    BPR's Gravestone Chic

Gravestone Chic Today on Bit Public Radio, host Lana Schur explores the ever-changing nature of cool. Is "cool" determined by fashion? By celebrities? By invisible gravestones? By barbarian Goths invading Rome? Nobody seems entirely sure. Correspondent Jimbo Brandywine travels to a Renaissance Faire to investigate the unexpected return of the Goths, only to uncover turkey economics, a family raised by actual turkeys, and one very confused human identity crisis. Next, Flannery Wilson reports from Beverly Hills, where luxury shoppers have embraced the newest status symbol: gravestones that don't actually exist. The investigation somehow leads to ghost tourism, HOA disputes, Walt Disney, and a long-overdue confrontation with Mary Poppins. Finally, former failed "CNN" investigative journalist Paisley Bowie uncovers an underground community living inside pottery kilns, where magical ashtray-producing fairies, eternal curses, and suspiciously enthusiastic smokers reveal the surprising intersection of ceramics and public broadcasting. Throughout it all, Lana desperately attempts to keep an increasingly chaotic pledge drive on the rails—offering listeners everything from Butterball turkeys and job-shadowing opportunities to invisible burial plots and disgraced journalism awards. Somewhere in there... someone might actually donate. Apologies Butterball, Renaissance Faires, Goths (both Visigothic and Hot Topic), Vogue magazine, Patrick Swayze, pottery instructors, ceramics departments, ashtrays, smokers, non-smokers, Walt Disney, Mary Poppins, Julie Andrews, Disney Parks, cryogenic researchers, Beverly Hills, Rodeo Drive, Louis Vuitton, homeowners associations, psychics, ghosts, goblins, fairies, turkey farmers, Renaissance turkey vendors, Robert Smith, The Cure, BBC journalists, NPR pledge drives, public radio tote bags, kiln manufacturers, pizza ovens, anyone currently preserving their brain for the future... and anyone attempting to start a fashionable invisible cemetery. BPR's Curiosity Morning (CANADA)

Curiosity Morning Today, We're Curious About... Canada 🇨🇦 Today on Bit Public Radio, host Jane Kane welcomes border officer Mark Hadley to answer one simple question: What exactly is Canada? The answer, it turns out, is... surprisingly complicated. As Jane and Mark explore our neighbors to the north, BPR correspondents uncover an international bagpipe smuggling operation, questionable border security practices, suspicious hockey interference, and the diplomatic complexities of pouring maple syrup on complete strangers. Along the way, listeners learn almost nothing about Canada—but quite a bit about stereotypes, curiosity, and why you should never underestimate the power of a well-played bagpipe. 👀 What You'll Definitely Not See Coming: A multinational war on illicit bagpipes. Operation Bagpipe Hockey... and its even worse sequel, Operation Baggy Waggy. A tourist who mistakes Canada for Europe. The surprisingly dangerous legal consequences of making poutine jokes. A prison sentence involving hot cocoa, public healthcare, and an alarming number of Timbits. Switzerland somehow becoming collateral damage. About Today's Guest Mark Hadley joins Curiosity Morning as a veteran U.S. border officer whose entire understanding of Canada has been assembled from conversations at a border crossing... despite never actually setting foot inside the country. His professional philosophy: 👉 Curiosity is important. 👉 Crossing the border is easy. 👉 Crossing your own assumptions is considerably harder. Today's Closing Thoughts Curiosity crossed the border. Stereotypes forgot their passports. Everyone owed Canada an apology. Apologies BPR apologizes to the people of Canada, Canadians living abroad, border patrol officers, customs officials, RCMP officers, hockey players, hockey pucks, bagpipe players, Scotland, Braveheart, Tim Hortons, Timbits, maple trees, maple syrup producers, poutine enthusiasts, Lake Louise, Southern lawyers, Swiss immigration officials, Switzerland, multilingual citizens, horses named Joke, breakfast diners, ant colonies, prison wardens, public healthcare systems, and anyone who has ever attempted to smuggle anything inside a bagpipe. Also... anyone who genuinely tuned in hoping to learn something about Canada. BIT Public Radio (BPR) - Misconception

Today on Bit Public Radio, Host Luke Bovard explores the strange and unpredictable world of misconception. Correspondent Angelina Washington reports from Troy, New York, where a Flag Day celebration honoring Uncle Sam escalates into civic confusion, alphabet panic, and unexpected papal involvement. Next, Mandy Keyes investigates food misconceptions at a farmer's market in Pashook, Iowa, where a simple question about tomatoes leads to nightshade conspiracies, unusual educational materials, and some deeply confusing ideas about reproduction. Finally, in her first-ever field report, Gail "Shut Up Gail" Shephard accidentally investigates immaculate conception instead of misconception, uncovering mysterious pregnancies, impossible football outcomes, secret societies, and gardening techniques that defy explanation. Misunderstandings were made. Conclusions were reached. Facts became optional. Apologies Residents of Troy, New York, Uncle Sam,   Karate schools, karate students, karate parents, people named Xavier, Xander, and Yolanda, Zachary; Sesame Street, literacy advocates, the Vatican, Pope Leo, RC Cola, Fanta, farmer's markets, tomato growers, eggplant farmers, nightshade researchers, conspiracy theorists, sex education teachers, bananas, tomatoes, condom manufacturers, PBS cooking programs, Las Vegas sportsbooks, giant communities, golden geese, secret student societies, ACE Award nominees, workplace birthday cards. Podcast Town | The Villages, FL with Mike Roth

Episode Description This week on the Bit Improv Comedy Network, Billy and Gail head south — spiritually, geographically, and possibly medically — with Mike Roth of The Villages, Florida, who gives them a guided tour of America's most aggressively recreational retirement wonderland. Mike walks us through The Villages' astonishing scale, its golf cart culture, its town squares, nightly dancing, festivals, clubs, rumors, loofah lore, pickleball intensity, and the particular magic of a community where everyone has a hobby, a schedule, and apparently a transportation-based signaling system. From there, the BIT Crew takes one polite civic interview and lovingly drives it straight into a flaming roundabout of podcast-town chaos: The Villages Podcast Network, loofah codes, armed festival discourse, senior self-discovery, competitive pickleball escalation, and a Shooters vs. Pickleball championship that probably violates at least three HOA guidelines. Charming at first. Then sun-drenched. Then deeply unsupervised. Apologies The BIT Comedy Network apologizes to Mike Roth, the residents of The Villages, Florida, golf cart commuters, golf cart passengers, golf cart mechanics, anyone with a loofah attached to anything, people who know what the loofahs mean, people who insist the loofahs mean nothing, pickleball players, pickleball referees, the Shooters Club, Strawberry Festival attendees, town square dancers, low-priced alcoholic beverage vendors, coming-of-age seniors, alternative sexuality educators, upside-down pineapple enthusiasts, Central Park, trailer parks, retirement communities, HOA boards, Florida tourism officials, anyone named Lucky Luke, anyone who brought a gun to a fruit-based festival, and all listeners who thought "retirement" meant things would calm down. Credits Director and Creator: Billy Merritt Producer, Editor & Graphics: Hill Kane Featuring: Mike Roth (Himself) Billy Merrit (Himself, Narrator) Hill Kane (Gail - Producer) Angela Washko (Amazing Angela - Co-Co-host of Loofa Codes Podcast, Vinny from Vinny's Villages Guns N' Stuff, Chiquita Banana)Luke Bovard (Lucky Luke - Co-host of Loofa Codes Podcast, Karl - American Idol reject ) Jim Tripp (Car Show Guy, The Producer, Paul - Lucky Luke's Friend, Bob, who should NOT drive) Lisa Steckman (Co-host of Reber Rousers Podcast, Mandy from The Shooters' Club, Pickleball Couple #2)Don Slovin (Co-host of Reber Rousers Podcast, Crazy Larry) Flannery Wilson (Co-host of Wal*Mart Warriors Podcast, Sunrise Trailer Park, Pickleball Couple #2) Brent Kohler (Co-host of Wal*Mart Warriors Podcast, CUBE Sex Shop, PickleBall Coach) Music: "Shark Bait" performed by Little Kahunas | Produced by the late, great Peter Miller. Podcast Town+ | Farmington, MI

This week on the Bit Improv Comedy Network, Billy and Gail kick things off with Mayor Joe of Farmington, Michigan, whose generosity and good humor are on full display as he shares the city's history, its Quaker roots, its famously welcoming small-town vibe, its abundance of coffee houses, and the distinctive character that makes Farmington feel like its own little world — before graciously allowing the BIT Crew to do what they do best: lovingly satirize it all. From there, things spiral beautifully into a full-on podcast-town fever dream, where civic pride, local personalities, and unchecked microphone access turn community spirit into pure comic chaos. Charming at first. Then increasingly not normal. Apologies The BIT Comedy Network apologizes to the residents of Farmington, Mayor Joe, Farmington coffee houses, Quakers, local historians, the Warner family, ghost hunters, tax preparers, lawyers, accountants, tarot readers, notaries public, public safety professionals, podcast producers, silent coffee shop patrons, anti-outsider committees, front porch enthusiasts, NASA, astronauts, and anyone who expected this episode to remain a normal civic interview. Professor Michael Delaney | Guest Monologist

The BIT Improv Comedy Network – Mainstage Professor Michael Delaney Visits Dobbs Ferry This month on Mainstage, host Billy Merritt welcomes longtime collaborator and improv legend Professor Michael Delaney to talk about one very specific place: Dobbs Ferry, New York. What begins as a casual conversation about a small Hudson River town quickly spirals into a wildly improvised audio adventure featuring cursed skeletons, extremely unreliable restaurant hours, entrepreneurial ghosts, and a Dalmatian with a Revolutionary War résumé. Michael shares stories from his years living in Dobbs Ferry, raising a kid outside New York City, biking the Croton Aqueduct, and navigating the town's mysterious dining scene (including a sushi restaurant that specializes in being closed). From there, the Mainstage ensemble builds an entire comedic universe inspired by the town's lore. In This Episode Billy Merritt interviews Professor Michael Delaney about life in Dobbs Ferry The Croton Aqueduct, Hudson River history, and the town's Revolutionary War connections The legend of Sushi Mike's — the sushi restaurant that may or may not ever be open Ernesto the tomato-growing landlord A cursed British skeleton named Derek searching for closure A paranormal podcast investigating the town's supernatural problems Firehouse drama between jealous Dalmatians Graveyard rubbings, haunted cats, and questionable tourism opportunities A desperate mission to obtain sushi and lift an ancient curse from the town Apologies The BIT Comedy Network apologizes to the residents of Dobbs Ferry, the Hudson River Valley, George Washington, Martha Washington, British soldiers of the Revolutionary War, cursed skeletons, Dalmatians, the Dobbs Ferry Fire Department, Croton Aqueduct engineers, Ernesto, people sensitive to onions, paranormal podcasters, cursed cats, parents of skeleton-collecting children, and anyone who tried to get a reservation at Sushi Mike's. rabbitHOLE 19 | Wordnesia

Wordnesia | Frogs | Math Teacher President Ever stared at a word until it stopped being a word? That's where this week's rabbit hole begins—when Hillary's brain short‑circuits over the word speaker and takes a detour through psychology, frogs, and semantic satiation. 🐸💭 From there, the BIT crew spins a surreal chain of scenes featuring: Two frogs debating existence (and auditioning for a Budweiser commercial) A crappy math teacher turned football coach turned U.S. President Nine‑year‑old engineering prodigy designing roller coasters and performing surgery Captain  Mouse trying to make it big at Disneyland And a funeral so wild it probably shouldn't be this funny Somewhere between linguistic collapse and theme‑park chaos, we even manage to learn why you should always show your work—and never praise your principal in private. 💬 Favorite Quotes: 🧠 "A frog does not repeat. A frog resonates." – Actual comment from a frog fan forum (via Hill's monologue) 🧮 "Budget cuts is math, so if you get rid of the math teacher, maybe the budget works itself out." – Coach Brent, Bad Math Teacher & U.S. President 🎢 "He flew off that rollercoaster and did three sick flips. rabbitHOLE 18 | Thank You Fluoride!

Ever stared at a toothpaste tube and wondered if it could take you higher? In episode 18 of Rabbit Hole, Billy Merritt and the BIT Comedy players tumble from dental conspiracies and Norwegian stop-motion cartoons to hoarding hotel soaps, prank-calling Captain Crunch, and even a pirate gang in juvie. Along the way, fluoride turns into Flo Rida, the Soggies declare war, and toothpaste becomes the most questionable substance at the Cannabis Cup. It's improv chaos at its finest: absurd connections, quick character swaps, and the kind of storytelling detours only this ensemble could conjure. From corporate "green peas" to Plato's cave, with a bit of toothpaste smoke in the air, this Rabbit Hole has it all. 🚫 APOLOGIES:  Dentists everywhere. Best of rabbitHOLE - Meet Sensei Ken

I asked the BIT Crew to nominate their favorite episodes for a special August replay while we are on hiatus.  I selected one of Thea's picks because it went back to season one - when we were all baby holers. She says, "Googlie Wooglie I like a lot because of Sensei Ken, the fun game with cool words, and just love Geoff's Keanu Reeves impersonation, and Keanu Reeves as Abraham Lincoln." Episode Five has what I consider our best ending. We all break each other—even Billy Merritt. I dare you not to laugh. We'll be back on September 13th with a brand new hole!   ~~ In rabbitHOLE's fifth episode, the BIT CREW educates listeners about some critical issues, including: Googlie Wooglie Mc Dojo Grammar Police  Konrad takes a deep dive into the origins of the term GOOGOL (a one with a hundred zeroes). He starts the BIT CREW off on an improv adventure of surf lingo, organized crime involving unsuspecting UK co-eds, "re-imagining" history, and mispronouncing words. Episode five has our favorite ending so far…we all just lost it – we hope you laugh so much your sides will ache, and your heart goes pitter-pat. rabbitHOLE 14 | Salon Breakups

rabbitHOLE showNOTES – Episode 14 🎧 This Week's HOLES: Salon Breakups Piñata Strategies The Jumpy Poley Defense™ In this episode, Amber makes a compelling case: breaking up with your hair salon is basically ending a relationship — complete with emotional baggage and wildly inconsistent communication. She also lifts the lid on some outrageous salon screening processes. (Do you know how long it takes to cut your hair? Shouldn't they?) From there, the BIT CREW naturally spirals into couples therapy for stylists and clients… and a few other unexpected pairings. 👊 Meanwhile, "Adult Piñata" is officially an Olympic sport now (we decided), sparking heated discussion about: Childhood candy rivalries Dangerous playground games Alt-piñata materials And whether judges should be allowed to jump on defendants (spoiler: no) 💥 By the end, you may find yourself asking: What other childhood activities deserve Olympic recognition? Could postal-carrier therapy save America? And seriously… how did you survive elementary school? 🚫 APOLOGIES TO: The entire D.C. salon scene, Olympic organizers (again), stylists who don't name-drop, Piñatas, Bazookas, Machetes, bankers, therapists... you get the idea. rabbitHOLE is 100% unscripted and fueled by the BIT CREW's real-life internet spirals, nostalgic chaos, and shared trauma. rabbitHOLE 11 | Improvised Shakespeare

Welcome to the second HOLE of SEASON TWO. Today's Holes: Improvised Shakespeare Waiting for Godot, Guffman, Lefty, etc. Unintentionally Scary Children's T.V. Shows BIT player Amber takes us on a journey that opens on Improvised Shakespeare and culminates with Twin Peak's pain and suffering symbol - creamed corn. Who knew? Flannery confesses her love for Beckett's Waiting for Godot, which triggers Luke to recall a Tempest performance with only three actors. This leads to a slightly morbid tale of Amber's grandmother saying goodbye from her hospice bed but then asking for a tuna fish sandwich. Finally, Luke tries to convey that the early muppets were very "weird," triggering Thea's memories of a dark and horrifying Norwegian children's T.V. show (Pompel og Pilt) where one puppet never finds the other and meets a broom.  This episode features many celebrity "sightings," including George Lucas, David Lynch, Dale Cooper*, Ross Bryant, Cookie Monster, Kermit the Frog, and the Bard himself! I can't give it all away here in the notes!  APOLOGIES: Creamed corn, the celebs listed above, Jim Henson and the Muppets (for at least the third time), Kyle Merritt MacLachlan (no relation), Chat Shows, Italy, Norway (sorry, Thea), The Nutcracker,  puppets, and Diabetes. rabbitHOLE 10 | Stuff Astronauts Like

Welcome to SEASON TWO of rabbitHOLE!!! Please resolve to listen and share every episode (please, please, pretty please)! Today's Holes: Stuff Astronauts Like Accentuating the Positive Faking Your Religion BIT Founder/Director/Leader BILLY MERRITT takes the helm by painting a vivid and endlessly hilarious picture of Florida's "SPACE COAST." Please help us answer the age-old question, "How many TIKI BARS are too many?" Jason shares "letters from Gramps" about stick-to-it-iveness. Brett reminisces about accidentally reciting a sexist passage from an H.R. Hubbard book his Mom gave him. Deema confesses to faking his way through religious rituals to keep peace in the family until he can't take it anymore. Once he declares his authentic belief (or disbelief in his case), his father accuses him of being a communist, and everything goes back to normal. Thea confesses to participating in a religious rite of passage only for the money gifts. DO NOT judge her!  APOLOGIES:  NASA, Tang, Scatting, the planets Mars, Venus, and Penis, the Astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, and Matt, the professions of bartender, doctor, and lawyer, Elon Musk, mermaids, all organized religions, women, tigers, Bing Crosby, the GRAMMYs, and the entire Hubbard family. He discovers the "real Kobe's" criminal underbelly with its aging membership and inevitable demise. Laura admits to working at a movie theater and infers that if you are cool about it, hopping from theater to theater MIGHT be tolerated. Hill may disagree, but we can all agree that Jason's dad was a line hopper and that's NOT okay! Movie!Movie! 3 | A Christmas Hoagie

Merry Christmas from Billy and the BIT CREW The BIT elves worked overtime to deliver this BONUS Christmas day episode. Captains' Cove is a seaside town with a lighthouse and a shipwreck that is absolutely obsessed with sandwiches. As 2024 winds down and the residents prepare for the Annual Turkey Cutting Competition, love is in the air, and mayo is in their bags (IYKYK). Documentarian Winston Hartsdale is filming a historical documentary, SHIPWRECKED AT SEA...OR DEAD?, about the WW II shipwreck visible from the town's beachfront. The town, which is not interested in history, has other ideas for Harstdale's subject matter. As romance blooms between sandwich enthusiasts Hannah Hoy and Thad Justin, most of the town is focused on the upcoming competition. Thad is back in town after a long absence to investigate the new sandwich shop but keeps bumping into the lovely Hannah. Will he choose love or expose the town's scandal? Local soap shop owner April Sprinkles and her bestie May Flour take their job as contest judges very seriously. There are unconfirmed rumors that May lost her left pinky finger in a booby-trapped turkey in the 2021 competition. There are also rumors that these two have had mutual crushes since high school. Former cobblers Lucente and Guiseppe now serve hoagies and subs with mysterious (but tasty) ingredients. Their newly remodeled shop has attracted the attention of Thad and Jason Meatcutter, the Meat Code Enforcement Officer. You'll also meet Olive Sharpe, the town's official Mustard Supplier. She won her position in a previous competition and is a condiment curator with some interesting theories about mayo and mustard. The town ghost is likely that of Walter Hartsdale I, our documentarian's grandfather. His efforts to connect with his heir are frustrated by WH III's non-belief in ghosts. The lighthouse keeper is also a landscape painter who embellishes his works with murderous and cannibalistic elements. He does not like being upstaged by the brewing romance. Movie!Movie! 2 | Mistletoe Mishaps

Mistletoe Mishaps is an instant Holiday Classic! The sleepy ski town of Snowman Slopes teeters on financial ruin. If its perpetual fundraising goal isn't met by the end of the year, the 2024 ski champion (aka "Snowman") will be its last. Hence, the town's 350 occupants will be forced to power down the gondolas and ski lifts and head west. World-renowned filmmaker Susan Redding is on hand to document Snowman Slopes' plight and encounters a little more than she bargained for. Her hard-hitting, no-nonsense style softens as she gets to know the town's inhabitants. We are sure she is secretly rooting for the town even though she is maintaining her signature objectivity. As romance blooms between Sandy (a former Snowman Slopes pageant queen who is in town for the annual event) and Jonathan (her previously vertically challenged high school pal who never moved away), the townsfolk rally to raise money to save the town. Holiday magic and miracles abound. You'll meet Frosty the dancing snowman, Santa himself, and a little bird who happily flies about sharing mistletoe and a song. rabbitHOLE 8 | Charlie Chaplin

In rabbitHOLE's eighth episode, the BIT CREW heads down some interesting holes, including: Charlie Chaplin Fabric Power Rankings Mascot Abuse The Great Muppet Caper Luke starts us off with a twisty tale beginning with the 1089 albums you must listen to before you die, (Anyone else a fan of Ogden Nuts Gone Flake? What about Stanley Unwin? Nope? Maybe?) a visit to the GOON SHOW, and then some forgotten facts about the Little Tramp. We also learned that Jason may or may not have a fabric fetish. Multiple cast members suffered physical abuse from mean kids when wearing mascot costumes. Flannery attempts to get ANIMAL (the Muppet) the recognition he deserves. rabbitHOLE Ep 7 | Freddie Mercury's Diet

In rabbitHOLE's seventh episode, the BIT CREW heads down some interesting holes, including: Freddie Mercury + Queen Skinny Jeans Dancing Raisins Recitals Katya explains how she grew up in a pop culture void and only recently educated herself on the band Queen and its frontman. The troupe has a lively discussion on who should and should NOT wear skinny jeans. (I was today years old when I learned that women's pockets are smaller than men's pockets.) Amber relives a minor childhood trauma of performing in a dance recital at a county fair dressed as a raisin - except the homemade costumes didn't really look like raisins - and being stuck at the top of the Ferris wheel. So funny! APOLOGIES:  Madonna, Michael Jackson, NASA, History Teachers, Queen Elizabeth II, the California Dancing Raisins, Bank Robbers, Carnies, Carberators (aka corroborators), Buckingham Palace, the poop emoji, and anyone with extremely long testicles. rabbitHOLE Ep 6 | Haunted by Crowley

This is a BONUS Spooky Season episode of rabbitHOLE. It's only fitting to start with a cast member's haunting story*. Of course, in proper rabbitHOLE form, the BIT CREW A-Zs it to dead animal furniture. In episode six, you'll hear about hauntings, signs from beyond the grave, random appearances in rap videos, ironic award show categories, daytime dance clubs, over-caffeinated dates, New Ikea, talking furniture, and approval seeking. TLDR Version: Always confirm muffin ingredients. IYKYK As always, rabbitHOLE is unscripted and inspired by the CREW's real-life rabbit hole adventures. If you enjoy rabbitHOLE, follow, rate, and share rabbitHOLE with your friends! APOLOGIES:  Ikea (yet again), the OSCARS®, the GRAMMYS®, Insane Clown Posse, caffeine, Heinz Ketchup, Belle & Sebastian, IMDb, Sally Field, Basements, Pharrell Williams, Tufted Titmice, Dead Pets, Hill's Dad, Fear Factor, and the Williamsburg Co-op (if there is such a thing). BONUS NOTE! About Aleister Crowley - by Sabrina Kim Banes Aleister Crowley was an English occultist, ceremonial magician, writer, and mountaineer who lived from 1875 to 1947. He led the international magical society Ordo Templi Orientis, and his grasp of occult knowledge was second to none. He created his own religion, Thelema, whose teachings are contained in The Book Of the Law — and yes, the Gnostic Mass really does involve consuming trace amounts of bodily fluids.  Crowley's Tarot deck, the Thoth deck, which he co-created with Lady Frieda Harris, is known to this day as one of the most powerful and beautiful in existence. Nowadays, people remember Crowley as a sort of early 20th-century edgelord who wrote inflammatory poetry and encouraged people to do drugs and have lots of sex. Some say he drove all his partners mad. But his greatest esoteric teaching, "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law," continues to endure within occult circles. If you want to read more about him you should check out Perdurabo: The Life of Aleister Crowley by Richard Kaczynski. Not a reader? You can learn a little about some of the wild hijinks of the OTO's Agape Lodge (and the life of Jack Parsons) from the television series Strange Angel.  All errors included here are the sole responsibility of Sabrina Kim Banes!
