The Bird Banter Podcast #195 with Dr. David Mann and HaikuBOX
On this episode Dr. David Mann talks about HaikuBOX, a small device that can record and identify bird calls and songs nearby, and send these recordings and IDs to a smart phone app for you to check anytime. It is pretty cool, and yet one more way for birders or researchers to monitor birds in an area. I find especially interesting, besides the device itself, the background story of how it was conceived, produced and marketed. It uses the neural net BirdNet from who else, Cornell, which uses similar computer learning technology to that used in Merlin. It's pretty cool To see more detailed info check out the associated blog post on BirdBanter.com, and please leave comments there or in a review on your favorite podcast app. Thanks for listening, and until next time, good birding and good day!

The Bird Banter Podcast #194 with Peter Cavanagh
How do birds fly anyway? Well, in an incredible number of ways, adapted to their needs and circumstances. Birds have evolved from dinosaurs, some have evolved to not fly, others to fly in so many different habitats, circumstances and ways that to understand all of this is beyond human comprehension, but my guest on this episode, Dr. Peter Cavanagh, has set out to help readers understand a lot of what is understood, in a way that a non-PhD scientist can comprehend. Listen, read and learn. Find Dr. Cavanagh online at on his website. Here is a link to buy his book on Buteo Books. Check out some pretty spectacular photography on his Instagram page. Read more on the Bird Banter blog. Leave a review or rating on your favorite podcast feed to help me out. Until next time, good birding and good day!

The Bird Banter Podcast #189 with Wayne Klockner
The American Birding Association is an organization I as a birder sometimes take for granted. I love getting Birding magazine, and especially North American Birds regularly, but wanted to really learn a lot more about the organization I've been a member of for years, but never really looked at carefully. Wayne helps a lot, by educating me about what the ABA does, and for me, better understanding why I should continue to support the organization. In addition, Wayne is an avid birder with his own birding story and stories. Enjoy. On the episode we talk about the planned trip, how he came to be known as the Urban Birder, about his various services and roles in his company, and about his approach to urban birding in general. The Bird Banter Podcast #159 wtih Ken Ostermiller and Adam Jackson Creators of BirdingHotspots.org
eBird is a great tool for many purposes, but there are times when a birder wants to know how to best bird a hotspot, where to park at the hotspot, are there restrooms there, and generally about birding the hotspot. It is great to ask a local birder, but often that is not possible, and so what to do? Now the answer is easy. Go to BirdingHotspots.org where my guests Ken Ostermiller and Adam Jackson have created an open source, crowdsourced site for birders to help each other know how to find birds at any eBird hotspot. You can help by using the "suggest edit" feature to help flesh out the information on any hotspot. Please get feedback to me, or contact Ken to volunteer to help as an editor for your state. Thanks for listening. Please leave a rating and reveiw. See more on the Bird Banter Blog. Until next time, good birding and good day.

The Bird Banter Podcast #154: Ken& Ed Go East Coast Pelagic Birding
Pelagic birding is different in many ways from birding on land. It's fun, exhausting, and difficult, but can be really great too. Ken Brown, my long-time birding buddy, and I have dreamed of getting out of Hatteras N.C. with Brian Patteson for years, and finally made it happen this year. Despite difficult weather we had a great trip, and talk about that and more on this episode.
