The trashiest electronic channel on YouTube. We test and use affordable electronic soldering equipment and tools to build, teardown, modify (and sometimes destroy) random electronic stuff. Many of the builds and projects featured here operate at full mains voltage and carry a high risk of shock and fire. As such they're really intended for either entertainment value or for those who do similar stuff. The videos are generally uncensored and may contain tasteless jokes, profanities and even blood and electric shocks when things go wrong. So just like a normal workshop really. So kick back, grab a beer and enjoy the ride.

Celebrating 55 years of the 555 timer chip (flashing alert)
This video (which is 5 minutes and 55 seconds long on the watch page) is being released at 5:55am on the 5th day of the 5th month on the 55th anniversary of the 555. There will also be a 55 minute live stream at 5:55pm UK time on the same day.The video is a demo of the extraordinary NE555 timer chip. One of the first integrated circuits that is still in widespread use 55 years after its original design. I bought the 555 I used in this video from CPC in the UK, who supply genuine Texas Instruments chips.Designed by Hans Camenzind for Signetics, it's a very versatile IC that contains what could best be described as electronic Lego building blocks that allow it to be used as a timer, oscillator, threshold detector and many other things. It has the huge benefit of a wide voltage range (4.5V to 16V) and the ability to directly drive loads of up to 200mA from its output.Hans reportedly said that he would have designed the chip differently these days, but hindsight is a wonderful thing. He was working in uncharted territory in 1971 and pretty much scored a direct hit. I would guess that while modern chips have the same functionality they will have evolved internally to suit modern manufacturing techniques. The idea that the 555 was named after the three 5K resistors in its voltage divider was refuted by Hans Camenzind who said the catchy name was coined by a marketer with the suspiciously "showbiz" name of Art Fury. But how do we know that My Fury didn't get inspired by references to the three divider resistors during meetings?I'd also like to give a shoutout to other "daddy chips" still going strong in this era. Notably the LM358 dual op-amp, the LM324 quad op-amp the LM393 comparator and many TTL/CMOS logic chips. They frequently appear in modern products. Let me know of any other worthy daddy chips in the comments.Even the world of microcontrollers has its own daddies. The 8051 microcontroller architecture is still found in many generic Chinese chips, and yet dates back to 1980 - making it over 45 years old.If you enjoy my videos, supporting the channel on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zs4kUZmubEY

Inside a vehicle relay tester with a polarity issue
This is a 12/24V automatic relay tester for vehicles that cycles relays ten times while looking at their contact status and gives an indication of their functioning and reliability. Note that the unit tests the contacts with a current of 100mA and they may not perform the same under high load current. This one has an interesting quirk that I only spotted because I tested it with some relays that have internal LED indicators. They didn't light while the relay was being tested, and it turns out that the unit does not comply with the DIN 72552 standard for vehicle wiring. The polarity across the coil. is wrong, and while this is not an issue with most ordinary relays, some have built in diodes across the coils to clamp the high voltage spike caused by the collapsing field when they are de-energised.If a relay with one of those diodes is tested in this, then the result will be a short circuit and possible damage to the unit and the diode in the relay itself. A high current short can cause diodes to fail short circuit, and that could render the relay unusable and potentially cause damage to a circuit it was then plugged into. The fix on this unit is fairly straightforward if you choose to do it.If you want to get one of these then this unit was part of a bundle deal on AliExpress (not a sponsor). Here's an affiliate link that shouldn't affect the price you pay, but as always, shop around for a good deal. https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c3e6461tIf you enjoy my videos, supporting the channel on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJwVztNy3RA

Inside the Aneng BT-168 battery tester
This unit is a modern LCD version of the classic cell/battery tester. There is one notable difference though, and it is the lack of a load resistor to give an indication of the cells ability to supply current. As supplied, the current drawn by the 9V contacts is about 1mA, and the current on the sliding contact varies with the voltage of the cell as follows:-1V = 5mA1.5V = 3mA4.2V = 1mAIf you wanted to add a load, then suitable resistors could be 470 ohm quarter watt across the 9V battery connection point, and a 10 ohm 1W resistor across the sliding contact, noting that the dissipation will be about 1.8W with a freshly charged lithium cell, so a 1W resistor is only rated for intermittent use.The 9V connection point can actually measure up to about 13.5V.I think the most interesting thing about the circuitry is the way it uses a single regulator for both inputs, but boosts one up first. Both test points do have polarity protection - a simple diode on the 9V input and a MOSFET on the low voltage input. As with many of the things I've looked at recently, this one came from AliExpress (not a sponsor). Here's a link to the item. It's an affiliate link, but that will not affect the price you pay.https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c3QauhphThe cost is typically around £2.Supporting the channel with a dollar or two on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHqACIPPuYU

Inside a Tuya compatible bluetooth downlight
A look inside a typical bluetooth controlled downlight that integrates with the Tuya app (or others with Tuya compatibility) for control over intensity, colour temperature and RGB colour. This was even simpler than I was expecting. The module inside this has hackability, as it will work from 12V at reduced power (the original supply is 13.6V, although that drops under load). There is a lack of proper heatsink continuity in this light, so it might actually be a good candidate for customisation.Power data is as follows:-Any white at 100% = 5WRGB at full = 3.6WRed at full = 1.5WGreen at full = 1.4WBlue at full = 1.4WStandby power is 0.75W with the circuitry passing 13mA.This unit came from AliExpress as usual. Love letters from the BBC - chapter 3
In the UK if you watch traditional TV channels like the BBC then you are required to pay for a licence. As many people move away from that outdated style of television content to better uses for their TV, like viewing the 115 million plus independent channels, many no longer require a licence.Unfortunately the task of collecting the licence is handled by a profit-motivated company called Capita who arrogantly assume that everyone should be paying them for a licence, and that anyone who doesn't is a criminal. They send out letters that are intended to be threatening and accusational.Imagine a bank that employed debt collectors to collect an imaginary debt from everyone in the hope that people would pay just to stop the continuous threats and intimidation. That's Capita. These letters are all real, and I'm reading them to you in exactly the way they're intended to be read....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4vt9z2p3pc

Impressively empty makita-clone battery charger - with schematic
One of the most commonly cloned battery styles on the online marketplaces is the Makita style. These "Fakita" (Fake Makita) batteries actually contain full charge and discharge protection, which means the tools can be very simple - often just a switch and motor. As supplied, the batteries usually charge via a small jack connector on the pack, but some have an auxiliary charge connection. Those packs can be charged on a slot-in charger like this one.The circuitry in these units is breathtakingly simple. Mainly just a rectifier and smoothing, and a single chip solution that drives the transformer, but also monitors the secondary side by using the primary as a sense coil, and also indicates the state of charge using two directly driven LEDs.The secondary side circuitry is literally just three components. A diode, capacitor and load resistor. The circuit board has indications that it is used for other styles of battery too, as there are legacy connector positions and some obsolete resistor positions that bizarrely still have resistors soldered on them.Note that these chargers are made to Chinese safety standards (none), so always treat the exposed contacts as potentially being a shock risk and don't finger them.I wouldn't recommend using a charger like this with a real Makita battery, as older versions have very little in the way of protection, and with imbalanced cells there is a risk of some being overcharged. The fake packs will terminate the charge as soon as any cell reaches 4.2V.The Fakita batteries vary wildly in capacity, with some being as low as 1Ah, but others being double that. You can buy kits for making your own custom packs using your own choice of cells, and there are some enormous versions with up to 5 cells in parallel (25 cells per pack.)The popularity of these packs means that there is a wide range of unusual accessories available for them, including the very useful work lights with built in USB chargers. You can also get adaptors that allow you to use these packs to power your own equipment. If you want one of these to explore or use then here's a link to the item on AliExpress (not a sponsor). This is an affiliate link, but that will not affect the price you pay.https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c3MNCd93Alternatively, here's the other version:-https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c44lOBd7Both should cost between £3 and £5 depending on the yo-yo pricing. Shop around for the best deal. They claim to be universal voltage. I wonder how that goes with the simple resistive dropper power supply for the chip. Love letters from the BBC - chapter 2
In the UK we are supposed to have a license if we watch traditional TV channels. But as everyone moves away to more intelligent platforms like YouTube with its masses of good edutainment, less and less people are requiring a licence. The company tasked with collecting licence money (Capita) assumes that EVERYONE should have a licence and aggressively pursues anyone without one in an effort to intimidate them into paying for one they may not require. As many people use a TV to watch YouTube these days, it's extremely deceiving to imply that you require a TV licence to watch YouTube. I've just checked with Google and deceiving someone into paying for a licence they don't need is firmly categorised as fraud. There are currently over 115 million YouTube channels that you do NOT require a licence to view. When I or any other independent YouTuber live streams, that is also free to view without a licence.I've had people tell me that they would love to view my live streams on YouTube and Twitch, but can't because they don't have a licence. So Capita's wording is definitely misleading people. The only "YouTube" channels you might need a licence for are ones that actively live stream terrestrial TV channels. I couldn't identify any of those as I simply don't watch their outdated style of content.Hopefully Google will not do a "deal" with Capita, but if they do then hopefully they will have a settings checkbox to block all Capita related content. If you genuinely do not need a licence and are being harassed by Capita, I strongly recommend that you archive all the threatening letters they send you, as they may be useful in the future....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ym1JkRkTXKc

Unusual DFx Planet-saver LED light with novel design
An unusual design of LED light that has features designed to increase its lifespan. The company does still exist, but is making specialist products serving the beverage dispensing industry. This is one of the more interesting lighting products I've looked at, especially with the built in redundancy that keeps the panel working if an LED fails. The use of a simple capacitive dropper is nice, and the thermal fuse is a nice safety feature.I'm not sure how old this light is, but the design hints at it being from the era of reliable and long life lights versus the current era of corporate landfill brands. This light came from an eBay seller, and that listing is now out of stock.Supporting the channel with a dollar or two on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uH1wNRO4TAQ

Exploring a cheap OBD2 vehicle diagnostics module
These ELM 327 vehicle diagnostics modules are widely available online, and have very different functionality based on the quality of the software. The name comes from the company who wrote the original software (ELM Electronics), but were unfortunately ripped off. In doing so they have kinda become an iconic company, and have made vehicle diagnostic equipment much more available to the masses. The bluetooth password for these devices is usually 1234 but can also sometimes be 0000.I swapped the ISO standards in my colour coded pinout, The CANbus is ISO15765-4 and the K/L line is ISO9141.This unit was a bit trickier to reverse engineer than usual, as it has cut corners by implementing a CANbus network driver with discrete components, but it's also a good thing as it lets you understand what would effectively be hidden by a dedicated driver chip. But there's a flaw. At some point in the design/copying/manufacture it appears that a PNP transistor has been used where there should have been an NPN transistor, and that has a huge impact on the ability of the CANbus section to work. If the software hasn't been equally hobbled then the fix is easy - just replacing that transistor with an NPN one with the industry standard pad pinout. This unit should still work with the older K/L-line network though, so it should still work on some older vehicles. I'm not sure how many vehicles use multiple types of network. I'd expect them to use just one of the three available on the port. The dongles firmware only deals with communication with the vehicle's computer systems, and a phone or tablet via bluetooth. The work of interpreting the data is done by a suitable app. One of the most famous being Torque. It's absolutely worth getting the paid version of the app as it is very capable and has clearly taken a lot of time and effort to create. It's only $5 for the Torque Pro app.Note that something like this can't compete with the diagnostic equipment used by professional garages for the deeper diagnostics, but it can definitely help point you in the direction of technical issues. The garage equipment usually carries a massive price tag and ongoing subscriptions to updates that only make sense if you are earning money full time in that trade. There are different versions of these dongles with different software, and some can access more parameters than others. This one came from AliExpress, but they are available from lots of sources with a wide price range and functionality. If you want one of these to experiment with then here's a link to the item on AliExpress (not a sponsor). This is an affiliate link, but that will not affect the price you pay.https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c4Sbyo2bSupporting the channel with a dollar or two on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrL6fDFt-Rs

Thermal fuse test
I wanted to see how these thermal fuses worked inside. It appears to be two wires held in place with a high temperature resin base, and bridged with a low melting temperature solder surrounded by flux. When the rated temperature is exceeded the solder bridge melts and the flux causes it to retract into a ball at each side, breaking the circuit....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_4xjFRW__U

Love letters from the BBC - chapter one
In the UK you need to pay a licence fee to be allowed to watch the BBC and some other content. The yearly fee is collected by a company called Capita who use excessively aggressive techniques to intimidate people into paying for a licence that they may not actually need. When I was young and got my own flat, I didn't have a television, because I was working long hours and spending all my free time writing software and building gadgets in my workshop. Then the "letters" started coming.... Really nasty letters that implied that if I had ANYTHING at all that could receive a TV signal then I needed to pay for a licence. Then came the visits from "inspectors", who demanded access to my flat so they could search it for an unlawful TV.(It turns out that the "inspectors" are just employees with as much right to enter your home as Ronald McDonald.)In the end, the continuous threats and intimidation got to me and I paid for a licence even though I had no TV.Imagine if a loan company sent a debt collector after everyone in the hope that people would be bullied into paying for a loan they never had. That's Capita. And because it's a "government thing" they seem to be unaccountable....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DT2hIOl5Yjs

Inside a washroom UVC air steriliser and aroma suppressor
This is a very simple unit internally. It just has an electronic ballast and custom mercury vapour UVC germicidal tube, and relies on thermal convection to gently and silently circulate air through the unit. Other versions have a fan to force air through faster. As air passes through the unit, any bacteria, spores and viruses are deactivated and volatile aromas are oxidised, resulting in more sterile air. This unit has a couple more tricks up its sleeve though. Aside from the interesting aluminium shrouds to limit the amount of UVC light that can escape the unit, it also has a set of titanium dioxide coated baffles designed to cause air turbulence. Titanium dioxide is commonly used as a very white pigment in paints, but also has the unusual characteristic of exhibiting a photocatalytic reaction on its surface when exposed to UV light. That results in the formation of hydroxyl radicals (a molecule composed of one atom of hydrogen and one of oxygen) which is a very short lived but highly reactive molecule that reverts back to a more stable form almost instantly, but can oxidise airborne contaminants in the process. This unit also uses an unusual UVC tube that has two types of quartz/uviol glass that are spliced together. The long section only passes 254nm UVC and the short section also passes the 184nm wavelength giving a small extra output of ozone for increased effect throughout the space it's in.It's quite odd that a unit that has been in use long enough for the tube to have failed completely, still has immaculately white titanium dioxide baffles. It may be a self-cleaning effect associated with photocatalysis. Now for the medical stuff. Contrary to popular belief, UVC poses a low risk of skin cancer. It got that reputation because it will cause very serious surface irritation of skin and eyes. But in reality the wavelength is so short that it can't penetrate deep enough into the skin to reach the critical layers. UVA and UVB both pose a much higher risk of causing subdermal damage.Always remember not to look at a lit UVC bulb or its reflection from shiny surfaces. It will rapidly cause surface damage to skin and eyes, leading to sunburn effects. The eyes will not react immediately, but after some time they will feel like they are filled with sand. This effect will quickly wear off depending on the exposure level. It may be possible to get anesthetic eye drops to help with the discomfort if needed. It's so unpleasant that you will not want to risk it again.Almost every plastic and glass will block UVC light, so standard safety goggles will usually protect your eyes. You can get phosphor coated UVC test cards to check that.Titanium dioxide has been used as a paint pigment and food colourant for a long time, but there are now concerns that nanoparticles of TiO2 (titanium dioxide) could pass through the blood-brain barrier and pose health problems in some situations. Most of the research in this area has been done on lab animals consuming the pigment, and it's not known if it poses the same risk to humans. As a food additive (E171) it has been banned in Europe and many other countries for several years, but is still used in the UK and USA. In this application there is no significant risk as it is not being ingested.I got this unit secondhand on eBay, and it still commanded a respectable price. This one was £45 in a well-used condition and with a dead fluorescent tube. It uses a 2G7 lamp holder, and I ended up retrofitting a different one so that it could use a cheap 9W PLS aquarium UVC tube, which lacks the ozone section.UVC tubes gradually degrade their quartz/uviol glass over time, and although they may seem just as bright as usual, this can greatly reduce the amount of UVC light emitted. As such, they should be changed every year or 10,000 hours of use. The degradation of the quartz on this tube was visible.Mercury vapour tubes are still the cheapest, most reliable and most efficient source of UVC light for applications like this. LED sources of UVC are not currently viable for this application. If you enjoy my videos, then supporting the channel on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mnm2RHIDE6I

Inside a USB powered tool-battery charger - with schematic
This little module is based on the classic USB boost converters that can supply various voltages, but in this case with the addition of a charge current monitor for charging status display. When i saw the LM358 dual op-amp I considered that it might be for current feedback to the boost chip, but sadly it's just for the charge status LEDs and the current regulation relies entirely on whatever the chip can handle when running at full tilt, as it will not receive any feedback signal until the battery is charged and the internal protection circuitry found on these jack-charged clones, ends the charge. Not sure what the reliability of these units will be, as they are pushing the little chip hard for potentially several hours at a time, and it gets hot fast. They could have added just a few components to the circuitry to lower the charge current in a controlled manner by providing feedback to the boost chip. They could even have used one of the op-amps for that purpose to keep the value of the sense resistor low. While these are novel and have their uses, I don't totally recommend them. But if you want to play around with one, then here's a link to the item on AliExpress (not a sponsor). This is an affiliate link, but that will not affect the price you pay.If you view this item or add it to your cart it may appear in the bundle deal section.https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c3e3na0nGuide price around £1.50With suitable resistor tweaking these can also be used as fixed voltage boosters for other uses.Supporting the channel with a dollar or two on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxnSUNgVomc

Useful 12V vehicle flasher module
Although designed for flashing LED based vehicle lights, this module can also be used to flash other 12V loads.I've looked at one of these modules before and the circuitry is similar, but whereas I mistakenly thought that the small unmarked transistor was a programmable unijunction type, this one uses a marked PNP transistor. The circuitry is quite clever in that it has used the main switching MOSFET as a part of the timing circuitry. That gives the circuit a very low component count.Note that for some LED loads you may need a 1000 ohm resistor across the load to give the flasher its full voltage for stable timing. The single electrolytic capacitor on the PCB can be changed for a higher value for a slower flashing range. If you want one of these very cheap modules to experiment with, then here's a link to the item on AliExpress (not a sponsor). This is an affiliate link, but that will not affect the price you pay.https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c3bO2Iz9Cost should be about £2 or less.Supporting the channel with a dollar or two on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OCdiZsSZrw

Disco light teardown - (Mac Aura clone)
I wasn't expecting this light to be so well built. In many ways it puts pro-lights to shame, but as with most lights it has its little quirks. As revealed in the video it has a slightly odd issue with the ballistic curve of the motor drive. If you send a DMX data change that is significant, the unit will rotate to that position quickly, with the usual stepper motor ramp up and down to maintain torque. But if you make a very small change the unit does not seem to fully enter the torgue ramp, and instead crawls slowly to the selected position over a period of time. The circuitry is breathtakingly simple compared to many pro units. It uses the same multi-processor topology, with one master processor delegating tasks like motor control and LED dimming to other processors. The microcontrollers it is using are:-Main brain - Nation N32L406 CBL7Motor and position monitoring - Nation N32G430 C8L7LED drive - CW32F030 K8TTThe main processor has 256kb (32 kilobyte) local flash memory for settings. The stepper drivers are the vague SA8555 (TI DRV8885?)The RS485 (DMX512) transmitter/receiver is a BL1585B (MAX485?)The LED drivers are vague generic buck regulator chips. The unit uses a power supply supposedly rated 24V at 400W. The light's power data is:-Standby 18.6WRed 33.4WGreen 42.4WBlue 43.4WWhite 44.4WAll at full 182W. (Mac Aura is 228W)The light can operate in DMX mode where it receives data from a lighting network, or it can be used in standalone mode, audio sensing mode and possibly with slave and master functionality - although the manual is vague about that.I compared this light to the Martin Lighting MAC Aura, which is a popular moving wash light in the entertainment industry. A real MAC Aura is very expensive, even second hand. It's a useful light, but I'd never buy a heavily used one, as the spares are expensive. If you have a MAC Aura and it is not lighting the white LEDs in test mode, don't panic. There's an annoying software quirk that removes white from the test sequence when the light is set to calibrated colour mode. If you change it to raw colour mode the white should work. This style of light is available from many sources under different brand names. This one came from a local AliExpress warehouse. I'll give you a starter link (affiliate link) but I strongly recommend you shop about, as the price of these lights covers a massive range.https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c2xqEskBSearch for a price around £60 to £80. You may find this light pops up in deals, and may also be available from a local warehouse in your country to avoid shipping issues.Something worth noting. There is a common trend that lights like this are used for their physical effect of a moving light panning back and forth. It's not unusual to see them literally thrashing about over their full range continuously at full speed, and this puts lots of stress on the cables passing between moving parts. If you are using these as a decorative effect, they will be much more reliable if you limit the movement to a smaller range and run them at a lower speed.Supporting the channel with a dollar or two on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4VhqilSgrw

Solar moving and blinking eyes - with schematic
These have been around for a while, but they were always hidden in boxes, and I wondered if the eye movement effect was cheated with a few LEDs. When I came across some sitting loose on the shelf at a local shop I turned one on, and when I saw it was a large matrix of LEDs I bought one for us to explore. The solar section is fairly standard, but with a bit of smoothing and a zener to cap the open circuit voltage at 5V. The eyes are each formed from a shaped array of 52 LEDs multiplexed on an 8 by 8 matrix (capable of running up to 64 LEDs).The microcontrollers running the eyes have a simple single wire synchronisation feature that sends a sync pulse once during each pattern cycle to make sure they match up. The PCBs are identical, so any module can be the master or slave unit, and if desired you could theoretically add more eyes to the network. The software is basic. It follows a short looping animation sequence. It would have been nice to use a randomiser to control the eye position and blinking, and then fill in intermediate frames as needed. These modules can be run on a voltage between 3V and 5V with the higher voltage resulting in a brighter effect. These units are branded Smart-solar in the UK, but probably go under other brands elsewhere.Supporting the channel with a dollar or two on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAF4R2n9CJA

Perplexing UVC steriliser design
When I saw this on eBay I was intrigued that a flexible strip with a clear plastic front could actually transmit UVC. So I got one and tested it....I mean - did they even test their own finished product? It's got 10 REAL UVC LEDs with decent output, but then they blocked it! That's one of the perils of UVC, it will only pass through a few materials like uviol glass, quartz and some very specialist polymers. Perhaps the factory that made the product for them was supposed to use a specialist UVC transmissive sleeve material. Or maybe the design originally had a bare strip and they added the sleeve for moisture protection without understanding the optical consequences. My UVC meter shows a high UVC output from the bare LEDs, but that drops to zero as soon as the front plastic cover is placed between the LED and the meter. I had to double check this a few times afterwards. and also checked it with a classic UVC detecting phosphor test card. The majority of the LEDs seem to be near-UV ones for visual effect. Blue/UVA light does not have good germicidal properties. The current the LEDs are being run at is quite ferocious too. I'm not sure how long they would last in continuous use.I also wonder how many of these are still working in installations and consuming about 12W of power for a purple glow.Supporting the channel with a dollar or two on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7bbGHIRdq0

Inside a retro fibre optic flower base
Nothing too complex about this. It's a slight update on the classic fibre optic spray or flower light, but with an upgrade from a halogen lamp to an LED one.The classic fibre optic displays pre-date LEDs and tended to use a tungsten or metal halide light source. The colour and effects are based on rotating disks, and there used to be very complex fibre optic signs that mapped the fibres onto the disk assembly with multiple concentric effect layersThese days, the fibre optic light sources have gone in the direction of high power RGB LEDs. The downside of that is that you just get a solid colour change without the sweeping effect of the disk. You can also get patches of primary colours on the fibres due to the position of the red, green and blue LED emitters. The main advantages of the LED sources is that they run much cooler and use significantly less power. There have been interesting systems using rotating PCBs with multiple coloured LEDs to emulate a rotating disk. This version is the classic 12V AC base with a synchronous motor, but the tungsten bulb has been swapped for an LED one. The unit is visually brighter, with very vivid colours due to the cold white light source. It makes the colder colours like blue much brighter. If you have an old fibre optic light like this it may be viable to upgrade it with a suitable LED bulb. The smaller units like this one tend to use an MR11 bulb (Metallised Reflector 11/8ths of an inch diameter). Some larger units use an MR16 bulb.My first fibre optic lamp had very slender glass fibres and a candle bulb for illumination. The glass fibres were notorious for breaking and giving you painful glass skelfs. You may be able to find some of the retro fibre optic flowers on eBay.If you enjoy my videos then the easiest way to support the channel is to subscribe for more good video content. Inside my ancient Tandy resistor substitution box
I think I bought this thing about 40 years ago, and it still sees very regular use. I wish they still made them like this, but even with 3D printing and a suitable PCB, it's complicated by the need for sliding contacts. There are 36 resistor values spaced evenly around the PCB, with a matching alignment hole for the spring loaded ball bearing to sit into. Note the two rings of solder-resist to prevent the solder from flowing into the slip ring and contact areas. The resistors start with unusual values at the lower end, with 5, 10, 22, 33, 47, 56 and 100 ohm, but then settle into standard decades based on 10, 15, 22, 33, (47), 56 and 82 all the way up to 1 Megohm, but omitting 470 ohm. presumably to allow a good range of values within the 36 available positions.I think if I was designing something like this now, I might just have an array of resistors and a little flying jumper to select the desired value.Supporting the channel with a dollar or two on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ol-B5CQW3zo

A LIDL bit of LED landfill (with a nice driver)
A look at the construction and driver circuitry of a disposable LED light fitting.I'm really not a fan of disposable lighting like this, as it forces non-technical people to do electrical work themselves, or pay the high costs of hiring an "approved" contractor of unknown skill.Although the packaging implies that the light can be repaired by an electrician, it is just not viable to waste money on that. The "bulbs" on this light can't be changed. But on a plus note, the driver is well made and looks as though it has very good electrical separation. The driver is a constant current unit with an output current of 260mA and a voltage range of 25-40V making it suitable for between 9 and 13 one-watt LEDs wired in series. It may actually be viable to buy the entire light just for the driver.Supporting the channel with a dollar or two on Patreon helps keep it independent of YouTube's quirks, avoids intrusive mid-video adverts, gives early access, bonus footage and regular quiet Patreon live streams.https://www.patreon.com/bigcliveAlternatively, for a single coffee contribution you can use PayPal:-https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bigclive#ElectronicsCreators...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aL-b-HgdNyQ

140 audio sample Quran nightlight
Religious gadgets are always quite surprising for the technology used in them. This plug-in night light has a huge number of audio samples. They are divided up as:-Verses of the Quran.Protection from curses and evil.Remembrance and chants.Routine prayers for every regular task or routine. To maximise efficient use of memory the samples are quite heavily compressed - but still good audio quality, and many standard samples are used as part of longer phrases. The primary language of the daily prayers and sacred texts is Arabic, although not all muslims speak that language as standard - much like the Catholic church using Latin. The power supply isn't too bad and the main circuit board is nicely laid out, with most of the work being done by an IC which is probably a microcontroller optimised for applications like this.If you would like one of these, then here's a link to the item on AliExpress (not a sponsor). This is an affiliate link, but that will not affect the price you pay.https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c4o1OlgFThis version has a UK plug. Emergency chlorine generator for water and surface sterilisation
I've featured similar devices to this in the past, notably a spray bottle that generates chlorine based disinfectant on demand using water and some standard sodium chloride table salt. But it's worth revisiting the technology, as it could be very useful if there was some sort of natural disaster. This device used electrolysis to generate a potent chlorine sterilising agent from plain (or contaminated) water and salt. It could potentially be used to sterilise water for drinking, to preserve it or to make a stronger chlorine solution for cleaning and medical use.A common method for deep sterilisation of medical establishments is to fog them with a hypochlorous acid solution. This is notable for being a potent disinfectant, while also being safe for skin contact and breathing at low concentrations. In some instances hypochlorous acid fog can be used for treating lung infections. These units do produce some sodium hypochlorite too, which makes them less suited to inhalation at high concentration.Note that only a trace level of chlorine is needed for drinking water sterilisation. You can buy tiny soluble chlorine (Sodium dichloroisocyanurate) tablets for this use (Oasis water tablets). Sodium hypochlorite is commonly used for sterilising public water supplies, and you can sometimes get a slight smell or taste of it in tap water. The nice thing about this module is that it can use any low voltage and low current source of electricity, so even a low power solar panel on an overcast day could give useful results. There was a very useful correlation between mAh and chlorine strength, that could allow a typical USB monitor device to be used as a level indicator. It could be viable to use a simple current regulator circuit to get predictable time based results. The electrode material of the anode is critical, as the process can cause rapid degradation of most metals. For emergency improvised electrodes it may be viable to use graphite for that electrode and stainless steel for the cathode. Here's a Wikipedia article that gives more information:-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypochlorous_acidIt's been a while since I bought this unit, but they are still commonly available. Here's a link to a couple of types on AliExpress (not a sponsor). These are affiliate links, but that will not affect the price you pay.The most common type:-https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c2yRaJT1A similar version to the one in the video:-https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c43qTXwBA larger spray bottle version for making a disinfectant spray:-https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c3Hbcax5The small units should cost around £5-£10 and the large spray unit should cost around £20.If you enjoy my videos then the easiest way to support the channel is to subscribe for more good video content. Inside a smug drugglers secret scales
Tiny covert scales for weighing suspicious substances. But also a miracle of mass production, as they seem to be very accurate. It's actually viable to buy them just for the miniature load cell.Note that to open these you need to slide the front fascia with fake buttons away from the keychain hole. It can be quite fumbly the first time you try it.This is one of those things that takes a lot of science and compresses it into an extremely cheap integrated circuit. It's bizarre that it can interpret the tiniest flexing of a piece of aluminium, via tiny stickers with a zig zag resistance track on them. These scales are rated for 200g max. Never exceed the rating of a scale excessively as it may affect the calibration, or even damage the load-cell.The scales do come pre-calibrated, but here's how to recalibrate them if needed. You will need an accurate calibration weight of 200g, 100g, or 50g. It's better to use a weight that is close to the scale's maximum rating. You can improvise a calibration weight by getting a suitable plastic cup and using another set of known accuracy scales to fill it to a total of the desired test weight with sugar. You can also buy sets of accurate calibration weights online. The calibration must be done on a flat and level surface, and with no strong draughts like fans. With no weight on the platten, turn the unit on and then press both the buttons simultaneously until 200.00 is displayed. Now use the power button to select your chosen calibration weight. 200g, 100g, 50g, 20g,10g, 6g, 5g or 1g.Then press the M/units button to start the calibration process. The scales will get a zero reference and then prompt you to place the shown weight on the scales. Once you've done that there will be a brief pause while it waits for the weight to stabilise and then it should briefly display PASS and then the weight of your calibration weight.Note that the accuracy of the scales can be skewed by putting on the wrong weight or a low quality or damaged calibration weight. This can also be used to cheat people by misweighing stuff. Those who might be affected may wish to carry their own test weight with them to check the accuracy of the scales being used.If you want one of these tiny scales then Here's a link to the item on AliExpress (not a sponsor). This is an affiliate link, but that will not affect the price you pay.https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c4ORONwxPrice should be around £3. You will also need a CR2032 lithium cell to power the scales. If you enjoy my videos then the easiest way to support the channel is to subscribe for more good video content. Inside a casino slot-machine topper (top sign)
This is a game sign for the top of a casino slot machine. It's a standard unit supplied by SuzoHapp a significant manufacturer of components and spares for the maintenance of gaming equipment. The PDF manual they have for this unit seems to show the schematic and layout of a different version of this PCB. The component I was puzzled about is a MC33164 voltage monitoring chip to make sure the processor resets cleanly if there is a power issue. Especially important with multiplexed LEDs, since a crashed processor can leave one section of the matrix lit with higher current than normal. At first when I saw the PCB I thought that the system was direct driving the LEDs using the ULN2803A drivers for 16 pairs of LEDs. I was surprised to find they had an 8X4 multiplexed array. The button on the PCB is used to select the LED intensity and also whether they are continuously on or off. (on/off modes only on software V1.5 and higher.)If you wish to browse the website of SuzoHapp (not a sponsor) then you can find it here:-https://www.suzohapp.com/The user guide with schematic for this topper is here:-https://na.suzohapp.com/pdf/topper_pdf/xenon/104-07890manual.pdfThis type of topper is still listed on their website, complete with fluorescent tube.Apparently the LEDs that light at power up do indicate the software version. In this case, one LED at the left (1) and three LEDs at the right (3). So the software version is V1.3.Other things worthy of note. The 12V feed to the PCB has one wire going through a ferrite inductor and the fluorescent tube has a high value inductor across it. Both probably for electrical noise suppression. If you enjoy my videos then the easiest way to support the channel is to subscribe for more good video content. How weighing scales work, and how to make your own
You'd think that making a pair of accurate custom weighing scales would be complex. But the availability of mass produced electronic weighing components means that is is very easy to create a set of surprisingly accurate scales. The key components here are the load cell, which converts weight to a voltage, and the dedicated HX711 integrated circuit that converts that voltage into a very high resolution number and communicates it to a microcontroller via a simple data and timing interface. Also featured in this video is a very convenient microcontroller based module that receives the number and can compute and display the weight based on a zero-weight reference and an adjustable scaling factor. The unit stores the set values to non-volatile memory so that it does not need to be calibrated for each use.Note that there are a few different types of the digital display units, and each has its own features and setup requirements. Here are the instructions for the three button version shown in the video. The load cell is connected to the HX711 module as follows:-E+ RedE- BlackA- WhiteA+ GreenThe HX711 module is connected to the digital display module as follows:-VCC Positive supply voltage (usually 5V)GND Negative/0V supplyDT Data/DT/RXSCK Clock/SCK/TX5V (USB power supply) is supplied to the digital module via its onboard jack, USB connector (if fitted) or two solder pads - ensuring correct polarity. It's a good idea to test a USB cable for the correct polarity, as some cables don't follow standard colour codes.Once your weighing assembly is set up - ensuring that nothing is on, touching or impeding the movement of the weighing platform, then power the module and allow it to stabilise.Initially it probably won't show zero. Press the left button to set zero. It will be stored. Now place an accurate weight on the platform. The display will probably show a random number that does not represent the actual weight. Now you have to use the middle button and right hand button to adjust the prescaler/calibration value to get the correct reading. You can make small adjustments with individual clicks, or if there's a large difference then you can hold the buttons to scroll faster.IMPORTANT NOTE! The prescaler is just a reference number and NOT the actual weight. When you stop adjusting the prescaler up or down there is a brief pause and then the display shows the measured weight. If it is still not correct then keep adjusting as needed. For the final accurate calibration (for example) a 100g weight, find the point where the display is jittering between 99g and 100g and note the calibration number. Then adjust the calibration value until it is jittering between 100g and 101g and note that number. Your perfect calibration is right in the middle of those two values. Once you have adjusted back to that value your scales have been calibrated.Note that the buttons should not be accessible to general users of the scales as random pressing of buttons will void the calibration. If a fixed size container is used on the scales then it can be nulled out by putting the empty container on the scales and pressing the left button to set the new zero reference.Note that I've only tested the display module with a 1kg load cell. Also note that I described the load cells as being made of steel. The big ones are actually an aluminium alloy, and the small body scale version is steel. If you fancy playing with the components used in the video, here are some links. These are affiliate links, but that will not affect the price you pay. Some listings may not work for some countries and some may just be sold out or disappear. When paying on AliExpress, let the transaction complete before leaving the purchase page as otherwise the purchase may not go through. Here's the three-button digital module:-https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c2JLZTJVLoad cell and HX711 module - I recommend the 1kg set:-https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c3A9bAuFThe platform kit minus the digital display:-https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c4S5NfvZOnly buy it as a kit, as the assembled units may be damaged in shipping.Stand-on scale style load cell set:-https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c2utB2MjThere are also kits with a large round PCB, but note that it involves surface mount components. If you enjoy my videos then the easiest way to support the channel is to subscribe for more good video content. Retro 12V fluorescent light driver with pre-heat
An unusual bit of circuitry in an interesting fluorescent lamp driver. To aid starting and give longer tube life, the fluorescent tube's heaters are energised before the tube is struck. That raises the electrodes up to a thermally emissive state reducing the voltage drop across them and reducing blackening and sputtering. The circuitry with two zeners and a large capacitor on the 555's control pin is unusual. I can only guess it might be for frequency stability with fluctuating voltage. While it would have been best to swap the faulty transistor with an identical one, I drew a blank on that component from my usual suppliers. I looked for alternatives but the need for a low saturation voltage, high frequency operation and similar gain pointed to various devices, but with no guarantee of compatibility. Just for fun I put in an STP36NF06L MOSFET and it works without getting too hot. Thanks to Adam for sending this in.If you enjoy my videos then the easiest way to support the channel is to subscribe for more good video content. DIY foliage/crystal light - with custom STL generator
In recent AliExpress unbagging videos I occasionally featured random bits of fake foliage. Here's the project that uses them.It lets you create a custom sized housing to suit your application, and then populate it with your choice of random foliage or stems of crystals. The first version of this project was a simple cylinder shape, but the new version is more stylish and versatile. It was originally intended to be used in place of the usual globe on a mains powered LED bulb, but only after it has been hacked to reduce the power rating and keep the temperature at a sensible level. See my videos about doobying (Dubai-ing) suitable LED bulbs. (I can't foresee every variable, so you modify the bulbs at your own risk.)The use of a very common USB powered illuminated base is safer and gives you more options for choosing cold or warm white and even RGB with a remote control. There are no fixed rules for this project. You just make what you want. The end result is a totally custom feature light that nobody else will have in quite the same style. The foliage/crystal supports are intended to be a light friction fit to allow you to modify the light as desired. Here are some links to various items on AliExpress (not a sponsor). These are affiliate links, but that will not affect the price you pay.The conifer style foliage:-https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c3sTeV6JThe sprigs of acrylic beads:-https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c4DEn6yRThe USB powered illuminated wooden base:-https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_c45mi0qjAll these items may appear as bundle deal options when you view them or add them to your cart. There are many options for fake foliage in places like Ali and eBay or in local shops. Here's the script to make your custom base. ABOUT THIS SHOW
The trashiest electronic channel on YouTube.
