more complex. These devices are purely intended to break current limited faults like overloads, and not really ideal for breaking high short-circuit currents. One example of their use is in a motor circuit where the current increases dramatically when the motor stalls, and it's important to switch it off quickly before the motor suffers thermal damage. They can also find use on the secondary side of transformers, where the fault current is inherently limited to a manageable level. Here's a link to "Let's be techs" HVAC maintenance channel:-https://www.youtube.com/@UChH1LTsB4IzJ_qiTh23_pJQIf you want one of these for a non-critical application or just to open, then here's a link to the item on AliExpress (not a sponsor). This is an affiliate link, but that will not affect the price you pay.https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c3f7PbdjThe cost is low - maybe too low, so treat these as a novelty item, and if you have a safety critical situation then buy one from a trusted source. Quick test and a look inside a generic Hangell 60V 5A power supply

This is not a deep dive video with full reverse engineering. That would be very time consuming and be hampered by much of the functionality being in software.Instead it's a modular look inside the unit to see what sort of separation there is, and the separate sections of the power supply. It is important to select the correct voltage rating on the slide switch at the back of the power supply, to set it for a 120V or 240V supply. Connecting it to 220-240V while set for 120V will damage the unit. The unit has three terminals on the front. Negative, Positive and Earth/Ground.Because this is a high frequency switching power supply, I strongly recommend bridging the negative connection to the earth connection, as it will prevent the capacitively coupled leakage through the compact transformer from causing issues with sensitive components. This style of power supply is rated 300W, although I don't recommend using it at full current for long periods of time. You can get 120V/3A, 60V/5A and 30V/10A units. I chose 60V as it is sometimes useful for testing higher voltage LED panels. A 30V power supply is ample for most workshops. There are two overcurrent modes available. Standard, where the unit limits the output to the set current - and the voltage drops to match (Constant Current mode), and protective mode where overcurrent will instantly shut the output off and sound a warning. The unit is notable for using a TL494 switchmode control chip that is found in many traditional switching supplies. It has a separate power supply for the control circuitry and USB outputs. The control power is managed by a DK124 chip.I'm not a huge fan of the USB sockets being fed from the control circuitry power supply. Inside a HEX-light - and the slight electrical issues

This type of hexagonal lighting grid seems to be very popular in many modern retail outlets. It packs a large light into a small box as a series of illuminated batons and joining pieces that allow it to be assembled in various shapes to make a very large illuminated honeycomb grid on the ceiling or a wall. There is an internal wire link in each strip that feeds power to all parts of the light grid. There are issues though. Aside from the copper coated aluminium wire, the system is designed to have larger arrays fed at multiple points, and aside from the risk of someone trying to feed it from multiple circuits and causing a backfeed shock hazard, the connectors on some systems are not polarised and it is possible to cause a dead short through the flimsy internal wiring if plugs are not put on in the correct orientation. Ideally that would just trip a circuit breaker, but when one of an inappropriate size has been used there is a risk of the internal copper coated aluminium wire having a high enough resistance to cause sudden thermal issues. To put multiple feeds on in the correct orientation may require probing between the plug and receptacle. This one came from an eBay seller. You can find them on all the usual online selling platforms though. Note that there are multiple systems with different connectors and shades of white, so buy a larger kit than needed so you have some spares. In a way it's quite a nice system, and quite fun to play with. It's also impressive how a huge honeycomb light grid can be shipped in such a small box.If you enjoy my videos, supporting the channel on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_txN9ntg-A

Solar lighting module with design issues

This is one of many useful little modules available from online marketplaces. It states in the listing that it is designed for use from 6V to 45V but I absolutely do NOT recommend that it's used above 12V. That said, with a suitably protected three cell lithium pack, a suitable solar panel and your choice of light, it could be very useful. The module does not have any charge control other than the blocking diodes between the solar panel and battery pack, so the battery MUST have protection against overcharge and over-discharge.If you get Deja-vu then it's because this handy little module was featured in an unbagging video. If you want to buy one then here's a link to the item on AliExpress (not a sponsor). This is an affiliate link, but that will not affect the price you pay.https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c3cQYI59This module would be suited to off-grid applications where low level comfort light was wanted at night. If you enjoy my videos, supporting the channel on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_chfkWeB1KU

How to use a stepper motor driver for simple continuous rotation control

A demo of how to connect and use a handy little stepper motor drive module. I also show the circuitry inside it to make more sense of the required simple control signals. If you want more control in an automated application then you could use an Arduino, ESP or other similar module to provide speed ramping and position sensing. This simple continuous rotation setup could be useful for things like small conveyors or other feed systems. This is another of those very useful little control modules that is extraordinarily cheap, thanks to the wonders of mass production. At the cost, it's worth buying for the case and heatsink alone for your own PCBs.I did a full reverse engineering of the pulse generator module in a different video. If you want some of this stuff to play with then here are links to the items on AliExpress (not a sponsor). These are affiliate links, but that will not affect the price you pay.The variable frequency or PWM 555 based module:-https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c3rJygYdShould cost about £3.The mini stepper motor driver:-https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c4pr1efTShould cost about £4.The NEMA 17 (1.7") stepper motor:-https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c4rGC609Various types - rough price about £10.As always, shop around for the best deal.If you enjoy my videos, supporting the channel on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9E1lgBZb31k

Story time - and building one of my own PCBs (minor rant)

The real point of this video is to help you realise that if you have a unique design, you can run a small sideline business selling kits and software. Even if you just get a sale or two a week, that is still a meal or fancy coffee at the weekend. Even a little extra income can quickly add up.At first the postal system can be quite confusing, but it will quickly become second nature. I had a little box with various postage stamps in it (latterly pre-printed labels) and a list of countries and costs. These days there are more options, fast online postal purchase and either mail boxes or 24/7 lockers for easy posting. The technical community is generally very honest, and I only had a few parcels go missing over several years. Instead of buying "postage insurance" (which is useless for low value items) I just accepted that sometimes things go missing and immediately sent a replacement. One thing I didn't mention in this video is all the bizarre techniques people used to try and get me to send them my unlocked software. That included many attempts at emotional manipulation with sob stories. I'll talk about that in a future video. This is also why it's very handy being able to supply software on locked chips. These PCBs were originally designed to mount in standard floodlight cases by having front mounts that literally glued onto the glass. It made them easy to retrofit into many existing cases. These days, these would make excellent custom off-grid lights. If you wonder what Disney parade the controllers were used in, it was the final version of Spectromagic in the Spectromen costumes. The headpieces are stepping through random vivid colours with a long LFSR (Linear Feedback Shift Register) randomiser. If you enjoy my videos, supporting the channel on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AX6U3a94sFw

Inside a scam fuel saver plug

I've featured a few of these devices in the past. All in the same case and being pushed on eBay, amazon, and all the other unregulated platforms during times of fuel poverty. It appears the recent greed-driven political idiocracy has caused another push of these devices onto the market to cash in on the fact that people are struggling financially. There are genuine engine-tuning devices available, but they are for specific cars and carry a high price tag to cover the development costs. These units claim to work with ANY car and "remap" the engine's parameters to boost performance while saving fuel. (That would be a massive software feat.) In reality they do NOTHING but waste power and blink lights. Some make an effort to look convincing by blinking the lights in a way that looks like bidirectional data communication, but others like this just flash an LED on and off to look like they are doing something. This particular unit is especially disappointing because it uses a microcontroller with full control over the three LEDs and could have looked so much more convincing with better software. The button in these units has two purposes. Firstly it gives an element of interaction, making the user think they have started the vehicle learning sequence. The second purpose is probably to facilitate fobbing customers off until they lose interest or are beyond the point they can open a dispute with the seller. The instructions with these units often imply that a minimum mileage or time is required for the device to learn and adjust the engine for maximum economy. If the customer then complains that there's no difference then they can ask if they pressed the button or suggest holding it in for ten seconds and then start the whole minimum mileage thing again.A subsequent test with an external resistor and supply showed that the zener diode is a 5.1V one, and the lower voltage readings were because the dropper resistor isn't passing enough current for the LEDs, so they drag the voltage down. The cost of these units varies dramatically, with the price starting at less than £2 on Aliexpress with no upper limit on eBay and amazon as the scammers either try to gouge as much money as possible, or use a high price to create the illusion of value. (Like the fashion industry.)Any positive reviews of these devices are either fake or from people who have bought one and then convinced themselves that it's doing something with the placebo effect. If you want one of these for the novelty value or as a handy source of an OBD2 connector, then here's a starter-link to everyone's favourite online purveyor of technical toys - AliExpress (not a sponsor). Inside an emergency urine, sea water or salt water powered light

An interesting concept that has been around for a while. It's an emergency light that is stored dry to prolong the life of the electricity generating components. When filled with salty water (or urine) the conductive liquid acts as an electrolyte and the cell electrodes can generate power for the light. The unit holds about 300ml of water and uses 10g of salt, but you can adjust as required. The conductivity of the solution will have an effect on the intensity and run time of the light. If required, the unit can be emptied, rinsed and dried to put back into storage in a dry state in readiness for future use. The lifespan will be determined by the gradual degradation of what I think is a zinc electrode. The strange rubbery carbon membrane should not degrade in normal use.If you want to get one of these then here's a link to the item on AliExpress (not a sponsor). This is an affiliate link, but that will not affect the price you pay.https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c3OsDCubThese things have a valid application in the event of a major apocalyptic incident. Destructively testing thermal fuses

These little thermal fuses are often found in things like fan motors and transformers as a protective device to break the circuit if the device overheats. In many instances that could be due to an associated fault or just an unusually hot enclosure, with the motor or transformer being serviceable. In this instance a new thermal fuse may restore operation.Shunting out thermal fuses is frowned on, as it removes a safety layer and increases the risk of a fire when things go wrong. These things are mass produced and can be bought in packs at low cost. It's one of those things where buying a pack is not much more expensive than buying a single unit.Note that this type is only suited to low current applications, and not heaters and larger motors. An interesting use of these is to permanently disable a device when a fault condition is detected, by deliberately heating the fuse with a resistor. Some electric blanket controllers do that.Normally for something safety-critical like this, I recommend only buying from prominent electronic component distributors. But my usual ones didn't stock this type. That's why I tested several of them. These ones came from the usual suspect - but are available from various sources. Here's a link to the item on AliExpress (not a sponsor). This is an affiliate link, but that will not affect the price you pay.https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c3bvmD5JNote that they are available in various temperature thresholds. Exploring a gas detector module - with schematic

The seeming simplicity of this sensor, and the massive resistance variation it exhibits when exposed to various gasses is pretty amazing. It probably trivialises decades of scientific research. The module I demonstrated the sensor with is often sold as an Arduino module, but it does NOT require an Arduino or any other specific platform to be used. The module has an onboard comparator with adjustable threshold, so the unit can literally just be set to a fixed level and will sink useful current on its digital output to drive an external, transistor or opto-isolator. (about 12mA available)These modules are available with various sensors fitted for specific types of gasses and vapours, but are less suited to measuring relatively inert gasses like carbon dioxide. They also tend to react to a range of gasses, which makes them less suited to monitoring very a specific gas.The manufacturers of this type of module tend to recommend a long burn-in time when the sensors haven't been in use for a long time. The sensors will still work, but they won't fully stabilise until they have been powered for long enough to condition the sensing element. The heater in these sensors passes about 150mA continuously, so they are not really suited to continuous battery use. These modules are very cheap and readily available from all your favourite online technical marketplaces. But at less than 10% of the cost of the Fluke version, this is actually viable for those who have specialist hobby uses. For me the most exciting discovery was how it locked onto the corona discharge of the air invigorator from 10m away! It's extremely quiet to the human ear and yet the camera could detect it from a significant distance. The on-screen frequency display indicated a high ultrasonic content from the tiny corona discharge at the tips of the needles. As with other test equipment like thermal cameras, it's useful to understand the nature of what you're looking at. 30 cell Fakita battery kit with issues

I kinda like the Fakita battery system (Fake Makita) as it is a useful battery pack with built in protection against over-charge, over-discharge and overcurrent. This kit comes without cells and is supposed to make a monster 30 cell battery with five series sets of six-paralleled cells, giving the potential for a 14.4Ah pack if using 2.4Ah cells.(The Ah capacity is at the rated voltage and not all the combined cells, so it's just six times 2.4Ah.)Unfortunately, the control PCB that was supplied is incompatible with the mountings on the battery frame. It might be viable to bodge it in somehow, but it's not recommended. Even with one of the smaller modules rated for lower load current, you would need to glue the PCB into place and have fly wires onto the battery block. The control PCB is interesting as it uses the same control chip as the smaller modules, but has extra buffering to drive a large parallel array of load control MOSFETs. The gratuitous application of very stubborn silicone made it frustratingly difficult to do a proper full reverse engineering of this pack. I did find some things that made me prefer the smaller PCBs if the high current switching isn't needed.Depending on what you wanted to do with it, the kit could still be viable for the cell assembly, so if you want to explore one then here's an affiliate link to the AliExpress listing:-https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c3b7JvTPInterestingly, the control PCB shown in the listing is similar, but different to the one I received. If you enjoy my videos, supporting the channel on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uX-b7MTJ5Bw

    Muscle-wire cabinet lock

A very odd little thing. I initially thought that this was based on a magnetic latching system, but it turns out that it uses a length of a special wire that contracts significantly as it heats up.It means that this unit is very simple with a minimum of mechanical parts and is not influenced by a string external magnetic field as some magnetic units are.The wire is theoretically rated for millions of cycles with this small controlled movement.Although rated for a higher voltage, I tested this with 1V to slow down the actuator movement. The electrical data at 1V is:Cold resistance 2.86 ohms (350mA at 1V).Hot resistance 2.5 ohms (400mA at 1V).The unit is normally rated for 3 to 5V.The unit only energises the wire for the length of time it takes to release the catch, as there is a switch inline with the muscle wire.As with many items I've been buying recently, this one came from AliExpress (not a sponsor)Here's a non affiliate link to the listing.https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005211494161.htmlThe cost should be around £2.50, and it may appear as a bundle deal item.If you enjoy my videos, supporting the channel on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88wovqfuu94

My favourite style of pen, as it produces a very solid line. The case colour usually denotes the ink colour, and since I like the purple pens I just empty them and refill them with universal inkjet printer black ink.Depending on how heavily you use the pen, you can generally refill it several times before the tip finally starts wearing down too far and produces a much thicker line. The pen brand name may vary depending on your country....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jsjrIgD560

Unusual fibre optic illuminator with rotating LEDs

I got this a long time ago from a shop called T J Hughes on Argyle Street in Glasgow. They had a large display of fibre optic Xmas trees that had a very distinctive appearance compared to the simpler ones with fixed colour changing LEDs. I "explored" one in the shop and when I saw the rotating LED module I immediately bought one.I'm not sure if there was an issue with reliability, as I've never seen them since. This video shows the layout of the PCB and slip-ring assembly, which has proper carbon brushes, but sadly not copper or brass slip rings. I also removed all the existing LEDs from the PCB to reveal what they originally intended for the full colour set, and then modified it with my own choice of colours. No link for this item, as I don't even know if it's still available. But our fave big Chinese warehouse does have a wide range of industrial grade slip rings and brushes for your own projects. Here's a random (affiliate) link to a range designed for high current things like candy floss / cotton candy machines:-https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c3AlaaVnYou can use that to launch a wild industrial component adventure on AliX.If you enjoy my videos, supporting the channel on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QR05T512ccw

    Inside a thermal overcurrent trip

This is a demonstration of a classic thermal overcurrent device operating. There is a fixed contact, and one on a bimetallic strip that is sized for the rated current. When the rated current is exceeded significantly, the domed bimetallic strip heats up and suddenly clicks to the open position.A plastic shim that was being held back by the closed contacts then pops into the gap between them, so that when the bimetallic strip cools and clicks closed again it can't make a connection.Pushing the reset button pushes that shim out of the way and the contacts can close again and the unit resets ready for the next event. This unit is very simple and not designed to break very high fault currents which may weld the contacts together. A full circuit breaker also has a magnetic trip mechanism to react quickly to a high current short circuit....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEBtX-rYN0A

Very simple 555 based doorbell kit

The design of this circuit is quite clever. It's very reminiscent of the type of projects often found in electronic magazines of the 80's and 90's.It uses the venerable NE555 chip to produce a two tone chime effect when a button is pressed. The way it gives two different tones is quite clever. Note that the standby current is a couple of milliamps, so this module is not suited to continuous battery operation. The 555 chip contains a group of features inside that can be configured and used in many different ways. Although it is often used as a timer, it also has the ability to work as a threshold detector. It can sink and source enough current from its output to drive significant loads of around 100mA. Although invented in 1971 the chip is still widely used over 55 years later. It's so common that it can be bought in bulk at low cost.If you want to try one of these kits then here's a link to the item on AliExpress (not a sponsor). This is an affiliate link, but that will not affect the price you pay.https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c3O9sIdJThese kits usually cost around £1 and can often appear as bundle deal items. If you enjoy my videos, supporting the channel on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHPUPLxhSA8

Guinness widget releasing a jet of gas

Note that this experiment was done with carbon dioxide which produces much coarser bubbles than nitrogen. The finer nitrogen bubbles would diffuse throughout the liquid better. This video is a follow up to the video about the Guinness widget that causes nucleation of nitrogen in the draught cans. Several people commented about emulating it in a clear container with a carbonator. The widget is a hollow plastic ball moulded with a weight bias so that one side points down when floating in liquid. That side also has a tiny hole that points out at an angle. When the can is sealed during manufacture, the internal pressure compresses some of the nitrated guinness into the sphere, and when the can is opened the pressure is suddenly released and it causes the sphere to blow out a stream of the nitrogenated guinness. That results in mass nucleation and diffusion of tiny nitrogen bubbles throughout the liquid. Now I just have to work out how to get the widget back out of the carbonation bottle. It was a friction fit through the neck, and pushing it in was easier than getting it back out. I may have to fill the bottle with water and melt a hole in the top of the widget to hook it out.If you enjoy my videos, supporting the channel on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7f702PSHl2k

    Urine powered emergency light

Technically speaking, this is an emergency lightsource that has the dry components of a simple zinc carbon cell. To activate it you add salty water, either as a mixture of salt and water, sea water or urine, and the liquid acts as the electrolyte allowing the cell to operate. The unit is not powered by water. It is powered by the gradual dissolving of the zinc block. The water is just the electrolyte, and once the zinc has degraded the unit will stop working. The main feature of this light is that when it is stored dry then it can last for a very long time.If needed, the partially used unit can be emptied, rinsed, dried and kept in storage again. This light came from AliExpress. Guinness widget explored

If I have to be honest, this is a lot simpler than I was expecting. In the past I looked at an older style widget and it was composed of two halves that separated forcibly with a loud pop because it was still under pressure. My guess is that this widget is filled with nitrogen and when the can is sealed, the guinness may enter the sphere and pressurise the gas inside it. When the can is opened and releases the pressure, the mixture of guinness and nitrogen is blown out through a small hole and possibly creates a mass nucleation effect to liberate more nitrogen from the drink. This gives the effect of draught Guinness being poured in a pub.Update - it appears that just before closing the can they inject a drop of liquid nitrogen that then pressurises the can and the widget. It seems to work quite well.If you enjoy my videos, supporting the channel on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SEgLeMB7r4

Celebrating 55 years of the 555 timer chip (flashing alert)

This video (which is 5 minutes and 55 seconds long on the watch page) is being released at 5:55am on the 5th day of the 5th month on the 55th anniversary of the 555. There will also be a 55 minute live stream at 5:55pm UK time on the same day.The video is a demo of the extraordinary NE555 timer chip. One of the first integrated circuits that is still in widespread use 55 years after its original design. I bought the 555 I used in this video from CPC in the UK, who supply genuine Texas Instruments chips.Designed by Hans Camenzind for Signetics, it's a very versatile IC that contains what could best be described as electronic Lego building blocks that allow it to be used as a timer, oscillator, threshold detector and many other things. It has the huge benefit of a wide voltage range (4.5V to 16V) and the ability to directly drive loads of up to 200mA from its output.Hans reportedly said that he would have designed the chip differently these days, but hindsight is a wonderful thing. He was working in uncharted territory in 1971 and pretty much scored a direct hit. I would guess that while modern chips have the same functionality they will have evolved internally to suit modern manufacturing techniques. The idea that the 555 was named after the three 5K resistors in its voltage divider was refuted by Hans Camenzind who said the catchy name was coined by a marketer with the suspiciously "showbiz" name of Art Fury. But how do we know that My Fury didn't get inspired by references to the three divider resistors during meetings?I'd also like to give a shoutout to other "daddy chips" still going strong in this era. Notably the LM358 dual op-amp, the LM324 quad op-amp the LM393 comparator and many TTL/CMOS logic chips. They frequently appear in modern products. Let me know of any other worthy daddy chips in the comments.Even the world of microcontrollers has its own daddies. The 8051 microcontroller architecture is still found in many generic Chinese chips, and yet dates back to 1980 - making it over 45 years old.If you enjoy my videos, supporting the channel on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zs4kUZmubEY

ABOUT THIS SHOW

The trashiest electronic channel on YouTube. We test and use affordable electronic soldering equipment and tools to build, teardown, modify (and sometimes destroy) random electronic stuff. Many of the builds and projects featured here operate at full mains voltage and carry a high risk of shock and fire. As such they're really intended for either entertainment value or for those who do similar stuff. The videos are generally uncensored and may contain tasteless jokes, profanities and even blood and electric shocks when things go wrong. So just like a normal workshop really. So kick back, grab a beer and enjoy the ride.
